Playlist track order

Anyone know how to make a custom order of tracks in a playlist? I accidentally alphabetised my favourite playlist and want my old track order back but it won't let me drag them around to change it. Thanks :)

I am SO HAPPY :smileyvery-happy: to report I have (sort of) found the solution to the playlist re-ordering issue!! It's very odd how this works, but it's the only way I've found to do it, so here goes.
PROBLEM:  If you have sorted a playlist by any of the column headings, you then find you cannot reorder by drag & dropping.
'WORK-AROUND' SOLUTION:  <Assumes you have first done a sort by any column heading in *any* Playlist>
1.  Click on and 'Star' any song in playlist.
2,  Click on and re-sort by whatever column heading you just did a sort by.
3,  Click on and re-sort AGAIN by same column as in step 2.
4.  Select/Click on any song in Playlist, Re-order by Drag & Drop to whatever place you desire in Playlist.
Additional Notes/Observations:
I did notice that it *seems* to be true that once you have completed the above process, all of the other Playlists are also able to be re-ordered without repeating this process in each one, as long as you do not sort by a column heading again.  From what I observed, it appears that once you do so, you must than repeat the entire process as outlined above in order to be able to again re-order your Playlist(s).
I hope everyone finds this 'goofy' solution helpful and if it does not work for aome reason, please post your experience here so that we may troubleshoot it and make sure we've got it right.  It would be nice if this were added to some sort of  Spotify 'Toolkit' App as an integrated 'intuitve' process!  We can only hope, right? :robotfrustrated:

  • Music playlist track order... iTunes vs ATV 2nd Gen

Streaming music from my iTunes Library to new 2nd Gen AppleTV: When I attempt to listen to a music playlist from my iTunes library through AppleTV, the track order within the ATV playlist does not match that of the playlist in my iTunes library. The songs within the ATV playlists are always sorted alphabeticaly by song title and do not match the sorting of playlists in my iTunes library.
I contacted an Express Lane advisor about this, case number 186510612, and was politely advised that there's apparently no solution. The advisor recommended that I submit feedback (which I did).
Track order on a music playlist is very important for several reasons. Any suggestions?

I couldn't agree more. I, too, have been an Apple/Mac user from the beginning. This seemed like such an elementary issue that I was convinced I was missing something simple. Evidently not, based on your experience and the response I got from tech support. I encourage you to report this issue in "feedback" http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and maybe Apple will fix it in a software update.
For now, ATV is almost unusuable for streaming live album playlists with "intro" tracks. Moreover, studio album track order on ATV does not correspond with that intended by the album producer which, in itself, denegrates the artistic experience.

  • Playlist track order mixed up on iPhone

Some of my playlists are not keeping the proper order on my iPhone (and also on an old iPhone I am now using as an iPod - both running iOS5).  The tracks are in the correct order on my computer.  I've tried deleting the playlist from my iPhone and then reloading it.  Same result.  I've also completely deleted the playlist from by computer and then recreated it, reloaded it on the iPhone and the order is still wrong!  It is only happening on some playlists but I can find no reason for it!  Anybody else experiencing this?

Just found and succesfully used the following workaround provided by Zeno Popovici in another thread ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/16370330#16370330 ):
Add "Playlist is Music" to smart playlists. Make sure to select "Copy to play order" from Contextual Menu.
This workaround did the job for me, but it requires that the playlist has "Match ALL (not ANY) of the following rules" checked. I did not have to remove and reload music from my iPhone 4. Weird bug!

  • Rearranging track order in playlists

Before I totally lose my mind can someone please tell me how to put playlist tracks into the order that I want them to play in when I copy to mp3 player.

First, click on the left most column header, the one with the numbers. Then, make sure Shuffle is turned off. Then, you can drag and drop the tracks into any order you wish.

    My Wishlist!
Please give me the ability to change the order of songs in the playlist and to save (overwrite) or save as...
Please. I know you can overwrite by re-typing the same name... which is a pain if you can't remember every name and frankly, a waste of time.
Which brings me to... Let's be able to rearrange the track order from within a playlist! It is 2005 already.
And if I'm going to pass up the opp to show off my kids pictures from a 40 GB music only machine, please let me crossfade the tracks with a few time based options?

It's certainly easier?to create and edit playlists via the PC, using any of the software that can do this e.g. MediaSource, and even easier with the?excellent shareware Notmad Explorer.

  • Track order changed when copying playlist to memory stick!

Help!! Everytime I try to copy a playlist to a memory stick by highlighting and dragging the track order gets completely jumbled and it's driving me nuts!!! How do I prevent this from happening??!! Thank you for any responses to this question!

    You cannot.
The playlist is sorted on any column in iTunes or by simply dragging the songs up/down as you want.
When you view the songs on the memory stick in Windows Exploder, it sorts by the column you are sorting on (filename is default).
You would need to add a track number of the playlist order to the filename to keep them in order.

If you are viewing the CD in iTunes, it is sorting on the column you have selected.
Sort on the very first column header with the numbers.

  • Moving playlist from itunes to desktop folder and keeping track order/seq!?

I have a playlist created in itunes that I want to copy to a folder on my desktop. When I do copy the list the tracks reorder based on the track number assigned within the origin album, as opposed to keeping their playlist order. Is there a way to fix this so the tracks remain organized by playlist sequence in the desktop folder?
I know how to change track numbers on each file; however, reassigning track numbers changes the tracks location in the orginal album as well, which of course I do not want.
Any help would be appreciated. I trust this is an easy question.
    Thank you.

  • How can I re-sort my albums both chronologically and in track order?

    Hi all,
All of a sudden, the correct album track order on my iPod Classic has gone haywire!
I have many, many playlists, containing albums by all my favourite bands, arranged in chronological order. This means that I can start playing the Beatles (for instance) with "Please Please Me", and work my way through to "Let It Be:Naked", playing each album in its turn, with the track listing of each album in their original order.
Of course, I have to tell iTunes to sort "Album by Artist/Year" to achieve this end, and up until just recently, things have been fine. Most of my 250+ artist-dedicated playlists are sorted this way.
Now, all of a sudden, I find that the track order within these albums in iTunes are appearing in a completely random order. The only way I can get the correct track sequence back again is to re-sort the list by "Album" which re-arranges the albums alphabetically, but that does not list them chronologically....
I have tried re-sorting the chronologically dated and named albums by clicking the column header, and when it comes up with sorted by "Album by Artist / Year" (which is where it ONCE was all automatically sorted into correct sequence of track numbers) now, it comes up with all the album tracks in random order, within each album.. It sorts the albums into the correct chronological order, but the tracks within these albums are all messed up.
As I said earlier, if I choose to sort each playlist simply "By Album", then all the tracks on each album are in the correct order, so I KNOW that the correct ID Tag info is still there..
Until now, I have been able to pride myself on (usually) being able to manage the sometimes quirky moods of iTunes, which I have been using for over a decade - but I have never had this problem before.
Please also note that all my 23,000+ tracks have album dates, track numbers, artists, groupings, genres, play counts, and most also have cover images.
This week, I have downloaded and re-installed iTunes 10.6.3.25, but still no change.
Does anyone have any thoughts as to what I can do to get things back the way they were again?
    Many thanks,
    Rusty Shay

    Hello there,
    Hi there Chris CA,
    Many thanks for your reply.
I just tried using the column browser as you suggested, but it remains the same.
I can either have the albums by any one artist sorted alphabetically - with the tracks in the correct sequence....
Or I can have the albums sorted by year of release - with the tracks in random order....
    But not both!
The most curious thing is that all playlists are not affected. Probably three or four out of the 250+ are listed the way I want them all to be.
    It's driving me bloody crazy!

  • How do I Force a playlist play order?

I want to make a playlist to play in a particular order, so I can burn a CD for playback with that same order.
I don't see a way to change the order in the BURN list, so is there way to change the playlist play order?
I don't want to force it by changing the track name, because it screws up the sort order (like alphabetic title for instance).

Have you tried dragging the tracks in the playlist into the order you want them in? Open the playlist and click on the number column (extreme left). Click on the song you want to move, hold down the mouse button and drag the song to where you want it to be. Make sure neither Shuffle or Repeat are switched on in the playlist, either of those can prevent you reordering tracks.

  • Track order of my album out of order

    Hello,
I am having issues with my song order on my itunes.
Usually when I put my songs of a certain album in my itunes and click the album tab at the top the songs are in order by track number in my album, but for one of my albums its in a completely messed up order and I can't figure out why.
What I have tried so far:
-I used the "get info" and made sure that the track number is there in order (1-20) for each song.
-For the track number I also tried listing it as 1 of 20, 2 of 20, 3 of 20...etc but it has no effect.
-I used "get info" and tried typing 1 of 1 for the disc number for each song in my album but it did nothing so I changed it back to what it was, (it doesn't say anything)
-I even renamed my songs starting with a 1-20 corresponding to its track number, nothing changed.
-I even did this to the song files on my computer with windows media player so the files themselves have the correct track number and numbering in song name, I used the "Advanced tag editor" on WMP.
    - I sync songs manually by dragging the songs into my "music" under my ipod, not my itunes library, this always worked except for this album, I tried syncing my songs about 5 or so times
-I use a windows XP 2005 edition and the new nano ipod
    Other info:
-The album name is the same for each song, so all the songs are in the same album.
-It is set to album, not album by year or artist or anything else.
-It is not on shuffle, the order is physically out of order so when i play it on "play once" or similar it's suppose to go on to the next song in that track order but since it's in a messed up order it plays in that messed up order where normally on a normal un-messed up order album it would play the next track number in order since it is in order on my itunes.
    Other info 2:
-I do not want to make a playlist, I want the album in order on my itunes so when I'm using my ipod I can just go that album and play the songs according to track number.
-The reason why I want it into order a lot is because this album is a "gapless megamix" which means when the songs transaction into the next song is unnoticeable since the song transact into the next song without pausing, so basically it is like one big, one hour song when actually composed of 20 songs, so the album must be in order.
So in a nut shell I just want my album's songs to be in track order.
    Thanks

Sorry for double posting but I wanted this to be in a different post
Ok, after hours and hours of hurting my head I found the solution to this.
The problem is that in the "sort" tab under the "get info" section is that there are 2 sections for artists, one is just "artist" and the other is "album artist."
When you erase the "album artist" the track number reorders itself correctly, so I just needed to leave "artist" and delete the "album artist."
Now my track order is not messed up.
Hopefully this may help other people who are having the same issue.

  • IOS5 Playlist Sort Order Issue (not smart list just normal playlist)

So i cant figure out why my music wont sort thwy way i wanted to in each of my playlist. Before IOS5 i can sort my songs in my playlist to what ever  i wanted and not it just stuck at oldest song added to newest song added.. i want it the other way around...
What happen apple? it was fine in the last OS... am i missing something here.
I would like the ability to sort my music any which way i want to!

Ugh..  This is driving me crazy!  Yes, the adding of the rule "playlist is music" fixes this issue when you're syching an ipad or iphone, etc.  BUT, that very rule causes iTunes Match to fail!  So for any of my devices I have iTunes match enabled for...which is all of them now, my playlists are all jumbled.  Here's an example of how weird this issue is:
On my iPad I can see my playlists.  When I click on the playlist the music order seems random.  I have to select a track to play.  Once I've done that, I can click on the picture of the album up at the top where it lists how far into the track you are, etc. and that changes the screen to a full sized picture of the album.  At the bottom of THIS screen is another playlist icon (bottom right of the screen).  If I tap THAT item, suddenly my playlist is listed CORRECTLY.  I can then select the first track of the playlist and tracks will play in the proper order after that.
This is absolutely insane and so opposite of Apple's "it's simple" and "it just works" mantra that it's not even funny.  To play my smart playlists in order on my iPad or iphone with iTunes Match enabled, I have to select a playlist, get a track playing, change the display to show the album cover, tap the playlist icon at the bottom of THAT new display, and THEN I can select the first track in my playlist and everything is good.  Something needs to be done about this.  It's been an issue since iTunes Match was activated.  BTW, iTunes Match won't synch smart playlists with the "playlist is music" rule selected because it says that 'playlists that reference other playlists' cannot by synched.  It was crazy to have to add that rule to begin with but I could live with it.  Now, there's simply no apparent way to fix the issue.

  • ITunes mixes up the track order of songs within an album??

My iTunes mixes up the track order, and there is no way to specifically order it by track.  i have even gone and individually marked each song as ie(2 of 12) but it still lists them in a random order.  How can I make the songs fit in their original order?  And none of that "click at the top to order it by artist, album, or time etc," because it doesn't click above track number.

If the songs are in a playlist open iTunes then click on the playlist. Click on the number column (extreme left). Click on the song you want to move and drag it to where you want it to be. Right click on the playlist name and select "Copy to play order". Connect your iPod, if you are updating automatically it will pick up the change. If you are updating manually then you connect first and when the iPod appears in the source list carry out the process above directly in the playlist on your iPod. Make sure neither Shuffle or Repeat are switched on in the playlist, either of those can prevent you reordering tracks.
If the tracks are out of order in the library try this, I found that it works for me. Right click at the top of any column in your iTunes library and choose **Track Number** from the list. Click at the top of this new column to sort it and after that click on the Album column. If you like you can then click on Artist, it will continue to hold the track order as well. Afterwards anything you import should follow this arrangement Artist>Album>Track Number within Album (you can hide the track number column when you've done if you don't want it cluttering up the view)

  • Track order issues

I'm having this trouble with itunes and track orders:
Lately all cds that I've added to my collection got the wrong track order, the last song showing right after the first. I'm pretty sure all tracks share the same metadata for artist, album artist, album, etc.
So for this CD with 8 tracks the order itunes shows is 1-8-2-3-4-5-6-7. Same for two cds with 10 tracks (1-10-2-3..). I tried changing the artist/album info for the misplaced track but it always goes back to the wrong order when I fix it.
And oddly this only happens when I sort by album by artist. The order is correct when I sort by album only.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

on the iPod: there's an album that appears 3 times on iPod with exactly the same songs while in itunes it's fine! what the **** is this? Can anyone help me?
Likely you just need to do a restore on the iPod, let it format and resync and it should be fine.

since i have a 8Gb iPod nano 3G and a 20Gb AND I would like to use the automatic Sync with the iPod i created a new library in iTunes where i'll have only 8Gb of stuff. Seems like a good idea to just plug the iPod and it syncs automatically with the stuff I've already chosen,
No that is a fairly inefficient way to do it. iTunes can tell your iPods apart, so all you have to do is sync them to the same library and for the Nano, set it up to sync a playlist of what you want.
Instead of creating a whole new library, just create a playlist in iTunes with that same set of music in it. Not only will you only have one library, but you can now easily add things or delete thing from that playlist out of your main library.
Then plug in the Nano and set it up to sync only that playlist. Simple!

Just another thing... can any of you advise me on a good auto-MP3 tagger application (for free!)?? I had a really good one for WinXP - Magic MP3 Tagger - but it's not available for Mac and i think it would resolve the track ordering issues!
iTunes is free and is a pretty good MP3 tagger.

  • Playing albums in track order-please

Why and how can it be so freaking hard to play an album on itunes starting with the first track and then go on from there in order!??
The only way is to go to the search area and look up the album, and then hit the track # tab. Or to always organize your music by artist. This is ridiculous. I personally like to view my music in the 'date added' order and I can find no way to fix this problem.
Artist and recording engineers and producers spend many hours sequencing a full collection of songs, choosing the track order, deciding how many seconds should go in between pieces, so some of us really want to respect this and listen to whole albums the way that they were intended to be played!
Please add an option that helps solve this!!!
    B.

iTunes plays things in the order in which they are displayed on the playlist which you are playing. If you're playing a playlist in which you are viewing items in order added and that doesn't happen to be the track order then by order added is what you'll get. If you start the list in track order and then change the display to order added then it will switch to that order. One way is to have two sets of playlists and view one in order added while playing the second in album mode. Of course the highlight won't be on the currently playing track, but at least you can continue to view your music in whatever order you wish while the other list continues to play the tracks in order. Alternatively, just make sure your tracks are added to your list by play order, then at least it will play in the correct order within an album.
