Playlists disappear when I hook up to iTunes

When I plug my iPhone 3GS into my computer it pulls up my phone in iTunes but then defaults to really old playlists. I have to recreate the playlists in my phone over and over again. These are playlists I had created on my phone. Not playlists within iTunes. It happens automatically. I have it set on manual sync. As soon as it sees my phone my playlists are gone. I have backed up and synced thinking that was the issue but apparently not.

Connect the device to the iTunes the iPod is normally synced with in recovery mode and restore it.  See this article for instructions on getting the iPod into recovery mode.

I tend to make my playlists right on my ipod. This did not happen for the last 2 years. Just started recently. Did get a new computer recently.

That is because you got a new computer. You can only sync all media from one syncing computer. You can sync from any computer to iPod using the manual method but that does not sync from iPod to computer.

  • In iTunes 7 playlist disappears when shuffle removed

In iTunes 6 there was an option to keep the playlist of the shuffle shown above the smart playlist area after the iPod was removed. After updating to iTunes 7 I cannot find how to turn this back on.
Now when the iPod is either ejected or removed (properly) the playlist disappears. Am I missing something or has Apple removed this handy feature?
It was nice to be able to make changes to the iPod's playlist while the iPod was disconntected.

I was actually relieved to read that I wasn't the only one that lost my iPod playlist as soon as I removed my iPod. Being a newbie I thought I was doing something wrong. Now I will try and unintall version 7 and see if I can't go back to my original version, which worked JUST FINE.

  • CD disappears when try to import into iTunes

    Hello,
I have a macbook pro that I bought in April 2008. It has the following problem:
Upon inserting a CD, iTunes comes up, identifies the tracks and then asks if I want to import it. When I click yes, the CD usually instantaneously disappears from itunes. To get it back, I have to eject it and re-insert it. Then when it asks, once again, if I want to import it, it always succeeds with no problems whatsoever.
This is pretty bizarre behavior. I wonder if anyone else has ever seen it or has any ideas. This has continued to happen through a number of OS X releases, including 10.6.2.

Hi gary, yes, I'm using 10.6.2 and iTunes 9.02 myself, and it works perfectly for me, but I've seen others with serious cases of this problem with various versions of OSX and iTunes, though I have never suffered it myself on any of our family's half a dozen currently operational Macs.
Your follow up post brought back a few more memories about the issue.
A friend of mine suffered it extremely severely under Tiger and Leopard too and iTunes 7 etc. 90% of the time the disc would disappear when accessing CDDB on first insertion. Again even "clean installs" didn't seem to fix it (though on occasion people would find it worked for the first CD read, but not for subsequent ones - suggesting a problem of corruption of the database when the data relating to the first CD was written for some reason) . Somehow, though, it doesn't affect most people, which makes it unlikely that it is a straight iTunes/OS problem.
Other theories over the years have involved problems in reading the disc identifier information on the CD for some reason related to the drive concerned, issues with proxy servers used by some ISPs, the use of third party "plug-ins" , conflicts with other software, you name it. None of it really seems to stack up to me. One suggestion that might be more probable involves the way that iTunes deals with the "Mount point" of the CD concerned, as Denis Lynch noted in another thread a year or so back:
I did find a geeky workaround: the problem is that when iTunes gets the track names from CDDB, it wants to change the volume mount point for the CD from "Audio CD" to the album name. Apparently the unmount goes fine, but the mount falls on the floor.
If you open Disk Utility in that situation, you'll see that it shows an unmounted Audio CD. Right click (Control-click if you only have one button), and select the option to mount the volume. It mounts with the iTunes-approved title, and iTunes immediately starts importing the CD.
So if you've got a stack of CDs to import, just leave Disk Utility open to deal with the ones that get "stuck."
One solution that I now remember people suggesting in earlier incarnations of this issue, and which appears to have worked for some, was to head to iTunes preferences and change the settings for "When you insert a CD" to "Import CD and Eject" from whatever it was currently set to. Seemed to work for some . Might be worth a try?
If you want to have a look at some of the "history" under earlier OS and iTunes versions of this issue take a look at the very long archived thread starting at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6045368

  • HT1386 Why do all my playlists disappear when I plug my iPod Touch Gen 5 into iTunes?

When I plug my iPod touch gen 5 into my MacBook into iTunes (the latest version) using my included USB cord, it deletes all of my playlists on the iPod. Why is this and how can I make it stop?

If you don't have the same playlists on your computer, your iPod will sync to your computer. On your computer, while iPod plugged in, go to the top and push the music button. At the top of the new page, push the button called don't sync music

  • Playlist disappears when the battery runs down ...

Anyone experienced this? The battery runs flat, then when you recharge, the playlist is empty, and it's impossible to use the iPod. But when you connect it to a computer ... any computer, using a USB ... bingo! Back comes the playlist! Lesson? Don't let the battery die down. But this is kind of hard to control.

    Thanks for the reply.
Doesn't Apple recommend that you do exercise the battery by using its full capacity? They even recommend running it down from full until the computer saves the contents of memory to the special file, then leaving it 5 hours before charging fully again.
I have never heard of the 20% threshold before.
The odd behaviour in my case is that the computer sometimes does what is should: saves the memory then shuts down and when started restores that data, but at others does not save the data first, and starts up normally when I plug in the power and switch on.

  • My 80G 6G Ejects Instantly When I Hook Up to iTunes

This has been going on a while now - my 6G iPod plugs in okay sometimes, but more often than not, it takes like 20 tries to connect to iTunes. I plug in the cable, it shows as connecting, and then it ejects - you hear the audio cue for the USB connection, and then the disconnect cue plays and the iPod ejects. What's going on? This cable works fine with my 5G 60G iPod, so I think it's an iPod or an iTunes issue - anyone else have this problem?

hi, i thought i'd offer an alternative solution as i found something that worked for me.
i got my first ipod yesterday (the classic 80gb) and i have had this problem. it kept ejecting itself intantly. well...i managed to update it to 1.1.2 and sync it once but then i had this problem since. i tried different usb ports and also different cables but nothing worked.
    this is what finally worked:
before, i always had itunes open and running then plugged in my ipod and i got this problem. i tried closing itunes, and just plugging in my ipod to the computer without itunes running and it didn't eject (nor did it open itunes for me as apparently it is supposed to) so anyway i connected and it held the connection without ejecting, then i opened itunes manually by clicking the icon and it held the connection. at this time i changed the settings to manually sync the ipod and to use it as a hard disc, and since then (only this morning) it has worked ok and not kept ejecting. hopefully it'll continue to work in this way. good luck guys hope it works for you too.
what a crappy company apple must be to have such a high profile product used my millions and it's just plagued with constant problems and bugs. my mobile has to do 3 times as many things as the ipod and it never has any trouble. sort it out apple!!!!!

  • Playlists disappear on iPhone when using iCloud

Help! My playlists disappear when connected to iCloud. This just started about 2 days ago.
    First the basics:
    On the Mac:
    iTunes 10.5.1 (42)
"Your software is up to date" according to Software Update
    iCloud is ON
Music and playlists are still on the Mac
    On the Phone:
    iPhone 4GS 64 GB
    iOS 5.0.1
"Your software is up to date" according to General > Software Update on the iPhone
Settings > Music > iTunes Match is ON
Settings > Music > Show All Music is ON
Settings > iCloud > Account is Logged IN
Playlists DO show up when connected VIA USB and in Music > More > Shared (only comes up when connected via USB) -- The playlists will sync to the phone when Shared > My Library is checked.
I haven't lost any music but this makes it impossible to use my iPhone for playing playlists in the car since once the device is disconnected from USB it is disconnected from Home Sharing and the playlists disappear.
I've tried deleting and readding the content to a playlist and that does not help. I have tried to create new playlists and they will not show up on the iPhone. I have synced the phone without the USB cable (over WiFi) and that copied some art files over but there was no change in the playlist.
Anyone have anything similar happen? Any other ideas? I tried a search and nothing relevant came up.
    Thanks for any help!

I was able to fix my issue, for now, by
    - Making sure the playlists were still in iTunes and set as I wanted
    - Backing up the iPhone VIA USB to iTunes
    - Doing a restore of the iPhone from the backup I just made in iTunes
However, now I have to go and grab "from the cloud" all the songs that were removed from the phone backup.
At least for now I am back up.

  • ITunes playlist songs disappear when selected to play

iTunes playlist songs disappear when selected to play - ie double-clicked, or clicked once and then play selected. The song doesn't play although there is a brief 'flash' of something at the top of the screen where you would normally see the song details mwhile playing.
The song is not deleted from the library but is still missing from the playlist when iTunes is restarted.

    Ron Kozinski wrote:
I just recently upgraded to iTunes 9 and have found that some songs (18 of 750) will no longer play. I get a couple different error messages, one saying iTunes cannot find the URL for the song and another saying iTunes cannot find the file for the song. I hate to pay for these songs again since I already purchased them from the iTunes store, but I don not know what other options are available. Has anyone had this problem and if so, is there a way to fix these songs?
Usually that occurs when the file, or one of its containing folders, is moved, renamed, or deleted. If you remember doing one of those things, see if you can put it back the way it was. Otherwise, search on your hard drive for the song file, and re-add it to your library.

  • HT1351 I recently had my hard drive wiped out by a virus and had to reinstall windows and itunes. When i hooked up my ipod it didnt automatically sync my songs on my ipod with the library. How do I do this manually?

I recently had my hard drive wiped out by a virus and had to reinstall windows and itunes. When I hooked up my ipod it did not transfer my songs from my ipod to my itunes library. How do I do this?

iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from the computer's iTunes library to the iPod.  You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer (except for songs purchsed from the iTunes Store).
However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.  (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
Once the song files are on your computer's drive, you can add them to your new iTunes library.  (Going forward, you should use a backup strategy, and include your iTunes data in what gets backed up.  Then, you would be able to recover your complete iTunes library, including things like playlists and ratings.)

Very many thanks to you, Putaro!  Your answer provided the solution. It was a buggy plug-in that turned out to be the culprit.
You're off the hook, Apple, and my apologies for stating that you let a dog run loose. You skated by this time, Apple. But I'm watching you.
But again, Putaro's reference to the plugins I had installed over the years turned out to illuminate the problem. I have several plugins in my iTunes plugins folder, pretty much all designed to add more visualizer functionality. I removed all of them, and ALL of the problems I noted in my post went away, with full iTunes functionality restored.
I began adding the plugins back to hopefully single out the culprit. Among the ones I had been using included fielder, G-Force, Timestrech, volcanokit, QuartzComposer, and Jax. I hadn't used any of them in a while - probably at least a verison or more back in iTunes updates, but iTunes continued to work with all of them installed. Currently, only QuartzComposer continues to work in iTunes 10.4. The rest no longer even show up as visualizer opitons, with one exception. Jax does show up, but does not work. AND THE PRESENCE OF JAX IS WHAT KILLED MY ITUNES.
I looked into it and went back to the developer, and it appears that they discontinued developing Jax some time ago - evidently, it was buggy and crash prone. I remember after buying it, having problems with it - having never worked to its touted potential, but I didn't pursue it, and never uninstalled it. Leaving it in there caused all iTunes functionality to cease with the iTunes 10.4 update.
If you've got Jax installed, consider removing it before updating to iTunes 10.4.
My iTunes is now working right as rain, thanks again to Putaro!
