Playlists Shuffle/Creation Question

OK...here's my question. In previous versions of iTunes I could (for example) create a playlist for Led Zeppelin. I could then go through each of their albums, selecting the tracks I wanted and drag them to this new playlist. After I finished making all my selections, I could hit the shuffle button and iTunes would randomize the order for me. I could keep hitting shuffle until I saw a random order I wanted to permanantly keep. I could then export this playlist, re-import it...and the order would remain intact in regular playback (shuffle off).
Now, how do I acomplish this on iTunes 11. I have been creating playlists for my car like this for years.
thanks much.

You don
iTunes seems to have removed the actual shuffle order in playlists. They will play shuffled (the playlist skips around) but the display order will not change as it used to.

  • Playlist shuffle problems

I'm having issues with playlist shuffling on my iPhone 4, and the only discussion I found with the same problem remained unanswered.  I have a playlist of various classical music that I want to shuffle randomly, and it won't.  If I play it in order, all 53 songs will play and can repeat in order.  If I select "Shuffle" from the list of songs, or if I hit the blue "shuffle" icon on the cover art, it changes from "1 of 53" to either "1 of 8" or "1 of 9" (depending on which song happens to be playing).  The smaller groups don't seem to be based by artist or by album, but I can't get it to shuffle all 53 songs. I tried making a smart playlist by genre, and I tried making the playlist manually.  Nothing seems to work.  I have another mixed playlist with various artists and multiple albums, and it functions normally: I can get it to shuffle randomly through all 51 songs across albums and artists no problem.  There must be some property of the music files or the playlists that I'm missing that's causing this bug, but I'm at my wit's end.  Any suggestions?

Do all the songs in your playlist have a check in the box to the left of each song's name?  Songs without a check will be ignored unless specifically selected to play. If you don't see the checkboxes, go to iTunes > Preferences > General and check "Show list checkboxes".
To check or uncheck all boxes on a Mac with one click, hold down the Command (cmd) key and click on one of the checkboxes with the mouse.  You can use this in a library, a playlist or in search results.
If the check marks are not the source of your problem, select one of the songs that won't play when shuffling. Open the song's information window (cmd + I or File > Get Info) and click the Options tab. Check that "Skip when shuiffling" is not checked.

  • Making A Playlist Shuffle?

Is it possible to make a playlist shuffle, so you can add all the music and it won't play the same band till all the songs you chose are through with that artist?

Ya, in the iPod settings, if you set it so it shuffles music, your playlists will be shuffled as well. At least it certainly is working that way on mine. Even when I pull up an artist and a specific album to listen to, it shuffles that album. So in my experience it is the iPod's setting that determines if shuffles is ON or not and if it is ON, then everything gets shuffled, library, play list, album, etc.

  • ITunes playlist shuffle feature

I have always found the iTunes playlist shuffle feature fails to play all my songs and only accesses a narrow selection and then repeats thes without ever playing a broad selection of my playlist. Is there a way to overcome this?

Yes. Go to SETTINGS > SHUFFLE, and set it to SONGS. Then, go back, highlight the name of your playlist and press PLAY. It will play just that playlist, and it will be shuffled.

  • Playlist Shuffle question - M Zen M: 3

Hi - have a question on playlists and shuffling them. I have several playlists ranging from around 75 to 500 songs. I tend to play them in shuffle mode, and have noticed that some songs get played a lot, and some almost never. I assume that there is some sort of glitch in the randomizer that determines shuffle order that makes it not truly random - I've seen that before. So I get that this is hard to fix, so I'd like to fix it myself by simply loading a playlist on my computer and shuffling the order of the playlist, then saving it. I figure that the randomizer will still have the same glitch, but the playlist order will be different, so I'll get different songs played often. So I can manage the list this way every time I get bored with the sequence. I've used this technique before with another player I had (Archos Jukebox) and it works fine. Problem is that when I load the playlist on my computer it will only allow me to change the position of track at a time (even if its multiple tracks, its a block at a time). I'd like even to sort them in alphabetical or size or artist or duration sequence, since I think that would solve my problem, but it doesnt seem like this is an option. Any ideas? Thanks?Colin

  • Playlist shuffle question

As a new Ipod Nano owner I'm having a problem with the shuffle feature. I currently have three playlist loaded and I can't get the Nano to only shuffle one playlist. If I'm listening to "Blues" I get songs from "Classic" or "Christmas". Is this normal or am I not setting something right? The songs do shuffle Ok but they also jump playlists. Thanks

    Hey there,
    Try this:
Head to your iPod's "Settings" menu and scross down to the Shuffle option and change the settings for it to "Albums" and then head to the playlist you wish to listen to and see if that helps.

  • Smart Playlist Creation Question - Rule Parameters Issue

I want to have newly imported songs go automatically into a playlist (Recently Added), from which I can move them into a playlist of their own. I then want to be able to CLEAR the Recently Added playlist so that I can then import a SECOND group of songs which will automatically go into the Recently Added playlist, where they will be the ONLY songs there because the first group of songs will have been CLEARED.
I inadvertantly deleted my Recently Added playlist, so that is not available to me - I have to, in effect, create my own Recently Added playlist.
The problem I am having has to do with the Smart Playlist Rule Parameters needed to accomplish what I am trying to do. I have been able to set up a smart playlist that receives newly imported songs automatically. However, I seem to be unable to CLEAR the songs from the smart playlist to make way for a SECOND group of newly imported songs.
I thought I could get the job done by simply deleting the entire Smart Playlist that contained the first group of songs, and then creating a new Smart Playlist to receive the second group. You can do that - but the problem is that the minimum time you are allowed to assign is one day. This means that when the second group of songs goes into the second smart playlist, it will also "grab up" and include the FIRST group of songs, assuming that the groups of songs are all being imported on the same day. I don't want to limit myself to importing only one group of songs per 24-hour period.
(When I import groups of songs, I import them in very, very large groups, which is why I want to be able to deal with them in individual groups, rather than having to sort through the larger, general Library of tunes in order to put them into their own playlists.)
It seems to me the answer lies in being able to set up a Rules Parameter that shortens the time involved from one day to something like 15 minutes or so. I don't know how to do that, even assuming that it can be done.
Or, perhaps, someone might have another suggestion that would help me accomplish my goal here.
Any and all thoughts will be much appreciated!

You can use playlist membership as a criterion in a Smart Playlist.
So if the list you are moving them to is "SecondPlaylist" (or whatever you wish to call it) then add a rule to your custom-tailored Recently Added that states "Playlist" "is not" "SecondPlaylist."
Not sure I am getting this. You understand that I am IMPORTING new files into iTunes - I am not moving already imported files into a playlist.
I can create a smart playlist with a Rule of: Playlist/is not/recently added (where "recently added" is the playlist I previously used to set aside the last group of songs imported into the music library). But when I click on OK to set it up, then I have to name it. And when I give it a name ("current load," for example) and confirm the name, suddenly, "current load" is filled with the last group of imported files. Don't ask me why - but that's what happened.
    Any other thoughts? Anyone?

  • Playlist "Shuffle" refresh methodology?

    Hi All,
Does anyone know when iTunes will refresh the playlist's shuffle content?
    For example, If I add:
    Song A - Artist A
    Song B - Artist B
    Song C - Artist B
Into the play list they will always stay like that... However on the bottom of the playlist in iTunes we have access to a shuffle icon, by doing such, it will reoganize the music to be something like:
    Song C - Artist B
    Song A - Artist A
    Song B - Artist B
And seems to stay that way...
    However If I now drag
    Song D - Artist C
Into the list, and maybe a few others, it once again seems to stay this way... However if I manually cycle the shuffle icon, the songs will once again re-arrange.
Is there any way to get it so that this list will indeed keep shuffling? Or is it already, but I'm not aware of it's refresh process... Such as it will reshuffle the songs once played through the list in iTunes?
As one of the reasons why I am asking is iTunes the Nike+ feature on my Nano... So I set the time, and choose my cardio play list... But one of the songs continually grows in its play count because its the first one when I chose it.... If I add shuffle then it seems to re-arrange the list, but again I only add songs normally to the playlist in iTunes and play most of the time through my iPod.
So what I'm trying to get here is a diverse startup process to the songs so that my playlist somewhat moderates and I additionally get a diversity to which song I'm going to hear first.
    Thoughts? or advice???

On the iPod's Now Playing screen, there is a Shuffle button.  The symbol looks like two arrows crossing.  Is that set to ON?
I ask this because shuffing a playlist should NOT always put the same 20-30 songs at the top of the list. Shuffle means a randomly ordered list is created and played.  If the original playlist is in a somewhat random playlist order to begin with, playing it in play-in-order mode may seem like it is shuffling, even though the iPod is playing the list in playlist order.  And the same songs would be at the top of the list every time, because the iPod not shuffling the list.
Sorry if that's too basic, but I need to ask the obvious question first, and that question is, IS is the iPod actually set to shuffle songs?

  • Playlist shuffle always plays the same few songs

I got a playlist that has roughly 250 songs. Everytime I connect my Ipod to charge it, then disconnect and start the playlist on shuffle mode, there's always a 20 to 30 songs playing first. If I close my Ipod and start the playlist again (still on it most of the time), it shows 1 of 250 and plays the same songs, but not in the same exact order (though sometimes it does for 2 or 3 songs). Just like if the shuffle was on "low" mode or something. It's still choose randomly some song here and there, but not that much since it the same few, ALL THE TIME for a while. The only way to get around this is to connect my Ipod to my computer again (it reset it somehow) or leave it open all the time so it knows wich song has been played (but that's terribly stupid). Is there any other way to go around that shuffling loop? I found myself skipping most of the time since I always hear the same few songs even though there's some songs in the playlist I've never ever played on the Ipod. Is there a way to set the "priority" (like play the most higher rated song first) or the "intensity" (from low to high) of the shuffle?
Got the last 7th gen. Ipod Nano.

  • Movie playlist shuffle

When I make a playlist of movies, I can't get shuffle or repeat to work. Any ideas why?

Thank you.  This solved my problem too.
But, one little thing to share:
"There's an option in settings for Playlists. It was set to Music only. Changed that to All then found the movie playlist under Movies by selecting Genre."
This is not to be done in iTunes in your computer; this is to be done at your apple TV under "setting". "audio video" "show playlist" "music only/all"
I am posting this here because I started chat mode with Apple support last night at midnight till 1:30, they didn't know what to do.
They called me back this morning at 10 am.
    It's not 11:40 they finally know what I am talking about and showed me where to to find the "music only / all" toggle.  My problem is now fixed;
all these time, they have in front of them a screen shot of your questions and answer but they don't know where to change it from music only to all.
So, I hope this will save the next victim a lot of time.
    Again, thank you.

  • Regarding playlist shuffle control

I've got a first-generation iPod touch, and within the last few software updates it seems like my device has become much more awkward to control. Take shuffle settings for podcast playlists, for example. Try this:
    1. Create two playlists on your device, one consisting of songs, the other consisting of podcasts.
    2. Go to the playlists of songs and tap Shuffle. You'll hear them played in random order.
    3. Tap the pause button.
    4. Navigate to the podcasts playlist and tap the first podcast. It will start to play. When finished, a random podcast will begin to play next.
Here's the challenge: What's the fewest number of steps in which you can turn shuffle off for your podcast playlist? Here's the shortest I've found: 1) pause the podcast; 2) navigate back to my playlists and select one containing only songs; 3) start playing a song in that that playlist; 4) tap the shuffle icon to turn off shuffle; 5) navigate back to the podcast playlist and begin playing it again in the desired order. That's a real pain, and if you're driving a car you're pretty much out of luck.
Here's my question/challenge: Is there a less awkward way to turn off shuffle when you're playing a podcast? I really, really hope I'm missing something obvious.

    Hi,
There is no specific OKCODE to capture double click in screen programming. This can be achieved quite easily in ALV using EVENTS.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • Playlist timing & Creation..

a Couple of questions from a novice:
    (1) I just spent 10 days ripping all my CD's into ITUNES, created playlists and do understand this correct that PLAYLIST will NOT copy over to the IPOD? Why not? Whew I feel like I just blew 10 days of my life. How do you get around this? Or better yet how do I salvage all the work I did?
    (2) Once I can get my PLAYLIST on the IPOD I would like to know how to have them AUTOMATICALLY triggered to play at certain times of the day. I know this might be impossible but I thought I would ask.

DM wrote: What software would you use to make a playlist on your computer and transfer it to your Zen player if you have a PlaysForSure firmware installed? Can you transfer playlists with the supplied Creative software?
MediaSource might support playlist import, but it's not very good about actual transfer of playlists. Best products I know for this are the shareware Notmad Explorer and Windows Media Player which will sync playlists.
As you can tell by my sig I dont own a Zen, I own a Dell, but after all since Creative makes the firmware for the Dell DJ's then they probably have similar problems as well. One is playlist creation with PFS firmware. Not possible with Windows Media Player 0, and Windows Explorer. It is possible with Real Player 0.5 however, thats the only program currently, otherwise its manually on the player itself.
    Ah yes, RealPlayer is another.

  • Ipod Shuffle Storage Question

    Hello,
    I own a 2GB 4th Generation IPod Shuffle.
My current playlist is I-Tunes says that I have 132 items with 10.4 hours of content at 1.13 GB.  But when I look at my storage space status on my I-Pod, it says that I am over capacity.
Why does it say I'm over capacity when I'm clearly not?
When syncing my I Pod, I manually manage my music instead of using the Autosync.  Could this be part of the problem/reason?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thank You
PS: I apologize in advance if this question has already been brought up.

    UPDATE.....
Something really screwy is going on here
I got rid of 4 of my songs on my playlist and freed up around 0.03 GB of capacity
I then put those 4 same songs from my library back on my playlist and when I synced it still had that 0.03 GB of free capacity
I also notice that when I download a podcast from the itunes store into my itunes library, the space that the podcast would use up shows up on my ipod capacity bar, eventhough I haven't downloaded it to my ipod yet!!!...wierd.
I wonder if should just delete my entire playlist and create a new one from scratch with the exact same songs.

  • Shuffle songs question???????

when i select ipod to shuffle songs it shows 1 of 2200 .....my question is. Is there a way to have the songs shuffle and never repeat the same track??
I unplug my ipod when i am not using it in my car...so sometimes when i reconnect it, it plays the same track it played a couple days ago.
Also....on the Itunes library, what is the check box for that is shown right in front of the track name?
    PEACE

    NINRH8R wrote:
thanks for the input!!!!.....so basicly the ipod is going RE-SHUFFLE each time i uplug it, either that or make another playlist of some kind.
    Yes
And as for as the check marks......you guys say itunes is going to SYNC the tracks with check marks...correct?.....but if the song is already on my ipod i don't need it to RE-SYNC the track again...right?
Well, if you have iTunes set to "Sync only checked items" and you uncheck everything, the next time you sync your iPod, it will remove from your iPod everything that isn't checked. If you manually manage your music, it really won't matter with the tracks are checked or not.
i don't use itunes to play my music, so i could uncheck each box with no problem?...right?
Why go to all the trouble to uncheck everything?
