Please Advise: iPod mini 1st gen. questions and issues

Hi all, thanks for your attention!
I have, what I believe, is a 1st generation iPod mini - I purchased it in early/mid 2004. I love it, and don't want to just trade it in for one of the newer ones, that do 5 million more things than I really need. I just need my music and contacts, that's all. The problem is that it now only plays about 2 hours before tragically and dramatically dying of "insufficient battery power"!
The battery life was never great - even when new - about 6 hours of play time. I heard, soon after I purchased it, that they had come out with a "second generation" one that had more than double the battery life. I think I read something about the disapointing battery life of the "first generation" being the reason for the re-release of the updated model.
Anyway, later I heard (maybe MacWorld?) that the only difference between the two was the battery that was put in it, and that you could take a "second generation" iPod mini battery and swap it into a "first genaration", and voila: you have converted your 1st gen. into a second gen. and more than doubled your battery life.
Is this true? If not, does anyone know what IS the difference bettween the two generations?
I am thinking that the best thing to do is to go to the Apple Store and have them replace the battery with a new one, but which one do I tell them to put in? 1st gen., that has poor battery life, or can I get away with 2nd gen., and enjoy the extra longevity?
Any info would be REALLY appreciated! Thanks in advance amigos!

Robert,
Besides the scrolling feature built into the click-wheel, there is a microswitch button for each function.  In other words, Menu, Forwards, Backwards, Play/Pause and Center Button each have their own switch that’s activated when you press that part of the wheel.
It’s possible that the switch for the Forward function has failed.  Does that button work in ANY menu area.  Do the other buttons work?  If you’re in the middle of an album, can you go backwards in the list of songs?
I was just working on the click-wheel on one of my Mini a couple of days ago.  I bought a used one and the prev other had some kind of decal over the scroll and the adhesive virtually glued the center button to the rest of the wheel.
Hopefully, it’s just the Mini’s click-wheels are they’re available on eBay for about $10 and can be user-replaced, if you’re VERY careful.
I also have an old 1st gen Mini that could be a parts donor and could do this for you.  I could also replace the harddrive with a 32gb Compact Flash card and new battery  while the Mini is opened, if your interested.  I’ve done a BUNCH of those and they work great.  I'm even selling one of them on eBay now.

I have an iPod mini 1st gen 4gb. When I click the wheel to advance to the next song nothing happens. The wheel works fine otherwise. I have reset and restored the iPod several times. What am I not doing?

  • Mini 1st Gen has Severe Issues After Update

Following the recent update, my Mini 1st Gen began showing various small issues. Last night, it randomly quit, and went to the lock screen, but the screen image was magnified hugely, 10x, and I was unable to maneuver into the password area. I attempted numerous hard resets, just getting the same unresponsive huge lock screen, and I was unable to completely shut the Mini off and restart. Eventually,  it reverted back to normal spontaneously. Again tonight, it randomly went to the huge lock screen, same story, it seems as if it won't magically revert at this point though, rendering it unusable, at a time that I really need to use it. I'm beyond frustrated between the issues it was exhibiting: very slow loading, spotty internet connectivity, switching pages or areas without prompt, poor touchscreen response, randomly making words in messages all caps, or spacing them oddly, highlighting rather than performing the action when pressing webpage keys like 'Enter'....that's the start. I was frustrated then, but to have a completely unresponsive device now is infuriating me, as I see this is a universal issue.
I'm not sure what to do now, short of a complete reset from a laptop, which, despite saving to the cloud faithfully, will make me even more upset. We have faithfully owned and used Apple products...I still have the 1st Touch, and 1st IPad, plus numerous phones and other ipads along the way. So, not only are our devices rendered all but obsolete at an almost yearly basis, making their lifespan as the best, fully functional unit, with all available utilities at service, 1-3 years at BEST, forcing either an upgrade or resignation to the fact that your 8 month old device is no longer the newest available...so we have to deal with that. Then, there's the forced limited memory issue, which makes saving things to anything other than 'clouds' or expanding space not an option. Ok. Now, we have to deal with these incessant space gobbling IOS updates and mini updates to fix the last update which was supposed to fix glitches from the last update, yet manage to make our devices perform even worse, if, now, they bother working at all. To fix this issue, completely unrelated to consumer use-one must completely scrub their device and re-install months or years of info (if you are good and backed-ed it up!). This boggles my mind. Once or twice after initial IOS tests? Ok, I get that. But at this point, installing updates is like inviting a Pandora's Box to be opened, with no clue of the effect it will have, good or bad..,although it's getting worse and worse. All this with nary a comment, even a sympathetic nod from Apple. Certainly no reimbursement for the countless losses of time, money, apps, information, work or school...life interruptions. Just a new version every year and an open hand for payment. It's truly disheartening for loyal customers & consumers as a whole.

Double-tap the screen with three fingers to turn off Zoom. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom and turn this Off.
Also make sure that none of the items in Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut are checked.

  • Ipod mini 1st Gen not seen by iMac or iTunes

    Hi,
I've looked through the other threats and reviewed and checked the advise given such as check the USB port; Done - iPhone & iPad work fine with th same port and cable. the iPod mini just flashes 'Do not disconnect' its fully charged and plays my music fine through a number of devices.
I cannot get the iPod mini to be seen by the iMac on 10.7.2 or on iTunes 10. I dont have access to a firewire cable and reluctanted to buy one on the chance that may not work either.
First question is the iPod mini on version 1.4.1 able to link with iMac and iTunes 10 and if so how? Thanks
    Stephen

I'm having the exact same problem, have tried everything listed on this page and the device manager steps. Nothing extra comes up when I click on "show hidden devices" the exact same listings are still there. And there is nothing indicating an ipod mini in the USB section in device manager or "unknown device" or anything.
The other user said "thank you yes have tried this and message is as follows: windows cannot start this device because its configuration information (in registry) is incomplete or damaged (code19)" - but nothing like that is coming up on mine. None of the R's make anything different. Am I doing something wrong? Can anyone give me a hand?

  • IPod Touch 1st gen question

If i buy the IPod Touch Software Update for the 1st gen only.
Also included is the app store?
I'm sorry my english isn't good.

If you purchase the upgrade to iOS 3.1.3, you will then be able to purchase and run third-party apps, yes. Not all apps will run on a 1st-generation iPod touch, though; more and more require either newer versions of iOS, newer hardware, or both.
    Regards.

  • Dead iPOD mini (1st gen.)

Okay, so I read the posts before me to see if anyone had the same problem I have but no one seems to. When I turn on my iPOD, the apple logo stays there for about 10 seconds and then switches to another screen. The screen has a picture of an iPOD with two x's for eyes on the iPOD screen (denoting that it's dead) with a frown. (That would be so funny if it wasn't for the situation). At the bottom it has www.apple.com/support/ipod. So I came here. What do I do? Please help someone!!!
P.S., I already tried the hold bottom thingy and pressing the menu and select button. Nothing is working.

    wait...i have another question
okay so now im reformatting it
iTunes prompts me to plug it into a external power, and i did that
but when i plug it back into the computer,
it repeats the whole cycle again...
can anyone tell me how i can fix this problem?

  • IPod Touch 1st Gen Wi-Fi Issues

About a week ago, my iPod Touch would not connect to previously known wi-fi networks. Even free, open networks with no security would not allow me to connect to them. I can see the wireless networks on the iPod, but every time i tap one to connect, I get the error message "Unable to connect to [insert network name here]." Does anyone have any idea what to do? I tried restoring it, and it worked for about 12 hours, then the same problem started happening. So i restored again, and the same thing happened. Then after a 3rd restore, it didn't work. So I waited 3 days, and restored again, and it worked for 12 hours and then quit. I restored it last night and it was working, but this morning it wasn't and still isn't after 2 restores. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way, my power/sleep button does not work so if the solution required that, it will not work.

Do you have this problem with all networks or only your network? If only your network that points to a problem with your network.
Have you powered off and then back on your router?

  • Ipod mini 2nd gen 1 gb: not detected by laptop (win 7 64 bit), if detected: error during autofill and cannot be restored, please help :D

My laptop does not detect my ipod mini (2nd gen 1 gb), when i connect it the orange light flashe 2 or 3 times then nothing happens. if ever that it will be detected by my laptop and when i sync music on it there will be an error and itunes will suggest to restore it to its factory setting and if i choose to restore it error 3194 happens. so my top priority of course is for it to be detected then fix the latter. please help any will be much appreciated

This is an Answer for a Possible Solution. It worked for me and is still working. The issue I was having with my 64 bit vista, was Apple Mobile Device Service was not being installed, I dont know why. But I disabled any active running program through MSCONFIG, to allow a clean uninterrupted install of ITUNES 8.02. This allowed AMDS and drives from ITUNES to install. Hope this works for most of you.
APPLE, please review your Support Methods. Re-installing doesnt help an issue that resulted from installing.

  • Can't open numbers on my iPhone 5S and iPad mini (1st Gen.) after updating to the new version 2.0.1. Please help!

Can't open numbers on my iPhone 5S and iPad mini (1st Gen.) after updating to the new version 2.0.1. Please help!

Okay , you should only delete EMPTY DUPLICATED folders, not preview folders or any others. I would put them all back. Then just delete any DUPLICATED EMPTY folders, do not disturb any other folders. On iOS switch off DOCUMENTS AND DATA under ICLOUD in SETTINGS. Do this on all iOS devices not just the one. Once deleted DUPLICATE FOLDERS on the mac in MOBILE FOLDERS then exit the LIBRARY. Open PAGES on your MAC and view folders on icloud. Check everything is all there as expected. If okay then DELETE and re-install PAGES app on iOS - THEN switch on DATA and DOCUMENTS in ICLOUD. Now open PAGES. If you have Time Machine on you can recover any 'lost' doc files and restore them from your mac from pages application. Try the process again and do not disturb any folders other than ones I mentioned as this is the system files LIBRARY. It is not a place to be over zealous in moving, altering and deleting folders and files. Take care please.
