I had a problem for a week with not being able to open/read PDF files. I tried a few remedies that were suggested on the Adobe forum, but none of them worked. Yesterday, there appeared to be a legitimate remedy, TDSKiller fix for a possible rootkit problem, stated by someone representing the "Adobe Team" based upon input they had received from numerous users also encountering this problem. This remedy launched the virus, took out my operating system. Fortunately, I have the operating system disks, and I had installed Sea Gate several months ago in order to continuously back up all of my files. After 8 1/2 hours plus, I was back in business. Some of you may not be so "fortunate". I am also posting this so that Adobe is aware of this problem. It's too bad that Adobe offers a "free" reader, but makes you pay in order to get assistance. I definitely "paid"!

This rootkit is not targeting Adobe Reader; it is just an accident that Adobe Reader encountered an error due to that infection. Computer viruses want to remain undetected, so they can do their dirty work in secret.

I searched this site and google for this error terminology and come up dry. I support a user who has been for years using Acrobat 5 (yes, I know...) to read files in a client DB program, as well as other PDF files on their PC. In the last week or so, they have started gatting this error "Acrobat is being used by another application and cannot open PDF files until the other application is closed." any time they attempt to open a PDF file attached to an email (via Outlook).
It is my understanding that they cannot upgrade to a newer version of Acrobat because of limitations of their client software, but had not previously had any issues viewing PDF notes from the DB, and PDF attachments in their email.
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing, as well as tried using Adobe Reader 7 & 9 in conjunction with Acrobat to try to get around this issue, but have not been successful.
Any ideas?

I don't have an answer to your technical problem. The product I assume is Acrobat that you are talking about (based on the post title), Adobe is the company name. This is a good place to ask questions on Acrobat if folks can figure out what you are talking about. They will ask for the product version number (like AA9.3.3), operating system, and other applications if appropriate. Also, just what you are doing that generates the message.
As for Adobe, you are not likely to get an answer from them here in the user forum. You will be lucky if you can get an answer if you can contact them and not be on hold for more than an hour (sorry, this is why a lot of folks end up in the forum).
So, to help others try to answer your question, what are the products and versions involved? What OS? What are you doing when the message comes up.

I have a Mac running OS 10.8.5 and I use Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Reader. Today for some reason, any time I try and access a pdf file from a web page, it won't open. I get a blank window. PDF files already on my computer open fine and I can create PDF files from Word docs, but I can't download or view any pdf file from any web page. Strangely, PDF files on web pages open just fine on my iPhone.
I checked that both my copy of Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Reader are up-to-date. They are.
I checked that my copy of Firefox is up-to-date. It is. And nothing changed with Firefox within the last 24 hours.
I am a humble computer end-user. I am baffled as to why this would suddenly not work. I have not changed any settings, etc. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I checked your instructions you sent and as far as I can tell all of my settings, etc for Firefox (plugin updates and preferences) are correct but I am having the same problem.
However, everything works in Safari. I don't have time to attempt to diagnose why Firefox no longer works. I will just switch to Safari.

I have an older computer and could not read a pdf file so I just added the Adobe software for $14.95 and downloaded it but still can not open the reader. If I can't open it, please refund my money.

I wish you folks would get your software working on OSX and Linux so we didn't have to continue using Microsoft malware. I hate having to start up my VM to use Windows. I've pretty much shed myself of all need for Microsoft except for Oracle ME. The main reason I have moved from C# to Python and now to Java was to eliminate any ties to MS…..only to find that ME requires Windows. Oh, the irony!

In order to read the pdf either you need Acrobat or Adobe Reader,
Acrobat is a paid software and used to read and edit the pdf files.
Reader is the free software used to just read the pdf files.

My guess is they don't care. Most likely they're illiterate and don't know what a colon is for. They probably think it's a little-used character. Remember: these are the people who don't know the difference between "deprecate" and "depreciate".
I have the same colon problem as you do. But it's not the biggest problem I have encountered in Lion. If it was only that I'd be Mr. Delighted with Lion. There's worse than having a colon - uh - that won't cooperate. A lot worse, in Lion.

If you want to use Firefox's built in PDF viewer (i.e. not a plugin) then you will need to ensure that any PDF plugins are uninstalled from Firefox and that 'Preview in Firefox' is selected as the Action for PDF files (see screenshot below).

What can I do to rectify the situation in which Firefox will not open pdf files in the browser, even though I have already used all the help suggestions to no avail?

I have tried everything Mozilla has suggested. Still when I click on a pdf, I get the message that the browser cannot open a pdf. I have gone through the help protocol, and it does not work.

A possible cause is the presence of a PDF plugin from an older Adobe Reader plugin in the plugins folder in the Firefox program folder.

Firefox 30.0 - Used to open PDF file in a new tab when clicked a link. Now new tab opens, does not show file, tab closes. How do I fix it?

I am using Firefox 30.0. I open a page that has links on it to see some PDF files. When I click on the link, Firefox use to open a new tab and display the PDF file. Now a new tab is opened, nothing gets displayed, and the new tab closes. What setting do I need to change in order to see the PDF file.

When I try to read a PDF file with adobe reader the file looks like it starts to load, I see in the tool bar the page count but the file never opens.

You can change the action for Portable Document Format (PDF) from Preview in Firefox to use another application like the Adobe Reader or set to Always Ask in "Firefox > Options/Preferences > Applications".
You can set the pdfjs.disabled pref to true on the about:config page to disable the build-in PDF viewer.
You can check the value of the plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types pref on the about:config page and remove the application/pdf part if present or reset the pref to the default via the right-click context menu.

Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize some prefs on each start of Firefox.

The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created it, so normally it wouldn't be there.
You may want to check its content with a plain text editor if you didn't create this file yourself.
The user.js file is read each time you start Firefox and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so involved preferences can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

I was attempting to open a document from a frequently used site, I had never been on, on my new mac however. I attempted to open the pdf file and was given the option of which program to use to open it, I mistakenly clicked use always and firefox as the program with which to open pdf files. I do not know how to undo this or what I should do in the future to access the pdf files.
