Please don't laugh -- which do I need:  Bridge Mode or Share IP Address?

I am a newbie to this. I would very much appreciate any pointers or help. Thanks.

Hi there,
I switched on the MacBook and hard reset the Time Capsule and even without using an ethernet cable between the two I got a happy signal from the TC to my Mac's AirPort.
I can happily get to the page on AirPort Utility Internet Setup where it asks:
"Enter the PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) account name, password and optional service name that you received from your Internet service provider.
Option 1: I connect to the Internet with a DSL or cable modem using PPoE
Option 2: I do not use PPoE."
This is where I am stuck. I do not know which to choose. The path to the end of the setup branches at this major fork in the road.
The only time I ever come across this type of information is when I set up the modem two and a half years ago. If anyone can help me learn I would be grateful to you.
Thanks.

  • Complete beginner so please don't laugh at me ...

    ... but
I bought my first iPod very recently with a view to having an audio player to use at home, out and about and at my desk in the office. The first two are fine, but i can't get my PC at work to read my iPod.
My first very basic question (like i said, please don't laugh!) is - Am i wrong to assume that i should be able to connect my iPod to ANY PC and listen to the tracks on my iPod?

Thanks for your suggestion - unfortunately, I still can't access the music files on my iPod on my work PC.
From the beginning; I have installed the supplied iPod software on my home PC and the iPod works perfectly; I have now installed the same software on my work PC but cannot access the files on my iPod. My work PC recognises that there is an iPod connected, but it identifies it with a different name (it's called "RAID") and states that there is only 1.23 GB of free space left which is not the case.
Is it possible that my work PC is accessing a different section of the iPod's hard disk rather than the main section? Or is there a setting I have to change to be able to access the music on my iPod on different PC's?

  • Don't know which codec i need exactly. Anyone?

I was using Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 with mac pro
exported a project 720p25 with "export>using Quicktime conversions",
and now i am getting a white screen with sound fine.
The info viewed in quicktime movie info:
    Format :
16-bit Integer (little endian), Stereo (LR), 48000kHz
    HDV 720p25, 1280 x 720(1248x702), Millions
so i was wondering which codec i need exactly. Anyone?
    Many Thanks

Actually i am using the fcp with mac pro at my school's apple training centre
and they told me if i export it WIth using quicktime conversions
i can watch it with quicktime, and just quicktime, nothing more
i believe that's what he meant.
and the mac pro did work fine playing the mov with quicktime only, not also opening the fcp.
I mean, it happens a lot, right?
some videos just don't work on your mac but his is fine,
that's the computers' problem not the video, at least i think..
and i've been looking for other topics in the forum,
and most of them said look for codecs or even third party codecs,
turned out most of them mark the question solved.
that's why i thought the quicktime message was right,
some codecs are missing. it's just that i ended up failing finding the codec i need

  • I have Canon Pixma mg5420 with usb to Yosemite 10.10.2, no CD drive on iMac, don't know which driver/software needed.  Thank you.

I have Canon Pixma MG5420 with USB to Yosemite 10.10.2

The Mac printer drivers are not included on the included CD. Just Windows.
The Mac printer driver for this model is available from Apple. So all you need to do is connect the MG to your network or directly to your Mac and then open Printers & Scanners and click the plus button to add the printer. When you select the MG5420 you will get a prompt stating that the driver is available from Apple and would you like to download and install. Agree to this and the driver will be installed automatically for you.
Also, this model supports printing via iOS devices so you also have the option of adding this printer using Apple's AirPrint driver, which is a basic driver for printing.

  • Please don't laugh! (lost drive space)

So, my mac mini arrived today. No way to connect it to my 15" cinema display and only black and white picture on my old sony trinitron TV. Borrowed an old 12" crt monitor to set it up. OS 10.5 in the box but sadly not installed so booted with "c" key held down. Put in basic details from .mac account and it logged in to my wireless network seamlessly. Ran software update. Screen froze during installation. Rebooted and it looked OK, information suggests 10.5.1 installed. Ran disk permissions. I can log in and screen share from all my other macs.
But, it looks like my hard drive has only 1.4G left unused!
What do I do in what order to find if this is a hardware fault or a software anomaly?
p.s. sorry to start a new thread. A recent one on this has been locked and did not answer my question anyway)

OK now you can laugh. With WhatSize I found 130G soaked up with a recurring file and after deleting it I have plenty of space.

  • Flash update appears to have bricked my laptop; please don't laugh

    I'm at a loss here.
So last night I was watching Netflix and YouTube, and the next thing I knew, Norton NIS started popping up multiple "Rootkit blocked" warnings, and then YouTube stopped working. It seemed like the Flash player malfunctioned. It would show an empty black box where the video is, and when I would right-click on it, it would just say "movie not loaded" in the context menu.
After a few minutes of YouTube not working at all, I got a dialogue box to install a Flash update, which usually happens at boot. Made sense, so I clicked on it, but it didn't fix anything. Norton popped up a few more identical "Rootkit blocked" messages, and then popped up a message that "Restart is required to continue fixing your computer."
I did backup my most important info, so I'm not completely stupid, but just as I suspected, once I hit the reboot, the computer bricked itself. It refuses to boot into Windows. I get an error message, then a black dialogue screen at BIOS or POST or whatever you call it that asks "Start Windows normally" or "repair mode." Starting normally just loops back to the same error dialogue, and repair mode just asks for boot disks, which I cannot find at the moment.
Now, if that were the only problem, that's one thing, but here's the real problem:
That whole process with Flash broken on YouTube and then Flash trying to update and Norton NIS mistaking the Flash update for a rootkit...it's happening on my second computer now. I'm not going to run a Flash update, and I'm not anxious to even reboot the computer anymore, until I can figure out what just happened here.
So can anyone help me? What might be going on?
    It's an X220.
    Solved!

Well, thank you for all the responses; it's all turned out well enough. It seems that it was indeed a virus masquerading as a Flash update, and I'm inclined to think it happened because I skipped months and months of Windows Updates.
I'd been using a cloned SSD, so I dropped my old hard drive back in and went from there, installing all the Windows Updates and antivirus updates. I used a separate computer to scan the infected SSD over a USB adapter, and it turned up a single "trogan.gen" virus. Once it was cleaned up, I pulled off all my new files onto a separate hard drive and wiped the SSD, and then used it to clone the hard drive again. Back in business.
I suppose I could have tried to rescue the SSD without having to pull everything, but it was so much easier just to clone the hard drive again, since I didn't have any new paid software.

  • Please don't laugh at me

I had, until it fell over recently (boom!), the world's
oldest computer, which was happily running Freehand7 Graphics
    Studio.
Now have a computer running Windows2000. Not a fan - and
would you believe it runs slower than the old one!
Problem - still have all my old CD's, etc. but I can't use
them because I get a 16 bit windows subsystem message ...
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications...."
Any ideas on how I can convince these things to talk to each
    other?
You can imagine what the response from the big "A" was. Nil.
    Thanks.

Have not seen nothing yet - just upgrade to XP or Vista. ;-)
Note that Windows must be installed in a clean computer, not
over any previous version. No matter what Microsoft says.

With google search "autoexec.nt" you'll find dozens of pages
describing the error. One of them is
    http://www.duxcw.com/faq/win/xp/autoexecnt.htm

    Nil.
With big MS and medium MM it woukd have been the same.
Smaller the software company better the service.

Thanks for your help. Sorry for not explaining properly but the cable kit original kit is damaged as it was chewed by my rabbit and it'sthecable from the hub to the bt vision box I'm looking for. I don't want to go into a shop and get ripped off with an expensive cable so just looking for a cable I can from online (but need to know what I'm looking for, which I don't! I am so clueless!).
Thanks again. Hope you know what I mean now.
Ah, my bad. I took it you were either coming back to BT or was explaining to us that you were already a BT customer and was thinking of taking out BTVision and was wondering what cables were needed. The reason I mentioned scart and hdmi was purely to let you know that the only additional cost would of been an HDMI cable.

You will need something such as this:
    http://www.amazon.com/A-Sonic-HDMI-HD15-Male-Cable/dp/B001OLCHJ6
    Ciao.
Note that this will only transmit video.  If you need sound, the audio output port will have to be tapped.
