Maybe I tried too hard to inject humor into my post, but the issue I posed was real, and I sure would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix it. Here it is again, bad jokes and all:
Whenever I try to feed a CD or DVD into my computer, there are some slight whirring sounds like the computer is trying to read it, but CD/DVD icon never appears on desktop and then machine spits out the disk. My theory is that, with Apple promoting the iMac with the theme that "You can never be too thin," my computer has become bulimic. Apparently, images of unrealistically thin computer models are just as harmful as human ones. To increase my computer's self-esteem, I tried reading it favorable reviews from when it was introduced back in 2005, but this has not proven to be effective therapy at all. Please help before my Powerbook ends up lifeless in the corner of a closet like Karen Carpenter. Thank you.

Humor aside... let's try a little exercise.
There are a number of simple questions you leave open, but it seems you have had this computer for a while. Did this just start recently? Has it never worked? Is the disc put in shiny side down? Etc?
So, for this time let's try something...
Do you have a CD-R disc? Do you have pictures in iPhoto?
Open iPhoto and select about 6-8 pictures... go down to the Burn icon and click it... let it ask for a disc... insert it... if it burns it, let it finish and eject it.
Next, close/quit iPhoto. Now, insert the disc... iPhoto should open and load the pictures, and/or tell you they are duplicates and do you want to keep the original or replace it with the one on the disc. At this point, you can refuse and eject the disc.
If this works I'd say there is either nothing on the disc's you are trying to load, or they are burnt in a full windows format, not the apple or the hybred. iPhoto burns in Apple format. Some other programs give you a choice. And I have found that some burnt on other machines do not always line up, track-wise, with my machine (I've had some music CD's do that to me).
So try that and see if it is you or where you are getting the other CD's from. We will tackle the DVD issue next if the CD works.

My MacBook Pro was stolen last night. I need the serial number. It is not showing up on my devices list. My iPads and iPhones are. I have used it to to sync my phones and pads as well having it registered with apple. Any thoughts? Thanks

SIgn in with your Apple ID, the same one you used to access this support forum.
Hopefully, you will see a list of all the devices you registered with your Apple ID, including their serial numbers. Let me know how this works out.
Edit to add: If you enabled "find my imac" on your Pro, you ought to be able to remotely lock it, or even wipe its memory. Click http://www.icloud.com/ sign in with your Apple ID and click the big green "find my iPhone" icon (nevermind the name, it will find all your devices provided they're running Lion or iOS 5).
Then file a police report and nail the b*****d. -
Firefox will not open. If I click the icon I get a less than oe second flash of Firefox on the bar and then its quickly changes to Finder.

I updated the phone, and now I can't get texts. All our info is merged-- and other phones are getting my messages. I'm not sure where I need to go to turn off or on the right info on cloud and also with messaging.
Thanks.Check settings>iCloud, settings>messages and settings>FaceTime. Don't use the same apple id in all devices.

Problem being experienced: My iphone will no longer charge. At the beginning of the problem which started last night, I was getting the error message " Charging is not supported with this accessory." My question, asked last night on Yahoo! Answers with follow up additional information and questions, is pasted below in italics:
I've been getting the error message " Charging is not supported wiyh this accessory". I tried changing to a new cable, and to another connector for the cable. At first it said "charging" even thoufh the actual battery percentage continued to go down. Then it gave that error message again, now it continues to say "unplugged" for its status even though its plugged in. The power outlet itself works fine. What should I do? Its a version 4.2.6 (8E200) and a model MC676LL.

device to access the internet (like a small Ipad that works as such with Wifi at my home and an Apple ID to access the Itunes store), and it has applications that I cant find
in my droid google play store. Its a kind of workhorse for me because of its simplicity
and its ability to access the internet faster than the droid when I'm home. Is it possible that if I let it
discharge to a certain level that it will regain its ability to detect the presence of the
charger? I've been using the square white charger provided by Apple.

I was running into the same issue for the past few days and decided... Heck, just try the old fashioned way and unplug the thing. Boom. Fixed it. Try unplugging it and doing the old reset and see how that goes.

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

I was using my wifi last night when I got an error message stating my ip address had been taken over. Then safari stopped working and i can no longer access the internet. I looked at my ip address and it states 000.000.000....can someone please help?
Sounds like a bogus pop up. In any case power down your Mac, your modem, your router. Then power back up in 1 minute sequence; modem, router, Mac.

Last night my laptop died and the time and date was reset. I cannot acess date and time preferences to change it and my laptop is acting really weird. My CD drive is broken so there are no options to put in a cd. Please someone help i need my laptop for school and cannot afford another.
Many system actions will misbehave, given an inaccurate date. Resetting the NVRAM and / or SMC will not fix it, and if the system has a preposterous date you may not be able to open System Preferences to correct it. This dilemma may or may not be addressed in a future OS X update.
If you cannot open System Preferences you can reset your system date and time using Terminal.
Please read everything that follows before proceeding. Write them down if necessary because the effects of setting a preposterous system date are unpredictable.
Quit System Preferences, force quit if necessary: OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
Open Terminal - it is in your Utilities folder and looks like this
You can find Terminal by using the Finder's Go menu and choosing Utilities, then double-click the Terminal icon.
At the prompt, you will be typing a command resembling the following:
sudo date mmddhhnnyyyy
... but you must substitute the actual date and time in the command that corresponds to the date format used for your location. In other words if your custom is to use a date like 8 February 2014 then reverse the mm and dd values.
Substitute numerals in the above command according to the following:
mm = month
dd = date
hh = hour (24 hour format)
nn = minutes past the hour
yyyy = year
Each of those values must be two digits except for the year which can be two or four digits. As an example if the current date and time is February 8, 2014 at 9 PM your command will be the following:
sudo date 020821002014
or
sudo date 0208210014
Either one will work. If you enter nonsensical values the system will attempt to parse the entry correctly.
To recover from your inability to use System Preferences to set the date and time, the value entered does not have to be precise, it just has to be approximate.
Enter that command using the actual time and date for your location and in the appropriate format, then press the Return key. Terminal will ask for your Admin Password - the same one you use when you log in to your Mac. Type it and then press the Return key. What you type will not appear, not even with •••• characters.
To determine if your change was effective just type the date command and press the Return key. Terminal will reply with the date and time. If it appears correct and in the correct format, you should be able to open System Preferences > Date & Time once again. Selecting the "Set time and date automatically" and choosing an appropriate time server will adjust your Mac's system clock to the precise time. -
