Please Enable Book Loaning in Digital Editions

Hi Adobe,
If libraries can loan ebooks why cant I? How could this work?
Loaning would occur inside Digital Editions, would require the Adobe id of the borrower and, if needed, a connection to the internet (to update the DRM).
eBooks would not be able to be loaned pass their expiry date (usually unlimited).
When an ebook is loaned the loaners ebook is disabled for the loaning period (most likely in units of days).
A loan copy is created that is linked to the borrower, set to expire at the end of the loan period, and stored in the On Loan bookshelf (new shelf) in Digital Editions.
The loaner could then send the loaned ebook to the borrower via email or copying to a memory card or the like.
When the borrower loads the borrowed ebook into Digital Editions it appears as a normal ebook (if chain loaning is a feature) or a borrowed book(if chain loaning is not a feature), both with an expiry date.
At expiry the borrowers borrowed ebook is disabled and the loaners loaned ebook is enabled.
If chain loaning is to be a feature of loaning in Digital Editions the borrower can loan the ebook with still only one enabled copy in the chain of loans (just like a physical book). Better still, since loaning is restricted to expiry date the owner of the ebook neednt worry who the initial borrower has passed it on to since all the borrowed ebooks in the chain will expire at or before the loaning period and the owners ebook will be re-enabled at that time (better than physically loaning a book).
If chain loaning is not to be a feature then borrowed books will not be able to be loaned.
For chain loaning, with the requirement of a connection to the DRM server for loaning, tricks like loaning a book for an extended period of time and then having the borrower immediately loan it back to the loaner for that time (effectively two enabled copies; cheating!!) can be avoided. The DRM server would know the loaning chain and prevent such action.
A benefit of not allowing chain loaning is that the borrower can return the ebook early. This would be more difficult in chain loaning as an early return would require all the borrowings further up the loan chain to be disabled.
It would be nice to be able to Give Away an ebook as well; where the giver transfers all rights to the receiver and can no longer read the ebook; unless, of course, it is borrowed from the new owner.
Thanks,
Edmund

Mine worked out fine. I dowloaded from the Sony e-book store and paid for them (of course). Transferred them to my library onb the Reader and then cut and paste thenm from the library to the Reader. Sounds easy? Took me a while.
In the meantime I have been trying out downloading from another site some free books but Adobe craps out!!I will have to leave that for another day - hope yours works out.

Using digital editions 2.0, I cannot transfer books downloaded to digital editions from the library to my nook.  I get an error message: failed to write destination file. At first, this happened once in a while but now every time. Help!!!

Modern kobo books should just use regular Adobe DRM and be readable on compatible ereaders that are authorized to the correct Adobe ID.
I understand older kobo book had different DRM: but I wouldn't expect those to
When Adobe DRM book information say 'no copying', that generally means no copying outside those Adobe DRM limitations.
You should be able to copy within the restrictions.  You can double-check that with the sellers (Kobo).
    Just double-checking
the pocket book is Adobe DRM compatible?
that you have authorized your pocket book with your current Adobe ID?
menu/Help/Authorize Device when plugged into ADE:  Library/Authorize Device if using the older more reliable ADE 1.7.2
If the pocket book is already authorized but to a different ID, you will need to deauthorize it first, ctrl-shift-E to ADE with device plugged in (or cmd-shift-E on Mac).
Be aware that will lose the ability to read DRM books authorized with the previous ID.

  • Can no longer see my purchased books in Adobe Digital Edition software

Because my purchased books are no longer listed on my Adobe Digital Edition software, they can no longer be downloaded into my E-Reader (due to Rights protection).  I do not understand why they disappeared from the Purchased list.  I would like Adobe to Re-install into my purchased list all my purchased books.  Would like some help with that.

Very nice device the PRS-350, my wife and I both have them.
Not exactly sure how much you have updated, so some of these comments may not be to the point ....
Copying to the Sony should have worked as long as it is still registered with the ID used when you bought the books.
Maybe the Sony lost its registration when you did Sony updates, and you need to reregister it?
Nothing will work with a different ID; you can change the email address assocated with the old ID,
but can't read books with a device registered with a different ID or transer them to a new ID.
Probably when you updated your software ADE lost its repository.
Adobe does not remember your books in any 'cloud' associated with your ID,
the ID is just used to unlock the files you still have that are associated with the ID.
Try opening the books on the USB on ADE (ctrl-O, menu/File/Add to Library).
They should then appear again in the ADE library and you should be able to copy to the Sony (assuming registrations all correct).
Or, if you want the books always available on the computer even without the USB,
copy from USB to computer, then use ADE to open the copies on the computer.
If ADE won't read the books either it is probably not correctly registered (with the original ID).
One possibility is that ADE got confused about registration when you reinstalled (it often does).
    See ***1 note at end.
Also, there is a bug in ADE2.0/2.0.1 that means they Sony devices won't work with library books on that ADE release.
If you want to use library books, use the older more reliable version of ADE.
    See ***2.
    Good luck.

Sometimes ADE gets its registration/activation confused and in a semi-authorized state.
Uninstalling and reinstalling does not help.
Unfortunately, it often then gives misleading error messages about what is wrong.
A common incorrect message informs you that the ID is already in use on another computer and cannot be reused.
This can often be resolved by completely removing any authorization using ctrl-shift-D to the Library screen on ADE (cmd-shift-D if on Mac).
Restart ADE, and then reauthorize with your (old) Adobe ID.
In extreme cases on the mac, the following extra step has helped some people.  Navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions and drag the activation.dat file to the trash. There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0 (and 2.0.1).  Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
(You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

  • Please help thanks. Adobe Digital Edition using across multiple computers

    Hi
I have Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) installed on a laptop with Windows, and a Mac laptop.
I have authorized ADE on both machines. I use the laptops at different locations
Currently i have 2 separate libraries (small libraries of < 10 books) on both computers but I would like
to be able to keep both libraries in synch -  such that the books and especially the notes/bookmarks
are the same when I read the book on both laptops.
For example what I want to be able to do is read and takes notes using ADE on the PC
and then when I logon to my Mac laptop - to read the same book, and continue where
I bookmarked last, and also see the notes I had added previously on the other laptop.
    Is this possible? Thanks
your help is much appreciated. I read and take alot of side notes
and this will save heaps of time.
I am a new to ADE but it feels like each computer/laptop where ADE will hold
a different library, with different set of books and bookmarks. Is it possible
to synch the books/bookmarks/notes across different machines
    Regards
    Adam

    Hello Sjpt
In windows xp serivce pack-2, ADE 2.0 is working perfectly for few days only, but after few days ADE 2.0 is not opening. I dont know why it is not opening? Can anyone tell me reason behind this?
If RUN>>MSCONFIG>GENERAL>DIAGNOSTIC STARTUP - LOAD BASIC DEVICES AND SERVICE ONLY > APPLY > OK and restarting the system then the ADE 2.0 is opening.
If RUN>> MSCONFIG>GENERAL>NORMAL  STARTUP - LOAD ALL DEVICE DRIVERS AND SERVICES > APPLY > OK and restarting the system then the ADE 2.0 is NOT opening.  As you people are well aware that we cannot use the diagnostic startup since it will allow basic service and devices only.
I have tried the following methods to overcome this issue (from internet)
    1. Uninstall Adobe Digital Editions using one of these two methods:
Start > Programs > Adobe > Adobe Digital Editions > Uninstall
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs
    2. Initiate Uninstall
    3. In order to remove all remnants of Adobe Digital Editions /  Adobe Adept from the machine a "Registry Edit" will need to be  performed:
    Start > Run > Regedit
    4. Search for HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Adobe > Adept and Delete the full "Adept" folder
    5. Remove only the structures that are under the "SOFTWARE"  extensions. This will remove the Adobe ID / License and Activation Keys
    6. Clear any outstanding tasks that may be associated to Adobe  Digital Editions downloads
    C:\data\my digital editions
    C:\my documents\my digital editions
    7. Delete any documents within these folders:
    Restore > Tasks
    Restore > Failed
    8. Re-install Adobe Digital Editions
    9. I have updated Windows xp from SP2 to SP3
The above methods didn't helped me to solve this issue. Then, i have used DIAGNOSTIC STARTUP and safe mode, it was opened, but not in normal user mode.
    Thanks,
    Mano.A

  • I have a nook and have been using it regularly to borrow library books along with digital editions.  Normally as soon as I plug my nook in the icon pops up on the desk top.  Now it doesn't and it isn't showing up in the digital editions.

I have a nook and have been using it for almost 8 months to borrow books from the library.  Normally, as soon as I plug in my nook, the nook icon pops up on the desktop and digital editions recognizes the nook.  All of sudden the nook icon is missing and If I try to unplug from the computer, it says it was not disconnect properly.  Any ideas?  Is something hidden or what?

I'm just trying to print my online pay stub
Since my printer isn't working, I'd like to save document to my desktop ("save as" is the only option given to me) and send it as an attachment to a friend's computer and working printer.
    What browser are you using?
Are you trying to print or to save the doc? Whether you have a working printer or not is really immaterial. If you're trying to print, then File > Print > PDF > Save as PDF…. If the resulting PDF is small enough (<5MB, though my preference is <1MB), e-mail it to your pal. If it's too big, transfer it using a chat programme or a file service (MediaFire, RapidShare, etc).
Now, I am currently trying to send the document directly (via email, an option given under "file") the pay stub from my employer (who uses ADP online payroll services), to that computer and working printer ....and I'm receiving a window (with apple mail logo on it) that begins with  "To view this page, you must log in to this area on agateway.adp.com:443:"  and asks for "name" and "password".  I've put in both ADP's information, and what I believe (could be very wrong) to be apple mail's information, and either/neither/nothing seems to work!
I don't understand any of this. You need to explain better—or perhaps just post a screen shot (blank any private or confidential info on it prior to posting).

I have a book for my college course I purchased through academic pub.  The site required me to download Adobe Digital Editions, which i did.  However, when I click to download the book, I get a message that says "Adobe Reader could not open 'URLLink(10).acsm' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded".
