Please explain Location Services System Services

Can someone please explain what the following on/off toggles in Settings > Location Services > System Preferences do:
- Cell Network Serch
- Compass Calibration (self-explainatory, I think)
- Diagnostics & Usage
- Location-Based iAds
- Setting Time Zone (specifically, how is this different from Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically)
- Traffic

No, he is right. Cell Network Search collects signal and location data that is sent to apple and partners to improve network quality. If you do not believe us: try it! If you turn it off the A-GPS will still pick up cell towers and WiFi first to determine approx. location before using GPS satellite data. If it wouldn't it would take up to 12 minutes (!) to find you just using GPS satellite data. Or test it the other way around: Turn the status indicator on and watch it appear when your network changes...
May I also explain you the other options in that menu?
Compass Calibration uses location data to tell real north from magnetic north.
Diagnostics & Usage adds location to the other info that is collected.
Location-Based iAds - well shows adds relevant to your location in apps using iAds
Setting Time-Zone: iOS uses the info sent by GPS to set your time. But also most cell towers set time info, so if you are not living near a time line, in a bad service area or your current network provider does not send that info that info you can disable this and save battery by using your carriers info.
Traffic: Determines where and how fast you are traveling to send it to Apple and partners to show other users how fast traffic is moving at that location.

  • Please explain why my system updated windows when i didn't want it to

thanks for really messing my pc up, as a result of your pointless ungrade I now have no internet connection what so ever, hardwired or wifi.

    Hi,
If you can't connect to a network, there might be a problem with your network adapter, you can try the following way to solve this:

  • How do I get features to show up in general settings like iCloud and FaceTime? I also can't turn on location services for Siri. I have the new iPad and have updated to the new operating system. Please Help Me.

How do I get features to show up in General Settings like iCloud and FaceTime and Location services to show up for Siri?

SADLY  not as i downloaded an upgrad to my original PAGES/
i have in the meantim had to open www.icloud. then from there import the file that i am working on and then check on ipad if it uploaded/ yes it did.
but what a waste of time as it doesn not save any changes done automatically back in the cloud....
i am now downloading the new LION and hope that it will fix the problem
i cant find any other way. I was lead to believe that you wrote, it saved automatically, on to the cloud, you then opened anohter device in anotother country even, and the new file was there, waiting, in its latest version.......
and the same magic was supposed to happen in reverse.
    It doesn't/
if i have to open a browser, go to www.icloud....why on earth did they not just leave us an icon to drop it in in that case?
I hope the new lion will help resolve the isssue/
any other ideas> keep em coming...thank you so much.

How do I add my new iPhone4s to iCloud's "Find my iPhone"? I followed the iCloud instructions and turned on Macbook Pros' system prefs to "find my mac", turned on iPhone4s's "location services" and set up iCloud, etc. In the "Find my iphone" tab of my new iCloud account (on my Macbook Pro) my iPhone4s still won't show—but my macbook does show. I had my iPhone4s set up at the phone store (2 days ago) and It receives gmail, my contacts and calender entries, the weather, etc. I installed the "Find iPhone" app from iTunes on the iPhone4s, synched to iTunes, even reset the phone, but the only device that gets located is my Macbook Pro. I can send a "sound" message to my Mac (and the Mac recieves it) but unable to see the iPhone4s from my Mac, let alone send any message. Any suggestions to get the iPhone4s device to appear in iCloud?
Thank you in advance for your help.

OK, I figured it out...I deleted the iCloud account off my iPhone (Settings, iCloud, Delete Account), and then added iCloud back in (Settings, iCloud, SignIn)....and then my email (iCloud) and "Find my phone" features worked! Nice!!!!

  • How do I turn off the Genius app in App Store. I've gone to Settings/Privacy/Location Services/System Services then swiped Genius for apps 'off''. Also, I've gone to Settings/ITunes and App Stores/Click on AppleID/View Apple ID and then turn off Genius.

How do I turn off the Genius app in App Store. I've gone to Settings/Privacy/Location Services/System Services then swiped Genius for apps 'off''. Also, I've gone to Settings/ITunes and App Stores/Click on AppleID/View Apple ID and then turn off Genius. Still nothing has worked. I'm still stuck with Genius offering the same apps to me. Mind you, once I click on the App Store there is nothing I can do but swipe left and right. There's absolutely nothing at the bottom of the screen like a features tab, nothing. There is, however, a categories button at the top, but that's it. Irrelevant.

FWIW, I just got off the phone with Apple technical support about this.  I use Genuis for creating playlists, so I don't want to disable it, but Apple support confirmed that there is no way to avoid syncing Genius data without disabling Genius altogether.  I'd read somewhere else that subscribing to iTunes Match might allow you to avoid this, but that is NOT the case, as I've confirmed, and Apple support has confirmed.  For me, it routinely syncs thousands genius of items, so I have to allow a lot of time for my manual syncs.

  • In lion can I clear the list of applications that have requested Location Services under System Preferences...Security

In Lion, can I clear the list of applications that have requested Location Services under System Preferences...Security & Privacy…Privacy?
I have uninstalled an application but the name of the app is still showing up in this list of apps.  I have disabled it but was wondering if there is a way to remove it from this list.

I don't believe you can since it is populated automatically by the system. FWIW, I do not have location services enabled - I chose not to since I have no intention of tucking my 27" under my arm and taking it somewhere. And, I deny any request any app wanting to use it and have not experienced any error messages because of it.

  • My location services is already on as well as with my facebook apps, but still i am unable to check in. what's wrong? even with my maps, it always say location unavailable. help please.

    - The iPod uses the location of a nerby or connected router to determine it location based on a database of routers and their location. It appears that the routers near y are not in Appl'es database.  As of yet, nobody here seems to know how to get routers added to the database.
    - If you go to Strtbucks. McDonalds or another networks does the location show in the Maps app?

    Contact Whatsapp for support.
There is no logical expectation for Whatsapp to be listed under location services or for that to have any affect on what the app can access.

  • CAF service: import web services using Remote Location / File System

    Hallo Experts
    I use the NetWeaver DevStudio 7.1 SP5.
I have a CAF project and in this project I want to import one WebService as external service. I have chosen the option "Remote location/ File System" in the import web service wizard, then I enter the URL in the following step. But at the end of wizard I got the error "WSDL could not be downloaded because Server returned HTTP response code 403 for URL". The web service I've deployed and tested on the server. It runs well. Any Hints?
    Thanks in advance

  • Wi-Fi Networking in Location Services System Services

    Hello,
I'm trying to figure out what the "Wi-Fi Networking" toggle controls.  This is located withing Settings > Location Services > System Services > Wi-Fi Networking.
Thanks for the help if anyone can provide any.  I've been searching around the web and can't find an answer on this one.

I would like a clarification of this too. This aritlce is unhelpful on the point: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5594?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US The new user manual iBooks for iPad and iPhone are also not detailed enough to discuss this setting.
Pappasbike, where did you find that reference?
From what you've said, and a little more searching, I suspect the setting may be related to the new Hotspot 2.0 ("Passpoint") initiative:
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/06/ios-7-will-hop-from-one-wi-fi-hotspot-to-an other-no-password-needed/
    http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/06/11/ios-7-beta-hotspot-20-support-will-lea d-to-hassle-free-wi-fi-access
"Wi-Fi HotSpot 2.0: One of the more-technical terms on iOS 7’s additional features slide, Wi-Fi HotSpot 2.0 automatically seeks out Wi-Fi subscriber services (for instance, AT&T’s hotspot network for an AT&T iPhone subscriber) and joins them when you’re in the area. In theory, this feature should provide you with faster Internet access and fewer bandwidth constraints.": http://www.macworld.com/article/2041306/27-new-ios-7-features-apple-didnt-talk-a bout.html
So, if I'm right, the setting is related to Apple building a crowd-sourced database of HotSpot 2.0/Passpoint access points/locations. Since I'm not liking the battery drain of iOS 7 as it is, this is staying off for me for now.

  • What is wi-fi networking under location in system services? Is it necessary or can I turn it off?

What is wi-fi networking under location in system services? Is it necessary or can I turn it off? What is it's purpose?

Wi-Fi Networking - Finds nearby Wi-Fi networks and sends information about them to Apple to help the company build a database of open Wi-Fi networks. This helps provide a location when GPS is not available (as on a WiFi-only iPad).

  • An explanation of each of these system location services? ...

I'm trying to find a fairly detailed explanation of what each of these system location services does and is for? I haven't found much Googling around, anyone know of a good article or explanation?
    Thanks very much in advance,
    Chris

The function of the individual settings is largely self-explanatory from the label for each.

  • Location services used to go pretty fine but now it cannot determine my location, I have iPod touch 5g running ios7.1, please help me

I did have location services and everything going fine before using my same wifi connexion and now it is not.
It's not even determining my location, please someone help me and tell me what the reason might be,  could it be the utorrent?
Or some app that changed location of my router?!

For location the iPod uses the location of nearby routers that are in Apple's database of routers and their location. Thus it appears that Apple's database no longer has youyr router. You do not have to be connected to the router, just within range.
Apple periodically updates their database based on information they obtain from iPhones, The iPhone has to have turned on the option to send info to Apple. no one has found another way to get the location of a router added/corrected.
You can confirm that by going to well-know place with wifi like Starbucks or McDonalds
