Please go on and Nikon D800E Support

With my first message here I want to encourage the developers of Apple Aperture:
Please go on making Aperture even better.
Aperture was my reason to switch to Mac. This was exactly 5 years before in April 2007 and I never ever regretted this big step. Aperture was a great tool and it remains a great tool. Being a professional photographer I passed during these 5 years about 750.000 images through Aperture and keep about 100.000 in my main database. All works without any big problem for these 5 years now. I love its perfect control layout for quick and precise work with big amounts of files. For me it is a perfect solution.
All main upgrades brought huge improvements. So please: Dear Apple Aperture developers, give us an Aperture 4.0 - we all wait for it. No need to hurry from my perspective. But I would love to be amazed by new features. My most missed tool is an automated lens corrections. For me this is the only real advantage of lightroom or DXO. For me the biggest step would be an integration of the DXO lens correction itself or the ptlens engine.
Okay and now one urgent petition:
Please add RAW support for the Nikon D800E quickly. This camera is the ultimate tool. The best camera I ever owned. Far ahead each other camera except the D800. The E is somehow exotic because of the lack of the anti-aliasing filter, but believe me: Many many professionals will buy it and many many amateur landscape photographers.
Thank you
wolframs

I'd be quite surprised is Apple doesn't soon add the D800/e to the list of compatible cameras, but, of course, I don't know.  I do know that if you want to have a chance of having your request heard by Apple, you must use the channel Apple provides for feedback:  "Aperture→Provide Aperture Feedback".
Enjoy your camera  .  And the 450-page printed manual.  Yikes.

  • ACR and Nikon D800e Raw files

This discussion is actually a follow on to an earlier one where I thought the issue was resolved. I am using CS5 extended 64 bit with WIN 7 64bit and ACR version 6.7. I verified the ACR version checking for updates and was informed I am up to date. According to the ADOBE help site ACR v 6.7 is available to open Nikon D800e raw files. However when I try and open these raw files there is a message that the camera model is not supported. Any help on why the raw files cannot be opened with ACR 6.7 is appreciated.

Thanks Noel - after several hours of experimenting,  I found the issue. I use a stand a lone software, Nikon Transfer, to download images to the computer. The software allows me to preview/select,  rename, and make simultaneous copies for backup. This software has worked without issue, however when downloading images from the Nikon D800e, it does something to the raw files making them incompatible with ADOBE's ACR and even Nikon's ViewNX 2 software. Now here is the real curosity. When Nikon Transfer is initiated from within Nikon View2 software and not as a stand a lone, it works, and ADOBE ACR 6.7 can read the raw files. Again thanks for the help.

  • Nikon D800E Support: When?

I just got my shiny new D800E and much to my suprise, the D800E files won't load, despite it loading D800 files. When can we expect this to be rectified? Please Apple, I can't do without Aperture and go to Lightroom!

As I commented in another topic, I think they may be different, but cannot discern whether Adobe has separate converter for each or not.  But in searching I found the following surprise:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/nikon-raw-files-d800-d800e.html
With my D800 and Aperture 3, I did not encounter any difficulty with images shot in Live View, which I don't do much, but sometimes do when I have been shooting video just previously.  Just did some yesterday, and Aperture didn't complain.

  • PS CS4 and Nikon D800E

I am unable to downlode images from the D800e to PS CS4 or LR 2.7. It tells me the file is not recognized? I use a Duel Mac pro G4. My wife just got a Macbook pro Operating OS9 and has LR 5. The files downlode fine for lightroom but not PS. What is preventing PS from recognizing the files from the D800? Is there a fix? Is there a plug-in that could fix the problem? Do I have to buy a new computer?

The DNG converter is a standalone application, separate from and independent of Photoshop/ACR/LR.
It converts your D800 NEFs to the universal DNG format, which can be opened by an older ACR/LR version that doesn't have native support for the camera. DNG is still raw, and there's no data loss.
That said, your D800 is a fantastic camera that really deserves the new raw conversion engine from ACR 7/LR 4 and onwards (process version 2012). The improvement is dramatic, especially in highlights and overall dynamic range. Compare the results for yourself to what's possible with Lr 5 on your wife's MBP.  Yes, I know, it's a never-ending race to upgrade this, then that...it never stops

  • Camera Raw Version 5.7 and Nikon D800E

Hi everyone,  So with my new Nikon camera (D800E), I now realize that I can do nothing in CS4 with my RAW files. As my current version of Camera Raw is only 5.7 for it. Will I have to upgrade my version to at least CS5 with ACR 6.7 minimum? Maybe go with CS6?  Regards,  Jason Gaughan

The reason you can’t read the D800E raws in an old ACR plug-in is because that old ACR plug-in doesn’t know the camera parameters that are embedded in the raw converter.  What the DNG Converter does is takes the original raw data and adds the Adobe-camera parameters and packages everything in a DNG file per the DNG standard.  That DNG contains the raw data plus enough information for older ACR plug-ins to convert the data, as long as you set the compatibility options in the DNG Converter to create the DNG for that age of plug-in.
If you don’t delete your original files, then yes, the DNG Converter will create files that are also relatively similar in size to the NEFs, although they could be smaller or larger depending on what size of preview you embed an if the NEF compression is better than the DNG compression.
Lightroom is good.  Check out the LR 5.2 update and run in 30-day trial mode to make sure it is compatible with your computer.  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
You can always do Edit in Elements with LR Adjustments from within LR to get the file over into PSE for the final edits.

  • "Unsupported image format" with my new Nikon D800E - please help.

I get this message: "unsupported image format" when I try to load photos from my new Nikon D800E. Aperture 2.1.4. Worked fine with old Nikon D300. I can get a thumbnail image in Projects, but that's it. Suggestions, please?!

Maria, the raw support for the Nikon D800E requires Aperture 3, see the technical specifications for the raw support in Aperture:    D800E**,   ** Requires Aperture 3 or later.
Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
You will have to upgrade to Aperture 3, to use the raw images with Aperture or shoot jpeg or use the software that came with your camera to develope the raw.

  • Nikon D800e and Lightroom 4.1?

When can we expect the Nikon D800e to be able to capture via direct tether in lightroom 4.1?

About the only answer you will get for that question here is that if it is ever available it will be available when it is.  Adobe doesn't make announcements about those features ahead of time.  And, not all cameras have support for tethered shooting in Lightroom.  So now it becomes a matter of IF it is provided it will be provided when it is.

  • Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application Support is required to run iTunesHelper. Please uninstall iTunes and then install iTunes again. Error 2.   After this I

So when I plugged in my iPhone 4 (iOS 7.0.4), iTunes told me it needed to update to the newest version... so I did. After installing it it gave me an error (-45019) that said that a required component wasn't installed. I looked it up and people were saying to unistall iTunes and all apple related software and reinstall itunes which i did. I am on Windows 8.1.
Now it gives me this error. "Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please unistall iTunes and install iTunes again. Error 2 (Windows Error 2)." I did this and it gave me the same message... Please help! How do i get iTunes running again?

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Nikon D300 and D70 RAW support broken

I am an Aperture 1.5 user that recently upgraded to 2.x due to my purchase of a D300. I was shooting a D70 before.
I am just sort of getting my Aperture library back in shape (sold my G5 and moved completely to MBP until there is a Sub 2k machine that takes two external monitors and/or apple offers matte displays). I started importing some pictures from my D300 which were made with firmware 1.1. The first thing I noticed is that the autostack on import wasn't working. Moving the time domain slider over does nothing until I reach the far right hand side when it stacks the whole flash card full of files together.
The other odd thing I noticed right off is that it does not auto-rotate shots done in portrait. After noticing that, I changed the import view to the "spreadsheet" format and all of the metadata was blank. Another side effect was that I imported some photos and had aperture place them on a network drive using the year/month of the pictures as the directory structure. This resulted in all of the shots going into a folder structure of 2000/1/ which is completely incorrect as the shots were taken last month and have a correct date/time stamp in the exif header in the files as well as on the actual files themselves.
I though, perhaps I need to have the 1.10 firmware upgrade on my D300, so I applied that and shot some test pictures with the same result, autostack broken, autorotate broken, no metadata at import. I checked the picture post-import and the metadata seemed to all be there (F-stop, picture orientation, lens data, etc...). I though this might be a bug with the D300 format or using 12bit RAW+Jpeg Fine so I took a few shots with my trusty D70 in RAW and had the exact same issues.
I finally gave up and took a series of shots with the D300 in Jpeg Fine. All of the above features worked perfectly this time. I repeated the test with the D70 Jpeg files which also worked perfectly.
The issue only seems to present itself on import. RAW files that are already in my library seem to be fine.
There is some horrible bug in the handling of Nikon raw files from at least two camera bodies. I looked around and there are some other threads on the discussion groups here citing inability to import and some other camera makes and models and I wanted to get a thread started about the core of these issues as I was able to cross-check with two bodies. I have access to a D80 and a D90 body as well to test with but didn't bother as the D70 support should be well baked at this point.
    Here are the numbers:
Hardware: MBP 17" 2.4 "Santa Rosa" 4 gig ram
    OS: 10.5.5
    Aperture: 2.1.2
    RAW Support: 2.3 update
Flash Media: Sandisk Ultra II and Extreme III 30mb/sec
Flash Reader: Sandisk "14 in 1" OSX compatible (supposedly)
    D300 Firmware: 1.01 and 1.10 tested
D300 image format: 12 bit RAW (.NEf) + Jpeg large/fine
    D70 Firmware: 2.0
    D70 image format: RAW (.NEF)
So when can we expect a fix for this issue and will this require an export and re-import of all of the shots I have already imported?
This is pretty serious as RAW file handling is the #1 feature of Aperture and Nikon is one of the top two brands of camera. This bug has broken multiple features in the software which should have set off red flags. This also broke support for an extremely old body. This is telling me that Apple has a QA problem in their test rig for Aperture.
This is serious for me personally as this is a heavy use time of year for me and I'm not feeling good about this software. I'm a 1.0 user that upgraded so I have $400 into aperture at this point and I'm not certain it's worth it.
    Thanks

    mindedc wrote:
Was your aperture a clean install or an upgrade like mine?
Yes upgraded from 1.5.6 to 2.0 and now 2.1.2
If an upgrade, did you move an old aperture library or did you export all of your pictures as projects and re-import them to a clean aperture library as I did?
Library was upgraded when the Aperture opened it in V2.0 - no did not bother to do what you did.
Did you purchase your Aperture 2.0 some time ago (when it first came out?) or in the last month as I did?
When it first came out. If you purchased it last month, it should have most, if not all of the updates.
Are you on PPC or Intel as I am?
On Intel - in fact on MBP like you, just 15" instead of 17"
Are you on a platform with a GPU or integrated graphics like I am (Shouldn't make a difference for this but...)?
To be clear, MBP has a dedicated GPU and not integrated graphics like MB.
Do you have the D300/D200 write something into the exif headers using the copyright or image comment as I do?
No image comment but Copyright, new feature since firmware 1.1, on D300.
Do you keep your machine meticulously clean or do you have lots of software installed like I do (xcode, office 2008, vmware, macports)?
I try to keep it clean as much as possible. Meaning that I clean out temp and cache out and try to keep the system up to date. As for apps, yes, yes, Parallels instead, and no, respectively. Have lots of other sw installed.
Do you have other pro apps like I do (final cut)?
    No final cut.
Do you have iLife 08 installed like I do?
    Yes. Also iWork.
Would you be willing to swap a raw image from your D300 with a raw image I have and try to cross-import into each others libraries to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is related to unique aperture installations (mine being a "bad" one) or that it is a setting/configuration issue on a per camera basis?
Actually, this test does not do anything. I don't recall the exact thread but it is here in the Aperture Forum, that stated that if you use a card reader (which is what I do), then there are no issues importing D300 nef files. But if you hook up the camera direct, then the issues you have articulated exists.
That might explain why some people are troubled by this and others are not.
Btw, I have D70 as well and have no issue with the nef files from that camera as well.
It seems to me that there is an issue. But there is also work around if you import via card reader. I realize one should be able to do whichever and not encounter any problems but I do believe it is not a major issue or deal breaker so to speak.
    Cheers

You can try installing 7-Zip (free), then right-click on the iTunesSetup.exe or iTunesSetup64.exe file to unpack its contents, and install AppleApplicationSupport.msi as a standalone component. It may still not install successfully, but if it doesn't you may get a more useful error message regarding the reason why.
