Please Help--10.4.6 is killing my Mac Mini

Please help. I am new to Mac.
I have a Mac Mini G4. I installed through Software Update 10.4.6. Partway through through the installation process, the system said there was an error, that the package was moved to the trash and that I should try re-installing. So, I did. And the same thing happened again. I tried re-booting the computer. In "About This Mac" it says that I have 10.4.6. But now, everything is messed up. I can't mount any disk images on the desktop (I checked, and .dmg files are associated with the right application). I can't even install any software. Someone had posted an ftp that had 10.4.6 as a .sit file rather than a .dmg. However, when I downloaded it and tried to run the installation package, partway through, it stopped saying, "There were errors during installation. Please try installing again later." I tried to "Archive and Install" from the Tiger DVD (10.4.0), and, early on in the installation, it gave me the same "error" message. I tried to repair disk permission (I hadn't done than before downloading the update), but it just hangs there (how long is it supposed to take anyway). Moreover, Mail won't launch and while Safari launches, it crashes. Firefox works. Please, please help me. I don't understand what's going on.
Mac Mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thank God, everything is OK, again.
I posted my question on two forums, “Using Mac OS X Tiger” and “Installation & Setup” because I wasn’t sure which one to go to, and received useful information from everyone involved.
I want to profusely thank everyone who helped, not least Dr. Smoke and his extremely useful Web site: www.thexlab.com
Here’s what I did:
First, I tried to Repair Disk from the Tiger install DVD. The repair failed, gave me the following error:
“Invalid volume free block count
should be 15966423 instead of 15966422
Error: underlying task reported failure on exist
1HFS Volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Repair attempted on Volume 1
Could not be repaired”
In looking through Dr. Smoke’s site, I saw that it said that third party applications like Disk Warrior might be able to help. It reminded me that my friend made me get that program when he sold me his Mini (sorry I didn’t mention it earlier). I booted from the Disk Warrior CD and told it to repair the disk. And guess what: it actually worked!
While I still had the same problems: could not mount disk images, etc. I was at least able to do an Archive Install of 10.4 (I followed all the specific instructions as outlined). And that worked, too. Now, everything is working again!
I updated to 10.4.5 (I figured that was the last one working OK, so go with what works. I am sure 10.4.6 is fine, but as the xlab Web site notes, “Before installing software updates, you should decide if "now" is the right time.” And, frankly, after what I have been through, “now” is certainly not the right time.
One last question: all the applications seem to be working just fine. How do I delete the “Previous Systems” folder? Where is it located? Is the procedure the same as the one outlined in this document, “Mac OS X 10.2: How to Delete a Previous Systems Folder” (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25461) or is it different for 10.4?
Again, thank you so very, very much for your help. I really appreciated it.
Best,
Amir

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

There is a problem with the activation process between your machine and Apple to verify your machine is allowed to reinstall OS X.
You will have to call AppleCare to resolve this issue. (even if you did't purchase AppleCare you still call their number)
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Another method is to take it back to the AppleStore you purchased the machine at.

If you don't want to do a fresh install, just do a Repair Install:
Boot to the Windows CD. Do not press F2 or anything else, just wait until it gets to the point where it is asking if you want to "set up Windows XP now, Press Enter" or "Repair a Windows XP Installation Using Recovery Console".
Do NOT choose Recovery Console. Instead, choose to Set up Windows XP now.
On the next screen, it will ask you to choose "R" to repair the current Windows XP installation. **Do NOT press escape because that will install XP clean**. Instead, choose R to repair the current XP installation.
Follow the prompts to repair your XP installation.
    Warnings:
    1) A Repair Install usually has worked pretty nicely for me in the past. However, everything has risks. These risks are YOURS not anyone elses
    2) The repair USUALLY works nicely and will leave all your settings, data, and programs intact, but you will have to reinstall all Windows Critical Updates and Service Packs after you do the repair. Because of this, disconnect your internet connection (unless you have a hardware firewall) until after the Repair is complete and you activate your software firewall. At that point, reinstall all critical Windows Updates and Service Packs.
    3) I'm telling you to disconnect your internet connection because otherwise you will get a virus between the time when the repair is done and you finish installing critical updates, if you don't have a firewall running.
    4) Backup your drive before doing anything I've mentioned above. Don't blame us if you lose all your stuff!!!
Now, if you need better instructions, refer to Microsoft's own instructions for repairing your installation:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341
Read everything there closely. You probably want to do Method 2, but don't skip down to there until you read everything else first.

  • PLEASE HELP!! KERNEL_TASK IS KILLING ME!

I have been having problems with the kernel_task using up ridiculous amounts of of CPU. It doesn't seem to be a heat problem since it happens mostly when I play videos (streaming) as well as editing video using Adobe Premiere. Please help. I need a functioning Mac Pro to complete everyday tasks as well as work.

Streaming video uses a huge amount your CPU - a fact you can verify by going to your Activity Monitor. This is just your computer doing what it does. As long as you don't see problems with performance or from your monitor, or excess heat, or error messages, this isn't a problem.

How many versions of Mavericks has there been? I have installed one. The only one I have ever seen. Then updated it twice. And never used Crapware like YASU or CleanMyMac or MacKeeper etc etc and have never had an issue. And i certainly would never recommend a program that even the developers say
"In the testing I’ve done using Yasu on Mavericks, it has performed well, so I believe it’s okay to use Yasu on Mac OS 10.9.x. Of course, I have to provide the disclaimer that I can’t guarantee 100% compatibility… If you decide to use Yasu on Mavericks, you’re doing it at your own risk."

  • Please help - Dreamweaver Image Map Tool/Outlook for Mac

    Hello:
I was wondering if you could help me navigate through an issue I am having with the image map tool.  I have created a design file is PSD, saved it as a JPG, then transferred it into Dreamweaver to link the design to a web page.  However, I would like to embed different links within one HTML file to e-mail out, so I used the image map tool to do so.  However, when I copy/paste the completed HTML into an Outlook for Mac message (Command A; Command C; Command V), the image map/additional links do not transfer over once the file is pasted in an e-mail.  I also tested this with G-mail and the Apple E-mail app, and was not successful.  Please help.

You can't paste images into e-mails.  Use absolute links to images hosted on your domain server like this:

  • PLEASE HELP!! (May need super advanced mac experts)

One line sums it up: my MacBook won't start up.
It starts, because there's the "start up tone", or chime, whatever it's called. But after that, there's just this white screen (in the middle of which an Apple logo will appear under normal circumstances) and some noisy beeping. There's a pattern to the beeping: first one is 2 beeps, and then 3 beeps in every 2 or 3 seconds. Plus, when it beeps, the sleep light follows the pattern.
You may think I can boot from the Mac OS Installation Disc, or do a hardware test, or anything like that. I'm sorry, but I can't. I tried, but I can't.
But somehow, just this one time, I got into Target Disk Mode, using my old Powerbook as the host. Backed up everything to an external HD, and then I thought I could erase the HD on my MacBook, and everything would be fine. But the problem is still the same.
Now I can't boot from anything, can't perform hardware test (which I believe is pretty pointless anyway), can't boot in Safe Mode, etc etc. I can't even eject the Mac OS Installation disc because none of keys (including the eject key) have any effect during startup now.
    Please help!!!
PS My MacBook is running on 10.5.3, but I think that's irrelevant now, because the HD is blank the moment.

If you cannot startup from the installation disc without the same problem occurring, then it would appear you have a serious hardware problem. The beeping suggests a possible problem with RAM, but generally the normal startup chime is replaced by the beeping. However, you may still have a RAM related problem.
In any event you will need to take the computer in for service. We cannot fix hardware.

  • HELP!! 10.4.9 Killed my Mac Mini

    Hi,
I installed two updates today; the iPhoto update and the 10.4.9 update to my G4 Mac Mini. Both updates downloaded ok (although the OSX update took hours on a fast DSL connection, which was strange) and the iPhoto install went ok, but the mini crashed when trying to install the 10.4.9 update. The screen went grey and a darker grey box came up telling me to restart.
I did, and the familiar grey screen with Apple logo appeared. Next came a blue screen with progress bar, but this is where it stops. It stays on this screen, no progress. I popped in the install disk and verified the disk; no errors were reported. Next I repaired permissions, of which there were many to repair.
I then changed the start up disk, restarted, but with the same results; I get the grey screen with the Apple logo and then the blue screen with progress bar, but that's it.
What can I do? How can I get my mini back to life?
    Bruno

Well, at least your mac is mounting the disk.
    I would try the following.
1 If you can, download the combo updater for 10.4.9 for your processor type, either ppc or intel.
    INTEL http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1049comboupdate intel.html
    PPC http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1049comboupdate ppc.html
2 Copy that downloaded file to an external firewire or usb drive if you can.
3 Boot your problem mac in Safe Mode. Simply hold down the shift key until you see the Apple logo. It will take longer than normal to boot.
4 Connect the external drive to your mini. Locate the combo updater you downloaded in step 1 and double click it. Install and leave the computer alone until the installer finishes. When it's done it will ask you to restart, do that - restart. Yes I know you are installing over an installed update, that's ok, files will overwrite themselves.
5 Once up (it may do two restarts on you, this is normal) launch disk utilities. Disk utilities is a utility. It's located in applications/utilities folder.
6 Repair the disk you installed the 10.4.9 update on.
    7. Restart once more for good measure.
    I hope this helps
PS unplug anything that is not necessary incase.
Some of my notes are not founded on any documentation but this is what I did and my issues was resolved. I installed 10.4.9 on my intel imac but it was constantly upon restart only a few days later.
My symptoms and hardware differ slightly from your but I followed those same steps I gave you and in my case it got my mac back. I hope it can help you or anyone else.

  • HELP! I think I killed my Mac!

I have a Mirrored door, 1 ghz dual, G4 that I bought new in 2002. I recently needed to do some upgrades and I think I exceeded it's capacity and fried it!
I recently upgraded (a month ago) to 2 ghz of ram, added a 20" LCD monitor, and added a 4th internal drive 2 nights ago (500 ghz ATA, joining my 2 old 80 gig drives and a 20 gig drive). The new HD was added in desperation when my external 230 gig drive went down with all my UNbacked up files on it. I was able to getthe drive working again and desperate to get everything on all my drives backed up. Finished backing everything up to the 500 yesterday morning and everything seemed fine... then last night I was reading email and suddenly my screen went blue and wouldn't come back. I restarted and at first the power wouldn't even come on... or the button lighted up and then died out before the start up tone. I thought maybe the power supply couldn't handle the load, so after letting it cool down for a long time, I unhooked 2 of the internal drives... leaving my startup and 500 gig running. This time the power came on, start up sound played and the button stayed light (and I could hear fans), but the monitor stayed black. I turned the monitor on and off and got the little "analog / digital" box in the upper left corner for a couple minutes and it seemed like the screen lightened a tiny but, but then it gave up and went black again.
Soooo... is my mac dead... the motherboard fried... or could it just be my graphics card? How can I tell?
I'm in the middle of several huge deadlines and need to resolve this NOW... if it can't be fixed today I need to buy a new Mac immediately, get everything installed and get the deadlines done by Monday even if I work all day and night through the weekend, so I'd really appreciate advice ASAP.
I have every reason to believe my data is intact... but if I get a new Mac, is there anyway to move my internal drive to the new Mac so I don't have to reinstall all of my software or is that just an exquisite form of suicide?
If I get a Mac Pro (w/intel processor) will my regular Mac OSX software still work ok? Or Should I go for a G5 machine for convenience?
    HELP!
    G4 dual 1Ghz, Mirrored Door   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately this goes to prove why backups should be external, not internal. Neither G5 nor Intel Macs support ATA/IDE drives directly. They use the new SATA technology. However, a Firewire/IDE hard drive case will let you use the old hard drives on a new Mac. The G5 Mac has better support for Mac OS 9 applications, though not as good as a non-Firewire 800 Mirror Dual G4 (the Firewire 800 Dual G4 only could use Classic and couldn't boot Mac OS 9), and the Intel Macs have no support for Mac OS 9 at all. In addition if your applications have no Universal equivalent they may run slower on an Intel Mac than a G5 as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#INTEL
Macmaps will be down briefly today for an upgrade.
If once you connect the old hard drives you aren't able to see them on the new machine, you may want to use some of the tools on my backup FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    and directory FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
In the worst case scenario you may be forced to use a data recovery firm.
Good luck in retrieving your data!
