Please help a Mac newbie!

I need to buy a MacBook Pro for my son--it's required for the advertising graduate school he will be attending. I am only familiar with PC specs--so I'm not sure how many bells and whistles we need to put on a MacBook Pro to make sure it performs with no glitches. My son will be using this computer for photo and video editing, page layouts, website production, copywriting, and general personal use--iTunes, etc.
First question--2.4 GHz or 2.6 GHz processor? Do we need the fastest processor for video editing?
Second question--2 GB or 4GB of RAM? I've read that Macs handle memory much better than PCs. We need a minimum of 4 GB of RAM on our PC to handle video editing functions. Can we get by with 2 GB on the Mac?
Third question--Final Cut Studio 2 or Adobe Premiere, et. al. for video editing?
Finally, can you truly edit video on a laptop with an external hard drive connected? (If so, should the external hard drive be firewire or is USB okay?)
I appreciate any and all advice from experienced Macbook Pro users!
On Edit: Which screen glossy or flat? I'm truly not sure which is better for his needs.

As someone who works in advertising and instructs at an advertising school, I would strongly recommend against the glossy screen. It may look better at first glance, but that's because it tends to blow out contrast a bit. The matte screen will give you something that is not only more accurate but more reliable to calibrate with when you're trying to make what's on your screen match exactly with a production press or even regular printer.
Regarding the other questions, I think the processor speed (2.4 or 2.6) is mostly preference and cost. If you can afford it, it will help him when video editing or when working on a 500 mb photoshop file.
I'd definitely go for more RAM. Right now, Final Cut is simply more pervasive. That may change in the future, of course. Hopefully by then, either he or his future employer will be flipping the bill.
As far as external drives, you can indeed edit video with one and I've had many people warn me against using the internal drive if you're doing really heavy duty editing (it works fine if doing a home movie or personal project). In this case, get a Firewire 800 drive. For truly superior performance, he should consider a very fast RAID setup. If editing an uncompressed Quicktime file for example - a :30 commercial will usually be around 1 gigabyte - most computers and drives aren't even able to play such a file. It will play with extreme stutter if at all if you're using your internal drive as your scratch disk. My guess is he won't be working with files as big as these, though.
Now I will offer one word of caution on all this. I'm not sure what your son is intending to study (copywriting, art direction, graphic design, video, web design, etc.), but you really don't need all this power if, say, he's studying to become a copywriter and is going to be taking one video editing class. Of course, if money is not an issue, the more computer muscle the better. Waiting for video to render or for a photoshop filter to be applied to a megalarge file can never be too quick.
Sorry for such a long entry. Good luck to you and your son.

  • Please help this Mac newbie

I just got my first Mac two days ago. I bought a duo core iMac used off eBay. I love it so far, and I felt I got a good deal as the guy I bought it off of left his whole iTunes library for me to enjoy.
Anyway after I uploaded all my cds into iTunes I updated the firmware, as it had kept popping everytime I logged back into Mac OSX.
After doing so I was shocked to find that my iTunes library and all my personal settings in firefox etc... were gone!
All the files are still there but I was wondering why this happened, and if there was way I could just roll back te update or something (I think thats what they call it in Windows). Or if there was an easy way to get my same iTunes library back, as there are many duplicate folders and cds on here for some reason.
    Thanks for any help

gter you double click on your hard drive icon you will see a little house at the top that says "home" click on that and you will see a music folder. Click on that and you will see an iTunes folder. Click on that and you will see an iTunes music folder. Click on that and you will see all your music songs. I've found out where my songs are that have an exclamation point by them. I open the library window and drag that song and plop it in it's appropriate place in my library. Then I delete the exclamation pointed song. Now, there must be a way to take them all at once and stick them in your library. Maybe u just drag the folder iTunes music and plop it down in your empty library window. Anyone know?

Please help my mac is so slow coming up and going to different places. the flower keeps coming up all the time?????

I'm having this problem but only online. I've confirmed that it is the computer (2007 MacBook), and it only happens when I'm using wi-fi connection. My other MacBook (2010) is connecting with wi-fi fine, and when I plug this MacBook into the ethernet connection it is also doing fine. I've re-started, check the memory, deleted cookies, histories, gone as far as uninstalling and re-installing browswers. Used the System Preferences network diagnostics and got an "all good". Ideas appreciated.

Hi again. It seems like there is information people are looking for to help you that they don't have. It occurs to me that you have a new Mac and you perhaps have an Apple Store with a Genius Bar in your area. A great experience for you might be to visit one and let them setup your mail for you (for free) and debug, if there is a problem of any sort. You can make an advanced reservation at Apple Stores at http://www.apple.com/buy/. Select the nearest store and make reservation. If you haven't been in an Apple Store, you're in for a treat.

Ok heres the story i picked up an old crt slot loading i mac for cheap because i may need it for school, and even if it turn out that i wont need it i still want to use it. the computer runs OS X but every time i start it i get a kernel panic, even running in single user, so i figured the best way to get it to work would be a clean install, but the computer came from a business, and doesn't have the disks with it, I have backups of the same disks on my windows computer that i got from my original mac they are 10.4.1 and its the CD version. there is 4 images and they are in .dmg how can i burn these with my windows computer so that i can fix my mac. or is there any way to fix it without having to burn these CD's. please help i just want to get it to work, but can't afford to go buy a new copy of OS X.

I am not sure of all the details, but the mac os software when installed on a Machine can be customized for a particular machine family. This tends to be the case when the machine comes from the factory. The software that will work on any machine cames from the retail versions of Mac OS. In summary, the software in your dmg files are likely to work only on the machine family that they came from. Hence, it won't work on your machine.
and its the CD version. there is 4 images and they are in .dmg how can i burn these with my windows computer so that i can fix my mac. or is there any way to fix it without having to burn these CD's. please help i just want to get it to work, but can't afford to go buy a new copy of OS X.
Have you stopped using this machine? If not, you have a copyright problem.
I suggest you get a copy of 10.3 on ebay for 20 to 30 dollars. I'd guess. Be sure to get the retail version that will install on any machine. Tiger will come down when 10.5 is out this month. Make sure your machine can read the cd/dvd media. Like don't get a dvd when you have only a cd reader.
Your university may be sell Mac OS at a discount too.
Be sure your firmware is at the latest level.
Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down commandoption+of
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
Some machine may not contain the firmware level but some other number which can be translated to the firmware level.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?

  • Please help!! Newbie here really need help. Numlock, divers, backup, recovery disk

    Hi everyone
I finally found where to post
I really wish someone could or would help me
I have a lenovo g550 for about 4-5 years And I was happy with it
few days go I cleaned installed windows Ii got a friend to help infests he put it on the d drive then c drive And c drive gainsaid he formatted my d drive chlorinating on therein was a real unswayable I kind of sorted it out. And I learnt a lot bout the oem partitioning deleted that though. Can someone tell me If I can boot or recover my previous vista from there.?
If not its fine but then I would like to know is can I change the oem partition with the image or recovery (whatever you call it) of the new windows  7 or how to go about creating a recovery disk.
After installing the new windows my PC seems to be fine but I don't know If I kept all the drivers And whatever goes with it. What are all the drivers I need And where do I find If I have them or not. I am not really worried about my data as I want to start fresh.
Another thing I noticed is my number keypad stopped working all of a sudden. When I press the numlock button it beeps and the light does go on and off. When its on it doesn't give me numbers e.g... If I press 5 it actually highlights where the cursor is.
And my mouse/trackpad is not the same as it was before. When I had vista on the right of the trackpad I could use it to scroll up and down and the bottom of the trackpad allowed me to scroll left to right. This function is no longer there. I have to use the arrows to go up and down.
Somebody please help as I do need my laptop for work purposes.
    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

hi any drivers you should need you should be able to get through support drivers&downloads link at top of this sites page bud you could use partition magic to clear all partitions and create new multible one if you wish the rest wait till after you put drivers in and see if probs still exist bud

  • Help a Mac newbie choose - 21.5" i5 or i7?

    Hi Guys,
I've been a PC user since the middle ages (not really - 1995 to be exact). I've finally decided to buy a new iMac as I love the simple intuitive nature of the OS. I already own an iPhone 4 and an Apple TV. I love them.
So, it boils down to this. I love the look of the 21.5" - the 27" looks awesome, but I don't have the space for it in my study. My computing requirements are pretty simple; I'd love to be able to have full functionality using: iLife, iWork and iTunes. I currently have:
    *about 5,000 songs on iTunes
*11,000 photos and maybe 50 short HD video clips (I use a Canon 550d, capable of 24ffs 1080p)
*a few GB of MS Office documents.
    *a 500Gb external hard drive.
    *a €2,000 budget.
    So, the questions!
a). Will the entry-level 21.5" suffice for my needs, given that I already have a 500Gb external hard drive?
b). Will its 2.5ghz i5 chip run all my apps smoothly, especially 1080p 24fps video clips from my Canon (this is the main reason I'm buying the iMac)
c). Is 4Gb RAM and 500Gb of storage *really* enough, or am I selling myself short for future proofing the machine?
Thank you all for your patience with this Mac newbie!
    FrankDaTank.

    Frank,
The 21.5 is way more than enough for your needs. You should investigate a couple of things though, first you will need another external HD to use as a backup. Operating without backup is a roll of the dice, get yourself a good quality 1TB drive and you should be set. You can use this for Time Machine, if you're not familiar with TM yet watch Time Machine Tutorial, it's only a couple of minutes long. You can easily find a very high quality 1TB drive in the $100 range. The only brand I'd steer away from is Western Digital, they tend to not work well with Macs.
Start out with 4GB of RAM, if this proves to not be enough upgrading RAM is a 5 minute job, inexpensive and doesn't affect the warranty. You can upgrade to 12GB for as low as $76 which provides a lot of headroom. If that is of interest visit OWC at www.macsales.com, they specialize in Macs, have good prices and excellent support including "how to" videos.
In addition I'd also recommend getting AppleCare. This extends the warranty to 3 full years and provides 3 years of  telephone support.

  • Please help, After mac 10.5.8 mail server migrated to snow leopard server?

    Hi,
All my old emails date has changed to the date on which i migrated to snow leopard server, all the old emails show as they arrived on 31st of Dec 2009.
How do I fix it. Very Very important to me to have the arrived date.
    Please help
    Thanks,
    Gulab Pasha

here is a link of other users having wrong date problems after upgrading to 10.6
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2134525
Some people have managed to fix their date problems. The easiest workaround is to add the column "Date Sent" under (View->Columns->Date Sent) in mail.app and to sort by the send date not the received date.
    Hope this helps

  • Please help. Mac won't start.

Please help me. I have no AppleCare so I can't call them.
My mother bought me a MacBook pro earlier this year but we didn't purchase apple care. Right now I'm having a problem with startup. Everytime I try to start my MacBook Pro up, it automatically goes to os x utilities. It never did this before and I don't know what to do. Can someone please walk me through how to get my computer back to normal? I really can't afford another computer right now.

If it's less then a year old it's still under warranty and Apple will fix it free. In fact you can go to the apple.com, support and chat with someone who could probably tell you how to fix it.

  • 10.4.7 CPU Whine!!!! Please HeLp.. Newbie!!!!

    Hi Guys..
I recently got a MBP (week 23) standard config.. As far as i remember i didnt notice the whirring or buzzing sound (known as CPU whine) until i upgraded to 10.4.7..
Well its pretty faint but i can easily here it when i am in a silent room n the thought that i have it now really makes me hear that n indeed this bugs me.. This is my first ever Apple product n first ever laptop (I am a newbie)..
I talked to a guy on apple support n told him about the issue n he said it might be the inverter buzz n is a hardware issue.. BUT i told him tht it cant be hardware as it goes away whn i turn on the photobooth or i do CPU intensive tasks, so it seems to me that its a software thingy..
    So i have two quetions:
    1) Is it a hardware issue or not??? If it is then i am gona send it back (ny suggestions on tht too will be appreciated)..
    2) Other than the slight whine, ITS PERFECT, totaly NO ISSUES.. Jus wondering tht i turn the photobooth on to make it silent what effect does it make on the battery??? Cant figure out
Any help will be much appreciated as i need to make a decision tht whether i m gona send it back or keep it (plz provide suggestions on tht too if you can..)
    Kind Regards

    Hello Singh1699,
Yes, I already talked to one of the Apple staff in Ireland (I lived in Swiss) and they admitted that it IS the hardware related problem. They said the build is not somehow fully compatible with the core program of MAC OSX causing the noise from CPU and, quite a few times, with the power invertor.
You can search my posts here for more information about this issues. What I would recommend you to do is try to get a hold of Apple store, ask them for a replacement (you can even put the noise on phone for them to hear as I did). You have to be quick before your 14 days of return expires. That what I did and now I am waiting for my new one to arrive.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers,
    James

  • Please help a Photoshop newbie recreate a text effect... :(

If someone would be kind enough to help me out on this, I've been working on it for last few hours... the .psd is the effect that I want to accomplish.
I downloaded the effect file here: 108 Free Glowing Neon Social Networking Icons » WebTreats ETC
With the help of a few community members & my own trouble shooting - I figured out that the effects file had been converted to object. So I copied & saved the styles (see arrows).
Steps I did after are noted in the red box on the screenshot, essentially:
    created a new text box
    applied first saved style
    duplicated layer
    applied second saved style
duplicated layer and created plain black text
    converted all to shape
Here's what I attempted & failed miserably to create the outline appearance that the .psd text shows
    7. selected> color range >dropper >black
    8. when selection was visible, created transparent layer
    9. tried applying stroke
    10. Hide the black layer
I still cannot get it to work.  Do I need to create a mask?
Can some one PRETTY PLEASE give me a step-by-step from this stage that I'm on?
I'm a newbie, please be kind... Please!
I have a client deadline & need to figure this out.- ANY help MUCH appreciated!!!

  • Xsan Breakdown (please help an Xsan newbie)

    Hi Guys,
I am a complete newbie to Xsan, but I know it's something that I need in my studio soon. Can some explain the process involved in creating a Xsan environment? I have done quite a bit of research for a few months now, but still don't understand certain things. On the network do you install Xsan on the clients? Controllers? If someone could explain the whole process of setting it up that would really, really help me!
    Thanks

I would answer your question in two parts:
    1) in terms of Xsan concepts (what is it?)

    2) Installation procedures (very clear step by step guide):

  • Please help - reinstalling mac os.

Hi all this is my first post. I have stupidly tried to dual boot my Mac book pro with windows xp. I have managed to install windows but the version I installed only had service pack 1. Now I have service back two and xp professional installed the Mac comes up with the dreaded blue screen. I should have never installed windows and I want to set the laptop back to when it worked on Mac os x (which is so much better than windows). Please can any tell me now to remaster, so I can start using my laptop again. (I have tried putting the Mac install disks in when off then turning it on but can’t seem to get any screen to come to remaster) Thanks in advance for your help.

Hold down the option key at boot, see if that allows you to choose OSX for booting. If it does, good. After that, if you want to get rid of Windows, just use the bootcamp assistant (under Utilities in your Application folder) to remove the Windows partition. No need to reinstall OSX.

  • Please help a complete newbie get to grips with website project

    Hi all,
I've been following a lynda.com tutorial called Creating a First Web Site with Dreamweaver CS6. I have limited HTML and CSS knowledge, but i thought i'd be fine if i didn't stray too much from the advice offered in this tutorial. The problem is, the tutorial is designed around creating a responsive website. Whereas the site i'd already designed in Illustrator uses fixed width & height type rusted metallic backgrounds and boxes that the text sits on is mean't to sit on. Anyway, all was going well until i hit the section that deals with creating a mobile layout; in particular a mobile.css. Obviously my fixed parameter boxes, created in illustrator, don't adapt to being scaled down from their original settings.
I hope i'm making some kind of sense, since i've had very little sleep because the little one has a cold.
So my question is, do i create a whole new mobile layout in illustrator? So for example my desktop background is 1366x1000, so i''d want to scale this down to 480x800 for mobile. Likewise the same for the rusted metallic text boxes. The header box at the top of the page is 940px by 185px, so i'd create one that's roughly (just a crude guesstimate) 380px by 85px etc etc. I've uploaded a still shot of my project here, so you get a better idea of what 'm talking about - http://imageshack.us/f/15/ba9t.jpg/
The code for my html is -

As you can see my knowledge of coding is abysmal, i'm definitely more of a designer than a developer. Can any one of you benevolent, intelligent and hopefully patient individuals please offer me some help and advice on how to progress, and also how to clean this cluster f*ck of a nightmare coding up. So that i can transform this into a decent desktop/mobile website. Do i have to create a whole new mobile website. and some how link to it? So that a device trying to view this on a smaller resolution automatically accesses the mobile version. How would i proceed with this?
Thanks again for any help you can offer me, it's most appreciated

Hi & welcome to the Dreamweaver Forums!
Illustrator or Photoshop are OK for making images and design comps.  But don't use them to generate code.  The code is hopelessly rigid and unstable; not suitable for use on real web sites.
You'll be doing yourself a huge favor if you close DW for about a week and learn everything you can about HTML, CSS and web design theory.  Without a working knowledge of fundamentals, DW is going to be a frustratingly steep learning curve.   If you come to grips with code first, DW is fairly easy to learn.
    Tutorials sites:
    http://www.html.net/
    http://w3schools.com/
    http://www.csstutorial.net/
    http://phrogz.net/css/HowToDevelopWithCSS.html
    http://webdesign.tutsplus.com/sessions/web-design-theory/
#1 Don't paint yourself into a box.  Web pages need to be flexible to work in different displays and devices.
#2 Page height is determined by content; not explicit values.  Your CSS layout needs to be built in such a way as to accommodate both long and short pages.  Otherwise it will fall apart when visitors change their browser settings.
#3 Positioning (APDivs or Layers) are pure poison in primary layouts.  98% of what you do requires no positioning whatsoever.  Learn to use CSS floats and margins to align elements.
#4 Start with one of the pre-built CSS Layouts in DW.  Go to File > New > Blank page > HTML.  Choose a layout from the 3rd panel and hit the Create Button.  SaveAs index.html.  Add your own images, text and CSS backgrounds.  Examine the HTML & CSS code in Split View to learn how the page is structured.
Feel free to post back if your run into any problems.
    Good luck!
    Nancy O.
