Please Help A Newcomer ...
First of all, since I'm a newcomer, and there's a chance I'm posting this in the wrong place, bear with me.
I recently downloaded the J2SE SDK and NetBeans 4.1. And, I'm trying to develop a desktop application with it. I'll leave the details of the application aside for a moment, but there's a host of issues I want to address before I even get to the actual business of coding my application.
First of all, design time. And layout managers.
I understand perfectly well the underlying theory - namely, that layout managers provide cross-platform formatting of visual content. In practice, however, it's proving to be one of the biggest sources of annoyance I'm encountering with this development system.
First of all, my top-level application window ALWAYS starts up with ridiculous dimensions. As in too small for any internal content to be rendered satisfactorily. And ALWAYS heads for the top left hand corner of the display. Unless of course I write code to explicitly set the size and position of my top-level window. But surely the whole point of an IDE is to remove such bureaucratic piddling about from the programmer, leaving said programmer to get on with the actual nuts and bolts of the application? And if it doesn't do this, and simply shovels these chores into the programmer's lap, what's the point of the IDE in the first place?
The same thing happens with EVERY top level container. Unless I waste time writing code to explicitly set the size and position, it ends up being positioned at the top left of the display, and rendered at a totally useless size. Which in the case of one of my dialogue boxes, meant that when I first tested it, I couldn't access any of the widgets on it (made all the more amusing by the fact that the dialogue box wasn't resizeable).
Now, there happens to be a 'preferred size' property for all of these components. But, here's the fun part. I can't edit them at design time. To make matters even more hilarious, instead of telling me I can't edit them at design time, the property editor pops up, maintaining a glorious fiction of editing the property, allowing me to specify values, which it then promptly ignores. And continues to render all my top level containers at stupid sizes.
Furthermore, if I want to change the look and feel of the application, again, I have to dive in and write code to do this. Otherwise I get the default every time. Nowhere in the documentation (either in the Help Files or online, both of which are monstrous edifices seemingly designed to provide some bureaucrat with a source of illicit thrills) is any mention made of being able to determine look and feel of my developed application by telling the IDE to do this. Once again, I have to engage in tedious mucking around writing code to do this, when I should have spent the past week actually coding the application. Frustration a plenty. So much for the publicity blurb. I'm almost reaching the point where I'm going to uninstall the whole shooting match and write the application in assembler (yes, assembler!) because I'll actually experience fewer frustrations ... at least then I know from the start that i'll have to engage in tedious mucking around with low-level matters from the word go. Part of the reason I decided to give Java a try (apart from the possibility of improving my recruitment marketablility) was because of the publicity hoopla about how I could get on and actually develop my application (or to use the blurb, 'concentrate on the business logic' ... something tells me this was put together by some MBA rather than a real programmer), which thus far has turned out to be yet another case of shiny trinket expectations dangled before the eyes followed by immense disappointment at the total failure in the follow through.
Now, before I give up on this and go back to my assembler roots, I'm going to give this another try. Anyone out there care to help me address these issues, or am I going to discover once again that so-called "modern development environments" (don't even think of getting me started on Microsnot's efforts unless you want to be killed by the flying shrapnel) are so much wishful thinking combined with lamentable implementation?
Oh, and is there any chance i'll be able to place widgets on a dialogue box where ***I*** want them to be, and arranged how I want them to be arranged, without either [1] the IDE deciding that I am to be completely ignored in this respect while it places the widgets where it thinks it would be a good joke to place them in order to precipitate maximum annoyance, or [2] having to immerse myself in yet more coding bureaucracy for who knows how long before the shiny trinket promise of being able to 'concentrate on the business logic' looked like being remotely fulfilled?
Here's hoping ...
Well, if there had been some indication in the legion of documentation I've perused (which again, seems to have been designed along the lines of 'if you know what to look for, then you already know the answer') as to how to achieve this, I wouldn't have posted here. But, having spent a week looking for some indication as to how to overcome what should, at bottom, be nonexistent problems, and having found nothing that even remotely hints at the answer, I decided to come here.
One, as I've already said, top level containers materialise in an unusuable fashion unless I actually go to the trouble of explicitly writing code to force them to be a workable size. Two, widgets seem to have a life of their own. I've tried experimentally using different layout managers, and each time all that happens is that a different set of annoyances materialise.
The irony is, that when it comes to managing the actual code, the system has features I really enjoy. And catches a whole range of problems before you even get to the stage of issuing the 'Clean and Build' command. That I like a LOT. But GUI designing, which should (after all these years of GUIs being in existence) be a simple matter of 'place it here, hey presto', seems to occupy some Kafkaesque parallel universe.
First of all, I'd like my top level containers to be a workable size. As I've already said, setting the preferred size in the property sheet has no effect whatsoever. The IDE just ignores any attempt to set this. Which is weird, because when I write code to set the preferred size, hey presto, it works. But once again, I maintain that the whole point of an IDE is to handle these chores and let me get on with the underlying machinery. And thus far it isn't doing this.
As for widget placement, I could simply abandon layout managers altogether, and go for absolute placement. But then I'd have to write code to make sure that everything was sensibly placed and sized every time a top level container was resized. Which is what the layout managers are supposed to do. Supposedly freeing me of this chore and, once again, letting me concentrate on the application's nuts and bolts. But, thus far, all my attempts at getting layout managers to handle this chore, which is after all what they were supposedly designed for, results in desk-banging frustration.
Now, if I could be pointed at a web page that explains all of this in plain English, this would be a great help. Because opening 23 different browser windows to keep track of a vast web of API links in the hope that one of them will cause the little light bulb to pop up above the head is again, more than a tad frustrating.

I am getting the following error while launching an java web start apllication.
Exception in thread"javaWSApplicationMains"java.lan.NoClassDefFound:SimpleSerial.
The jnlp file i have used is as follows:

<application-desc main-class="Aeon_PManager" />

</jnlp>
The java code is as follows:
SimpleSerial.java
import java.io.*;
//import java.lang.*;
//import java.lang.ClassNotFoundException;
Interface class for SimpleSerial.
If you don't know what an interface is, don't worry. An interface defines the functions
that can be called by implementors of this class. Currently there are two implementors,
SimpleSerialNative, and SimpleSerialJava. There might be more in the future.
SimpleSerialNative requires the file "SimpleSerialNative.dll" to be in the same folder as your Java
project file. It's that simple.
SimpleSerialJava requires the correct installation of Sun's Javacomm communication package. It's much
more powerful, but it can be tricky for the newcomer to configure, and use.
If you have problems with one, why don't you try the other.
A VERY SIMPLE IMPLEMENTATION:
public static void main(String args[]) {
SimpleSerial ss; // delcare the SimpleSerial object
ss = new SimpleSerialNative(2); // The argument is the commport number. There is no Comm0.
ss.writeByte((byte)'a'); // write a byte to the serial port
// Give the PIC chip time to digest the byte to make sure it's ready for the next byte.
try { Thread.sleep(1); } catch (InterruptedException e) {}
ss.writeByte((byte)'!'); // write another byte to the serial port
String inputString = ss.readString(); // read any string from the serial port
System.out.println("I read the string: " + inputString);
A few important things to note:
1. When you write data to the serial port, it just writes the data, whether or not the PIC chip is
ready to receive data. There's no handshaking or signaling. If you send data and the PIC chip
isn't ready for it, it will be ignored. Some PIC chips have a hardware UART which will buffer a
few bytes of data for later retrieval. But this isn't a cure-all. If the buffer fills up, it
creates an error condition which prevents further data from being read. You need to include
custom PIC code to reset the error flag.
2 In contrast to the PIC chip, the computer has a rather large hardware buffer. If the PIC chip
sends serial data to your computer when you're not around to read it, it gets stored.
3. If you make a call to readByte(), and there's no data to be read, readByte() waits until there
is data. If you want to know how much data (if any) is available, make a call to available().
4. Conversely, if you make a call to readBytes() or readString() and there's no data to be read,
readBytes() returns a byte array of zero length, and readString() returns and empty string.
5. If you want to use Sun's JavaComm package instead of this code, subsitute your calls to
new SimpleSerialNative(2);
with
new SImpleSerialJava(2);
public interface SimpleSerial {
// These are copied right out of WINBASE.H
// Most applications should be fine with the defaults.
public static final int NOPARITY = 0;
public static final int ODDPARITY = 1;
public static final int EVENPARITY = 2;
public static final int MARKPARITY = 3;
public static final int SPACEPARITY = 4;
public static final int ONESTOPBIT = 0;
public static final int ONE5STOPBITS = 1;
public static final int TWOSTOPBITS = 2;
Returns the number of bytes available at the time of this call.
It's possible there are more bytes by the time readByte() or
readBytes() is executed. But there will never be fewer.
public int available();
public void waitForData(int n);
public boolean writeString(String string);
returns TRUE if port is fully operationsal
returns FALSE if there is a problem with the port
public boolean isValid();
Be sure to close your serial port when done. Note that port is
automatically closed on exit if you don't close it yourself
public void close();
Reads a single byte from the input stream.
Return value will be from -128 to 127 (inclusive)
If no data at serial port, waits in routine for data to arrive.
Use available() to check how much data is available.
If error, returns 256.
public int readByte();
Reads all the bytes in the serial port.
If no bytes availble, returns array with zero elements.
Never waits for data to arrive
public byte[] readBytes();
Reads bytes from serial port and converts to a text string.
DO NOT use this routine to read data. Char->Byte converstion
does strange things when the values are negative. For non-
text values, use readBytes() above
public String readString();
Writes a single byte to the serial port.
This writes the data, whether the PIC is ready to receive or not.
Be careful not to overwhelm the PIC chip with data.
On pics without a hardware UART, the data will be ignored.
On pics with a hardware UART, overflowing will loose data AND require
the UART on the PIC to be reset. You can reset the UART in PIC code,
or manually turn the PIC off and then on.
NOTE: A byte has a value in the range of -128 to 127
NOTE: If you want to write a character, you need to cast it to a byte,
for example: simpleSerial.writeByte((char)'b');
public boolean writeByte(byte val);
For more advanced use. Gets the input stream associated with serial port
public InputStream getInputStream();
For more advanced use. Gets the output stream associated with serial port
public OutputStream getOutputStream();
Please help I am the beginner in web start.PleaseNotes:
1) Please use the code tags when posting code or JNLP/HTML. It helps to retain indentation and avoids asterisks and plus sings being interpreted as formatting marks. To do that, select the code/JNLP etc. and click the CODE button seen on the Plain Text tab of the message posting form.
2) That launch file is invalid. You might check it (and the project in general) using JaNeLA.
3) The only place that SimpleSerial class could be, that the JRE would find, is in the root of aeon.jar. Is it actually there? -
My Iphoto has crashed for the last month or so! Please help!
Hi all,
I am a real apple amateur and newcomer. And I have nobody to speak to about this problem, so please help!
My IPhoto has been crashing for the last month. Every time that I open it, I get the spinning circle, that spins continuously, and I can do nothing but close it down through the utilities. I have bought an external hard drive and managed to save all of my photos/images onto this, shich is a weight off my mind. However, I need a photo package to work.
Thus far, I have tried to uninstall the IPhoto programme (by deleting it) and then reinstalling it from the disc.
My computer is a:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac10,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: IM101.00CC.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.52f9
Serial Number (system): W801450V5PC
Hardware UUID: 4D89A7AF-98E6-5A27-B961-7D68B5A553F7
If there is anyone that can help me, I would be forever grateful.
Best wishes,
SteveHi all,
Paul - thank you for the clear instructions. I followed them and had some success. Upon opening IPhoto with the Option and Command keys held down, I ticked everything and the 'rebuilding' occurred.
IPhoto now opens. However, for only a few seconds. At this point a message presents itself stating that 'IPhoto has quit unexpectedly'. This happens every time I try to reopen IPhoto. When asking for details, a page of computer code pops up. Now this computeter code is so far beyond me it may as well be written in Martian!
I am hoping that the following may mean something to you, Paul, or indeed anyone else who may be able to help. Many thnaks for any assistance anyone can offer.
Steve

Search problem with ActiveDirectory - please help
Hi,
I've tried to get a list of the users out of the Active Directory.
But I just can't get my code to work. It returns nothing back.
The problem should be simple. But I can not figure out why.
Please help!

</s:WindowedApplication>So you're completely new but you're worried someone
will use your code??
I'll try to answer the immediate questions but you really should sit through some tutorials as suggested.
Displaying a label: you can just add this in MXML and set the visibility=false, and on need address the id of the label to set the visibility to true.
(eg) <mx:Label id="lbl1" x="179" y="113" text="Label" visible="false"/> then when you need to show it in AS you can use: lbl1.visible=true; and it will display where you have it. You can also create the label on the fly in AS and position it.
"Can someone please help me to change the default background color or even insert my own background image."
Not sure where you are trying to set this but the easiest way is to use the Design View tab, select the component and then go down the list on Flex properties on the right in Flec Development Perspective.
or you can manually find your component and add backgroundColor="theColorYouWant
" in the list of attributes
background image:
Just put this under the <mx:Application > tag
<mx:backgroundImage>@Embed(source='//relative path to image in your project')</mx:backgroundImage>
"a button or how to change the state or view when that button is clicked"
click="{currentState='options'} add something this to the attributes of the MXML button component. 'options' being the name of the state you want to switch to. If your base state is not named use currentState=' ' to switch to it.
Once you've sat through the tutorials.
Do a google search for flexblogs and there are some good ones that show examples on how to do some basic to advanced things, it is very useful for the resourceful newcomer to flex.
Good luck with your project. -
Problem with threads and simulation: please help
please help me figure this out..
i have something like this:
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import javax.swing.*;
public class DrawShapes extends JApplet{
private JButton choices[];
private String names[]={"line", "square", "oval"};
private JPanel buttonPanel;
private DrawPanel drawingArea;

drawingArea=new DrawPanel(width, height);
choices=new JButton[names.length];
buttonPanel=new JPanel();
buttonPanel.setLayout(new GridLayout(1, choices.length));
ButtonHandler handler=new ButtonHandler();
for(int i=0; i<choices.length; i++){
choices=new JButton(names[i]);
buttonPanel.add(choices[i]);
choices[i].addActionListener(handler);
Container c=getContentPane();
c.add(buttonPanel, BorderLayout.NORTH);
c.add(drawingArea, BorderLayout.CENTER);
}//end init
public void setWidth(int w){
width=(w>=0 ? w : 300);
public void setHeight(int h){

appWindow.getContentPane().add(appObj);
appWindow.setSize(width, height);
appWindow.show();
}//end main*/
private class ButtonHandler implements ActionListener{
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){
for(int i=0; i<choices.length; i++){
if(e.getSource()==choices[i]){
drawingArea.setCurrentChoice(i);
break;
}//end class DrawShapes
class DrawPanel extends JPanel{
private int currentChoice=-1;
private int width=100, height=100;
public DrawPanel(int w, int h){
width=(w>=0 ? w : 100);
height=(h>=0 ? h : 100);
public void paintComponent(Graphics g){
super.paintComponent(g);
switch(currentChoice){
case 0: g.drawLine(randomX(), randomY(), randomX(), randomY());
break;
case 1: g.drawRect(randomX(), randomY(), randomX(), randomY());
break;
case 2: g.drawOval(randomX(), randomY(), randomX(), randomY());
break;
public void setCurrentChoice(int c){
currentChoice=c;
repaint();
private int randomX(){
return (int) (Math.random()*width);
private int randomY(){
return (int) (Math.random()*height);
}//end class drawPanel
That one's from a book. I used that code to start with my applet. Mine calls different merthod from the switch cases. Say I have:
case 0: drawStart(g); break;
public void drawStart(Graphics g){
/* something here */
drawMain(g);
public void drawMain(graphics g){
g.drawString("test", x, y);
//here's where i'm trying to pause
//i've tried placing Thread.sleep between these lines
g.drawLine(x, y, a, b);
//Thread.sleep here
g.drawRect(x, y, 50, 70);
}I also need to put delays between method calls but I need to synchronize them. Am I doing it all wrong? The application pauses or sleeps but afterwards, it still drew everything all at once. Thanks a lot!It is. Sorry about that. Just answer any if you want to. I'd appreciate your help. Sorry again if it caused you anything or whatever. .n_n.

Apple Mini DVI to Video Adapter is not working. Please Help...
I bought an Apple Mini DVI to Video Adapter to connect my Macbook to a TV using normal video cable. When I connect the cable, my Laptop DIsplay gives a flickr once and then it shows nothing. I checked Display in the system preference where I don't get a secondary monitor option. My TV is panasonic and it's an old one. I work on Final Cut Pro and it's very very important to see my videos on a TV. What am I doing wrong with the connection? Anyone Please Please help...
Your probably not doing anything wrong. There are thousands of users with Similar issues and it seems to be with many different adapters.
We have Mini DP to VGA (3 different brands) and they all fail most of the time. This seems more prevalent with LCD Projectors. I've tested some (50+) with VGA Monitor (HP) and they all worked, LCD Projector (Epson, Hitachi, and Sanyo) and they all fail, DLP Projector (Sanyo) and one worked.
My Apple Mini DP to DVi works most of the time. My Mini DP to HDMI (Generic non Apple) works every time.
The general consensus is that Apple broke something in the OS around 10.6.4 or 10.6.5 and its not yet fixed. As we are a school we have logged a case with the EDU Support group so will see what happens.

Please help, this is driving me crazy. I have downloaded my free PSE #9, it came with my Leica Camera. I cannot view at a glance any of my photos. There is only an icon that reads, PSE. To view any of my photos, I must click select and then preview. This gets old, and I am doing 4 times the work. I am having to use the dates to guess where my photos might be. I hate this! My old Photo Shop #5 didn't do this. When you went to my pictures, you could see every photo.
I have tried the right click and open as any program. What ever program I choose, that is the icon that appears. No photo. Still no good.
Please help.
Thanking anyone in advance,
LeicaHi,
Are you using Windows Explorer to view the files?
If so, load Explorer, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options.
Click on the View tab and make sure the first option (Always show icons, never thumbnails) is not checked.
Click on OK and see if that is any better.

Lock-Ups and Freezes PLEASE HELP
Hello everyone..
I come here to see if anyone can help me... Ive done it all and nothing is working.
I just recently started having problems with my computer, im not sure why this happend but ill try to explain everything as best as I can.
The problem started a few days ago while I was playing SWG's. I was playing and all of a sudden my machine froze, the screen locked-up and then after about 2 min the entire system restarted. I then logged back into my windows and after a while a system froze and restarted yet again. I though it was a SWGs issue but then the computer would freeze while browsing the net and doing other tasks.
I have formated my machine, re-installed my drivers, and re-installed the hardward. Nothing has worked.
My computer specs are
300watt PSU Enermax True Power
MSI K7n2 nforce2 8xagp mobo
athon 1700xp
512mb of Kingmax DDR 2700
SB audigy x-gamer sound card
MSI geforce4 ti 4200 8xAGP graphics card
Hope thats enough..
One last thing... When my computer restarts after the problem i get a message asking me to report the problem to microsoft... i located the error file and this is what was writen in it....

Hope this helps, i dont understand what it means so maybe one of you might...
Please help me on this... Ive tried everything i can...
Thanks in advanceIf what you are saying, and I am reading correctly:
The machine and game was working just peachy and all of a sudden the problem manifested itself?
Did you do ANYTHING to change your system prior to this happening to possibly have an effect?
the fast that you said you have re-loaded the OS and removed and re-installed the hardware with the same result tells me that there may be some sort of hardware failure and this could get difficult to troubleshoot.
First things first, try a memory testing software like memtest86 to see if you get any errors.

My phone wont let me download anything even free stuff or update.it keep saying something wrong with my billing info so i fix it but still cant download.I signed out sign back in still nothing please help i'm getting angry
If it says your billing info is wrong that means that your credit card issuer is refusing to approve your account. You will have to solve the problem with your bank or credit card company.

i have one of the old macbooks and wish to hook it up to my tv. do i need a mini dvi to hdmi adapter plus a 3 rca phono lead with a jack for the sound. please help as im useless at this stuff. cheers
First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.
