Please help. Can no longer connect to my Mac Mini Server

Up until two days ago, my iMacs were connecting to my Mac Mini Server normally. All of a sudden I could no longer transfer files without being prompted to type my password. Enter password and nothing happened, then got an error message stating that I don't have permission to do that. Now, a day later, no acces to my server. Has anyone ever experienced this? Can anyone please help? I've read the Mac mini booklet but doesn't have any troubleshooting info. Thanks in advance.

Hello MrHoffman,
Thank you for the advice. I went into Terminal first and typed in your command and this is what resulted:

I'm not very experienced with programming or coding, but this message seems to indicate that there's a problem with DNS just like you noted. I've highlighted the note in bold...What can you make of this or the logs from console below?

  • Can airport extreme connect using a mac mini.  the base station is not recognized so i cannot configure it manually

can airport extreme connect using a mac mini.  this airport extreme wont connect to internet via my cable modem.  I cant set it to bridge mode because it doesnt appear as a base station in airport utitlity...help

First, is your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) a 802.11n, 802.11g, or 802.11b model? Second, what is your primary goal for using this base station? Finally, is the AEBS the only router in your current network configuration?

  • Why can't I connect to my Mac Mini via Finder (but I CAN via screen sharing)?

My problem concerns a quad-core 2.0 GHz Mac Mini Server (mid 2011, I think) with SSD and 3 external hard drives. It's (a) my desktop workstation (b) our Time Machine backup repository (c) iTunes server and (d) Printopia server for our iDevices. That's it. The only thing I use the server app for, really, is Time Machine.
So recently we lost power a couple of times. As always, I ran Disk Utility, repaired permissions and verified the main disk. All appeared well.
But all is assuredly not well. Now, none of my other Macs can (a) find the Time Machine backup volume or (b) connect to the server at all. Whenever I try either thing, I receive the message below:
The network is in flawless shape otherwise. My router is the latest generation Airport Extreme Base Station. The server has a static IP, and I CAN connect to it from my other Macs by clicking Finder, then Go, then entering the IP address -- but ONLY if I use an smb:// prefix!
Moreover, even when I'm connected in this way, I STILL get the message whenever I try to connect by merely clicking the name on the finder sidebar -- or whenever I try to access the machine using Time Machine preferences. Weirder still, I CANNOT connect to the ip address via afp.
Final piece of weirdness: I can also connect to this machine from any other Mac via screen sharing. So please....
WHAT'S MY PROBLEM AND HOW CAN I FIX IT? I've wracked my brains, combed through forums and can find nobody else with this problem, let alone a solution. The problem persists when I shut down the server app.
I'm assuming that either something is corrupted or some setting is afoul, but can't figure out what it might me,
I'm just about at the point of reformatting my main drive and reinstalling Mountain Lion, but am hoping someone can spare me that pain.
    THANK YOU so much!

P.S. I have no problem at all with outbound connections from this bewitched Mini. Just inbound.
P.P.S I will, of course, be happy to provide shots of any other settings you may desire,

  • Any help with a Time Capsule install and Mac Mini server screen share?

Installed a Time Capsule, now I can't access my mac mini server.  I see the files/folders, but cannot screen share with the mini from my macbook pro.  Any help?  Error below when trying to use the "screen share" button in Finder.  Macbook Pro and Mac Mini are using Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
Connection Failed Error: Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect. Also make sure your network connection is working properly.
Please help, I'm really stuck on this one!

Try removing the TC and see if the problem disappears.
Screen Sharing has a checkered histroy looking back through the posts..

There are many discussions about failing after changes in Lion.. I haven't seen the equivalent ML yet.. the TC may not be root cause, just the initiator of the problem.
It could be the BTMM associated with the TC.

  • How can I create RAID 1 on Mac mini server just now from box.

I bought my Mac mini server two days ago and decided that 1Tb + 1Tb HDD are very good for RAID 1 (mirroring).
Thinking - doing ... Open Disk Utility, try to change and create RAID. Nothing. Try to reinstall OS X - recovery part are on disk all time.
Does anybody can help me to create what I want and how to do this with minimum energy. Thanks a lot.

Start from an Internet Recovery which boots you into it's own Recovery Partition. From there use Disk Utility to put your 2 drives into RAID 1. Reinstall OS X from the Internet Recovery once you have done that and install everything else as you need to.
Be aware that RAID volumes do not have their own Recovery Partition so you will need to either have an external drive with an RP to boot into else you will need to use Internet Recovery each time (which is around a 650MB download).

  • Finder: connecting iMac to Mac Mini server

    Hello,
When I connect in the Finder to the Mac Mini Server (Snow Leopard Server), it takes on our iMac Snow Leopard 90 seconds on a fixed 1 Gbps network.
Why does it take so long ?
Connecting our iMac with Leopard takes only a few seconds.
    Thanks,
    Hubert

    Yes.
I just tried to connect in the finder to a Windows XP Pro PC. Before I could look at my watch, I had access to the Windows XP filesystem.
I tried it also with my MacBook to connect to the server in the finder. Here too, it takes only a few seconds.
I do not understand why it takes 90 seconds on the Snow Leopard iMac.

  • I'm unable to connect to my mac mini server remotely since the upgrade to OSX 10.8.5. I was able to connect without problem (from an Ipad and a Mac Pro workstation)before the upgrade which I applied last week.

I installed an update to OSX 10.8.5 last week. I've been unable to use Remote Desktop VNC from my Mac Pro working station or use Mocha Vnc Lite from my Ipad to gain access to my mac mini server since I applied the update. Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi David,
thank you. I tried all the steps and the thing different is that now with my usual user the CC app crashes silently, but Photoshop and Illustrator generate a crash report with this message:
    /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CC/Adobe Photoshop CC.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/amtlib.framework/Versions/A/amtlib
    abort() called
    terminate called throwing an exception
With the Adobe user it runs with no problems, I even tried to do a "diff" of running user processes between the two users and remove all launchers and extensions but it's still the same.
I am a developer so I use XCode and other "dotfiles" and dirs within my home directory, I'm also using Ruby/RVM, NodeJS and some other. Can some of this stuff cause conflicts?
    Thank you
    Vito

  • Can't log new user onto Mac Mini Server

I can't log a new user into Mac Mini server.  Have added the user to the Workgroup Manager, and am now trying to use the password created there for log-in on user computer. Any advice?

Do you have Server Access Control Lists (SACLs) configured?  If so, you will need to add this new user to the appropriate SACLs before it can connect.  As an example, when I create new users, I need to add them to the File Sharing SACL or they never see any available shares on the server.

  • Please Help--10.4.6 is killing my Mac Mini

Please help. I am new to Mac.
I have a Mac Mini G4. I installed through Software Update 10.4.6. Partway through through the installation process, the system said there was an error, that the package was moved to the trash and that I should try re-installing. So, I did. And the same thing happened again. I tried re-booting the computer. In "About This Mac" it says that I have 10.4.6. But now, everything is messed up. I can't mount any disk images on the desktop (I checked, and .dmg files are associated with the right application). I can't even install any software. Someone had posted an ftp that had 10.4.6 as a .sit file rather than a .dmg. However, when I downloaded it and tried to run the installation package, partway through, it stopped saying, "There were errors during installation. Please try installing again later." I tried to "Archive and Install" from the Tiger DVD (10.4.0), and, early on in the installation, it gave me the same "error" message. I tried to repair disk permission (I hadn't done than before downloading the update), but it just hangs there (how long is it supposed to take anyway). Moreover, Mail won't launch and while Safari launches, it crashes. Firefox works. Please, please help me. I don't understand what's going on.
    Mac Mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thank God, everything is OK, again.
I posted my question on two forums, “Using Mac OS X Tiger” and “Installation & Setup” because I wasn’t sure which one to go to, and received useful information from everyone involved.
I want to profusely thank everyone who helped, not least Dr. Smoke and his extremely useful Web site: www.thexlab.com
    Here’s what I did:
First, I tried to Repair Disk from the Tiger install DVD. The repair failed, gave me the following error:
    “Invalid volume free block count
should be 15966423 instead of 15966422
Error: underlying task reported failure on exist
    1HFS Volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on Volume 1
    Could not be repaired”
In looking through Dr. Smoke’s site, I saw that it said that third party applications like Disk Warrior might be able to help. It reminded me that my friend made me get that program when he sold me his Mini (sorry I didn’t mention it earlier). I booted from the Disk Warrior CD and told it to repair the disk. And guess what: it actually worked!
While I still had the same problems: could not mount disk images, etc. I was at least able to do an Archive Install of 10.4 (I followed all the specific instructions as outlined). And that worked, too. Now, everything is working again!
I updated to 10.4.5 (I figured that was the last one working OK, so go with what works. I am sure 10.4.6 is fine, but as the xlab Web site notes, “Before installing software updates, you should decide if "now" is the right time.” And, frankly, after what I have been through, “now” is certainly not the right time.
One last question: all the applications seem to be working just fine. How do I delete the “Previous Systems” folder? Where is it located? Is the procedure the same as the one outlined in this document, “Mac OS X 10.2: How to Delete a Previous Systems Folder” (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25461) or is it different for 10.4?
Again, thank you so very, very much for your help. I really appreciated it.
    Best,
    Amir

  • Lately my finder closes when I select a shared devices and I can no longer connect to other macs.  Wifi working, TC okay except in finder. Mac Pro running 10.8.5

Lately my finder has been closing when I select a shared device such as another mac, a printer, or the time capsule.   My WiFi connection is working - I can can still backup to the TC and use my wireless printer, but I just can't access them by clicking on them in the finder window.   Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    Thanks for your help
I made no changes to the mini or the server.
The router was shut down then on restart the new (replaced modem) was configured by using another mac on the network (not the file server)
Once the router and modem were online again, other macs running 9.2 were accessing the file server as usual. The mini was not.
I had been working on a file that resides on the server. I was not warned that the router was going to be shut down. When I saved the file I got the beach ball then error message.
It'll be next week before I'm in the office agin. I'll report back then. Thanks

When you say "when I click connect" what are you clicking on?
What happens if you press command + K and in the connect to server window enter the server's IP address?

  • Please help i could not open my iphoto, mac mini

when click on the icon Iphoto, and could not open..

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • Can I install Snow Leopard on Mac Mini Server hardware?

What I would like to do is buy the Mac Mini Server but I don't need the server OS. I want the desktop OS on the Mac Mini Server. Will installing Snow Leopard on the server hardware be just like installing it on a regular Mac Mini?
Or should I just wait and see how Lion shakes out?

Thanks Indy, I already had proceeded the installation according your tip. Just an objection related to the updates: I was able to install the OS updates only while in target mode, as when I made 2 attempts to update the version 10.6.6 to the current one (10.6.7 - the combo one and the MBP version too) it was not permitted. I had to plug the FW cable into the MBP again and update the Mini's OS (using the special MBP version of 10.6.7) in target disc mode. I want to use the Mini as a media server and intend to install Windows 7 on the other HD which now hosts the server OS. However, according to one poster (Sven G) there are some problems (I don't know exactly what they are) related to Boot Camp software. Have you any information about these problems?
I have maintained both OS (standard and server) living side by side on the Mini, is there any problem with that?
Again many thanks, you were succinct, right to the point, and your tip just proved itself correct.
    Cheers
    Marola

  • Can't Connect to Mac Mini Server 10.8

I want to use Screen Sharing to run a headless Mac Mini Server (late 2012) running Server.app under Mountain Lion.
From my Mac Mini I can connect to my iMac on the same LAN and use Screen Sharing, but I can't do the opposite, which is what I need to do. This is very frustrating because the support for this key feature is just plain awful.
Yes, screen sharing is checked under File Sharing preferences on the Mac Mini Server. And yes, both the display and the computer are set to never sleep on the Mac Mini Server.
What must I do to connect to my Mac Mini Server from my iMac so I can run the Mac Mini Server headless?
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

"Screen Sharing is currently being controlled by the Remote Management Service"
I've been fidgeting between the Server.app server Settings tab and the Screen Sharing checkbox in System Preferences Sharing pane all day.
I had tried "Share Screen" via Finder. After I tried "Share Screen" via Server.app from my client computer I noticed the above warning message when Screen Sharing in the server's System Preference Sharing pane was highlighted. I'm not sure which is cause or effect.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the server. Only "FIle Sharing," "Remote Login" and "Remote Management" are checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the server.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the client. In this case, "Allow remote administration using Server" is checked and grayed out. "Screen Sharing" is checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the client. (It may not have anything to do with a successful screen share connection, but it is on.)
Everything is now working better than expected. Thanks to you both for your help!
