Please help!!! Cannot run Windows Update in Win 7 Pro after changing new hard-drive. (X201s)

Hi everyone,
I have been using my thinkpad x201s for more than one year by now. And recently I change a new and larger hard drive for my laptop. When I tried the thinkpad rescue and recovery disc on the new hard drive, everything works fine except that I cannot run Windows Updates after the installation was finished.  The recovery DVDs were burned directly from the original image stored in the computer when the first I received my laptop last year.
Every time when I try to run the Windows Update, it shows the following: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running, you may need to restart your computer."
I restarted my computer later but nothing changed. Can't run Windows Updates and can't even install IE9.
I then moved back to my old hard drive and everything is normal, no problem with Windows Updates. I also tried to create a back-up image by running win 7 Backups and Restore. Later when I changed back to the new drive and followed the instructions to restore my system from the image I created earlier in a USB drive, it worked except that still the system can't run Windows Updates program.
I'm now getting very confused and upset, is it something to do with the software copyright? It's been a week now and I tried to Google the similar problem but no solutions work here. All I want to do is moving my current system to the new hard drive so that I can continue to use my laptop but it just failed updating every time.
Could anyone kindly tell me what to do when changing hard drive in order to avoid the problem I'm dealing with? Sorry I'm not a pro type user and just want my laptop to work appropriately.
My warranty has already expired so I guess the Lenovo Technical Hotline wouldn't answer my questions anymore. Please help!! Much appreciated.
Thanks so much in advance!!

I'm not sure this is the issue, but from your description, it seems as though all you have to do is activate the windows update service. If I were you, I'd search for "Services" in the start menu, open it and look for "Windows Update". Check in its properties that it is set to "Automatic (Delayed)", if it isn't, set it, and start the service, you should then be able to check for updates, be careful though that none of your other programs aren't stopping the service, usually these programs are there to "optimize your performance" or "boost your system",...
Hope this helps.

  • Windows 7 won't load after installing new Hard Drive and Recovery software

I guess a virus crashed my hard drive so I bought a new one.  I installed the new drive and loaded the recovery disks that I also bought from HP.  Apparently Windows didn't load properly and it keeps telling me to RELOAD WINDOWS.  I've tried starting over from Disk 1 but it's not doing anything different to fix it.
I removed the new hard drive and reinstalled it but it's still doing the same thing.
What am I doing wrong and HOW DO I FIX IT?

    Hi,
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around if you have ( or can borrow ) a retail Windows 7 installation disc that is exactly the same version as your OEM installation - ie if your notebook came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit this is the exact retail version you would need.
If you don't have access to a retail disc, you can create an installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

Any additional drivers you may need can be found Here.

Please help me! My MacBook was stolen along with an external hard drive that had all my photos of my children on them. I hadn't backed to iCloud or backed anywhere else. I am distraught. No find my mac either...help...please... Some programmes are still running like drop of and Skype... Is it all over?!?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Replaced NIC and cannot run Windows update

Greetings - I disabled the onboard NIC and installed a Intel Gigabit CT PCI-E Network Adapter EXPI9301CTBLK. On reboot, Win7 found the NIC and everything appeared to function normally.
However, when I try to run Windows Update or update Windows Defender, which worked the previous day, I get the error code: 0x80248007.
I updated the NIC driver to Driver_Version: Driver ver 12.7.27.0 date: 5/15/2013 - No help.
I ran the fixit tool from - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958046/en-us - No help.
I renamed the folder SoftwareDistribution/Download folder to Download.old - No help.
I asked Intel Support if they were aware of this - They suggested contacting Microsoft.
    OS: Win7 Pro 64bit
I suspect the NIC is causing the the problem obviously and hate to remove the NIC.  Anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve this?
    Thank you

    Hi,
According to the error code, this problem occurs when some files in the Windows Update are missing, or when the Microsoft Software License Terms cannot be located by Windows Update.
Microsoft already provide a fixit tool to fix this problem and you can refer to the link below to download and intall it to fix this problem for test.

  • Playlists Missing After Install New Hard Drive and Upgrade to Win 7

My computer needed a new hard drive and I upgraded from Win Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.
I am trying to get my Playlists back for my iTunes in my "Administrator" user account, after reinstalling iTunes and putting my music libraries back onto my computer.
(I had installed 32-bit Win7 OS myself, computer worked OK for about 1 day, then would not boot up; I took computer to shop, they said I needed new Hard Drive, and I gave them my new Win7 OS computer disks)
I am confused over whether I have 32-bit OS or 64-bit OS. They recommended installing 32-bit OS, I agreed, and believed that I had 32-bit OS installed; however, Computer / System Properties state "System type: 64-bit Operating System"
Prior to my installing Win7, I backed up the following onto my Western Digital "My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive:"
("My Administrative Account"): Users / Owner / My Music
    and
("My User Account"): Users / Yank / My Music
My "Administrative" and "User" user accounts contain different songs in iTunes.
If helpful, I could describe what is in each of these 2 backed-up music folders.
To get started, I copied both my "Owner" and "Yank" user folders in the C: User folder; however now I have "Owner," "Yank," and "Yank.Owner-Toshiba" folders in the C: User folder. I think I did this by creating a new Yank user account by creating a new account, not by my copying a folder into C: User folder. The Owner folder has a picture of a lock on the folder icon.
Because I had trouble merging My Music folders in the Owner folder, and I was confused, I copied everything that was in the Owner folder into a new folder in the Owner folder, "NEW OWNER FOLDER." I also copied my Owner Music folder into several places in my Users / Owner folder.
I also ended up changing the "iTunes Media folder location" several times, using iTunes "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / change "iTunes Media folder location". When I chose "Reset," it shows "C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media"
I've also played around with "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' "
When I open my iTunes, I have no playlists.
However, when I went to my "Yank" user account and opened iTunes for the first time, the playlists associated with that account were visible.
How do I get my playlists back on my Administrative Account, which is my main song collection and had many, many playlists?
    Thank you.

    YAY!
I didn't try shift-start of iTunes, but I DID GET MY PLAYLISTS BACK BY FOLLOWING YOUR OTHER ADVICE:
I went to my external hard drive, went to my backup at Users / Owner / My Music / iTunes / and searched for library.itl
Four files with that name were found, with different dates.
I chose the most recent, dated just a few days before I made my backup to the external hard drive.
I copied it to my computer's hard drive into the following location:
    C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes
which overwrote the file which was located there.
When I opened iTunes, ALL MY WONDERFUL PLAYLISTS WERE THERE!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SOLVING THIS FOR ME!
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW DISAPPOINTED I FELT WHEN I BELIEVED THAT I HAD LOST ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS WHICH I HAD CREATED OVER THE YEARS? Many of my playlists were composed of whole albums whose songs I had added to iTunes.
    THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH!

  • Windows 7 Enterprise is not genuine after installing new hard-drive and cloning the old one

I retired from my job as a university professor two years ago, and they let me keep my laptop computer, which is a Dell Latitude E4300 with Windows 7 Enterprise installed. I do not have any of the original disks for Windows. Recently, the hard-drive began
to fail, so I replaced it with a new one, cloning the old hard-drive onto the new one. Soon after that, a popup window began appearing saying that this computer is not running genuine windows. One important consequence of this is that I can no longer use Windows
Update, so I have concerns about security. If I go to the control panel under “System”, it says windows is activated and gives me the Product ID. I have talked to tech support at Microsoft, and they tell me something along the lines of the following: that
the problem is the new hard-drive is not recognized as being licensed to use this copy of Windows, and that I should post a question on one of the forums asking this: How can I reinstall Windows 7 Enterprise on the new hard-drive? Any assistance will be much
    appreciated.
PS I have no idea which forum this should go under, so pretty much just picked one randomly.

  • Upgrading hard drive... need help on how to prepare current CS6 for reinstall on new hard drive

I'm about to upgrade my hard drive to a larger one and will need to reinstall my CS6 Web/Design Suite... I've seen many people having issues with activation and licensing after they reformat their computers or buy a new one and try to install the programs on the new "system". How should I go about preparing my Adobe software on the current hard drive so I won't have any issues resintalling on the new hard drive? I will be installing CS6 Student/Teacher version on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit...
    Thanks for the help!

    Thanks!
I wondered if that was all I needed, but when I built my new system and installed PS CS4 I kept getting errors. So, I went back to the old system and deactivated it and still got errors. Uninstalled it deactivated and still got errors on the new system. When I talked to Adobe they just kept telling me the key was invalid (even though I had been running that same program and key for the last 4 years without problems lol) and it was not a burnt copy or pirated. I had the orginal box with the original DVD case and serial number on the case... A friend of mine had upgraded their rig and went to a Suite so he gave me his CS4. But, needless to say (as it is said all over these forums apparently) Adobe was of no help at all so I had to buy a new version. I'm not looking to go through all of that BS again, haha.
So as long as I deactivate the Suite (or do I need to deactivate each program separately?) I should be able to reformat (or upgrade hard drives) and reinstall CS6 as many times as I want? (I usually do a reformat like once a year to keep my computers clean and free of junk that may have been downloaded by other household members...)

  • IPhoto update after installing new hard drive

    Hi
I've just had a new hard drive installed & Lion (10.7.5) reinstalled. However, when opening iPhoto it says I need to check with developer to make sure iPhoto (8.1.2) works with this version of OS X - It says reinstall app or install updates?
I unfortunately cant reinstall app alone as I only have the entire Lion in my App Store & this has already been installed... ?
I have since downloaded the latest update (9.4.3) which then said I needed (9.1) which then said I needed (9.0)... ? But 9.0 doesnt exist?
Bit confused by all this as I had been using both the OS & version of iPhoto without any problem prior...
    Any guidance please...
    Thanks!

If you have a RevB model B&W, you have the option of simply adding another drive, thus ending up with two hard drives.
To identify the model you have just open the case and look at the IDE controller chip. See section 3 on this page:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3-ZONE/yosemite/newfeatures.html
If you do not have a Rev B, or you really do want to replace the hard drive. this is what I would do.
    1. Remove the existing drive and install the new one in its place. Make sure the jumper on the new drive is set the same way as the jumper on the one you are replacing, viz. as "master" or "cable select". The settings for the drive jumper are shown in a diagram on the drive.
    2. Boot from your OS 9 CD, open Disk Utilities folder and run Drive Setup.
    3. Select the drive and ask DS to initialize and partition. As an example, you could partition a 60 gB drive into a 20 gB volume for OS 9 stuff and the rest for OS X.
    4. Install OS 9 in the volume you created for it.
    5. Restart the computer to verify OS is working.
    6. Install OS X on the other partition.
Once the drive is partitioned and both OS are installed, you can install or copy other stuff to either partition.
    Good luck.

  • Windows setup error after installing new hard drive

My hard drive failed. After installing the new hard drive and running the recovery disks, I get an error that says windows setup could not configure windows to run on this hardware. The new HD is basically the same as the one originally in my HP Touchsmart
    600-1155 PC.

    Hi Hpygram,
Please share more details about this issue.
    1. What option did you choose when you use the recovery disks?
    2. Did you perform the clean installation?
If you meet this error message when you  perform the clean installation, please refer to the following KB for more details.
“Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware” installation error on a Windows 7-based or a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2466753
    • Check if the hard drive you are installing to is an "Advanced Format" disk.
    • Check your setuperr.log and setupact.log to see if the error are related to your drivers.

  • Help! Still get error message after installing new hard drive

The original problem is below and thought that it would help to include it to see the initial problem.
I went out and bought a new hard drive (500gb) and installed it in my laptop.  I went to use the restore disks and I got the same exact error mentioned below.  I used a set of disks that I copied from the original recovery disk and it still did the same.  What is the error code and how can I fix this!!
    Please help!!
I have a Satellite A215-S7444 laptop and everytime I go to restore the drive to it's factory settings using the Toshiba recovery wizard I get the following error:  ERROR: 03-EEEE-000, AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED, PRESS [OK] TO TURN OFF COMPUTER.
Just a note, I have used my recovery disks to restore the factory settings before with no problems at all, now I get this message.  All the files are accesible on the CD and I have no virus' on my computer.
Lastly, the image part of the drive (The one that is like 1.5 gb) which is usually visible is not any more and has not been for a bit when you should see it when you open "My computer".  You can however see it when I go to "Administrative Tools-Computer Management."  It states that the drive is Healthy (EISA Configuration), type is basic, and there is no file system associated with the drive and there is no drive letter for it either.

Thanks for your quick reply!  I was wondering if anyone would reply!
I made the copies on a suggetion that the original may be scratched or something so I figured what the heck?  I did format the hard drive though.  It is a Seagate 500gb hard drive.  I only formatted the whole drive and figured that the restore disks would make the additional partition.
Aside from that, it's the same error message that I had on the original drive.  The original drive and OS works (Vista), but I wanted to restore it because I just wanted to wipe everything and start clean.  What can be causing the error message, and what IS the error message?
Anymore suggestions or help would be great as I am in desperate need of getting my computer back to working.
    Thanks again for replying!

  • HELP!!! CAN'T RESTORE OLD CATALOG TO NEW HARD DRIVE

    July 12, 2010
    Hello,
Thank you for any help you can give with this rather desperate problem.
I have installed a replacement hard drive in my Dell Windows Vista laptop and reloaded Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0.  I am unable to reconnect Elements with my old photo organizer catalog.
Thus the system says I have Elements installed, with a catalog with zero photos in it. When in fact I have 12,000 fotos all captioned, dated and tagged for the Elements organizer.
Elements HELP has nothing about reconnecting to an old photo catalog.
Is it possible (???) that Elements does not keep the catalog separate from the program itself – so that when the program itself is lost in the switch to a new hard drive, the catalog is also lost (unless the user made a backup somewhere)?
    Anyway, here’s what happened:
I had made a fairly recent backup of the catalog to an external hard drive, so I copied that backup onto my new hard drive. Then in the Elements Organizer, I clicked on File; Restore Catalog from CD, DVD or Hard Drive. In the window that popped up, I directed it to the backup file (Backup.tly) and specified a location for restoring files and catalog. Then I clicked on Restore.
Up came a window that named one of my 12,000 fotos and said these approximate words “File already exists, do you want to overwrite it?”. I finally said Yes, and then it went on to another of my 12,000 fotos and asked the same question. I assume it planned to go through all 12,000 fotos, but I can’t imagine why.
But instead of continuing, I then got a window that said, “Error encountered while restoring catalog. It is recommended that you contact your disc drive manufacturer and upgrade to the latest available firmware for your specific disc drive before trying again.” (By the way, all my other programs are working fine on the new hard drive.)
I sure hope someone out there can tell me what’s going on. Thank you so much.
    Don

You copied the backup onto your new hard drive? Yes or no? Where was it before?
Then did you try to restore to the exact same location where you placed the copy?
HEre is the proper way to restore a catalog: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402894.html
By the way ... you say: "Elements HELP has nothing about  reconnecting to an old photo catalog." I disagree.
You say: "Is it possible (???) that Elements does  not keep the catalog separate from the program itself" not only is it possible, but Elements does indeed keep the catalog separate from the program itself.

  • Mac Book Pro 15" mid 2009 after installing new hard drive and 8 gb memory, start up disk is still full, start up from power off is very slow, and programs open immediately after start up EX. word, excel.  Help?

I installed a new 1tb WD hardrive in my mid 2009 macbook pro along with upgrading from 4gb to 8 gb.
My start up disk is still almost full, booting up is extremely slow, and programs open up by themselves once booted up ex:word, excel.
New TB drive shows up alng with 8 GB but, new hard drive not updating somehere?  What am I missing?  See screenshots below

Thanks for the response, but I'm looking for answers to a few of the other answers before I look at completeing the steps above.
    1.  Whyis the new TB drive recognized in image 1 but still have the original 256GB size still recognized(and almost full) in image 1 also?  The HD should now be 1 TB, not 256 correct?  If this were the case, the HD, would only be fraction of full capacity,  Where is the disconnect between reconizing the installed tb HD but, it not being used?
2.Image Number 2 shows once again that the new tb internal HD is recognized.  However, in image 3, the HD 256GB drive is still shown underneath the new HD.  Does this show that I am misssing something, some step, related to confirming the new HD should be fully reconized instaed of this old 256 that still remains?
    3.  In image 4, the SATA heading, shows the TB hardrive,  However, in image 5, the 256GB drive is still being shown under the storage heading?  Once again, seems like I've missed some simple step to make this all the same?
4.Why is the start up from boot up soooo slow now.  I was never even close to this slow(slower than PC startup slow) before the new HD was installed.  IS this common when updraging to a new HD?  Doesn't seem right?
    5.  Why now all of a sudden when the computer finally boots up are certain programs automatically opening up, word, excel, when they have never opened up like this before?
Summary:  1. New memory issues, 2. Very slow start up, 3.  Programs opening up automatically at startup.
Until I address these issues, I'm not going to worry about loking through and deleting heavy folders.
    All responses welcomed!

  • Need help for installing OS after installing new hard drive

    I have an imac 27 2010.
The hard drive has failed for the 2nd time. I have installed a new hard drive again. When trying to install the OS, it looks to begin but then tells me it can not be completed.
I had gone the the erase, then partition steps previously.
    Any advice?
I do have a time machine copy to restore from if I can get that far as well as the discs handy to use.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which OS version install disk do you have? It's not Mavericks since that does not come with a disk.
And you are trying to install Mavericks? If so, are you using the Internet Recovery Option (press Command + Option + R while restarting/rebooting)? I recently read of a case where the user was unable to reinstall the old OS (in that case Snow leopard) and he could not install Mavericks either. He took it to an Apple store and they bypassed the ID/password requirements and reinstalled it for him.

  • How to run Windows update for Win XP SP3 using Firefox

My desktop PC is running windows XP with SP3. My spouse uses IE 8 for her browser. I use Firefox Version 24. for my browser. Previously, whenever we ran MS or Windows update it starts IE and runs fine. IE 8 has blown up and no longer works (Runtime Errors). I tried to go to the Windows update website using Firefox and it came back and told me that I had to use IE to run Win update on an XP system. Is this true? I don't want to use IE at all. Is there a way to use Firefox to run Windows or MS update on my Win XP system? Thank you.

Thanks for your help. That is not what I wanted to hear so I will have to try to get IE 8 working again. How do other folks do updates? Does this mean that IE is absolutely necessary to maintain your windows system? Is this true for the newer versions of Windows, 7 or 8?
