Please help, deleted Sparse Bundle!!!

So I have done the worst thing and accidentally deleted my Time Machine Sparsebundle, I have since done an erase and install, and I have no way of getting the bundle back. I can see that my fils are still on my TC, as it shows that I have 434.63GB available on a 1TB hard drive.
My question is; is there a way to access my files again without the sparsebundle or is there a dummies guide to making a new sparsebundle to access my files. I hav tried using TM to backup and see if it merges new with old backups, but it won't. I have years of important data I am trying to recover, any help is good help.

You are well past the point of no return if I understand you..

Why would you erase after having deleted the sparsebundle?
Perhaps you don't mean erase.. you mean reset.. an erase would cause all the content of the TC to be lost.
My question is; is there a way to access my files again without the sparsebundle
No, the sparsebundle is essential to TM.. the files are stored in a special format not accessible to anything but TM.
You have one hope.. open the TC and remove the hard disk. Put it in a USB to sata holder. and plug into a computer.
You will need to buy a utility like disk warrior or data rescue and attempt to recover or rename the sparsebundle or at least extract the backup folder from inside the sparsebundle. If it works it will be immediately obvious. Otherwise the backup I doubt can be recovered.. even if you do the full recover, it cannot put the files back together.
If you have no idea what you are doing.. you might be better simply paying for it to be done. Send the disk to a data recovery centre.. it will cost a mint but if the files have to be recovered you have no choice.

• How to delete sparse bundle on TC?

I ran out of room on my 1TB TC, so got a new 3TB TC and have set it up for Time Machine. I want to delete all files on the 1TB TC and use it only as an auxiliary hard drive. I can't seem to delete the Sparse Bundle file. How do I delete the sparse bundle file on my old TC?

Solved the problem! after a hint by 'nick_harambee', dated Feb 21, 2009 (see at the bottom of: https://discussions.apple.com/message/9036656#9036656) in which he suggested to enable 'guest access' in the Airport Utility tab on the Time Machine..!
Instead of all failed attempts to change the permissions with 'chflags' (for which you don't have the permission ;-)..
So, now the whole -unneeded- sparse.bundle can be erased and Time Capsule disk space recovered..
Thanks 'nick_harambee'! for the simple hint,

• Deleting Sparse Bundle File

I'm running out of disk space on my Mac Book Air. I have used 'What Size' and it shows me that I have 36gb of data as sparse bundle file.
I have read online that various users has encountered problems after deleting sparse file to make space available.
Is it recommended to delete those files or am I asking for trouble?
Thanks

The sparse bundle you found in WhatSize is indeed a FileVault Home, and the fact that it is currently in /Users/.nelsonesparon (with a leading period) rather than in /Users/nelsonesparon (without the leading period) indicates that you are currently logged into that very account. All the files and folders that currently appear to be in your "Home Folder" - your Documents, Music, Movies, etc - are actually stored in the "bands" of that sparse bundle.
Bottom line - Don't touch it!
But if the sparse bundle containing all your "Home" files is 36GB, and you are "running out of disk space", what accounts for the rest of your HD space? How big is the HD? Do you have other user accounts? Does the space used by files and folders as shown in WhatSize "add up" to the Used space on the HD?

• PLEASE HELP - deleted sms

Hi,
I desperately need help, or a phone number to bb so they can help me! My bb smartphone 8110 keeps deleting my sms messages on it's own. It's really annoying, and I've checked the validity period - it's on max, so I cannot find any reason for why it keeps deleting everything. Please help, as I have lost some messages that I wanted to keep. It's the second time this week it's deleted my messages!!!
Eva

If you don't already have a memory chip, then thats the reason.
Blackberrys cant hold alot of memory so when it gets too full it will start deleting text, email, anything that it thinks is unncessary.
If you DO have a memory chip then I dont know whats wrong.
You could try and take it to the alltel store.

• Please help - deleted my MUSIC!!

Let me see if I can explain this right. I had an Ipod Shuffle.... and I just got a new Ipod video.
My son asked me to get him a song for the shuffle I gave to him, so I bought a song on Ittunes... for the shuffle.
It asked me if I wanted the songs to replace the others and I hit yes..and EVERYTHING IS GONE!!
SO>>> the next time I plug in my Ipod, and I going to lose all my purchased songs??
Any way I can get these songs back?
I just got them... and I dont want to lose them!
Catrin

I did the same exact thing yesterday. I was able to recover all of my songs including the purchased songs but I can't get the purchased songs to download to my iPOD (the good thing is they are back on my computer and I can listen to them there).
If you have anything on there that you burned you can get everything off your C:Drive and back into your iTunes library. From iTunes, you will go to file, add folder to library, highlight your 'iTunes Music'folder (your folder should be under My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music)
To get your purchased songs back, access the music store. Go to Advanced at the top of the page and check for purchases. Everything you have ever purchased should show up and then you will hit the 'download' button.
After all of my music was downloaded again, the first time I tried to access a purchased song it asked me for my iTunes password. Once I typed that in and hit ok, i was able to listen to all purchased songs.
Now, if you can figure out how to get them back on the iPod, let me know! Don't ever hit 'yes' when you are asked that question again because it will erase everything again. I was asked the question today at one point and I hit No and then Don't ask again just in case I have a memory lapse!
I hope this helps~

Just create a HGroup for each RichEditableText that also contains the "x". Then add a click handler to the x that does something like removeElement(hGroup1)
Where hGroup1 is the HGroup that contains the RochEditableText and the x.

• Is there any way to recover a deleted sparse bundle?

I had an old sparsebundle (380GB) saved onto an external drive.
I wanted to keep this old sparsebundle,
but when I went to run a new Time Machine backup to this external drive it deleted the old sparsebundle.
Is there any way to recover this deleted sparsebundle.
As I began to run the new Time Machine backup, it changed the name of the old sparsebundle
from xxxxx.sparsebundle
to xxxx.purgeable
then POOF it disappeared.
I cancelled the new Time Machine backup as soon as I saw the file extension change to .purgeable,
but even though the new Time Machine backup didn't seem to start (I cancelled it in time),
the old sparsebundle is gone.
I ran Data Rescue and all it could find is a file that is only a few KILObytes called xxxxx.in_process.
It would take a long time for the 380GB sparsebundle to be overwritten,
so I don't think that happened.
But can the old sparsebundle be recovered (and be usable)?

A sparsebundle is a disk image.. if the actual file info is wiped then I really doubt you can recover it. Since you ran a recovery software which has worked recovering stuff for me.. and it couldn't find it.. your only hope would be real data recovery centre.. but although they can get raw data off the disk how useful it would be is questionable.. sorry but I think it is gone.

• Deleting sparse bundle without deleting other data

Hey guys,
I've got a early 2011 Mac Pro running lion and a Time Capsule from 2011 also.
My time capsule is connected via Ethernet, and I can see the sparsebundle in Disk Utility (getting to that point was problem enough), and it all APPEARS to be working fine.
With this exception: when I attempt to backup I get an error message : the sparsebundle cannot be accessed error -01
My time machine hasn't backed up in about a year (because I kept putting off fixing this issue) so whatever that SB is, I don't need it anymore. I want to delete it.
BUT I have other items on the Time Mchine (that have just been click & dragged onto it, they have not been backed up onto it) that I don't want to get rid of.
A few questions.
If I delete the sparsebundle (in disk utility or otherwise) will it delete these other files? It's about 70gb worth and I don't want to move it all somewhere else to wipe the TIme Capsule then put it all back (kinda defeats the purpose of a Time Capsule).
And if it WON'T wipe the other files, how can I delete this annoying thing? And will it fix my error message? Will Time Capsule just create a new sparsebundle for the new backup?
ive googled, but i cant find this specific question anywhere else
Thanks!

• Safari won't open. Firefox disappeared, only question mark. Mail doesn't have content. Time Machine won't turn on because sparse bundle is in use. Please help.

I had this issue about a month in a half ago and it was fixed by a local technician. I no longer have access to him and I really need some help. The issues are as follows:
Safari will not open.
Firefox disappeared. No icon, just a question mark in it's place.
When I open mail it shows I have new messages but the content is blank.
Time Machine cannot turn on because sparse bundle is in use.
New files that were made are no longer available. It's almost as if the computer jumped back in time.

I'll assume that you have some way of connecting to this website from the affected machine. If not, ask for other instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to launch Safari. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

• Why won't my MacBook Pro backup to Time Machine (on my 1TB Time Capsule) when I'm running Lion OSX 10.7.5.? What does it mean when this error pops up: MacBook Pro.sparse bundle could not be assessed (error - 1).???? Please help me fix this!

Apparently I am not the only person having this problem as I have seen many threads about it. If ANYONE OUT THERE CAN HELP ME, I WOULD SINCERELY APPRECIATE IT.
I try and run my backup as I always have, but it HAS NEVER COMPLETED SINCE I UPGRADED TO LION. As many mentions, I updated from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 hoping that would fix my issue and it didn't help at all. I also unistalled WD SmartWare to no avail. It's really starting to annoy me since I have as much money invested in my MacBook Pro and Time Capsule as I do in my car....
I have more than enough space on the Time Capsule, but Time Machine is still failing and coming up with an error message: MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be assessed (error - 1).
Someone, anyone, please help!

. . . sparse bundle could not be accessed (error -1)

• Deleting Sparse Disk Image Bundle from Time Capsule

Howdy. Thanks in advance for help on this issue to anyone kind enough to spend time answering it.
I've got a 1TB Time Capsule which I use primarily for external file storage - it's currently got just about 120GB of files on it which I have manually copied there. I only sporadically use Time Machine to do automated backups, but since I've had the Time Capsule for a good long while, there have been many backups, and relatively little space left on it. As I am not interested in files that are 8 months old, I have gone into Time Machine and deleted all the old backups I don't want, then done a fresh backup so there's a current copy of everything on my laptop. It's my understanding that deleting backups from within Time Machine clears space off the Time Capsule, and when I did those deletions, saw that the available space on my Time Capsule did in fact increase, but not nearly as much as I would have expected.
Now, there's a file sitting on my Time Capsule called a "Sparse Disk Image Bundle.dmg", which has a filesize of 564GB - so there's where all the "free" space on my Time Capsule is accounted for.
My question is, if I know that I don't want the contents of all the old backups, but I DO want a copy of the files I have manually copied onto my Time Capsule, is it safe to delete the 564GB .dmg file? I use my Time Capsule more than anything else as the repository for my iTunes library, and it'd be a huge bummer if I wiped out my entire music collection by deleting that file.
So far as I can tell, the contents of my Time Capsule and that .dmg file are separate, but I don't know enough to know whether that's really the case.
Any advice is well appreciated!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Yes, network backups are in an odd container called a +sparse bundle.+ It should be named with your Computer name plus a string of 12 numbers and letters (the hardware address of your Mac).
Do you see your "other" files separate from it? They shouldn't be inside it, unless you specifically copied them into it.
As long as they're shown separately, yes, you can safely delete the sparse bundle. That will delete all your backups, though, and take quite a while. If it seems to be taking forever, see the blue box in #12 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
There is an alternative, however. You can limit the +maximum size+ of the sparse bundle, per #A8 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). As noted there, however, if you update to Snow Leopard, 10.6.3 or later, it will be automatically re-sized to the size of the TC's internal HD.
If it's already too large, you may need to delete some more backups and/or "compact" it first. See the pink box in #12 of the FAQ.

• Help! Empty home folder, vanished sparse bundle, and now I can't log in -

I was trying to free up space on my MacBook Pro and looking into the biggest space-eaters on my hard drive, and ran across something huge called a sparse bundle. I did some research, and at first thought this was a backup of my home folder, and with space so tight decided to delete it, figuring I'd backup externally later. Luckily it wouldn't empty from trash, and I pulled it back onto my desktop. I then learned that it was my own user home folder compressed into a sparse bundle by File Vault. (Yikes!) I tried to return it to my user folder but couldn't. I thought that maybe if I turned off File Vault it would work, so I tried. Instead my account logged out and I got an alarming message saying I couldn't log back onto this account due to an error.
I tried to access my account from the outside, as a root user, and saw to my shock that my home folder is now completely empty. The last I saw the sparse bundle was sitting on my desktop - where is it? Was it somehow deleted? If so, is there any way to recover it? I didn't make a backup, stupid me. I've seen other forum postings but they're not quite on point- Any help would be hugely appreciated!!!

I don't use File Vault, but have experimented with it a bit.
Are you on Tiger or Leopard? You've posted in the Leopard forum, but your signature says you're running Tiger.
The reason I ask is, I understand File Vault is handled somewhat differently on Tiger vs. Leopard; if you're really on Tiger, you might do better in the Tiger forum: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=758
But I suspect nobody in the forums will be able to answer this one -- it's quite unusual. You're probably going to have to either make an appointment at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store, or call AppleCare.
