Please help diagnose kernal pPanic
This happened twice today -once while running a save as tiff batch in photoshop and once afrer copying a non-copy protected DVD using Roxio Toast 8... the panic file was identical for both crashes.

Please help. Kernal panics
Hi all. Please help. I am on my second harddrive failure with the second one being diagnosed by apple genius as the MacBook Pro kept freezing. I have now fitted a new harddrive and also installed a fresh os to sort this out.
However just finished installing the os and I am getting the kernal panics.
I'm stuck with what to do next. Any tips ?Interval Since Last Panic Report: 5758 sec

IBook Possible Hard Drive Corruption - Please help diagnose
I left my iBook to download overnight and when I got up, it was really slow and laggy so I restarted it but it continually kept getting frozen at the last login screen, so I backed up my data via firewire, and erased the hard drive, and then installed OSX again. It worked for a bit, but then it crashed again, and between all these steps I have been repairing the hard drive using disk utility. It says that there is nothing wrong with the hard drive, but then it changes its mind after I've installed OSX again and it says there's a problem. Currently, the hard drive is blank, but it is coming up with a problem when I try and repair disk. The error that shows up is: "The underlying task reported failure on exist." as well as "Catalog file entry not found for extent."
I'm trying to diagnose the problem myself. I suspect that it is some form of hard drive failure. I don't want to take it in the shop because that will cost about $40 just to get it checked out, and I plan on installing a new hard drive myself if I find that that is the necessary step. If anyone has had similar problems, or knows what part needs to be replaced, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!
PS. If someone has some time and has more experience in diagnostics, please feel free to message me on msn at roycelee@hotmail dot comThis is the best way to Erase and Install. First backup all your important stuff, if you can, as the following will erase everything on your drive; it will be unrecoverable. Put your install disk in your Mac and Restart while holding down the C key. In Tiger, When you get to the install screen, don't click install and go to the title bar at the top of the screen and click on Utilities (in earlier OS's click on the installer menu).
Click on Disk Utility and choose the hard drive you want your OS on. Then click on the Erase tab. In Tiger, click on the Security Options button near the bottom (it's similiar for Panther and Jaguar).
Once in there choose Zero Out Data (write zero's in earlier versions). This will map out any bad blocks on your drive and bring it back to almost new condition (providing there's nothing wrong mechanically with it, bad bearings, defective or damaged surface, etc.).
Once this is done, go back to the install screen and begin the "Erase and Install" installation. This will put a factory fresh system on a clean hard drive.
Cheers!

Please help diagnose kernel panics
I'm having intermittent kernel panics on an Intel iMac (10.4.8). When they happen, it is always after a hotsync to a Palm Treo 680. I have never installed the Palm software, only MissingSync from MarkSpace. The sync looks like it's succeeded. MissingSync says it was fine, and the Treo has gone back to its normal hotsync screen. But just as that happens the panic occurs (sometimes). My guess is that it's when the Treo disconnects from the USB port. It's connected directly to a port on the back of the iMac. MarkSpace support had nothing obvious to suggest, other than uninstall, reset PRAM, repair disk, reinstall blah, blah. Can't see how this would help.
Anyone know if the Treo needs a USB driver as such, that would presumably be supplied by Macos or MissingSync? The panic report follows. Any pointers gratefully accepted!

As for the Treo I have no specific information on any incompatibilities with OS X when used with the proper software. If you use Missing Sync from MarkSpace just be sure you are using the most current version and that you don't also have Palm Desktop software installed as well. There is nothing specific in the panic.log file that points to The Missing Sync software directly, only that the panic was generated in one or more of the USB extensions.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics for more information.
I use Missing Sync with a Palm Tungsten E and it works fine on all my machines.
Do you use any other USB devices and/or USB hubs?
There are many possible causes of kernel panics. Corrupted device drivers and hardware defects are common causes. As I suggested before you would be wise to follow the suggestions given you by MarkSpace support. -
Kernel Panics on 10.6.8, please help diagnose
Greetings, everyone. I have a macbook, 10.6.8. I just started doing kernel panics last week. It also seems to be sluggish at times. I am a bit of a 'power user' with multiple tabs and programs going at all times, but the issues are recent. Removed the battery a couple of weeks ago, and had to reset the system clock because of errors. I don't know if this is related. Anyhow, I'm hoping someone can look at this log and help. My dissertation depends on it. O_O
Thank you for your time,

Please help diagnose a problem with Aperture
Hi all,
I've noticed recently that Apertures performance isn't what it should be so came on here looking for reasons why that might be the case. I saw one person suggest making a new account to see how Aperture runs and, as I'd just created an account for my GF I tried logging into her account and to my surprise Aperture was a speed demon!
I have managed to somewhat improve the performance of Aperture by basically removing every login item and running all the maintenance scripts using Onyx but one niggly little problem persists that I can't cure. Namely that of switching out of fullscreen mode. Initially Aperture on my account was dreadful when switching into AND out of fullscreen but now switching into fullscreen is almost instant while switching out of fullscreen I get a pause where I can see both the fullscreen image and the window, this pause lasts for around 5 - 10 seconds before my Mac Pro starts to respond again.
I've noticed that in my account Activity Monitor shows many more processes than under my gf's account but I have no idea which ones might adversely affect Aperture.
I suppose my other option is a wipe/reinstall of the OS but I really didn't want to go down that route tbh.
Any ideas?OK I've just added another 4Gb of RAM and that hasn't helped any either. I can however be a bit more specific about the problem.
As you know the problem only happens on my (Administrator) login, my newly created account (standard user) doesn't exhibit this nor does my girlfriends (also a standard user account). The problem is specific to switching OUT OF fullscreen mode. The problem also only rears its head when I switch to a new image, once I've gone into and out of fullscreen once with that image it doesn't do it again unless I switch my selection to a different image, it also does it if I switch to another image then back again.
To reiterate the problem is a long pause when switching out of fullscreen mode, it hangs kind of half in half out of fullscreen mode sometimes for up to 15 seconds.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. -
Please help diagnose iPod shuffle problem
Have a 1 GB iPod shuffle that is connected to an iMac G4 800 Mhz with 512 MB of RAM and running OS 10.3.9. I am having a problem that seems to be a common one. The iPod Shuffle simply won't mount. It doesn't show up on the desktop, doesn't run iTunes, doesn't show up in iTunes, and the iPod Software Updater keeps saying, "insert an iPod to update it", so it would appear the entire computer doesn't recognize it.
However, the iPod itself isn't bad, because when I plug it into a 12" PowerBook G4, it works fine. I have also managed to get the iPod Shuffle to work with the iMac under only one circumstance. If a wired keyboard is plugged in and the iPod Shuffle is plugges into one of the keyboard's USB ports, it works fine.
I have tried the following:
1. Complete update of every piece of software, including iTunes.
2. Permissions repair, then restart.
3. Unplugging all USB devices and plugging the shuffle into all three ports, one by one.
As I mentioned before, iPod Software Updater doesn't recognize the iPod. However, when I got a 12" PowerBook to recognize it, I ran the updater there, and it said the current firmware was up to date.
What else can I try?Brad,
How about a few questions right back at ya!
Does it work every time when you plug it into the wired keyboard or did that just happen once? Since you mentioned a "wired" keyboard can I assume you would rather use a wireless one?
Since the keyboard worked fine but plugging the Shuffle directly into the 3 USB ports does not, my guess would be that the design of the Shuffle or USB ports make it hard to seat the device completely - you said the light was on but no mount happens, this might mean that it's not seated completely. I don't own a Shuffle and I would guess Apple would not design the ports badly but this is my guess if the keyboard, which plugs into the very same USB ports, makes the Shuffle mount.
Good luck and I hope you get the Shuffle going soon! -

PB's Airport Extreme card not staying connected - please help diagnose
My thread Airport extremem card can't hang onto wifi signal - what to do? in the "Getting Online" forum hasn't generated a solution, so I'm trying here too.
In the past few weeks, my airport signal bounces around and randomly disconnects me. It goes from no signal (indicated) to 3 bars then bounces around. It occurred with my own Airport Extreme card (in the PB) and my Belkin router, and the library's wifi.
The problem may have started after an erase-and-install of Panther with an upgrade using the combo 10.3.9. The only security updates I see receipts or packages of are SecUpd2005-004Pan.pkg, SecUpd2007-002Pan.pkg, SecurityUpdate2004-10-27Pan.pkg.
The usual troubleshooting (Permissions, Chrons, Disk Warrior) didn't solve anything. Since first posting about this problem I've reapplied the 10.3.9 combo. I tried changing the channel on the router and setting it to Protected Mode.
"Protected Mode
NOTE: In most situations, best performance (throughput) is achieved with Protected Mode OFF. If you are operating in an environment with HEAVY 802.11b traffic or interference, best performance may be achieved with Protected Mode ON."
I then installed Airport 4.2 update because Software Updater presented it as an option.
Until today iStumbler and MacStumbler were showing 29-35% signal strength with no noise. As of today, iStumbler is showing intermittent noise of ~14-21%, but MacStumbler is not. (It was constant when I tried channel 9 and changing the router's back to 10 made it intermittent.)
The router is serving a desktop computer via ethernet so I can't move it. I have reset the router and cable modem several times with no improvement.
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do? Thanks.I would have come back to edit this, to say that the dropping signal problem came back since the 10.3.9 combo but I couldn't. The darn wifi signal was lost for something like 7 minutes.
The PB was sitting in exactly the same place and toggling airport on and off wouldn't reconnect it. It generated many lines in the console. Anyone know what this means?

HP DV7-1020US (Power supply/battery issues) Please help diagnose!
Hi everyone,
I've read a lot of forum information about power issues/problems with this model laptop.
But have finally decided to post this question up here for some real HP support.
The problems started with the battery not being able to hold a charge. Shortly after, my brick started making a strange beeping
noise. I purchased a matching brick. I was able to get a few good minutes of charge and then every time after the laptop wouldn't power-up
at all. I'd just get flashing lights on the front (HD, Lightning bolt, Power). The lights would stop blinking after resetting the battery. I did some
research on laptop batteries and found that not allowing it to drain and then be recharged could cause it to go bad.
I purchased and received my new battery in the mail today. I am currently in the process of charging the new battery but have noticed
that the little lightning bolt light in the front of the laptop is NOT lighting up as it should when it's charging.
Is it NOT lighting up because both the battery and brick are after-market products?
I am going to allow the laptop with the new battery and brick to charge for 16 hours without attempting to turn it on.
I'm concerned that the system board or internal power supply might be having problems as well.
Has anyone encountered these type of power issues with this particular laptop?
Should I be able to run the laptop without the battery? That option has not worked for me.
Any assistance/guidance from you pro's out there would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
JUST WANTED TO ADD:
Laptop has been charging with new brick and battery for 8 hours straight and now, the battery indicator light is blinking.
I've tried removing the battery and reseating it but as soon as I plug the power back into the laptop the blinking begins again.
Message Edited by pixelitis on 11-02-2009 10:56 PMHi people!
I started having the same problem with my 1020us. Battery isn't charging (it's 91% available, when the battery reaches 35% the laptop power-off). The battery led in front panel blinks too when laptop is plugged in to AC adapter).
Another problem with HP. I am so disappointed. =\ -

I installed Mackeeper to help with these issues but unfortunately, it seems that its part of the problem.
You don't have LS installed. The immediate culprits are the third party installations that installed these kext's.
com.zeobit.kext.Firewall 2.0.1
com.sophos.kext.sav 7.3.0
com.cisco.nke.ipsec 2.0.3
com.checkpoint.kext.P4MacFilterScheme 1.0
com.checkpoint.kext.FDECryptoco
So MacKeeper is always the first to go (com.zeobit.kext.Firewall).
Next sophos stuff.
Then the checkpoint stuff.
Finally the cisco stuff.
Booting in safe mode will suppress all this stuff that's quick way to see if one of these is the culprit. -
Help Diagnosing a Kernal Panic
Hi All,
Was hoping for some help diagnosing a kernal panic as it is slightly above my pay grade.
Some background, this 3,1 Mac Pro has been having repeated kernal panics for some time - it would start up, hang, and restart itself, sometimes 3 or 4 times before eventually being OK.
We had USB3 and ESATA cards installed, which we've tested and removed to try to rule them out - even with them uninstalled, the issue remains.
I was hopeful someone could translate this kernal panic and let me know what the issue is?

If the panic is recurrent, check that all are up to date, and if they are, uninstall them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, to see whether you can determine which is at fault. A conflict between modifications may be involved. Restart the computer and test after each uninstallation.

Al.The MBA seems to cause several problems to several users on boot ups
On start up my MBA would not boot up the apple logo came on but only a blank screen appeared no fan i followed several start up recommendations but to no avail so I took the MBA to the nearest Apple repair centre again the same symptoms on start up ......very sorry sir you need a new mother board that will be $500 not feeling confidant in the product declined and was going to put it on ebay for spares.
On return home I pressed the start up button and it started normally everything was working fine i decided to reinstall all the software what has caused the problem I have no idea but it is after several attempted reboots it finally started on its own so don't give up if you have this problem it may come to life -
Kernal Panic when updating. Please help
So I have 2 macs an old flat screen G$ and a new 24 screen intel Mac. My new one is fine but I wanted to update my old G4 I already had Mac OSX 10.4.05 on there but I wanted to use 10.4.7 so I could use the latest itunes. I don't have that one hooked up to the Net so I used my 10.7.4 start up disc to update it. However, it went through as normal then crashed giving me the Kernal Panic screen. Aside from a lot of numbers it came up with Panic CPU0 Unable to find driver for this platform. and ended in Panic were hanging here. It also told me to use the power button to restart, I tried this and it comes back to this screen. I can't get the disc out and can't get it to restart. I'd be happy to have the old OSX and have it working. What do I do??
Please Please Help!First, if the 10.4.7 disk is not a generic version, then it won't work. The one for your iMac will not install on any other machine. Second, to get the disk out, hold the mouse click down, until the disk pops out.
