Please help. export .wmv file via QuickTime Conversion

Use FCP HD 4.5 QuickTime Conversion to export a short movie which is about 2 mintues long. I only can get exported files in 30 seconds no matter I selected default format QuickTime Moive or Windows Media. Any thing I missed?
I cleaned all markers on TimeLine, but still same
(I am using Power Mac G5 with OS X 10.4.5).
thanks

It means your material is outside of 'safe' levels...luminance, chrominance or both.
Quick fix...apply Broadcast safe filter
Best fix...use Color Corrector 3-way.
You should also post a new thread with a new topic.

Have you done the obvious things to try to fix it: quit Quicktime then start it back up again, log out then back in, reboot.
Edit: Just read one of your later posts. If VLC won't play it, this is unrelated to Quicktime and Flip4Mac. Are you sure these wmv files are okay?

  • Anamorphic nightmares - exporting .wmv file

HI, I'm trying to export my DV Pal anamorphic 16:9 file to a .wmv file to be used in a Powerpoint Presentation. When I've exported the file through QT conversion / windows media, I can't get it to show the right proportions and with the black bars top and bottom.
Could you let me know what settings I need to choose for DV Pal to export this .wmv file?
I've also tried exporting it using compressor, but can't get it in the right proportions either. Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi, it works for part of the sequence but not all of it! Sighhh. In the nested sequence I'm highlighting the whole sequence and changing the aspect ratio like you say but it is only picking up part of it!
In the origingal sequence you can see the clips where it has changed it as it looks very stretched. Any idea how to get it to do the whole sequence?
I exported using .wmv and the section that was altered looks fine, so where nearly there.
Thanks for your persistence, I really appreciate it.

  • Can't play .wmv files in Quicktime 7?

I used to be able to play a library of .wmv files in Quicktime with no problems but all the sudden, I received an error message saying, "can't play this movie". They are only short 1-2 minute clips.
I successfully downloaded the most recent version of Quicktime from Apple's site but that didn't help.
    Can you help? Thanks, Samattjack

QuickTime has never even opened Windows Media Player formats without third party software help:
http://flip4mac.com is that software and any issues can only be resolved by them, not Apple.
    Not a Quicktime software issue.

  • Can't open WMV files in Quicktime since Snow Lep upgrade.....

I Can't open WMV files in Quicktime since Snow Leopard upgrade
I get an error message saying 'Quicktime player must be installed to run this application'
This is happening on both of my macs
    Any help appreciated

I had this problem. Double clicking the WMV file produced the message you had. However, if I open by dragging the WMV file onto the QuickTime X icon in the dock it did indeed open.
I then looked at the WMV's Get Info window and found that it was set to open in WMV Player by default. Obviously I do not have WMV Player installed. The drop down menu on this setting did have QT Player as the other option. When I changed the option to QT Player as default the "Change All" button became active. Previously it had been greyed out. Things have been OK since, but I have not tried it on any new WMV files.

  • Can't open WMV files in Quicktime. How can I reinstall Quicktime?

For some reason I am unable to open WMV files in Quicktime even though I have Flip4Mac Player Pro (WMV files played fine in Quicktime until recently).
ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Quicktime X is a great little piece of software. However, Quicktime X is very finicky on which codec/file format it can decode/play.
Luckily, there are DOZENS of alternative video/media players and extensions available for the Mac. Some of them are even FREE. Some of the better FREE ones include...
    PERIAN (quicktime extension)
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian
    QUICKTIME 7.6.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
    VLC Media Player
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/5758/vlc-media-player
    NICEPLAYER
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15136/niceplayer
... And if none of those work, there is a possibility that, that video file may be corrupted.

  • Playing wmv files in Quicktime Pro

I really want to play wmv files in quicktime. I read that quicktime pro should be able to do so. I have quicktime pro but nether Quicktime Player X or Quicktime 7 Pro can open it, and I know the file isn't corrupted cause it plays on a windows computer. Please help

You need to install Flip4Mac to play unprotected WMV files. WMV content which contains DRM can't be played in Mac OS X.

  • Can't open .wmv files in Quicktime after archive and reinstall of OS

After recently archiving/reinstalling OS, I can no longer open .wmv files in Quicktime. "The movie could not be opened". "The file is not a movie file" is the error. This applies to newly downloaded as well as previously downloaded and played files. Qtime version is 7.6.4. Changing extension to .mov doesn't work. Any assistance appreciated.

    Reinstall Flip4Mac.

No. To do so you need to install Flip4Mac WMV Player 2.4.4.2.

  • HT3775 can't play wmv file on quicktime?

I can't play .wmv files on quicktime.  I installed both QuickTime MPEG2 and Flip4Mac WMV hoping that this would solve the problem but it did not.  When trying to play any audio .wmv file I get an error box stating "the document (filename).wmv could not be opened.  The movie is not in a format the QuickTime Player understands.  You may need to install additional software to open this type of file".  Anyone know what I might need here?

Hmm, Perian should provide flv playback in Quicktime. Maybe you need to update Perian? I used to always use Perian but since upgrading to Lion I have not installed it and now rely on VLC for non-apple standard media playback. Deluxe can handle the flv-format.It will convert flv to mov. Hope it helps

  • Play WMV Files in Quicktime

    Hi,
I run Win XP & Surfari. I am trying to get away from running Media Player. I wish to play WMV files in Quicktime players. I do not wish to use a 3rd party player I just want to be able to open the WMV & it runs in Quicktime. I do not not want to go through the hassle of using another program to convert the file I just want to be able to run it in Quicktime. Is this now possible? I have read other posts in the Forum and nobody has answered this question directly they just say convert..... & that is a stupid answer & not satisfactory
    Many thanks in advance
    PS

Again, QuickTime for windows can't play .wmv or.wma, in this link look to the column on the right, Supported File Formats.

  • Help with converting WMV files to quicktime movies for video ipod.

Is there a way to convert my movies that play with the windows media player to a movie file that Quicktime Pro can use to export to my video ipod?
I am running windows xp, can anyone help??

File size is dicated by the bitrate of the file. From my review of (thousands) of WMV files there appears to be some compression in the WMV format that is not reapplied when save as to a MOV container is performed. You can see in get info the WMV file say 100MB has maybe 125-150MB of data when it is fully loaded in Quicktime.
Thus save as does not apply the WMV compression the same as native WMV is all I can assume and the new QT file (MOV container) is bigger than the source file is.
Exporting to any new QT format (say H264) is going to make a file that is dependent on the new QT bitrate you select but if it is higher than the bitrate shown in the Get Info Inspector box when the original WMV has been opened it will be bigger without a doubt. So if you have a 3Mb/sec WMV file that you export to 700 kb/sec for iPod basic it should be 1/4 of the size. Use 5Mb/sec fo Apple TV it should be 2/3 larger.
I rarely use QT Pro to export and when I do I don't use default settings. I prefer MPEG Streamclip which offers easier control of variables, batch file processing, deinterlacing and other things and it is free.

  • Exported Project via Quicktime Conversion-Some scenes "tear" at the top

I have completed a 17 min project made up mostly of photo/stills. Some have motion added some dont---it doesn't seem to matter to my problem: when I exported the project using Quick Time Conversion I noticed as I checked it prior to using iDVD to burn it to DVD that during cross dissolves and some other transitions there was a "digitized tearing" or pixels slow in locking into place in the upper 1/5th or so of the screen. I had not noticed this problem in previewing the rendered project prior to export. Using FCE v3.5HD. Anyone seen this problem? Is there a problem with some of the transitions or was it something that occurred in the export? I tried to burn to DVD via iDVD so I could see if the problem was off the top of the screen, but apprently I did something wrong during use of iDVD. When the iMac ejected the DVD after burn, I tried playing on a set-top and it wouldn't play, nor could I get it to play in the iMac. I also had difficulty getting the iMac to eject this DVD.

It sounds as if you have multiple problems here. The first problem is that QuickTime Conversion is not the way to export to iDVD. You should export to QuickTime Movie.

  • Please Help, Missing Project File and Discussion Advice Isn't Working.

    Here's the rundown:
I was working in iMovie HD 5 when the power got cut out on my external hard drive. When I try to reload my project I got the 'Missing Project File' error that has been discussed by many on this board.
    There are two known fixes.
    1) Open the package and go back to the '~' version of the project.
    2) Use the MovieTimeline.mov in the Cache to import it back into a new project.
    Solution #1 simply didn't work.
Solution #2 imports the full video as a single long clip but is significantly lower in quality than the original version.
In addition, the movie was shot in true widescreen and plays in quicktime in 16:9 mode, but when I import that .mov file into iMovie HD for some reason bars are added on the sides and top and bottom of the frame, and the bars are thicker on the sides so it stretches the picture and makes everything look taller.
Although I'd certainly much rather have my original project timeline back, I could still continue my work if I could figure out how to import the .mov so that it retains the quality and size that it had to begin with.
Does anyone have any idea how to import it without losing the quality and size or how to gain back an earlier project save?
Please help if you can, my grandfather's 83rd birthday gala celebration (2 days away!) depends on it!

I know you're in a rush, so I'll mention a couple other possibilities.
Solution #2 imports the full video as a single long
clip but is significantly lower in quality than the
    original version.
    • You shouldn't see any difference. The video imported from the Timeline Movie.mov is exactly the same as the original video. My guess is you're seeing some side effect of the widescreen issue. That, or your iMovie playback settings have changed.
In addition, the movie was shot in true widescreen
and plays in quicktime in 16:9 mode, but when I
import that .mov file into iMovie HD for some reason
bars are added on the sides and top and bottom of the
frame, and the bars are thicker on the sides so it
stretches the picture and makes everything look
    taller.
    • Make sure you're importing to a DV Widescreen project.
    • It might work to open the Timeline Movie.mov in QT Player Pro and export to a DV stream set to 16:9, then import that to the new project.
    • It's curious solution #1 didn't work. What happened when you tried that?
