Please help how to pass a JavaBean from servlet to jsp?
Hi there,
I have got a dispatch servlet and I want the dispatch servlet to get the data and store it in a JavaBean before dispatching to the appropriate JSP page. However, I don't know how to pass the javabean to the JSP when the servlet forward the request to the JSP. Is ServletContext.setAttribute() the only way to pass the javabean to the JSP page?
Thank you very much!
Edmund
You can use HttpServletRequest.setAttribute(String name, Object javabean) to set the javabean into the HTTP request that you are forwarding to the JSP.
In the JSP, you can access the Javabean using request.getAttribute(String name) and cast it to the right class.

How to pass a JavaBean from servlet to JSP?
Hi there,
I am working on a project that needs to handle quite a few client requests and I want to use the Front Controller pattern that is described in the J2EE pattern page.
The steps described in the front controller pattern is that:
1. A servlet (controller) process the client request.
2. It calls the appropriate cammand object and the cammand object gets the data from the data source and returns a JavaBean that contains the required data.
3. The servlet dispatch to the appropriate View (jsp page)
4. The JSP page displays the data in the JavaBean to the user.
However, I don't know how to pass the JavaBean from the servlet to the JSP page when the servlet forwards the control to the JSP page. Should I make the JavaBean with a request scope or higher? If so, how to uses it in the JSP page? Just refer by the ID of the JavaBean.
If any one knows there is an example or tutorial on how to use this pattern, please let me know.
Thank you !

EdmundCould you please give more info? i tried to do this, but always get a "Class not found exception":
response$jsp.java:65: Class org.apache.jsp.TestBean not found. TestBean bean = null;
although the class TestBean (no package name => defalt package) is in the WAR file and the Servlet seems to instantiate it (otherwise an exception would occur sooner in the TestServlet code).
my JSP code is:

Please help: How to pass variable from main select to subquery
I have a table with four columns (id, status, start_date and end_date) as follows. What I want is to get the difference between the statuses' start_date to find out how long it takes for the ID to change status. Basically getting the difference of the Start_dates of the statuses for the ID.

1 OLD 04-FEB-07 06-FEB-07

SELECT ID, (SELECT Start_date from tbl where Status = 'OLD' and ID = 1) - (SELECT Start_date from tbl WHERE Status = 'NEW' and ID =1) from tbl where ID = 1

Please help - how do I import music from my ipod into a new itunes library?
Hello
I would very much appreciate it if someone could tell me how to get the music from my old ipod mini into the new itunes library on my new laptop.
The mini was previously sync'd with my old PC which died so my files are only present on the ipod. Upon loading itunes, the software is only letting my sync the ipod providing I wipe it (obviously not desirable...)
Thanks for any support, AndyConnect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" as you already know will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
TuneJack Windows Only
iPod2PC Windows Only
iGadget Windows Only
iDump Windows Only
SharePod Windows Only
iRepo Mac and Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows
YamiPod Mac and Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows
iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay. -
How to send a message from Servlet to JSP
Dear all,
I have JSP, with JavaScript (AJAX). If the user click on the button, the text will be sent to a Servlet parsed by doGet() and the user get a response to his input, without reloading a page.
How can I send a message to the users (JSP) from Servlet, if he didn't clicked any button and to other visitor of the page also? Is it possible? I think like a chat, the server sends a message to all users who are subscribed.
I don't know, what should I get from user, maybe session, that I could send him personal or common messages in his textarea. I should also invoke some JavaScript function to update his page. I have met some chats, you don't do nothing and get messages. It is also without a JavaScript timer, which invokes doGet() method. Asynchronous, only when there is a message.
Please help me with a problem.
Thanks in advance.Hai ,
You can send any message through response.sendRedirect();
here is the coding try it
import java.io.*;
import javax.servlet.*;
import javax.servlet.http.*;

public void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)
throws ServletException, IOException {
res.setContentType("text/plain");
PrintWriter out = res.getWriter();
String username="java";
res.sendRedirect("http://localhost:8080/yourprojectname/jspfile.jsp?username="+username);

Please help- how do I transfer songs from my brother's Itunes onto my Ipod?
I would like to transfer songs and movies from my brother's Itunes into my Ipod (both are 7.0 version). How in the world do I do this? I have tried to sync individual songs from his Itunes onto my Ipod through the right click sync on the device menu, but it just leads me to a confusing summary screen about my Ipod. I don't want to move all of his songs/movies onto mine, just a few.
Thanks in advance!
hp laptop Windows XPOn your brothers PC, COnnect the ipod.
On the ipod summery page hit the "Music" tab and check "Manually manage songs and video" then hit the "Apply" button in the lower righthand corner
Now you can drag items in itunes like songs and video from itunes to the ipods name listed in itunes, which will add the item to your ipod.
Keep in mind tho...
If he has any purchased content you add to your ipod, you will need his ID if you plan on adding it and using it on your itunes when you go home -
Please help, Urgent ! creation of xml from servlet
Hi,
I have to write a servlet that takes user input from a html form and creates a xml file from those input parameters and transform that xml file into html form using xsl program. Whenever the user adds new values to the form this newly generated xml file should overwrite the previous xml file content.
Can anybody please tell me how to create a xml file from user input in servlet so that I can pass it to a transformer object.
Thanks in advance!why write out the XML, it seems to be only a temporary file?
Doing as you suggest is extremely risky for when several requests come in at the same time you can never be sure that the file contains the data that you just wrote to it.
Better to keep the XML all in memory.
For the XML creation, look no further than DOM. Most XML parsers provide excellent DOM support, I'll be using Xerces 2 here as that's what I'm most familiar with.
Document doc = new DocumentImpl();
Element root = doc.createElement("mydoc");
* fill in the XML
Element elem = doc.createElement("focuscontrol");
elem.appendChild(doc.createTextNode("alert('loaded')"));
root.appendChild(elem);
elem = doc.createElement("data");
elem.appendChild(doc.createTextNode("Hello World!"));
root.appendChild(elem);
doc.appendChild(root); creates an XML Document object like this:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<mydoc>
<focuscontrol>alert('loaded')</focuscontrol>
<data>Hello World!</data>
</mydoc>This XML Document object can be easily passed to an XSLT processor to turn it into HTML.
String path = getServletContext().getRealPath("/WEB-INF/xsl/");
TransformerFactory tFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
Source xslSource = new StreamSource(new File(path, "myxslfile.xsl"));
Source xmlSource = new DOMSource(doc);
t.transform(xmlSource, new StreamResult(out));where out is the PrintWriter for the servlet and your XSL file is stored in yourwebapp/WEB-INF/xsl (thus out of sight of prying eyes).
I leave it up to you to find an encoding of your request parameters into the generated XML that you like. -

Hi All....
I have a simple application and problem with it.
Once user logged in to system the user will redirect to LoginServlet.java controller.

this is my login servlet.
protected void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
ArrayList<BankAccountDTO> account_list = new ArrayList();
ResultSet resultSet = null;
LowFairAirDB airDB = null;

airDB = new LowFairAirDB();
String query = "SELECT account_id, type, description, balance, credit_line, begin_balance, begin_balance_time_stamp FROM bank_account";
airDB.sqlSelect(query);
resultSet = airDB.getResultSet();
while(resultSet.next()){
account_list.add(new BankAccountDTO(resultSet.getInt(1),
resultSet.getInt(4),
resultSet.getInt(5),
resultSet.getInt(6),
resultSet.getString(2),
resultSet.getString(3),
resultSet.getString(7)));
}catch(Exception ex){
}finally{
try{resultSet.close();}catch(Exception ex){}
airDB.sqlClose();
}I set bank account values to BankAccountDTO.java objects and add them to the arrayList.
Next I want to send this objects arrayList to books_details.jsp and wanna display each objects values using JSTL.
I still finding a way to go through this.
1. Can anyone say how can I do it?
2. Is there any other method to do the same thing without using JSTL?
thanks in advance,
Dil.Naishe wrote:
In your servlet,

Good. I would only follow the Java naming conventions. E.g. accountList or accounts instead of the ugly PHP/C conventions.
In the JSP,
lst = (List< BankAccountDTO >)request.setAttribute("account_list");
for(BankAccountDTO b: lst){
populate your HTML tags or whatever
Wrong. 1) You need getAttribute() and 2) you should not use scriptlets. Use JSTL c:forEach, e.g.<table>
<c:forEach items="${accounts}" var="account">
<tr>
<td>${account.id}</td>
<td>${account.type}</td>
<td>${account.description}</td>
</tr>
</c:forEach>
</table>To the topicstarter: for future JSP/JSTL related questions please use JSP/JSTL forum.

Passing database results from servlets to jsp
Hi everyone,
I have been trying to do what i thought would be a very simple thing...perform a search based on some criteria, and return the query result back to be displayed on a jsp page.
I have a jsp page where some dropdown lists are populated on entry to the page. This works fine. I want to (eventually!) perform the search based on what is selected in these dropdowns. When i click the search button, i invoke a servlet called "SearchInventory.java" which gets the result. I then store this result in an ArrayList object. I then set a bean property (bean name->SearchBean, property->inventory) from within the servlet, and redirect back to the search page. This works if the query only gets back one column.
Unfortunately, when i ask for more than one column in the query, i get a "java.lang.NullPointerException" error.
Here is my code for all segments:
JSP:
<%@ page language="java" import="java.util.ArrayList,java.lang.*,java.sql.*,javax.sql.*,PopLists.PopInvLists,beans.SearchBean"%>
<%
SearchBean sbean=new SearchBean();
ArrayList myAry=sbean.getInventory();
int size=myAry.size();
%>
<%
for(int i=0;i<size;i++){
String pname=(String)myAry.get(i);
%>
<%}%>
Servlet:
String QueryStr="select ProdName,ManufName from products";// where ProdID="+ProdID;
Statement stmt=conn.createStatement();
rs=stmt.executeQuery(QueryStr);
while(rs.next()){
rowAry.add(rs.getString(1));
rowAry.add(rs.getString(2));
rowSetAry.add(rowAry.clone());
sbean.setInventory(rowSetAry);
req.getSession(true).setAttribute("s_resbean",sbean);
res.sendRedirect("/DBTest/SearchInventory.jsp");
In the servlet, i have also tried the following method of redirecting back to jsp page:
String url="/SearchInventory.jsp";
RequestDispatcher dispatcher=getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher(url);
dispatcher.forward(req,res);
...this gives me a java.lang.ClassCastException
here is my "bean" class:
public class SearchBean extends HttpServlet{
private int searchFlag=0;
private static ArrayList inventory;
public static ArrayList getInventory(){
return inventory;
public void setInventory(ArrayList rs){
this.inventory=rs;
When i perform a query that selects just one column, and doesn't use any sort of search fields for selecting, it does seem to work. for eg, : "select ProdName from products" as the query will return the product names successfully.
Now, i realize what i'm doing is not correct....however, i don't know what the correct way of doing this is. Can someone please please show me how i should be going about doing all of this? It really shouldn't be difficult, but I just can't seem to get it to work.
Thanks in advance,
AdityaU have instantiated a search bean and populated its member variable i.e Array list , and added that bean to the session as an attribute. Then again why u need to instantiate the search bean in the jsp page.
What has to be done.
In the jsp page instead of instantiating the search bean ,get the search bean from the session attribute.
statement to be removed : SearchBean bean=new SearchBean()
statement to be added : SearchBean bean = session.getAttribute("bean");
