Please help... is my Macbook dead??

I have a black 2ghz MacBook running Leopard with 2gb Ram...
Everything was running fine when all of a sudden the screen and all applications freeze... I couldn't even use Force Quit on anything.... so I manually shut the machine down.
When turning it back on again I get the initial start up sound and the grey screen.... and thats it...!!!... no spinning beach ball, no apple logo... nothing. Simply will not reboot.
I have tried to boot in safe mode pressing "shift" after the start-up sound but still nothing... the screen stays grey for hours.
Anyone know what this problem may be and what I can do.
Many thanks for reading this and replying.

Just tried putting in Disk 1 of the Install disk on start up.... same issue..
I can hear the drive working but nothing comes up on screen... still that light grey. at the very least its not showing anything booting up on the screen.
If the screen itself is dead, why would it be grey?... and when I had the initial problem the screen had everything visible and the mouse could move around OK.. I just couldn't action anything and the colour beach ball was whirring away...!
Any other ideas?... Please?

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.

First, remove Comodo. You don't need it, and it sounds like it is causing a problem.
The other symptoms sound like you have adware installed. Comodo might have detected some components of that adware, or it might not have, but whatever the case, you should NEVER allow any anti-virus software to quarantine or delete files from your computer. See: How to remove infected files.
Regarding the adware, see my Adware Removal Guide.

  • Please help me! MacBook Pro stuck on apple logo and spinning wheel

Hi I'm really desperate and need help! My MacBook just stopped loading and would stay on the gray screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel.
I have tried safe mode and it would load a little and stop and then the loading bar would be blank and it would stay like that forever!!
I also have tried doing the single user mode and when I type the fsck - fy it will do a couple more lines then it will say error like a hundred times :(
I did verbose mode and it would just give me stuff that I have no idea what it saying I left on verbose mode for like 5 hours and it would just give me lines of stuff I have no idea what it's saying!
I downloaded lion through apple store so I don't have the disk I only have my snow leopard disk
Please please someone tell me a solution it's my moms laptop and I don't want to get in trouble!

Reboot in recovery mode an possibly repair over the internet.
    Command-R to the rescue.
Just hold down Command-R during startup and OS X Recovery springs into action. It lets you choose from common utilities: You can run Disk Utility to check or repair your hard drive, erase your hard drive and reinstall a fresh copy of OS X, or restore your Mac from a Time Machine backup. You can even use Safari to get help from Apple Support online. And if OS X Recovery encounters problems, it will automatically connect to Apple over the Internet.

  • Please Help - ODD acting MacBook!

Hi everyone, please help me if you can!
I just got my MacBook not even a week ago and up until now it has been running fine. An hour ago I was dragging icons I don't normally use out of the dock. I did a few then when I went to drag the iWeb icon out the dock froze. The dock is darker and "iWeb" is displayed above the icon as though I had just selected it. (I hope this makes sense.) I can no longer use the dock and it is still frozen. I have tried to restart, shut down, and log out from the apple icon in the menu bar to no avail (nothing happens). I decided to take the battery out manually to force a shut down, and shut and unplugged the laptop. After I took the batery out I wanted a minute or two then replaced the battery. Amazingly, the machine boots up as though it is coming out of sleep - dark screen over the desktop with the ... (forgive my technical jargon) little horozontal waiting/tick lines. Then the screen goes bright and I'm stuck at square one with a frozen dock and unable to shut down. I even tried remvoing the battery and just having the laptop plugged into the electrical outlet - the same thing happened.
It's been about an hour now since it started, I'm clueless as to what to do. I'm clueless as to what to do - the MacBook is a replacement for my old TiBook, and that was pretty much the blanket fix for any kind of freezing problem I ever encountered.
Oh, and because I forgot and it may help, it's the lower end MacBook with the 1.83 processor and the 512 MB of memory.
I'll be here, waiting. Please help if you can!!
    Thanks!
    Kristen

I'm sure there was a better way of taking care of your problem, but by now I'm sure you just wanted something quick. Your welcome.

  • Please Help.  Restore macbook air

Hi everyone. I've tried to restore my macbook air using the remote disc method described many times in this forum, but I think I have a new issue never discussed. Here is what I'm doing:
    1. Insert cd into my iMac
    2. Reboot macbook air and hold down option key
    3. Connect to wifi network and select remote MacOS cd as the bootup
Now, after I do all that, all I get is the loading screen. Eventually the machine will restart and boot up as it normally does to the operating system. What am I doing wrong here. All I want to do is restore my computer to it's original state. Please help me.

Thanks for the response. I get past step 9 where I select 'continue in Remote Install Mac OS X and my macbook air goes to a loading screen with a rotating globe. After it loads for about 5 minutes, the machine restarts and simply loads Mac OS X without entering the setup.

  • Please Help! Stolen Macbook Finder

Yesterday daytime, somebody broke into my house from kitchen window and stole my macbook and the charger (didn't steal anything else).
I have everything in it! You know what I mean?
I called Apple care and one said I need to hire lawyer then lawyer can contact Apple, Apple will trace my macbook. one said police investigator need to contact Apple and Apple will give them the information. Is these are true?
I called Police and told them about it this morning. I don't know if they really contact Apple or not...
I know about Undercover etc softwares but I haven't installed those in my macbook.
Any other way I can trace? or remotely use webcam to take picture?
oh and I don't have "back to my mac" thing either....
Please help! and Thank you in advance..

    Is these are true?
    Nope: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2526
Any other way I can trace?...I don't have "back to my mac" thing
No, not really. Not unless you had third party software installed that's designed to "phone home" when stolen.
Sorry, but you're probably out of luck.

  • Please Help! My Macbook won't Power up after I cancelled an update!

I was installing updates on my macbook when i accidentally pressed the power off button. Now everytime I try to turn it on, a screen appears and says, "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." I have done both and nothing has worked! I have tried to take the battery ou and press for 10 seconds and everything in the book...I dont know what else to do! I have had this macbook for less than a month! Please help!
    -Nikki

Take your original DVD installation disk that came with your MacBook and use that to boot your system (turn your system off, GENTLY insert the DVD until you feel a little resistance and then press the power button, then make certain that the DVD has been taken fully into the slot and immediately after that hold down on the "c" key so that the system boots from the DVD) . Once you reach the install screen look for the Utilities menu and select the Disk Utility from that menu. Once you enter the Disk Utility try a verify disk operation and if that reports errors then attempt a repair disk operation. After this, do a verify permissions (from within the Disk Utility) and repair those if needed. After this quit the Disk Utility and when you return to the installer screen quit the installer while holding down on the mouse button (or trackpad button), the latter will cause the DVD to be ejected and the system will again attempt to boot from the internal hard drive.
If after these operations you still can't boot from your hard drive then you will probably have to do an archive and install using your original installation DVD.

  • Please help...Macbook won't start up!

    All,
I need help with my Macbook because it won't turn on. A few nights ago it was shut down, but before completely turning off it stuck on a grey/white screen. The keys were unresponsive and only gave the "bell" sound when pressed. I turned it off by keeping the power button depressed.
Upon trying to switch it on last night, it loads up withthe apple symbol and the pinwheel but then goes to a grey screen reading "You need to restart your machine. Press and hold the power button or press the reset button". I tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM which did nothing.
I don't know much about Mac's but I am able to start it in safe mode, but what comes up doesn't mean a lot to me. it then stops and stalls whilst still with the black screen and white writing...?
Will I have to start with the disk utility etc?
Please, all advice will be very helpful!
    Thanks

    Hi
The "You need to restart your computer" message indicates a kernel panic, which often points to a hardware fault (often a RAM fault).
Can you reboot the computer from the original installation disk? (Start the computer, insert the disk, force-reboot it again, hold down the C key. If that doesn't work, reboot and hold down the Option key, and then choose the DVD as a startup source. If it loads to the installation screen, try running DIsk Utility from the Utilities menu - run Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. Let us know if you see any errors (from the Repair Disk routine).
Have you upgraded the RAM at all? If so, try removing the new RAM and leaving (or replacing with) the old RAM.
Is your Macbook still under warranty?
Do you have backups of your files?
    Matt

  • Please help with my macbook air!

Hi, every time I shut my laptop, and come back on I have to re-select my network option. If any of you know any way on how to fix this issue it would help so much! The last thing is that every time I try to go onto another website, It tells me safari cannot identify the website, and that the websites certficate has expired. Please help, it will be so appreciated. Thank you!

    Back up all data.
Unlock the Network preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Cllck Advanced, open the DNS tab, and change the server addresses to the following:
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.
    In Safari, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. Any difference?
    Notes:
    1. If you lose Internet access after making the above change to your network settings, delete the Google servers in the Network preference pane, then select the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. That should restore the original DNS settings; otherwise restore them yourself. Remember that you must clickApply in order for any changes to take effect.
    2. I don't use Google DNS myself, though I have tested it, and I'm not recommending it or any other DNS provider; the server addresses are offered merely for testing purposes. There may be privacy and technical issues involved in using that service, which you should investigate personally before you decide whether to keep the settings. Other public DNS services exist.

  • PLEASE HELP! My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep

My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep on its own any more. Currently, my Energy saver is set so that the display falls asleep after 1 minute, and the computer itself, after 3 minutes. Even if I don't have any softwares running, or anything else, it doens't fall asleep. Please give me some suggestion about what to do about this! (or would I need to take it to a shop? ... )

Well, since the machine does properly sleep when the lid is closed, my guess would be that you have a software conflict and not a hardware problem. Since your are up to date, have repaired permissions, and can't remember anything else that may have changed, it could be difficult to track down the culprit.
One thing you can try, it takes a bit of work but will help show if software is the real problem. You could create a new user account, and don't install anything new in it. Log in as the new user, and see if sleep works there. Often as you use your main user profile, you accumulate software programs and utilities, and sometimes then can conflict with one another. If you create a fresh user account, often it will not have the same software conflict.
If the new account sleeps normally, then you can assume that you have a software conflict somewhere, and you should think through what you have installed. If the new user account has the same problem, my guess would be that something is out of whack with the OS, and you need to decide if a full system reinstall is worth it (that is a big decisions, don't just jump into it).
Regardless of the outcome, after you have used the second account for a test, you can simply delete it.
    Cheers,
    Josh

  • Please Help - Garageband on Macbook Air

    Hello,
I just bought a new Macbook Air and was all excited to start jammin my guitar using a guitar to USB cable, until I hooked it up and the only sound that comes out of the speakers is a continuous loud thudding sound (DUD-DUD-DUD-DUD-DUD-......). I sometimes faintly hear the guitar amid the thudding but that's about it.
I've checked the preferences and they look OK.
    Audio Output: Built In Output
Audio Input: C-Media USB headset (strangely, the comp recognizes it as a headset, but I hope that's not an issue here)
This is my first mac and I'm now writing with little energy in the tank. Please let me know if there's a solution (I've done some googling but to no avail).
    Thanks,
    Kay

I'm assuming you have selected the USB interface in GB's preference's?
    What are you plugging into?
In other words a hub? keyboard? into the Mac?
When you have that issue try restarting. If that doesn't help then try unplugging and plugging it back in.
Apple changed their USB Core Audio at 10.5. This can be an issue for some class compliant (driverless) interfaces.
It's important to check compatibility for any interface...
But a good clue tends to be spec's like: Compatible with Mac OS® X 10.5 or 10.6...
If you continue to have issues and are looking to just plug a guitar in. Right now Native Instruments has a 50% off sale on their Guitar Rig Mobile.
It's $59.00 and comes with Guitar Rig Mobile...which you can run stand-alone or in GB as an instrument.
Much better system then what you have...and will still have value to you as you progress or graduate from a beginner.
If you need to use mic's or other types of I/O (inputs and outputs) then something like the Sapphire may make more sense for you...
But if you don't want to spend a lot of money and just need to go direct in with a guitar the NI box is a viable option.

  • Please HELP!! MacBook stuck on "Select your Keyboard" screen after installing Snow Leopard on a brand new hard drive!

Hello, I just recently replaced my internal hard drive in my MacBook [from a 250gb to a blank/empty 750gb]. I managed to get OS X Snow Leopard installed with the DVD. Setup seems to run fine at first, I get the screen in space with the welcome message different languages while music plays. Then I'm asked to select my country, then here is my problem- the next screen asks me to "Select Your Keyboard", I select & click "Continue" button, then my Mac is just showing the spinning beachball & it stayed that way all night =( I don't know how to fix this. Anyone experience this or have any solutions for me? I'd appreciate any help! Thank you! [I've been googling since yesterday with no luck on finding an answer].

It's diagnostic software. It's supposed to help you find problems. I don't think anyone is making any software yet that fixes hardware problems.
    That said, the two comments:
    Le husky wrote:
Macbook pro freezes for no reason even after installing 10.8 on a brand new hard drive....
.....also my trackpad is behaving very erraticaly sometimes, it's like it is possessed by a ghost....
would lead me to think it's the logic board. On older MacBook Pro's both the USB I/O ports and the keyboard/trackpad are fed out of an integrated USB controller integrated into the South Bridge I/O controller. On newer models, the USB ports come out of an integrated North/South bridge controller and the keyboard/trackpad are handled by an SMC controller, which itself interfaces with the I/O controller. All of these items are on the logic board, and they're all unrepairable.
...unless of course the "internal drive [that] is installed in a cheap external case" is itself causing the problems. Another thing to try might be a different USB port, if you haven't done so already.
I didn't know the price for Scannerz went up. I could have sworn I only paid 30-some bucks for it. Maybe it was on sale at the time. I don't remember.
    In any case, good luck.
