So I saw on a website that I can make my computer faster if I type "sudo rm -rf /" into the terminal but now something is wrong with my Macbook...
1: What did I do wrong and how do I fix it?
2: Will this void my warranty?

If you had any important data on your hard drive that was not backed up quit using your hard drive immediately so you don't overwrite data that you want to recover. To recover your data use disk recovery software such as, Data Rescue 3.
Only reinstall Snow Leopard after your data is safely recovered.
Once you are up and running again please report the post that got you into this pickle to save others from suffering the same fate.

Please help. I think I just bricked my own phone. Despite worries after reading all of the rpoblems people have had upgrading their iphone to Ios 6, I used iteunes to do this to my iPhone 4. (I upgraded to the latest itunes.) Now after 1.5 hours of everything seeming to work OK, all I have is an Itunes graphic on my phone and nothing going on any more in Itunes. The phone doesn't shut down normally or anything. Suggestions? Should I just do a restore operation? I did back up my apps and pics.

Thank you. I ended up performing the Restore after I did an Update, and performing the restore solved the problem----I now have a functioning iPhone with all of my data, pics, and apps on it. Fortunately I made sure that I backed up my iPhone before I tried to update to iOS6. Man, what a headache though, and it sounds like I had it easy compared to some other horror stories I've read. I won't update my iOS on my iPhone again; i've learned my lesson. It remains to be seen whether iOS6 will be worth it :-)

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

i m usin an apple ipod 30GB black colour
when i connected the ipod to the PC, a window poped up askin if i wanted to update or restore my ipod i clicked on RESTORE and the next moment i disconnected my ipod. After my ipod is not havin any software in it, i tried again restoring my ipod by connectin it to the PC and clickin on ipod updater 2006-06-28, window shows initialiazing n then tht window doesn't responds
please help me

If the iPod Updater is freezing on "Initializing..." for more than a few minutes, then try this:
1 - Close the iPod Updater (you may need to force it to clsoe through Task Manager).
2 - Go to your administrator account on your computer.
3 - Press the "CtrlAltDelete" keys to open Task Manager.
4 - Under the "Processes" tab, find "iPodService.exe", and end that process.
Go back and open the iPod Updater again, and see if you can try a restore again.

Someone please help. I think I just messed something up really bad.

I wanted to change the name of my home folder so I proceeded to type this into the terminal wherein I wrote my old home folder name in place of "oldname" and my desired home folder name in place of "newshortname.": sudo mv /Users/oldname /Users/newshortname
I then logged out and logged back in to find my dock and background reset to the default, and most of my files missing (my applications remained because they are not stored in the home folder). I am extremely nervous that I just reset my computer, but I checked my disk utility app and it tells me that I have used
86.23 GB out of 319.21 total GB in my hard drive. Now, there is no way that I could have deleted all of the files in my home folder and still have around 85 GB of disk space used up. So my question is: how do I find my old home folder again so that I can access all of my files?

Go to system prefs and naviagte to accounts, then select your account and control click on that account, it should give you an advanced optiotn select it and point to your home folder in the home folder field.

I'm really desparate for some help.
Directly after downloading Security Update 2007-006 my iMac G3 froze. It was switched off at the mains and since then won't get past the grey screen with the apple and the spinny thing.
I know very little about how computers work, troubleshooting etc so have spent hours searching the forum and the apple support pages, following which I have tried -
start in safe mode - no change
Boot from install disc and run disc utility. This appeared to be working but disc utility can't repair the drive and comes up with the following - 'Error - the underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)'.
So I decided to have a go at starting up in single user mode and use fsck. But to no avail, it starts up in single user mode but never gets as far as the command line prompt. The final 3 lines of text say -
'disk0s5: I/O error.
Load of /sbin/mach_init, errno 2, trying /etc/mach_init
Load of etc/mach_init failed, errno 2'
and the screen is frozen, no chance of typing any commands in.
So HELP please! What does it all mean? Is my hard drive dead? Can I do anything else to try to save it? Is there anyway I can retrieve the contents of the drive if it is dead?
Sorry this is so long, I thought it best to try to explain methodically what has happened. If anyone ot there can help I will be made up.

I've seen this error when the read/write arm on a hard drive becomes inoperative. It looks like you need a new drive. Don't buy anything larger than 120GB, and the 7200 RPM drives work fine. Drive replacement pictoral - Takeapart for swapping drives - slot load. When you get to the step that advises taking out the drive cage, you don't really have to do that. Just loosen the 4 drive hold-down screws and slide the drive out.
Unfortunately, anything on the old drive is gone. This is how we all learn to make backups.

Thanks for your time! I have been keeping very detailed notes day to day for the past seven plus years. Lately, I've done most of my entries right on my Laptop (Macbook Pro - OS 10.4.11.)
My Palm Tungsten T2 would NOT charge more than 1/4 of the way after many hours. I did a hard reset and wiped out all my data on the handheld.
When I went to Hot sync, it kept saying "identifying user." Then it would NOT sync. I played with the conduit settings - but had no luck making it work.
That's when I did something very foolish.
I set just the calendar conduit setting (the most important one to me) to:
"handheld over rides MacIntosh"
Bad idea.
Since the handheld was blank, it wiped out my Calendar on the laptop.
(Noooooo!!!!!)
Please tell me there is SOME kind of back-up of some sort.

If this is an iCloud calendar, and the calendar entries were still on your iPhone when you last backed it up to iCloud, it may be possible to restore them from the iCloud backup. Doing this is a bit tricky, and you'll have to follow the process outlined here to do so: Recovering deleted iCloud contacts from an iCloud backup. This was written as a process to restore contacts, but the process is the same for iCloud calendars (just substitute calendars for contacts).

So recently i tried to install windows 7 through bootcamp but the install failed..
So then i Restarted the mac by holding down the power button
It gives me the message of:
The Computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click 'ok' to restart the computer and then restart the installation.
Restarted the computer each time i restart i get this message
Pressed alt and all the other option commands
Didnt work..
Now i have no computer apart from this work one..

Select OSX when the boot manager appears.
Take the time to read the boot camp documentation, if you don't know how to switch OS it is likely that you don't know some other boot camp procedures and as boot camp can delete everything on your machine if done wrong .......
And if you have not yet backed up the OSX installation, do it before you do anything else!

I went to upload my songs from my itunes last night and i disconnected my ipod as usaul but now all i get is a red circle with do not disconnect i have tried re booting the mac and have even changed the docking port to just the basic in out lead and still nothing just this red circle that says do not disconnect. I even plgged my ipod in my pc i know i have apc as well but still doesnt see it and still this circle what is wrong with it anyone know.

Re-check your setup for IPOD Device under Music.
Make sure the settings are correct for the operation that you want to use.
Make sure all your Windows XP updates are up-to-date.
You didn’t mention the type of IPOD you had or Version your running?

Getting Error Page after two VO substitution - urgent, please help

I substituted two VOs in the CWB Allocation page. Did everything (I think) according to Oracle doc, but when trying to open that page I am getting ERROR PAGE and 'You have encountered an unexpected error. Please contact the System Administrator for assistance. '
Please, help. I understand it is something fundamentally wrong, but it does not give me any error messages to even start working on.

Error Page

And there is no link on this page except the Logout link, which, of course, just logs me out of apps.

Problem with touch screen. Please help!!!

Ok I bought an iPad about a month ago now. At first it worked perfectly, runs apps smoothly, etc. But then something happened to the touch screen, it just randomly like pressed itself, it went into apps on its own and zoom in and out while on safari just randomly. For about 3 weeks this issue disappeared, but now it happens again but more constantly and for more time please help. OK...so it seems that many iPad owners have the same issue with the screen "self registering touches". You'll see multiple posts on the forums from "self touching" to "self registering" to "freaking out".
Well, I also have this annoying problem.
Trust me when I say that cleaning the screen, resets, charging, deleting apps, static, and so on haven't anything to do with causing or resolving this issue.
Here is a little tip to show you what is actually going on. Download a free app that shows you "screen touches". Harbor Master is one that I've heard of that led me to this...but I prefer to use that pocket pond app...only because I can just sit back and watch without having to move boats around.
...When you notice the problem, open up the app. I've noticed on mine that it only self registers touches along the side. Exact location is (when holding iPad in landscape position, home button on left) along the top of the screen...from top middle to the top right corner.
I have called Apple...the tech was polite and tried to help. ...But the only suggestions were to reset (as i've already done) then if that didn't work I was to do a reload while sync'd. He stated that if none of that worked then to take it to the store...
Since I am in Florida for the month and the nearest Apple store is 6hrs away...I will wait until I go back home HI and visit a store that is close by.

PLEASE HELP: Does Not Boot in Rescue and Recovery Mode!

My X60s started to kind of freak out. I don't have a virus or anything, it's just being weird. I created a backup when it was working perfectly but I can't restore to the backup. Whenever I try doing it through windows, It always warns me not to restart my computer or it won't work. Then when I go through the setup to restore it and click restore, it pauses for about five seconds and then restarts my laptop automatically. But when I click the blue button on bootup, it brings me straight to the BIOS and gives me NO option to restore my laptop. PLEASE HELP! I've spent hours trying to get it to work and nothing is helping.

Ok, I think it has something to do with either my registry or vrlogon.dll I restored my registry to it's original state and that didn't fix anything so I think it has to do with vrlogon.dll I was having problems with the fingerprint reader and I heard it might have to do with the vrlogon.dll I installed a program that is supposed to restore this file, but it didn't fix anything. Upon closer inspection, I found that it deletes any third party software that may be affecting windos files. I think by using this I accidently overrode any Lenovo software that was in .dll's or other files. Is there anywhere I can download these files from Lenovo? I've already tried reinstalling the programs individually, but it doesn't do anything.

Mystery--- PLEASE HELP!!

Okay so I was in a session that I have been working on for days! all of a sudden all the tracks went to mute...except for external midi trakcs. but I couldnt find anything that was in solo. so I just pressed 'S' anyways...and all the tracks stopped doing it!! But then when I go to create a New mono track..there are dots next to input 1 and 2 in the selection window before you even create the track---this is the only session I have seen that in...it looks like this •input 1 and on the bottom •input 2, but all the other inputs have no dots next to them....Here is the real problem!!! ONLY THAT SESSION KEEPS CRASHING! i dont even need to press play...it will just crash on its own...it wont go past measure 5.1.1.1......Please help!! maybe i messed up something iin my environment. Idunno...Please help!

Sound like a corrupted project. Disable the Core Audio (press control while launchin Logic) and bypass all the Plug Ins. Then bring them back one by one - as soon as you activate a corrupted Plug Logic will crash so you at least know what is causing this mess.
If this doesn´t help you can at least retrieve all your Audio files and Plug In settings in order to export them into a fresh project, which of course is a pain in the bum....

I don't think you're on iOS 5, I think you're using iOS 6. That's the latest version.
Unless you've used iCloud to back up your documents, you won't be able to restore them. And for future reference, you don't have to uninstall Pages to update your iPad anymore. Sorry about this.
