  • Please Help! Mac Pro 2008 Power Problem!

Hi there! The reason of this message is to let you guys know about my problem
Last Thursday i was working all night with my 2008 Mac Pro. Early in the morning went to shut down my computer and discovered that i had a "no video signal" in my Dell monitor. Tried to solve that but i couldnt solve it. So I did a force shut down with the button
During the evening when ive returned home i tried to start up my computer but nothing happened when I press the Power button but a "click" sound.
This computer always performed really well. But right now my computer is not doing anything -no power- but that sound ive mentined.
I want to know if my computer is going to work with a new power supply or is something even worse -hope not-
Thanks a lot for all your help in advance!!

I have seen these symptoms before.
It could be a component like hard disk, video card or worse, power supply.
If you are getting a "click" sound what you want to do is see if the Mac can respond to a component missing.
Like hearing a heart beat through sound. Disconnecting components is a valid troubleshooting process.
Disconnect the following until you hear a chime:
    1. All peripherals including display -- USB, FireWire, etc.
    2. Video Card
    3. Hard disk
    4. RAM
If you hear a "heartbeat" add components back until it goes zombie again. Then at least you will know which thing needs replacing.
May also try zapping PRAM  at boot: CMD-OPT-P-R
One time a MacPro was catatonic.
I booted to another drive with DiskWarrior. DW brought it back to life.
    Good Luck

  • Please help, my macbook pro is super hot, how can i fix it.

please help, my macbook pro is super hot, how can i fix it.

I am guessing you have just bought a new macbook pro,  I did the same thing when I first unpacked mine.
You will get asked if you are using it on your lap, because they think that you are blocking the vents.
the macbook pro will get really hot around the E R T and F keys and  I O P and L keys and the metal strip between the keyboard and the screen.
I have found the graphics accelerator heats the machine up more than the actualy processor.
you should report it to apple care before your 90 days is up, they may or may not send you to a genius booking.  Just incase you have issues with your machine later due to the heat buildup early on, that way they have a log of the problem.
My macbook pro runs alot cooler than it did when i first got it, but still gets hot on heavy usage
You shouldnt really worry unless it shuts itself down as then you have some serious problems, when it gets hot u should be able to hear the fans running and it will prolly keep the temp aroun 101-104 c under heavy load.   If you can't hear the fans, shut it down and take it back to the store.
    Hope this helps you

  • Please help my mac is so slow coming up and going to different places. the flower keeps coming up all the time.

Please help my mac is so slow coming up and going to different places. the flower keeps coming up all the time?????

I'm having this problem but only online. I've confirmed that it is the computer (2007 MacBook), and it only happens when I'm using wi-fi connection. My other MacBook (2010) is connecting with wi-fi fine, and when I plug this MacBook into the ethernet connection it is also doing fine. I've re-started, check the memory, deleted cookies, histories, gone as far as uninstalling and re-installing browswers. Used the System Preferences network diagnostics and got an "all good". Ideas appreciated.

My facetime doesnt work. If I call somone they see I call but when they accept it doesnt work and when they call me the green camera light turns on but no sound or pop up of the video chat screen appears, please help! Macbook pro user.
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

I just wanted to follow this up by saying that you were entirely correct in your diagnosis of the situation.  My computer did have the faulty part you linked to.  I brought my laptop in and specifically told them to run that test, had it fail and then argued with the person at the genius bar and the manager.  Eventually they offered to have it sent out and have everything replaced for free of charge.  They did so mainly because I had complained about graphical issues almost every other time I had come in with problems and no one ran the test.  They should have caught this problem during my warranty, but they didn't, even though I mentioned the problem.
Anyhow, after having the part replaced, I haven't had my computer crash a single time since, or had many of the issues mentioned above.  I've never had this experience before.  Even brand new, I got occasional crashes.  Hopefully this new trend continues.
I do find that web browsing is still incredibly slow.  Web browsers just chug along at a slow pace, even though I have great internet speed.  Maybe I'll try just deleting my web browsers and reinstalling them...
Anyhow, thank you for your help and knowledge Clinton.

  • Please help with Macbook Pro

Please read my story because I really need some help...
I've had my Macbook Pro for only a little over a year now but it has already given me tons of problems and headaches. I was very happy when I first got it but over the next few months I noticed strange things with it. For instance, the lid is slightly bent but not so much that it still looks ordinary when closed. I was annoyed with it but I tolerated it since it is not that disruptive. Then dust appeared underneath a small part of the screen, forming a rather conspiscuous, slightly discolored spot. Again I was annoyed but I just went with it. And then after only 5 months after purchase, something related to the hard drive broke. I think the ribbon cable that was connecting it to the motherboard died or something. It was still under warranty so it was easily fixed. A few months passed without incidents. Then a month after its warranty expired, it started to have kernel panics every single day. Most of the time the screen would just become a mass of messed up colors and nothing would respond. Sometimes the screen just went black and then the computer shuts itself down. Other times the computer just freezes with nothing responding and I have to force shut it down. I sent it to an Apple service center and had it diagnosed. The genius said that the hard drive is damaged and needs replacing but other components are still fine. So I bought a new hard drive and had it replaced. For a few weeks, the problem seem to have gone but soon, the kernel panics started again and occurred more frequently. After days of research I finally found out the problem is RAM related. I tested each stick and each slot and concluded that the bottom ram slot was busted. The Apple Service Center offered no help but to replace the motherboard (or logic board). I cannot go with this because I already spent a ton of money in purchasing the computer. I also could not get Apple Care because it is very expensive and I had no ability to spend more. So I resorted to just buying a single 4gb ram stick and tried to live with only one ram slot. I thought that I could finally relax and try to enjoy the computer even with all of its annoyances. But only a few days ago the Wifi just turned itself off and won't turn on. Only after a restart will it start working again. I tried to tolerate it but it keeps turning itself off just minutes after I turn the computer on. I suspect that it might be a hardware problem (again) because the same thing is also happening with my Bootcamp partition; wifi disconnects and will not reconnect. Bluetooth also is not working anymore. I know that this is a vague question but I'm desperate. Is there anything at all that I can do in order to fix all of the problems and prevent all sorts of headaches? I feel that I have tolrated enough and I just can't take it anymore. I want to have it replaced but I do not know how I am going to do that without Applecare (which again is very expensive for someone like me). Please help me. I do not want to go back to normal, less expensive PC's. If this keeps up then I will be forced to do so because it is very expensive to buy another macbook.

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience but I do not think you can get AppleCare at this point in time.
Can I purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan anytime?
You can purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan anytime within the one-year limited warranty period. Your eligibility for coverage under the AppleCare Protection Plan starts from your hardware purchase date. Apple strongly recommends that you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan when you purchase your Apple product to maximize the additional benefits provided under the plan.
You will most likely need to try to sell the mac for a parts machine and consider a PC. You may wish to explore Apple refurbished Macs that have a warranty of a1 year.
There are also many sellers of used Macs but since there aren't any extended warranties it is some what risky.

  • Please help, my macbook pro won't boot

    Hey there, i need help
My macbook pro wont start, so after i press the power button, the apple logo will pop out with a rotating circle below the logo, and there's also a bar below, but in my case that bar will only run til almost complete (there's only about 0.1cm left) and it'll suddenly go off
I've tried to use Safe Mode boot and fsck -fy, they didn't work.
I've also tried to enter the Disk Utility and repair the hd, but it keeps on experiencing error, it says "Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk ...." for both the TOSHIBA and Macintosh HD
From what i remember i haven't ever used the Time Machine backup before
How do i fix this without losing my files? I have bunch of important projects there and i need to finish them soon
    Please help, thank you

  • Need help with Mac Pro purchasing decision

I've read preliminary reviews on the new Mac Pro, and I'm ready to upgrade my current Mac Pro (which is Dual 2.4 Ghz Quad-core with 32 GB RAM).  But I'm going through some major turmoil in the decision.  My current Mac Pro, aged as it may be, has been good to me, and when it needed upgrading, it was so easy to do.  I installed an additional two internal hard disks, giving the Mac Pro 3 TBs of internal storage.  RAM upgrade was a breeze, and when the graphics card went out, I was able to buy and install a replacement without a hiccup.
I love the low profile of the new Mac Pro, albeit I'll still be putting it on the floor - I don't like having my desktop computer in my desk work area.  And it looks like upgrading the RAM in the new Mac Pro is pretty simple (although horribly expensive).  I would require a CD/DVD drive, so that becomes a piece of "stuff" I have to clutter my work are with.  However, most importantly, the internal storage issue, FOR ME, is huge.  Without the ability to add internal drives, getting the 1TB flash storage is a must, but sooooooo expensive.  AND.. I still need additional storage (more than half of my current 3 TBs is in use).
Moreover, the whole lack of upgradability has me concerned that the new Mac Pro may disappear like the G4 Cube.  I haven't seen any rave reviews of the new Mac Pro overall.
    But I need to upgrade.
I have configured a new Mac Pro on the Apple Store about 100 times now, but never making the purchase for all of the above reasons, as well as the $5K price tag that it keeps ending up at.   I even started looking at refurbished Mac Pros (newer than mine, but the same old huge silver case).  The advantage is that it's upgradeable, and I won't end up with an optical drive or external hard drives cluttering my desk space.
The truth is, every time I go to buy, either a new Mac Pro, or a refurbished one, I hit a wall.  I'm walking the fence, wondering if I should walk it until a newer Mac Pro shows up with more expandability options (although it seems unlikely since Apple's direction seems to be form over function).
The new Mac Pro has been out for awhile, so I am looking for feedback from people who are kind of in my shoes, but already bit the bullet.  I don't want to encourage replies of regret, but I also would prefer the truth over grandiose reviews simply to justify making the leap (and dropping some huge bills).  It happens... "I just spent 5 grande, I better **** well love it, and I'll make sure everyone else thinks I do!"   ;-)
Please share your experiences.  How have you gotten around the lack of upgradeability on the internal storage?  I have had bad experiences with external drives in the past.  Firewire drives were fast and furious, but the were not as reliable as internal drives.  USB drives lag, and that dreaded spin up time every time the Mac OS does something that wakes up all the drives, even if the external drives weren't actually being accessed (never had that problem with Firewire drives, maybe because they were always spun up?).
Anyway, I don't want my buyer's pain to turn into buyer's remorse, so I appreciate all the wisdom any of you would be willing to share.
    Thanks,
    Bill

I'll offer my comments although there are others much better qualified to answer than I am.
First, the reason I bought the machine that I got was that I found an "open box" deal at a local retailer and got a substantial discount from the normal list price. Otherwise, I might not have gone to the nMP quite as quickly as I did. Regarding ram and the ssd drive, both of these can be upgraded at some later date if I find that is needed. The ram I will probably bump asap, filling the one empty slot with likely an 8gb OWC module.
To run your VGA monitors, you will need 2 passive mini-display port to VGA adapters. You can buy these pretty much anywhere, the Apple ones are superb quality at a price but other options are out there. These will plug into 2 of the Thunderbolt ports on the nMP.
Regarding cpu's and gpu's it gets a bit confusing. Basically right now it depends on the software that you are going to run. It is not likely coincidence that FCPX 10.1 came out basically at the same time as the nMP, as it really highlights full use of the multicore cpu's plus the dual fast gpu's. FCPX really screams on the nMP.
Right now, it seems more video software is making optimum use of both the multicore cpu's and dual gpu's in the nMP. Other software, most notably photo software that should also benefit, is lagging behind. For instance (going only from memory) Adobe software is not very good at using multi-core cpu's nor does it use multiple gpu's either. You can find comparisons of running Photoshop filters on a 3.7ghz 4-core vs the (slower clock speed) 6 or 8 cores and the 4-core comes out close or even faster in some tests because Photoshop uses only a single core, which on the 4-core machine is faster.
However, this is a pretty specific instance and generally buying the fastest cpu and gpu that you can afford is a good plan. Especially so for the gpu's as right now, the video may end up being the only component that does not end up with some sort of upgrade option in the foreseeable future.
If I was going to order a system under the circumstances you have stated, the 6-core with the D500 gpu's sure looks like the sweet spot in the lineup, and probably money well spent. After I would probably upgrade the ssd next, since in order to upgrade it later you have to remove a perfectly good ssd since there is only one slot. Personally I am ok with the 256gb as my boot and system drive, since with Thunderbolt you have basically PCIe access to an external box that can have either Sata or PCIe expansion for whatever storage you can afford.
As I said earlier, right now I am going cheap and using Apples Thunderbolt to firewire cable, which is allowing me to run my existing Lacie firewire drives in a daisy chain just as I did on the old MP.
Upgrading the ram at purchase or later is your choice, there are certainly less expensive options but with only 4 slots you have to weigh the cost of discarding or trading in the original Apple ram when you decide to swap it out for bigger modules. Plus not all ram can be mixed and matched, you may have to remove all the existing ram in order to add just a single high capacity (16gb or larger) module.
Again, hope I have helped more than adding to your confusion.

  • Please help! Officejet Pro L7380 refusing to print

    Hi,
My officejet pro had a strange power outage (nothing else, computer etc affected) and since then has been flashing and displaying the message "The following printheads has a problem: magenta/cyan" and refuses to print.
I have used the HP diagnostic tool which did not find any problems. I have also restarted both the computer and the printer as well as removing the cartridges and replacing them.
    Please help!

    Hello ghwhy,
It could be that the printheads needs to be reseated or replaced. Follow this document in order to clean and reseat the printheads:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01446637&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3198092&tmp...
Remember that it's important to let the carriage move all the way to the left of the printer before you remove the printheads. If it doesn't move when you open the lid of the printer, just press and hold the OK button for a few seconds.

  • Help deciphering Mac Pro kernel panic report

    Hi all,
my Mac Pro (early 2009, quad core 2.93GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285) has experienced some kernel panics with automated restarts (8 in total) over the past couple weeks. All panic logs show hardware errors of the "Read ECC" kind, though the affected cores vary (3x CPU 0, 2x CPU 2, 1x each CPU 4, 6 and 7). I am hoping that it's only one of the DIMMs gone bad (I was thinking about upgrading the RAM anyway), but I fear it might be the mem controller, one of the caches or the CPU itself.
There seem to be quite a few knowlegable people around, so can you please have a look at the panic log and give me a hint towards the culprit? Would be much appreciated.
    Best regards, Armin

The Mac Pro's Xeon Processors feature Hardware Error Correction, and use Error Correcting Code memory.
Eight additional check bits (called Syndrome bits) are stored with each word in RAM memory. When Read out, the data and the syndrome are used together to detect and correct errors.
Single-bit errors are corrected on-the-fly with essentially no slowdown is processing speed.
Uncorrectable errors such as most double-bit errors cause a Kernel panic by design, to halt the machine and keep errors from propagating into your data.
Your kernel panic does indeed show the characteristics of an uncorrectable RAM memory error. The likelihood that the problem is caused by any of the other failures you listed is vanishingly small.

  • Please help with camerafx pro

ok i have a nokia e71 i finally figured out how to instal cameraFX by changing settings and date and it worked, yay right? nope cuz you cant take pictures or anything, i have a useless program on my phone that i cant use. so where can i download a camerafx full version for nokia e71 for free, or is there another camera program thats full version for my phone. i want one that i can take off the sound settings and flash, for i like to sneak pics of the my kids without them knowing. someone please help.. after days of trying and now i get it on there but i cant use it im tired of trying, and my serach for a full version is getting no where

  • HELP!  Mac Pro Desktop...  Can/Should I run with my NEC 2070NX LCD?

My main reason for considering a MAC is my photography work, my peers tell me to go this route (Mac). I currently run Adobe Photoshop CS2 on a PC and HP Laptop.
I have been considering buying an iMAC 20" OR 24".. now the MAC PRO Desktop! Still undecided! Comments & Suggestions greatly appreciated!
I am leaning towards the MAC PRO Desktop purchase, pretty much base unit for now Dual 2.66, 250 HD, 256 Graphics, etc.
I am thinking if using my existing NEC LCD with the Mac Pro Desktop... Can I run with my NEC 2070NX LCD?
I bought the NEC about 2 months ago.. highly recommended for photo use due to the LCD Panel being an S-IPS type, much better than TFT as I hear!

Mac Pro Desktop (to be)   Mac OS X (10.4)   Current PC guy, to be first time MAC!

I loathe Windows and have been a Mac user since the Apple II+ so far be it from me to discourage anyone from switching...but....Photoshop is not yet a Universal Binary which means it doesn't run natively on the Mac Intel line. If you have a good, fast windows machine now, moving to a mac will be a downgradein speed. Overall it may be a win if you are experiencing crashing, have problems with viruses or have other issues, but if you have a fast, stable PC running Photoshop that is working well for you the lesser speed of PS on a Mac is something to be aware of. Your monitor is no concern or problem. A base unit purchase, however, is. The base 1gig of ram is insufficient for all but the most casual user of a MacPro and it is wholly insufficient for a heavy Photoshop user because Photoshop needs RAM and so does Rosetta in order to run Photoshop in emulation on the Intel board. (don't bother nitpicking if emulation isn't the exact term ) Three megs of RAM is, IMHO, your base configuration, and if you want to use Aperture, the ATI card becomes part of the base configuration too. But...the MacPRo wants memory in pairs and three gigs, it turns out, handicaps the speed of the machine a bit...so while three gigs is a "base" (again...IMHO) for Photoshop, 4 gigs is my strong recommendation (which I followed personally).

  • Advise please - Ordering new Mac Pro

My boss told me to order one of the new Mac Pros today. I went to the Apple store and placed a tentative order but before I send it on for payment I'm looking for a little advice from all you experts who have helped me so graciously in the past. I'll list the pre-confirgured order below. Let me know what you think. I'm looking to find out if I'm on the right track for the work I do (so I don't look stupid to the company honchos) and if the hardware is adequate. I'll buy an additional 8G of RAM (probably OWC) and transfer my current three TB hard drives from my [old] 3.0Ghz Dual Core Mac Pro over to the 3.2Ghz Quad-Core (giving me 4TB HD space altogether with a 2TB LaCie external for backup].
Primarily I do film editing using Final Cut Pro, video capturing, rendering and conversions to various media formats. I also burn a lot of sample work and pre-production DVDs. I do a lot of other stuff too but that's the lighter stuff. Here's my pre-order, hence the two SuperDrives (as well as a third LaCie USB optical drive):
    Airport Extreme card
    Two 16X SuperDrives
    Two 3.2Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
    2GB (2X1GB) of RAM
    1TB 7200 RPM Serial ATA
    Accessory kit
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT w/512MB (Two dual-link DVI).
    Wireless mighty mouse and keyboard.
I have two 30" Apple HD displays to connect.
Comes in at a little under $5,000. We will pass my current Mac Pro on to the "new" guy.
    Thanks!
    Lisa

Looks good; lucky you. So there is a good reason to have a boss...
You are wise to purchase the extra RAM from OWC rather than from Apple.
Sounds like it will be a great machine; in a couple of years, though, you will probably be passing it on to the "new guy".
