Please Help! My Macbook won't Power up after I cancelled an update!

I was installing updates on my macbook when i accidentally pressed the power off button. Now everytime I try to turn it on, a screen appears and says, "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." I have done both and nothing has worked! I have tried to take the battery ou and press for 10 seconds and everything in the book...I dont know what else to do! I have had this macbook for less than a month! Please help!

Take your original DVD installation disk that came with your MacBook and use that to boot your system (turn your system off, GENTLY insert the DVD until you feel a little resistance and then press the power button, then make certain that the DVD has been taken fully into the slot and immediately after that hold down on the "c" key so that the system boots from the DVD) . Once you reach the install screen look for the Utilities menu and select the Disk Utility from that menu. Once you enter the Disk Utility try a verify disk operation and if that reports errors then attempt a repair disk operation. After this, do a verify permissions (from within the Disk Utility) and repair those if needed. After this quit the Disk Utility and when you return to the installer screen quit the installer while holding down on the mouse button (or trackpad button), the latter will cause the DVD to be ejected and the system will again attempt to boot from the internal hard drive.
If after these operations you still can't boot from your hard drive then you will probably have to do an archive and install using your original installation DVD.

Ok so I'll go through EXACTLY what has happened to my laptop in the past day.. please note that the laptop was NEVER moved from the desk while this has all happened. Also a couple other things you should know.. I had Applecare, but 6 months ago when i sent it in to replace the harddrive -- they said they found some water damage, and it would cost $700 to replace... so i just put in the harddrive myself for $50, and it has worked fine since... So I'm pretty sure I can't turn to Applecare anymore...
    Alright...
    Yesterday
One of my memory sticks went bad on me... (i had 2- 1gig sticks.) I took the bad one out, and the computer seemed to run fine on the single stick of memory.
    Last night
I started to install leopard as an update over 10.4, seemed to work fine, though it was slow -- and finally i got to the leopard installation complete thing (please reboot the computer)... so I did...
It starts loading up... shows the mac symbol with the loading circle thing... but wait, Oh ****, i was probally was supposed to take out the cd... So i turn off the macbook by holding down the power button... and I eject the cd, and then try to start it up...
    Not loading... ****.
So after some mulling i decide, alright -- i'll reinstall again...
I boot to the cd drive, choose my options, start the install, and go to sleep..
    This Morning
I wake up.. the install hasn't moved at all... It's still at the same place where i left it..
****... so again I manually shut it off, and try and restart to boot from the CD again..
    NO GO....
If I hold down C to boot from DVD
The computer attempts to read the disk.. CD drive seems to power down.. then try again.. Then it ejects the cd, and goes to the Apple logo with the spinning circle, but never loads. I've tried it with My old 10.4 disk, and the new leopard disk. Same result on both. neither disk seems scratched either.
If I just boot up regular
It goes to the apple logo with spinning circle.
    SOOOO...
I tried resetting the PMU, and PRAM
Is it likely that it is my superdrive gone bad, at a horrible time? If so I guess i'll just buy one on eBay and replace it myself. Is there any way to test it?
Could there by another problem wrong with it?
Please help me troubleshoot this! I'd be very appreciative -- I'm a poor college Computer science student that needs his computer to work for his classes.
    Thanks All!

Yes. You need the two RAM modules, or at the very least the remaining one RAM module must be for sure securely seated. If not securely seated with only one module, the result is as you've seen.
i was probally was supposed to take out the cd...
No, not necessary. After that, the very delayed loading was totally normal, sounds as if you were just impatient.

Oh, and check the AppleCare agreement, as to the best of my recollection, you can should be able to get a refund, pro-rated for time left.
Check how full your hard drive is now. I'm not clear if you've yet erased your HD or how many systems you've installed - if not erased perhaps it's full up.
A PRAM reset should allow you to boot from the install disc, access the Install Discs's System Profiler, and see what things look like. Also, you should be able to boot to the Apple Hardware Test - while you do need a working optical drive to do so, you don't need any hard drive at all, and it doesn't sound like either one has been lost.

  • Panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff800065cbd24): PLEASE HELP, my macbook won't start up! :(

    Hi there,
this morning my macbook was not blocked and i forced to shut down, then i cannot start up and i keep on getting this screen that i attach. I tried to boot in safe mode but it won't let me, also make a hardware cheek and won't let me either, please help me , i can't work with out my computer
    THANKS!

If you want to preserve the data on the startup drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive or other storage device to hold the data.
    1. Start up from the Recovery partition, from Internet Recovery, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    2. If Method 1 fails because of disk errors, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    3. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    4. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Please Help, My macbook won't stay connected to internet idk what to do

Hello, i just bought my macbook pro. Its a Mac OS X ver. 10.5.7 with a 2.26GHz processor.
    I have a Netgear 54mbps wireless router WGR614 v8 and a Motorola SB5100 SURFboard Cable modem.
Now the problem im having is with the internet connection with my mac. I live in Virginia and It was working before i went on vacation to tennessee which is an hour behind virginia. It was able to connect with no problems. It was also connecting fine in tennessee as well. But when i came back to Virginia, the mac would connect to my router or atleast say its connected but i can't use the internet at all. I would load either firefox, safari, or itunes store and the page would begin to load and then stop loading in the middle. As if it was freezing, dropping the connection or something. When i look through the airport connectivity, it would stay connected to my router with still no access to the internet. I also checked to make sure i was in the correct time zone with my mac and it was correct.I have a wii, xbox, original pc that are connected to router that operate perfectly. its just my macbook wont connect wirelessly when it used to before i went to tennesse and took it with me. Some of the error messages that i get when i try to use the internet via macbook now are "can't open page because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection" but then minutes later it would connect again, then internet would work. But shortly after it would stop working for a while. and the process continues like a cycle. PLEASE HELP BECAUSE IM CLUELESS. i've looked at many forums but no solution.

I've been having the same problem for the last 2 weeks, because it's a macbook air it's completely useless!
I spent a tenner on a usb/ethernet cable but it's not Mac Compatable, to buy an official one is going to cost ...god knows. But this machine comes with no superdrive, no ethernet, no adapter for an ethernet. The least they can do is make sure the wifi works! I think I upgraded the OS, but I can't be sure if that coincided with the crap internet speeds.
I'm really angry now, I don't have the time to take it down to shop, and looking on the internet it appears this is really common problem. It's a beautiful machine, but if I knew it was going to be this much hassle I wouldn't have bothered. This is the first and last time I will buy a mac.

  • HELP!!! Macbook won't recognize SSD After crash during Software Update!

Hello today an update was available, and my macbook asked me to install and restart, so I restarted my macbook, and the installation began. After an hour and a half, the update was still installing, and all of a sudden my power went out. Since I never have my battery plugged in my macbook when I have it plugged into the charger the macbook turned off in the middle of the update. Now When I try to turn my macbook on it boots on a white screen for a minute or so and then a folder with a "?" appears and begins to flash.
i tried inserting a Snow Leopard install cd into my macbook to reinstall my OS, but "disk utility" wouldn't even recognize my SSD! I have since swapped it out with my old hard drive and everything works fine...but how do I get my Solid-State drive to become recognized again?
Any help would be great! Thanks! Also my macbook specs are below in case if anyone needs them for whatever reason.

I'll try that....do you know if they charge anything for that? Thanks!

  • MacBook won't start up after installing iTunes 8 & updates ...??

My MacBook is a little more than a year old (read, no longer under warranty ...) and it's currently in a coma.
Nothing was out of the ordinary prior to the MacBook going weird - I downloaded a bunch of photos from my camera, ejected a USB drive and immediately after that I tried to launch iPhoto - it froze and I tried to force quit (several times) without success. I then pressed the power button, and that was the last time I saw my desktop.
Whenever I press the power button to try to turn it on, the Apple logo comes on (but no spinning wheelie) and then a grey screen comes up saying my MacBook needs to be restarted - either press the power button for a few seconds or try the reset button (which is where???).
Anyway, for the next two and a half hours, I tried everything I could find on the forums to revive my MacBook. I did the PRAM thing, pulled out the battery, did the Cmd+S/V gig (that went no where either, just got stuck on a black screen with lots of words after a while), got my old OS X install disc out (couldn't find the Leopard at 2:30AM ...) ran through the whole repair thing ... Point is, I'm still looking at the screen that's telling me to restart my computer.
I've gone through the forums here and it seems like some people with year-old'ish MacBooks who have installed iTunes 8 as well as the latest software updates seem to have the same problem. Now I know it's my fault I didn't backup my data so I can't just wipe the HDD and hope for the best. If I knew installing iTunes 8 would cause this, I wouldn't have bought the new iPod Touch 32GB, which requires the iTunes 8 to work. And I usually install all the updates Apple tells me to install ... maybe this is what you get for being gullible.
Anyway, I think I'm going to have to take it to a service centre, who has quoted me at least $75 to $250 to have the thing "diagnosed", let alone fixed.
How do I know if I broke the MacBook or iTunes & the software updates did? Or are MacBooks really pre-programmed to die after the one year warranty expires ......?? Eitherway, I'm really put off by Apple right now.

    Another victim!
Try booting up from the install disc (insert and hold down C), then run disk utility and and check your drive for errors, and then if possible try fixing them.
This didn't work for me, however after deleting my hard drive and repeating the above procedure no errors were found, and after a reinstallation of OSX my computer is working although extremely slow.
As for recovering your data I'm not sure. So far I haven't heard of it being done, although I have heard of new hard drives needing to be purchased.
Good luck. And spread the word!

  • Please help, my macbook pro won't boot

    Hey there, i need help
My macbook pro wont start, so after i press the power button, the apple logo will pop out with a rotating circle below the logo, and there's also a bar below, but in my case that bar will only run til almost complete (there's only about 0.1cm left) and it'll suddenly go off
I've tried to use Safe Mode boot and fsck -fy, they didn't work.
I've also tried to enter the Disk Utility and repair the hd, but it keeps on experiencing error, it says "Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk ...." for both the TOSHIBA and Macintosh HD
From what i remember i haven't ever used the Time Machine backup before
How do i fix this without losing my files? I have bunch of important projects there and i need to finish them soon
    Please help, thank you

  • Please help, my macbook pro is super hot, how can i fix it.

please help, my macbook pro is super hot, how can i fix it.

I am guessing you have just bought a new macbook pro,  I did the same thing when I first unpacked mine.
You will get asked if you are using it on your lap, because they think that you are blocking the vents.
the macbook pro will get really hot around the E R T and F keys and  I O P and L keys and the metal strip between the keyboard and the screen.
I have found the graphics accelerator heats the machine up more than the actualy processor.
you should report it to apple care before your 90 days is up, they may or may not send you to a genius booking.  Just incase you have issues with your machine later due to the heat buildup early on, that way they have a log of the problem.
My macbook pro runs alot cooler than it did when i first got it, but still gets hot on heavy usage
You shouldnt really worry unless it shuts itself down as then you have some serious problems, when it gets hot u should be able to hear the fans running and it will prolly keep the temp aroun 101-104 c under heavy load.   If you can't hear the fans, shut it down and take it back to the store.
    Hope this helps you

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

I just wanted to follow this up by saying that you were entirely correct in your diagnosis of the situation.  My computer did have the faulty part you linked to.  I brought my laptop in and specifically told them to run that test, had it fail and then argued with the person at the genius bar and the manager.  Eventually they offered to have it sent out and have everything replaced for free of charge.  They did so mainly because I had complained about graphical issues almost every other time I had come in with problems and no one ran the test.  They should have caught this problem during my warranty, but they didn't, even though I mentioned the problem.
Anyhow, after having the part replaced, I haven't had my computer crash a single time since, or had many of the issues mentioned above.  I've never had this experience before.  Even brand new, I got occasional crashes.  Hopefully this new trend continues.
I do find that web browsing is still incredibly slow.  Web browsers just chug along at a slow pace, even though I have great internet speed.  Maybe I'll try just deleting my web browsers and reinstalling them...
Anyhow, thank you for your help and knowledge Clinton.

To open your domain file in Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with AppleScript Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script"/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"
    delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain. Note:  you may have to Control (right) - click on the app after uncompressing and select Open due to the Sandboxing feature of OS X.  If you have problems with the app create your own with AppleScript Editor.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible in Lion or Mt. Lion enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Aluminium iMac won't power up after shutdown

    Hello All,
I have bought a 20" aluminium iMac for my parents a couple of weeks ago. It went extremely well in the first few days, but I got the complaint from my parents that it cannot power up after the proper shutdown.
It is very strange that it won't power up after it has been shutdown for a couple of hours, unless I unplug the power cord and plug it back in after a minute or so (reset the SMC)
Oppositely, I can power it up normally right after it has been shut down for a few minutes. But never overnight.
I have tried everything I know about like reset SMC and PRAM, as well as running apple diagnostic. Symptom still persist (though the diagnostic says nothing wrong with my hardware)
Is there anyone facing the same problem as me ?
    Thanks
    Jimmy

    Thanks Guys.
I haven't called Applecare yet. However, I have reinstall the system and done a software update EXCEPT the latest imac software update v1.1 released recently.
See if anything good happen tomorrow and will let you guys know
by the way, it's really great that Mac retains everything including the Apps and Desktop setting after the reinstallation......... nothing has to reinstall except the OS itself
