PLEASE HELP-my Powerbook G4 won't start up!

I have no idea what happened to it. I took it to Hungary where I used it for a year. Everything was fine until I moved back home.
Now, when I try to turn it on, it beeps 3X, the sleep light on the front is constantly on, blinking 4X occasionally, the screen is black, and nothing else happens.
The only thing I did with it was move it around a bit since security at London Heathrow was a disaster. What’s the matter with it? Thanks for any help!

Same exact thing happened to me. After about an hour on the phone with Apple Care (they had me reset the PMU and PRAM, but did not instruct me to reset the RAM card), I was told that it might be that the RAM card is defective, so I should try having it replaced. I had it replaced by a certified apple technician (my 512 MB card was removed and replaced with a 128 MB card that I had not been using), and I was told that it was working again. When I brought it home, it worked for a few minutes, then the computer froze completely and would not respond. I had to do a force quit and restart, and when it started up the same thing happened all over again with the black screen followed by 3 beeping sounds and a blinking activity light (4x repeatedly).
I was told by Apple that if changing the RAM card did not solve the problem, it may have something to do with the logic board. I hope this is not the case, and I will have to wait until Tuesday to speak with the technician who did the original RAM card replacement.
I have not tried doing the steps recommended in the first reply in the order that was recommended. I wonder if I should try that on my own to see if that will help, or if it is better to wait and see what the technician recommends?? I would rather not have to wait til tuesday though!

  • PleaSE HELP! Ibook G4 won't start up!

    Hi,
I am a stay at home mom and my husband is a total mac geek, but I am ready to kill him right now. He has always taken care of any probs etc, but a few weeks ago my ibook g4 was left on, shut though so it was sleeping for a few days while I was away. I can't remember if it was charging or not. Now when I restart it that day, I go from the ding to gray with the earth blinking in a box, to a folder with a blinking ? to a folder blinking with the mac face thingy to the gray apple and turny thing while the fan is running and that is it. I did not know that I should've been backing things up and all of the digital pics of our wedding and everything from my son's birth until he is two is on there and I don't want to lose those pics. My husband managed to lose the start up and other discs that came with it. I have some discs from my old g3 ibook if any of those would help, please let me know. I am using my husband's powerbook g4 right now, and we also have those disks. He is so meticulious about his discs, I am wondering if we never got them. We have an Apple hardware test for his power book and one for the g3 ibook, and we have mac OS 10X v 10.2 install discs one and two. We cannot afford a new laptop, and he uses his for work. My old g3 is operable too. Thanks for any advice.

I am having a similar problem, but worse. The laptop sudddenlly began responding extremely slowly to commands (5 minutes or longer), so I opened up Disk Utililty and did "repair permissions". The program froze within 1 minute of start up. I restarted with Tiger Install Disk>disk utility>repair disk and within minutes, in red appears the line "Keys out of order". It then starts the "rebuilding of catalog b tree" and within minutes of that, the following error message appears "HD couldn't be repaired underlying task reported failure on exit". I tried a couple of more times, and still got the same message. Now, I can't even boot up the computer. I get the grey screen and Apple logo and the turning "fan" and then within minutes it just turns itself off. Until May, the computer was under warranty but it spent a couple of months in Apple repair in February waiting for a new logicboard and hard drive. I'll take it back to my Apple repair place and see what they can do for me again. I hope that with the new hard drive, Apple will extend my Applecare. Now my problem is this: My daughter has irreplaceable photos and music that I wasn't able to transfer to our external drive before this all happened ( know...I tell her all the time to back up, but she never listens). I tried the use the firewire target disk mode and even though the firewire symbol shows up on the "target computer" (the iBook), the iBook HD doesn't show up on the "host" computer (a G4iMac) desktop. I've checked the support docs to see what could be the problem, and see that m should have Firewire 2.3 installed on my iMac, but all I get when I do the system profiler is to see that firewire bus is 400mb/ps but no extension or application for Firewire 2.3. When I tried to download it off from Apple, my computer starts up the Classic Operating system, so that can't be right. No other fixes mentioned so that I can pull off the files I need to save from the iBook. Can you help me out?

  • Please help...Macbook won't start up!

    All,
I need help with my Macbook because it won't turn on. A few nights ago it was shut down, but before completely turning off it stuck on a grey/white screen. The keys were unresponsive and only gave the "bell" sound when pressed. I turned it off by keeping the power button depressed.
Upon trying to switch it on last night, it loads up withthe apple symbol and the pinwheel but then goes to a grey screen reading "You need to restart your machine. Press and hold the power button or press the reset button". I tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM which did nothing.
I don't know much about Mac's but I am able to start it in safe mode, but what comes up doesn't mean a lot to me. it then stops and stalls whilst still with the black screen and white writing...?
Will I have to start with the disk utility etc?
Please, all advice will be very helpful!
    Thanks

    Hi
The "You need to restart your computer" message indicates a kernel panic, which often points to a hardware fault (often a RAM fault).
Can you reboot the computer from the original installation disk? (Start the computer, insert the disk, force-reboot it again, hold down the C key. If that doesn't work, reboot and hold down the Option key, and then choose the DVD as a startup source. If it loads to the installation screen, try running DIsk Utility from the Utilities menu - run Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. Let us know if you see any errors (from the Repair Disk routine).
Have you upgraded the RAM at all? If so, try removing the new RAM and leaving (or replacing with) the old RAM.
Is your Macbook still under warranty?
Do you have backups of your files?
    Matt

PowerBook G4 - Won't Start Up - 3 Strange Beeps then just LED flashes and sudden death - black screen.
Prior that the powerbook also couldn't start but I could see the Apple logo, so via fire-wire (holding T at start up) I backed up the hard disk.
Check via DiskToolPro the structure, defragmented. Via DiskWarrior rebuild the directory
and finally not been able to access the drive I reformatted the drive via fire-wire drive.
Re-started the powerbook holding C to boot up from DVD - nothing
Re-started again and it give me one long beep and black screen. An indication that my 1gig RAM is bad or gone (?) and the DVD is stuck inside.
Bought new one 1 gig, installed it and now I'm getting only three beeps.
I tried all, changed the slots several times and nothing.
    I tried more as:
c -- to boot from CD (again while the DVD is still inside and I cannot get it out)
cmd-opt-p-r -- to Zap the PRAM,
cmd-opt-n-v -- to clear NV RAM,
cmd-opt-o-f -- to boot into open firmware … and nothing. The DVD is in and I have
black screen with three beeps and flashing LED.
Do I have to replace the Logic Board?   (Anyone has a spare one ?)
But it is the faulty Logic board?
Could anyone help me out? Please.
I'm retired and I cannot afford a new laptop - and this powerbook was a great, great horse for me until that horrible set of three beeps.
Thank you in advance for any advice and help.

But it is the faulty Logic board?
There was a known issue with LBs in 15-inch PowerBooks with 1.5 and 1.67Ghz processors in which one RAM slot would fail. There once was a repair extension program that fixed the problem at no cost, but it is long-expired.
The problem with seeking a used logic board for these models is that so many had their boards replaced that it increases the chances of the boards in the used/pulled markets having the same problem you have now. The replacement program also came close to exhausting the supply of new boards,
If it turns out to be a bad LB and you can't find a replacement, consider how used computer pricing works: A used computer is worth hugely more in parts than if bought as a working unit. I.E, you can probably find a working PowerBook that will cost less than the logic bard alone. It also possible to find a used MacBook Pro for less that a replacement LB.
If you tell us your approximate geographic location, we can see what's available nearby. I'm also retired, and and visiting my wife's family this week so have even more time than usual to help you search.

  • PowerBook G4 won't start up please help...

Hello everybody ho are you doing? Sorry for the long post I'm just in panic mode now because I can't live without my computer
Ok here's my problem, my powerbook g4 will not start up now. How did this happen? I was using safari and the the apple logo came up told me an update was available do I downloaded the update I believe it was for iPhoto, then I went to the apple button, restart. It took me to the point where you hear the tone and then gives the apple logo without the spining sign after about 3 seconds anoter screen come up reads "you need to restart your computer. Hold the power button for several seconds or press the restart button". This message is also in french and two other languages. There's also a logo in the background like a power button sign.

Because replacing the DC-In board is such a pain, be sure to test with another battery before tackling the board replacement.
Yes, the high- and low-res 1.67s use different PRAM batteries:
    Low-res PRAM battery
    High-res PRAM battery
Powerbook PRAM batteries are rechargeable. Yours is drained now because it isn't being recharged, but that doesn't mean it won't take a charge again when you get your charging system working properly. If I were you, I'd return the one you bought immediately if you can get a full refund or credit for doing so. If a full credit or refund isn't available, then return it only if it's the wrong one and useless to you. If you bought the right one, keep it, but try to diagnose the actual cause of your problem ASAP so that if you don't need a new PRAM battery, you'll still have a chance to return the one you bought before it's too late, at least for a partial credit.

  • HELP PLEASE!!! Computer won't start up

    Help Please!
My computer won't start up, when I click the start up button the light comes only once, sounds click (once) and that's it, no power up.
Because of the age, I knew that the battery could be the reason, so I ordered the exact same battery and replaced it today (following the instructions very carefully). Nothing changed. Then I read about the button for resetting the power management (the one below the ram memory), did that too...and nothing.
I read the manual, it talks about recently installed components (which I have not) and explains the meaning of the numbers of blinks the power light makes with this type of failure, 2 blinks=ram memory, 3 blinks...4 blinks..more than 5 blinks= take it to service.
If somebody could please help me, I would really appreciate
    All the best,
    Veronica

I had similar problems with my G5 2ghz dual PPC. Mine would turn on, sometimes the startup chime would sound, sometimes not. The fans would run and continue to run faster and faster until I shut it off.
The red light comes on by the way, when the internal plastic shield is not installed or seated correctly.
Anyway, I determined after fooling with the machine for several hours that the symptoms pointed to the video card so, on a hunch, I grabbed a hair drier, pulled the video card and warmed up the video card with the drier. Then reinstalled the video card, hooked up the monitor and hit the power button. Bingo, the machine booted normally. BUT, it would intermittently hang or act odd while running so, I ordered a replacement video card. Installed it and the problem never returned. Sadly someone stole the machine last month but it was in perfect working order at the time:(

  • Powerbook G4 won't start up

OK, I know others have had a similar issue but I haven't been able to find a solution to this and desperately need some help. My Powerbook G4 with Leopard seems to be dead and I haven't backed it up recently (yes. I know). Yesterday I installed the latest security update, this seemed to go fine other than causing an apparent problem with spell checker. Then I tried to shut it down in the usual way and it didn't work, just stuck on the desktop screen with the whirly grey wheel. After an hour I gave up and held down the power button. Now of course it won't start up, just gives me a grey screen and the grey wheel again. I have inserted the Leopard install disk and used disk utility to repair the hard drive. It said it "appears to be OK". It still won't start though. And I can't even eject the install disk now. Can anyone help??????

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First off, this is how to eject:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2179
If this doesn't work, your machine may need a new clock battery from an authorized service center.
Furthermore, you will need to recover your data once you are able to boot off the optical drive, either using Target Disk Mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
    Or Startup Manager:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310
with a data recovery program such as Prosoft Data Rescue II, Subrosasoft Filesalvage, or Boomerang, Boomerang. These must be purchased from an Apple software reseller.
Once your data is recovered, we can try to repair the hard drive with Alsoft Disk Warrior.
If that doesn't work, you may need to replace your hard drive.
In the future never install new software without backing your data*:

  • Powerbook G4 won't start up past grey screen

Hello. I'm a little worried about my mac.
It doesn't start up past the grey apple screen. I hear the start up sound, and I hear the hard disk start spinning, but after a while the only thing I hear is the fans. The longest I've let it try was about an hour, and still nothing. I've tried resetting the PRAM and resetting the PMU. I don't have the OS 10.5 install disc with me at the moment, so I can't use that.
Some events that may have led up to the problem:
I installed the latest software update last night. Installation was sucessful, and I restarted. Everything was fine on restart, so I put the computer to sleep for the night. Today when I woke it up, one of the toolbars in the Finder was open (probably not a problem, but unusual). Everything seemed fine and then I opened Text Edit. It was bouncing in the dock for about a minute, so I tried to force quit, and after a while it eventually stopped bouncing. Then I tried a restart, and I got a message saying it was unsuccessful because Text Edit failed to quit, but there was no marker under it in the dock. Tried again, and I ended up having to do a ctrl-command-power. After that, I haven't been able to get past the grey start up screen.
    PLEASE HELP Thanks!

If that's the case, then what I would do next is to use TDM to clone the contents of your problem drive onto an external FireWire drive using either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to make sure you have a backup of everything. Once done make sure you test the backup by restarting from the external drive.
Next thing I would do is run DiskWarrior (sometimes it can be a directory issue that might be causing problems) to check that everything is still OK on the drive. It might be worth running DW on the external backup whilst you are at it. If DW finds nothing wrong then I would consider reformatting the drive and installing a fresh copy of OS X onto it to test if everything works fine. On the other hand if DW finds problems, it might be able to fix them so that you can restart properly.
If after all that everything works then you can try cloning everything back from the external drive onto the PowerBook's internal drive.

For some reason my phone turns on, and then the screen showing "Blackberry" with the loading bar appears, but it gets about 3 quarters of the way then flashes off then starts to repeat the same process. I am lost on what to do, even after reading sevral solutions that haven't worked!

However, there's no way for anyone to tell you which OS to download for your model BB. If your carrier supports multiple, then you should download the one running on your BB. But, in it's current condition, you have no way to tell now -- only if you already knew before this all happened could you possibly know now. So, I'd suggest going with the most recent version. Your BB, in it's current state, is pretty much toast anyway (including, btw, all of your data...hopefully you've been backing up regularly).

  • Help!  G4 iBook won't start up

I had to shut down and restart my iBook two or three times in succession. On the final time, the iBook began to start up, but then there was a 'click' and it shut down completely. Now I can't get it to start up at all, when I press the start up button nothing at all happens. The battery is fully charged, I have tried it running off the mains, and have also tried holding down Shift etc. I can't start it up from the CD either, as it won't pull the CD in.

  • Please help! My CS6 won't open and Adobe Application Manager keeps popping up to renew CS Cloud subscription.

    Hi there.
I recently canceled my CS Cloud subscription about 3 weeks ago and went back to using CS6. I was using CS6 Creative Suite without a problem until 2 days ago. Now my CS6 programs (AI, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat) won't open. Instead the Adobe Application Manager keeps popping up to renew the subscription, see below insert.
I have chatted with Adobe customer support numerous times but when it comes to transferring me to their technical support, the chat mysteriously becomes unavailable. The only time the transfer went through, I was advised to remove CS6 Creative Suite using Cleaner Tool and reinstall, which I did but my CS6 still does not open and the AAM keeps popping up giving me the same message to renew the subscription. The AI/Photohop icons just keep bouncing up and down without opening while the AAM pops up.
What can I do to stop this annoying AAM from popping up and open my CS6? I just want my CS6 to open up again. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Please help!

  • Help, my macbook pro won't start anymore

    Hello all,
I have had some issues with my macbook pro lately:
A few weeks ago, my Macbook started freezing and making alarm sounds. I didn't do anything about it because it happened only a few times per week.
Suddenly it happened 4 or 5 times in a row, and after x times my Macbook wouldn't go past the grey start-up screen (Apple logo loading). So I was unable to login.
I solved the ''issue'' by erasing the disk. My Macbook worked again, but all data was gone. The freezing issue was gone as well.
But 2 days ago, it started.. again. And today, my Macbook suddenly crashed/shut down. Now, I am not even able to start my macbook. It doesn't show anything, if I press the power button, nothing happens.
I did a SMC reset, and my Macbook worked, but only for 15 minutes. It just happened again. Something is clearly wrong and I don't know what.
Sometimes, my Macbook instanly freezed when I connected the power cord. And I think the power cord is broken, last few days it barely charged the Macbook.
    Please help : (.
Stores close in 2 hours (9 PM), and I need to find a solution. What do I need to replace and buy?
    **PLEASE HELP**

    - The memory you are talking about, that's the same as RAM right?
    Yes.
It's unclear whether you did anything with the memory or not, but even if you didn't, even a Mac's originally installed RAM could fail and cause the exact symptoms you describe. To test memory you can use Apple Hardware Test, though only a report of a failure can be considered definitive.
Also, I checked my magsafe, and the 2 power connectors are a little bit curved/bent. I am planning on buying a new Magsafe + new RAM (memory?). I think that will fix it?
I don't know, but it's not a good idea to use a power adapter or a MagSafe connector that you know is damaged.
For a definitive diagnosis it would be best to take your Mac to an Apple Store for evaluation. Schedule an appointment. Bring your power adapter. Even if you have to purchase a new power adapter there, the price isn't very different than you are likely to find anywhere else. Counterfeit, non-Apple power adapters can be hazardous to you, your Mac, your property, or all three, so buy it from Apple.
Memory on the other hand is another story. You can purchase RAM guaranteed to work from one of two vendors known to support Macs - Crucial or OWC / MacSales - much cheaper than from Apple.

  • Please help!  i tunes won't display song list or artist ??

have 2 identical new computers and have installed itunes on both. One computer will open the cd automatically but does not display the artist and songs. The other computer automatically opens the cd and displays both the titles and artist. I must have a setting wrong on my one computer somewhere but have no idea where to look. I have un installed and re installed i tunes a few times but the settings never change. I have put both as my default player but still no luck. Please help!

Thanx for responding vdub, I deleted I tunes because I made the mistake of importing all of my music for a second time after adding all of my music to my new external hard drive and what happened, was, that created duplicates of almost all of my files and triples and quads of a whole lot of them. After spending 2 days trying to manually delete the duplicates and barely putting a dent in it, I decide it would be easier to just delete everything and just start over, well apparently that was a bad idea because now I've been trying to reinstall itunes for about a week with no success. Also retrieving it from the recycle bin is not an option because, of course, I emptied the bin. I'm lost,....
