PLEASE HELP!- New internal hard drive not recognizing

I have a MacBook pro unibody, purchased October 2008, 250 GB, 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM. I bought a new hard drove from OWC, which is 750 GB. I followed all I strychnine from their website by installing osx again on the new drive, and transferrin data and updating the programs. when I checked the hard drive to see if the files were all there, they were. but once I installed in in the MacBook, and turned on, a blue screen with a flashing blue folder and a white question mark popped up. what did I do wrong???

Restart holding down the Option key, the system may not know the new drive is your start-up drive. Select the drive and once OS X is up go to System Preferences-Startup Disk and choose the internal drive.
If it still doesn't start then you made an error somewhere. The correct process would be to put the new drive in an enclosure and format it first to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then using using SuperDuper or CCC clone your old drive to the new drive, once that has been done swap the drives and you should be done.

I really need your help. I tried to upgrade my internal 120gb drive to a Western Digital wd2500bevs. But when I start my Macbook with the Leopard DVD neither the System Profiler nor the Disk Utilities Program recognize the drive for a possible installation. When I reinstall the old drive everything is back to normal and works perfectly.
This is what I already tried to fix the problem:
I took the drive into an external casing => it was recognized immediately
I then formatted it => no change after installing it into the Macbook again.
I cloned my system with CCC on the WD and then installed it => no system found.
I have another disk of this kind but the same problem and another 160gb Toshiba disk which is not recognized as well.
Please help me! I couldn't find help in German discussions yet so I hope anyone of you guys can help me.

You say the drive is "recognized" but your original post stated it was not present in Disk Utility. I'm puzzled. Have you attempted to partition and format the drive?
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

Why in my new internal hard drive not recognized by boot disk?

My OS HD died and I am replacing it with a Seagate 500 GB, 7200rpm 6gb/s drive. I am booting from snow leopard disk on my dual core, Intel 3 GHz 2007 Mac pro. the set up wind sees my other data disks (internal HD2 with my data, and two external fire wire drives but not the new disk. I want to load the OS onto the new disk...that was my goal. Any ideas?

Most brand new drives out of the box appear as "Unformatted" or Windows formatted. If you want to place Mac OS X on a drive, you need to erase it and create a GUID partition Map and a Mac OS X Extended, journaled Volume. (It is not difficult, those are the defaults).

New internal hard drive not recognized

I'm trying to use internal drive to back up files, but the drive isn't mounting on the desktop, including in disc utility. I do get a blue light on the front of the tray, as if it's reading (or trying to read) the drive. But it stays blue, and I've had it in there for a couple days, hoping was perhaps taking its time recognizing it. I've tried both slots in the server to no avail. Any ideas?
The server is Mac OS X v10.4.11
The drive is a WD 2TB Caviar Sata 3 64MB 3.5 in

IMac G5 Internal Hard Drive Not Recognized

I shut down my iMac G5 with the power button and not through the typical shutdown procedure once and then when it booted up it would not get past the gray screen. I eventually used the Leopard DVD to try to boot it and was able to get to disk utility to look at the drive. I tried to repair the drive but then the machine froze and I had to restart once more. Now the internal hard drive isn't recognized or seen at all. I actually switched out the SATA hard drive with another spare I had and that was not recognized either. I can get the mac to recognize the installation DVD still so I know my computer still functions properly but I just need it to recognize the drive now. Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this?

Have you access to DiskWarrior or TechToolPro? Either of those might fix your problem otherwise, try booting from the Apple Hardware Test on your install disc and see what it says.

New internal hard drive not seen in disk utility

I replaced my hard drive with a western digital black edition but when I use it as an internal it is not seen by the disk utility.
I have installed and booked from the new drive using USB so it doesn't seem faulty.
When I use the old drive as an internal it works so I don't know what's going wrong.
I have had a look at similar problems but nothing I have tried has helped.

It may be the internal connecting cable that is the problem. If you can install the new HDD in an enclosure, connect it to the MBP, then see if you recognize it using the OSX installation disk. If so, the internal connector should be replaced.

Installed new internal hard drive, not working

Well, did you reinstall the operating system? If not, yes, you're going to get a blinking question mark, because the Mac doesn't have a system to boot from! You need to use your Mac's installation DVD or a newer retail version of OS X to either install a new clean system, or recover from any Time Machine backup you may have.

My hard drive on my macbook pro is done for it's 3 years old and I am getting the beach ball constantly, with loads of page outs. I can't afford a SSD so other than that whats the fastest drive I can get? I am guessing a 1TB 7200? Can anyone recomend any? These are the ones I found so far, any thoughts/ advice would be really apreciated.

My personal experience is as follows. I initially installed 1 TB HGST 5400 rpm HDDs and then were replaced by 1 TB HGST 7200 rpm HDDs. Both performed satisfactorily.
Currently I have 1 TB Seagate SSHDs (Hybrid) in my MBPs and they have reduced the boot and shutdown times by over 50%. They are also satisfactory.
Note that there will be cheerleaders and detractors for all brands of HDDs. I merely report my empirical results.

External hard drive not recognized on new macbook

we have an external harddrive that we used as the time machine for our previous imac. we just bought a macbook pro, and the harddrive is not recognized and does not show up on the sidebar. it is however shows up on disk utility but i dont know what to do with it/how to get files from my old time machine. please help! thanks

The hard drive will not show up on the sidebar or desktop unless Finder preferences are set to do that:
In Finder's General preference section, make sure "External disks" is checked in the list of things to show on the desktop if you want to see them there.
Likewise, in Finder's Sidebar preference section, make sure "External disks" is checked in the "DEVICES" section to see them automatically appear on the sidebar.
But you don't need to do either for the MBP to recognize the drive, or to get files from its Time Machine backup set. To do that, you should use the Time Machine "Star Wars" interface. Pondini's FAQ's (already mentioned) tell you how to do that. Tip 17 is particularly relevant.

How do I backup to time machine with a new internal hard drive?

My Macbook Pro's hard drive got corrupted about a year ago so I had to get the hard drive completely replaced. However, I wanted to start backing up my data to time machine so if the same situation were to reoccur, I would be better prepared. For some reason Time Machine does not recognize the new internal hard drive of the computer as it is supposed to. Could someone please help? thank you in advanced

That error message is saying that it is attempting to setup a Time Capsule for Time Machine to backup your data on.
Do you have a Time Capsule?
Do you have an external Disk Drive?
You can do a backup to the internal disk drive. It is worthless to do that.

Need to buy new internal hard drive ~ suggestions of where to buy online?

My 3 year old Mac Mini needs a new internal hard drive. I'm trying to find one online, but when I go to macsales.com for instance, I can't figure out the item I should be buying that will work. I'm clueless.
Is there any online place anyone would suggest in particular?
And what do I look for? Will it say 'mac mini internal hard drive' and will I know it will work in my old mini? (not intel).
Does anyone know of a good place to take to have it installed in the Seattle area?

With a little experience, replacing the drive on a Mac mini would take a little less than an hour, so I suspect you're being quoted the standard minimum for the job by those two sources. Whether you take that up or do it yourself really depends on your level of confidence. Opening the mini is a daunting proposition since there's no clear way to do it, and the plastic creaks and clicks as it's being levered apart with the putty knives, but it's actually very simple to do. Once the top is off, it is a fairly simply process to get to the drive, remove it, fit a new one and then reassemble. The only common issue from doing this work is failing to reconnect the fan control cable (symptom of having forgotten it is that the fan runs continuously on start up).
I would suggest that if you have a flat, clear table, an hour to spare, two putty knives and a suitable screwdriver, you would likely find it a fairly easy job once you get started. Indeed, you might even think about increasing the system memory at the same time!
One thing I would suggest is that if you have a digital camera, once you have the top open, start taking pictures as you progress through the job. That will help overcome the 'where does this go?' syndrome, should it strike!
In terms of sources of drive, the reason Boece suggested OWC in the first reply is that they have already done the work of figuring out which drives are compatible and which are not. If you are in any doubt about which drive will work and which won't, it would make sense to source the drive from them, knowing it is suitable, than through another vendor where you may be less sure!

Best way to transfer data to new internal hard drive

I just got a new internal hard drive for my macbook and I'm trying to figure out the best way to transfer all the data from my old hd to the new one. Basically, I would just like to make an exact copy of my old hd and put it on the new larger one. Thanks for the help.

Yes. Use Carbon Copy Cloner with the sopurce and destination volumes reversed after installing the new drive.
Additionally do I need a bootable copy of OSX on my external HD to do the transfer?
Yes; the clone can act as this copy. If you copy everything with Carbon Copy Cloner, you will be told whether the drive will be bootable or not prior to the clone.

Questioning about Partitioning a new Internal Hard Drive

I just bought a new Internal Hard Drive, Western Digital Caviar, 500 GB. I am trying to Partition the Drive but, there is a pull down menu which I am not sure what to select.
On "Volume Scheme, I selected 1 Partition from the menu, BUT, what do I select on "Format"?
It gives me these options:
1. Mac OS Extended (journaled)
2. Mac OS Extended
3. Mac OS Extended (case sensitive, Journaled)
4. Mac OS Extended (case sensitive)
5. Mac OS Extended
Free-Space
I am not sure what to choose here, IF I have to chose anything. All I need is another HD where I will have music samples on it.
Any help would be appreciate it.

New internal hard drives, seems slow with Logic 8, how can i test

I just bought a new internal hard drive, but it seems subtley too slow!,
On a Logic 8 song i'm working on the tracks timing seems slightly off, it's kind of driving me crazy because at times it is subtle, and other times obvious.
and 2 other things, one is an iTunes playback stalled twice, and that's never happened before,
also, when working on a Word doc, the screen was not re-drawing properly. i had to repeatedly reisze the doc window to get it re-draw itself. this has never happened before either.
is there a way to test this new hard drive?,

There are though all the ones I've used, TechTool Pro, Disk Utility, Intech Speedtools, none were 'perfect' or as good as the vendor's own utility which runs on Windows.
But you might do something for us - include the drive make/model version, and, do a look up with Google and see if you get any helpful hits.
How you have your system setup, number of drives and organization of files, can also have an impact.
Off hand, WD Caviar 640GB is cheap and fast, or there are some 1TB drives that look good, too.
Drives do break in over a period of days or first week, and it can help to break in and torture, zero the entire drive, run media scan, use a benchmark utility to graph I/O over the full drive.
Check out Barefeats, they do a bit of drive testing benchnmarks and see what they use and results. Or Tom's Hardware.
