Please help. New Mac Air & Time Machine problems.
Recently I replaced my wife's MacBook with a brand new MacBook Air. We used an iomega model RPHD-TG external HD for Time Machine with FireWire on the old laptop.
However, since the Air does not have FireWire I am using the USB cable that came with it. It works fine when the Air is awake.
The problem is that whenever we put it to sleep then wake it we get this message every time:
"The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off." Then it proceeds to "repair" it then mount it.
Now, there is no on/off switch on this drive nor do we unplug it. Any ideas?
Open Energy Saver preferences. Look at the checkbox labeled, "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible." If it is checked then uncheck the box. See if that helps.
If your Iomega came with software to configure the drive for spindown when not in use, then disable that option.

I migrated info from a hard drive to a new mac under time machine. It says I have shared files, but I don't see the old info on the new machine. Where do I look for it ? How do I make the old backup the basis for my new macbook ?
The old OS was Mac X 10.5.8. I think the new one is 10.7.2 Lion.Have a read here How do I set up a new Mac from an old one, its backups, or a PC?

Re-associate new mac with Time Machine backup
I have got a new MacBook and I want to load it with a TM backup residing on a USB drive. I know this cannot be done unless hacking the terminal because TM associates the backup between MAC addresses. I have searched the web where I have learnt this fact and how to go about fixing it but I cannot get the commands to work for me. Can someone tell me what I do wrong?
My new computers name as in Sharing prefs is MyMacbook.
Putting this name into the line:
$ xattr -p com.apple.backupd.BackupMachineAddress MyMac
gives me "No such file" !!
PLEASE help!

It should be "From Time Machine or other disk." Do not select "From another Mac."
I get to a window showing me drives on my network but NOT the drive connected to the USB-port on which I have my TM backup
The display can be a bit misleading. If it shows a yellow or green icon, and the name of the computer and internal HD that was backed-up (not the disk it's on), those are your backups.
This drive has been checked and passed both by TechTools Pro 6.04 and DU and it shows on my desktop.
Do you mean Repair Disk (not permissions) via Disk Utility?
Are the backups full backups -- ie, with nothing major, like System files and Applications, excluded?
EDIT: If you don't get the prompt, you may be able to manually "inherit" the backups, per #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Migrating to new Mac using Time Machine
Hi,
I will be getting a new Mac soon and I want to take all of my apps with me in their current state so I will be using Time Machine to migrate to the new machine.
I was wondering what are the essential files that I need to transfer over so that all the apps stay in the same state as they were on my current Mac. (Without the need for me to re-enter licence codes and go hunting for libraries etc.)
The main applications this is a worry for are:
Photoshop CS4 (and its affiliated apps)
Aperture 2
iWork '09
various other applications that have licence codes attached to themit's more to do with the preferences being saved intact on my new Mac, I need to know what essential files to choose off my Time Machine backup when I Sync it with my new Mac. I don't want the whole drive migrated because it is full of rubbish I want to get rid of.
If you have any idea of what preferences and other library files are essential then that will be a great help. -
Please help new mac user is getting super frusturated with mail
I am trying to send a peice of mail to one of my friends but when i click send it says:The SMTP server “smtp.mac.com” rejected the password for user “PierceP”
Please re-enter your password, or cancel. But i type in my password and nothing changes. I even went into my preferences and changed the password but it still will not allow me to send mail. PLease help
PierceHi again. It seems like there is information people are looking for to help you that they don't have. It occurs to me that you have a new Mac and you perhaps have an Apple Store with a Genius Bar in your area. A great experience for you might be to visit one and let them setup your mail for you (for free) and debug, if there is a problem of any sort. You can make an advanced reservation at Apple Stores at http://www.apple.com/buy/. Select the nearest store and make reservation. If you haven't been in an Apple Store, you're in for a treat.

PLEASE HELP!! USE TIME MACHINE & RESTORED IMOVIE PROJECT CANNOT BE OPENED
Please HELP!!!! Imovie yesterday didnt save any of my project changes so I redid them today. And after I just closed Imovie again it did not save my changes from today. Thats 2 days of editing with no record of the changes
I use Time machine but I have never needed to restore anything. I have gone into time machine, found the file, hit restore and saved it on my desktop but I am not finding the file in imovie.
When I click on the file and select open in imovie it is not opening or if it is, it is not the file with the changes when it diverts me to imovie. So basically I can see the file in Time machine, I am restoring it to my computer but I cannot locate it in imovie with the changes. I can see the file on my desktop but i cant open it to view other than in imovie which ofcourse isnt showing the changes.

I am working from an external hard drive. Yesterday I had the prompt appear that I had no more disk space (on my computer) so today i deleted a bunch of things and didnt get that prompt. And in anycase i am working off an external.
Please help me!!! I need a saviour!!!Have you tried deleting iMovie's preference file?
Close iMovie and go to your Home folder(YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist
Drag this plist file to the Trash. Don't worrry; iMovie will create a new fresh one when you relaunch it.
Reopen iMovie and see if it works ok now.
By the way, if you have more than one iMovie version on your computer, be sure to trash the correct plist.
iMovie 6 is 'com.apple.imovie.plist' but iMovie 8 is 'com.apple.imovie7.plist' and I expect that iM9 would be 'imovie8.plist' If you find only the one plist and you have only one version of iM, just trash that one.
Post back if this does not help. -
Transfer iTunes to new Mac from Time Machine, then sync with iPhone

I just sold my old Macbook (everything was backed up with Time Machine) and bought a new Macbook Pro. Now I want to copy the iTunes library back. The problem is, even if I copy all the music, video, apps, iTunes U... from Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/... to the new Macbook, iTunes still thinks (rightfully) that it is a new machine. So if I plug my iPhone to it and try to sync, it will ask to *remove all my apps*, music, contacts... and resync again. That would probably *remove every user data* I have in those apps.
Do you have any solution?By any chance do you still have the old computer? If you do then copy /Home/Music/iTunes/ folder on the old computer to an external drive then transfer it to the new computer.
If you don't have the old computer then you have a little bit of a problem. Did you use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer your files from the TM backup? Is the username (account short name) on the new computer the same as on the old computer? I'm guessing "no" because you are getting the permissions errors. -
I'm having issues backing up a new Mac with time machine and time capsule.
I've been trying to backup an extra macbook to the time capsule via time machine but the two sparsebundles (for two other Mac's) were taking up too much room. I deleted a heap of old backups from one of the sparsebundles to create enough room. The time capsule was still showing up as nearly full so I tried the method Pondini (God rest his soul) describes to "compact" the sparsebundle. That didn't work (I got this message in terminal):
hdiutil: compact failed - Function not implemented
I've had many other issues which required hard resetting the time capsule twice. And since then my wife's Macbook is having trouble backing up. I'm beginning to think I should maybe get an external HD and move all existing backups from the time capsule to the external HD. Do a factory reset on the time capsule and start from scratch. I guess my question is, does this sound like the best solution and if I move all the old backups to an external HD, will they be accessible.Yes, the old backups if they are working now will also be able to work from archive on USB plugged into the TC or into the computer directly.
Then do an erase of the TC and start over.
TM is becoming less reliable with each new OS.. and so far Yosemite is proving the worst by a big margin.
Strongly recommend that it is time to use Carbon Copy Cloner or some other software.
I use both TM to a TC.. and CCC to local usb hard disk.. -
Migrating to new Mac via Time Machine: computers conflicting?
If I get a new Mac, and then during the Setup Assistant tell it to migrate from my Time Machine drive, will I have any conflicts with the old Mac? For example, will both computers have the same machine name? Will they be trying to write to the same Time Machine backup? I want to continue to use the old Mac, but want all my stuff on the new Mac, too.

Yes, but you can easily change one (or both) via +System Preferences > Sharing.+

No. Time Machine keeps track of which Mac is which by its +Ethernet Address,+ which is embedded in the hardware on the logic board.

Moving to new Mac with time machine

I'm purchasing a new mac pro soon and i'm wondering if using 'time machine' will enable me to transfer everything to the new mac, with everything 'in place' as it was on the old mac, in other words will i have to re-install my apps? (i certainly hope not)Yes. I was surprised how easy it was and how well it worked when I migrated from an eMac (PowerPC) to an Intel iMac a few weeks ago. You'll have an even easier time.
Just make sure to use Migration Assistant when you first power on your Mac; when it asks if you want to transfer data from another Mac. Don't click "no" or "later" and then proceed to start from scratch. Using Migration Assistant after your Mac has been set up could lead to a whole bunch of permissions issues. -
HELP! Mac Air, Wifi, Connecting Problem
My MBA suddenly have some problem connecting my WiFi at home, while my PC and Cellphone all doing fine. The problem is whenever I tried to connect internet with Air, Something like:"Another device on the network is uding your computer's IP address,try connecting again later. If you continue to have problems, change the IP address of this computer or the IP address of the other device. Contact the network administratot if you need more information." will pop out.
But actually, I did not have the mentioned "other devices" using the same IP.
Please help!Try assigning a static ip address. Is your wireless internet password protected? If not someone else could be using it. this can cause the issue.
your ip range may be 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.110 this would give you 10 possible ip addresses, 10 devices. (Normal for home use). -
Migrating to new Mac with Time Machine?
I just got an new 27" iMac. I used my Time Machine backup to copy everything from my old IMac. Everything appears to have been copied correctly. All of my photos, music, documents and Adobe CS4 applications run. I was really impressed by how easy this was. I expected to have to reinstall the Adobe apps but it went perfectly. I am going to run this for a few days to test to see if everything works. This leads me to my question:
Can I use the same Time Machine backup on this machine? Or will TM want to re-archive everything again?
I clicked on Time Machine and this menu popped up. See jpeg.

I was hoping to reuse this backup as though this is the same machine. Which button should I select? Reuse? I'd hate to ruin this archive by making the wrong choice. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello all,
I have just acquired a new MacBook which I want to set up completely fresh. The only data I really need to restore/copy to it, besides a few document folders, is the iTunes library from my existing iMac. The iTunes library has been backed up using time machine on the iMac (using a portable drive). I’ve heard it might be possible for me to plug the time machine backup into the new MacBook and then option-click the time machine icon in order to 'browse other backup disks' and then restore iTunes. Would this work and would all my devices still sync with iTunes? I’m just a bit nervous because apple has migration assistant and setup assistant for doing this sort of thing - I just really don’t want to use them because the only thing I want on my new MacBook from the whole of the time machine backup is literally the iTunes library. I don’t want to start restoring user accounts which you must do with the assistants.

On my macbook I can't click "enter time machine" which I'm guessing is because the time machine backup is for my old iMac (hence my comment about control clicking the menu bar).

Last Thursday i was working all night with my 2008 Mac Pro. Early in the morning went to shut down my computer and discovered that i had a "no video signal" in my Dell monitor. Tried to solve that but i couldnt solve it. So I did a force shut down with the button
During the evening when ive returned home i tried to start up my computer but nothing happened when I press the Power button but a "click" sound.
This computer always performed really well. But right now my computer is not doing anything -no power- but that sound ive mentined.
I want to know if my computer is going to work with a new power supply or is something even worse -hope not-
Thanks a lot for all your help in advance!!I have seen these symptoms before.
It could be a component like hard disk, video card or worse, power supply.
If you are getting a "click" sound what you want to do is see if the Mac can respond to a component missing.
Like hearing a heart beat through sound. Disconnecting components is a valid troubleshooting process.
Disconnect the following until you hear a chime:
1. All peripherals including display -- USB, FireWire, etc.
2. Video Card
3. Hard disk
4. RAM
If you hear a "heartbeat" add components back until it goes zombie again. Then at least you will know which thing needs replacing.
May also try zapping PRAM at boot: CMD-OPT-P-R
One time a MacPro was catatonic.
I booted to another drive with DiskWarrior. DW brought it back to life.
