Please help.  Optical drive won't take disc, imac won't boot up!

I installed Tiger 10.4.6 and it was working just fine, had done several restarts.
Then I put in an office for mac cd and it wouldn't boot up. I tried ejecting it wouldn't work. I finally got the disc out, but the computer wouldn't start.
I booted up in safe mode, i booted up in single user mode and did the fgsk thing. I got the I/0 error.
How can I fix this? I don't care if I lose everything on the computer, I just want it to work again.

Oh, that presents a problem. Try resetting the SMU.
Otherwise, I'm afraid you will need to take it in for repair.

  • Won't take discs and won't start

My iBook G4 is 1 year and 2 months old - unfortunately my warranty JUST ran out. I have never had a problem with my computer before....it was sleeping the other night and it woke me up because it was so loud. It was making wierd noises/crackling sounds. I forced a shut down. Now, when I start it up, it goes to the Apple screen with the wheel turning...and then the wheel just suddenly stops. And it all of a sudden won't take any CD's or DVD's, so I can't even install OS or run hardware tests.
I called Apple support...they think it might be the logic board but it' going to cost $700 for them to fix. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks!

Do you have access to another Mac with FireWire? If so, you may be able to run the Disk Utility from that computer on your iBook's hard drive since you can't use your CD drive on the iBook. You can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to access your iBook's hard drive from another Mac. If you can't startup in "target" mode, then it's more likely that your logic board is having trouble than your hard drive.

  • CD-RW/DVD-ROM drives reads and imports discs, but won't burn CD's

I'm working on my laptop and I can import material from discs, but I can't burn anything to CD. I've tried iTunes and buring from the finder and iPhoto and nothing works. I've tried iTunes the most and here is what usually happens: the disc begins to write and then partway through it gets spit out (after some thumping or whirring noise of some sort) and it says the disc is unusable or unreadable. I've tried several different kinds of discs and none of them work. I've also tried those discs on my G5 and they burn perfectly. On the rare occassion that a disc from iTunes burns all the way through, it ends up sounding really weird... kind of warbly I would said. Any help?

The best method for cleaning an optical drive that I know of is to purchase an optical drive lens cleaner (its a special disc that you insert into the drive and follow the instructions) at your local computer supply store.
One article I saw talks about lasers in optical drives just flat out dying over time -- but this doesn't sound like your situation since you can play, just not record, though maybe it's something to think about since you have had your 'Book for a while.
Finally, take a look at this Kbase article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=151900 It seems to suggest (albeit under OS X 10.3.x, but I doubt that matters) that the inability to record on an otherwise operable optical drive lies with the disc being dirty or not the type or brand suitable for your drive. I can't say I agree, totally, with that analysis, but I thought you ought to be aware it's out there.
Try the lens cleaner. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. There are many others.
    Good luck.

i tried to get the installation disc for the camcorder but mac wont' recognize it becaue it is windows based i guess.
i just bought the camcorder a few months ago and when my computer crashed thought i'm finally getting a mac...it's been a costly venture which has resulted in more frustration than before my pc.
now the things i want to use with my mac that i thought would be even simpler...are not even useable...
    help

That camera shoots H.264 in an .avi wrapper.
You will have to transfer the files via the Finder.
Get a free copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert them to QuickTime .mov using the H.264 codec if you are presumably editing in iMovie.
Note that your list of video codecs won't look like mine as I have Final Cut Pro, but H.264 is definitely an option for you.

  • I have a 2 year old MacBook Pro and the superdrive has stopped working, it won't take discs in as if there is one already inside but iTunes or the dvd player doesn't recognise that there is a disc inside and if there is it can't be ejected

I have a 2 year old MacBook Pro and the superdrive has stopped working, it won't take discs in as if there is one already inside but iTunes or the dvd player doesn't recognise that there is a disc inside and if there is it can't be ejected, i have tried shutting down and restartinf while holding down the trackpad, as recommended on some forums but that has done nothing
It might be a huge coincidence but the drive was working fine before i installed lion?

Installing Lion would not cause the superdrive to stop working.  Are you unsure as to whether or no a cd/dvd is inside?  Something may be broken inside and you should consider bringing it in for service.

  • Can an external optical drive be connected to an iMac?

I'm looking for and external optical drive to connect to an iMac using Mac OS X 10.5.7 (ONLY). If this is possible what are the options. Make, model...

Yes - check out OWC, they have a number of Mac-specific optical drives.
You can also buy a compatible internal drive (eg, the Pioneer DVR series) and an external 5.25" case and roll your own.

  • Optical Disc Drive won't take discs

I took my Macbook into the Apple Store last week, because the processor failed. I just got it back from being repaired yesterday, and all seemed fine when I wanted to play The Sims 3 this evening and my macbook wouldn't even take the disc when I tried to put it in. It just sits there about most of the way in, and when I try to push the rest it in, there's no noises and nothing grabbing it, just sort of a spring trying to push it back out to me.
Did someone forget to put something back when they repaired it? Because it was working just fine before. I've tried SMC and PRAM resets, nothing. Does this mean I have to make another trip to the Apple Store?

Try holding down the eject button while booting up the computer.
Once it has booted up fully try inserting a disc again.
If this doesn't resolve it, and you have tried an SMC reset, and the other steps outlined at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801 under the "drive doesn't accpet discs" sub-heading, then take it back to trhe dealer.
    Cheers

  • Please Help - Hard Drive Gone - Won't Mount - No AppleCare...

    Hi guys,
    I'm in trouble here..
I was loading a bunch of photos from an external drive to iPhoto and my iMac froze up for a long time.
    I couldn't do anything at all - so I finally force-powered down.
When I powered back up - My Hard Drive was gone and Finder will not open.
Other applications in my dock such as web browsers, iTunes etc. seem to be unaffected - I can also access Disk Utility and other Apps through Spotlight, but No sign of my "Macintosh HD".
I ran a "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility - and here's the report it provided:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
---The "Repair Disk" Button in Disk Utility is all grayed out though so I can't run it...
I'm at a loss. I can't afford AppleCare, and they won't help me because I'm just out of my 90 day phone support...
I'm on an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac - the last Glossy White one before the new ones.
I've got the latest version of Tiger.
Any advice would be a Godsend. I'm afraid I may have ruined my iMac.
    Thanks!

We usually try to give folks who come here simplified advice that keeps them comfortable troubleshooting and repairing their Macs and won;t raise other issues for them. Command line tools don't usually fall into the simplified category and fsck for Mac OS X Tiger is not recommended by Apple, except as a last resort. It is known to cause other issues.
    From the Apple Knowledge Base article that Dale has linked below;
Note: If you're using Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you should use Disk Utility instead of fsck, whenever possible.
If you can successfully start up in Safe Mode or use Disk Utility while started up from a disc, you don't need to use fsck.
IMO, it isn't helpful for you to come along and contradict sound advice from folks who have used the Knowledge Base and are aware of Apple's recommendations because you think that you know better.

  • Please Help - CD Drive - Discs not appearing!!!

Whenever I put a disc of any kind into my drive, it does not show up in the finder or anything. Strangely, my drive appears normal in Profiler.
The Discs show up in the Disk Utility though! That is the weird part, it knows they are there, I just can't do anything to them.
I can't run hardware test, because that is on a DVD.
    PLEASe HElp

    Hi Carter,
Whenever I put a disc of any kind into my drive, it does not show up in the finder or anything. Strangely, my drive appears normal in Profiler.
It would appear that settings in your Finder Preferences may have been altered. Try the following:
    1. Click anywhere on the Desktop to make it active
    2. From the menubar select Finder->Preferences
    3. Click on the General icon
    4. Ensure that CDs, DVDs and iPods is ticked in the Show these items on the Desktop section
All should be well now. Post back, either way, on how you got on.
I can't run hardware test, because that is on a DVD.
You should be able to startup from the DVD by holding down the Option(alt) key when powering up your Mac. This will take you to the Startup Manager screen where you'll be able to select AHT or any other bootable volume.

  • ITunes Won't Recognize Optical Drive / Can't Burn Discs.

Hi. I’m having some problems w/ an installation of iTunes on a Windows 64 bit PC.  Specifically, when iTunes is installed, Windows 7 no longer recognizes the optical drive, and I can't burn discs via iTunes.  I’ve attempted to implement all the solutions identified here,
Optical Drive is No Longer Recognized, or "Disc Burner or Software Not Found" alert after Install

, and still find myself trapped in a vicious circle; i.e., (1) with iTunes installed Windows 7 no longer recognizes the optical drive, (2) Upon clearing the UpperFilters Value  of GEARAspiWDM  in the registry at  {4De36E965 … } Windows 7 functions as expected and I can play cds in iTunes, but iTunes produces an error messages at start up along the lines of “iTunes did not install properly. Or, there’s a registry error ”  In either case, I am not able to burn cds via iTunes.
My most rigorous effort amounted to (1) uninstalling  all Apple products and third party GEAR driver update software via Control Panel, (2) a registry repair w/ Registry Mechanic and (3) reinstallation of all identifiable Apple software.  Still the problem remains.
Apple I love you, but you’re bringing me down
From iTunes Diagnostics (w/ UpperFilters Empty (I notice the Diagnostic Utility is also seeking a LowerFilters entry.  The registry doesn’t have references to LowerFilter at this location.  Maybe that’s the problem?)) …

  • DVD drive will not take disc

I know there are other threads about this, but it seems like my situation is a little different than others. My combo drive has worked fine since I bought my laptop. Now, of course, it stops working one month after my warranty expires. It just won't take my disc and there's no disc in the drive. I've tried all of the following:
    1) Resetting
    2) Resetting PRAM
    3) Resetting PMU
    4) Resetting Open Firmware
None of these options worked. Is there anything else I can try, or do I have to shell out the money for Apple to fix it?

I am having the same problem. If you hear get some advice that fixes the trick, I'd be grateful to hear from you. Thanks and good luck!

  • Optical drive problem - ejects any disc

    Hi everybody,
I have 4 years old white MacBook and I have problem with cd drive - it ejects any disc right after I put one in. It doesn't seem that it's trying to read it, the disc is just ejected after few seconds. I don't know if it is software or hardware problem (but I'm afraid it's hardware). Can anybody help me?
    Thanks
    Natalia

I have same problem with my iMac but not fixed it yet. I ran a hardware check (hold down D during start up) and this did report a fault but it made no sense to me. Worth a try. Other forums suggested create a new user account and see if applies to that user. i did this too and at first the new user would accept discs but now it will not.
    Cheers
