Please help, Photoshop gurus.

My ? is for the gurus out there who know about Photoshop Elements. I've posted it on the PSE board, (a.k.a. Adobe user forum. http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc135be) but no one has replied.
The problem is that my How-To palette in PSE 4.0 is empty and the navigation buttons are disabled. A search of the Adobe forum gave me 2 threads about this, but with no definitive fix. One member advised another to uninstall PSE, log in as a new user, and reinstall from the new account.
Here's my chronology: I got my Mac Mini G4 which ran Panther, then got PSE 3.0. A few months later I upgraded to PSE 4.0 Soon after that, I upgraded to Tiger, 10.4.7 (and iLife 6). I kept PSE 3 installed, and the how to palette is still working on it. But I only just noticed that the how to palette on PSE 4 is blank and the navigation buttons in it are disabled (gray). I believe it worked after I initially upgraded to PSE 4, because I keep that palette open and I think I would have noticed its absence. So, it's possible I lost the palette when I upgraded to Tiger.
Does anyone know about this problem? Can you suggest a solution? (I have repaired disk permissions and nothing came up about PSE 4.) In the Apple Discussions I repeatedly read that Mac users should only uninstall/reinstall as a LAST resort. But then, Adobe is not Apple software....
Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks, Old Toad and aj for your quick replies.
I do have a ScriptingAdditions folder, which contains Adobe Unit Types (12 KB). (But it could be missing items or corrupt, right?)
In Preferences I have 2 items named adobe, but neither matches aj's description. One is for Acrobat, and the other is named com.adobe.AdobePDFsettings.plist. There is also a folder named Adobe Systems which contains a folder named Product licenses_120 which is empty.
This weekend I will uninstall PSE 3 and PSE 4, then reinstall 4. Actually, I should say I'll get my husband to do it, because he's the Mac guy around here. Are there any items in particular to make sure to find and trash during the uninstall?
Last, do you think I should do the reinstall under a new User account?
Thank you again for your assistance.

  • Please help: Photoshop CS5 - Yosemite locked permissions?

Please I hope someone can help!
I just updated my older iMac with Yosemite, and reinstalled Adobe CS 5. What a mess. Neither Illustrator or InDesign will launch. Photoshop will work, but has problems. (Thank God I've not touched my newer, main studio working iMac's OS, where CS5 still runs fine.)
In trying to quit Photoshop (which won't respond to quitting and must be force-quit), I am getting the error message, "Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have necessary access privileges. Use the 'Get Info' command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file of enclosing folders."
I searched around and found what was sure to be a promising fix posted some time ago (see below, "Here's the Fix"), but the problem is, when I hold down Option > Go ... Library to navigate to the "Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings", the damned folder is actually EMPTY! There is no file to click on in order to get info on it! So I cannot even tamper with permissions. Ugh. It's bad enough the neither Illustrator nor InDesign will launch. What a sorry mess. I will not TOUCH my MacBook Pro laptop or main iMac. I will leave well enough alone. So glad I only messed with this one computer I rarely do anything on anymore. It could be that this is an old early 2009 iMac, sure, but I don't trust the new OS.
Anyone encounter similar, and have any workaround? Thank you in advance!
    HERE'S THE FIX:
Navigate to /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings
    Select that file File>Get Info
At the very bottom under permissions, hit the + icon.
Add your user name from the list that pops up.
    Highlight the user just added.
Click the gear icon to the right of the +/-
    Choose make owner.
Click the gear icon again and choose apply to folder contents.
    Open Photoshop.
    That should do the trick!

Have you tried saving as another layer-capable format, tif or psb?
Is there anything notable about the files – extraordinary number of layers, size or whatever?
Other than that have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, font validation, etc.)?

  • Please help - Photoshop won't open

    Hi,
I just bought photoshop elements, installed it and everything was fine.  Like a dope, I downloaded a graphic from a website, and tons of adware/malware was also loaded on my computer.  I couldn't stand all the popups and junk, so i used the Dell Restore to restore the computer to the point right before I loaded photoshop.  After that was done, I reloaded photoshop, and now I can't get in to the program.  (The popups went away.) The opening screen comes up, I choose "edit photos" instead of "organize"...the moving ribbon comes up as if it was thinking, and then it goes away and the opening screen stays there.  No error messages.  If I choose Organize, I can get in to the photo organizing section with no problem.
I'm running Windows 7.  I tried uninstalling photshop, reinstalling it, uninstalling it, ran the cc cleaner, reinstalled it, uninstalled it and removed the preferences, rebooted a million times, uninstalled and reinstalled again....I still can't get in.  If I click on a .psd file the opening screen comes up and it sill just sits there.  I went into Organize and loaded an update, that went fine, but still can't get in to photoshop.
Can anyone help?  I appreciate any assistance you can give me!
    Thank you,
    Holly

No problem, It's just that you probably have more luck to get an answer than you have  here.

I see a lot of people asking the same question in these forums, but I don't see any answers.  Can anyone help?  I appreciate any assistance you can give me!  I was so excited to use the program, and now it seems like I'll be shut out until I get a new computer, which is not going to happen soon!

Quit the editor, then restart it while holding down Ctrl+alt+shift. Keep those keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • Please Help (Photoshop Elements 7 Serial)

I bought a Wacom Tablet which included Photohop Elements 7. I lost the serial number, and I switched computers. Now I can't reinstall it because I need the serial number to start the install. I talked to Wacom about being able to get my serial number, but I was told that they couldn't help and that I should contact Adobe. So, is there anyway I can get my serial number, or be given a new number for my Photoshop Elements 7 without having to purchase a new one?

Long answer: No. Adobe doesn't know what you don't know, even more so for these OEM deals which use specific serial number ranges. If you never botehred to register it, it's a goner and you'll have to buy anew license of PSE 10.

  • Please Help - Photoshop Freezing Up!

Hi, I have Photoshop CS2 Windows installed on Windows 7 laptop. I open Photoshop and it is getting worse. I was able to work fine a few days ago but now if I even resize a window or start to paint I get a ``not responding`` and Photoshop freezes.
Any ideas what could be causing this.Thanks.
    Photoshop Memory and Image Cache
    Cache Levels: 6
    Available Ram: 1707 MB
Maximum Used by Photoshop: 55% (938 MB)
    OS: Windows 7
Installed Memory (Ram): 3.00 GB (2.75 GB Useable)
    Windows Task Manager Says:
    Processes: 73
    CPU Usage: 63%
    Physical Memory: 48%
    Total: 2814
    Cached: 1441
    Available:1440
    Free: 38

Clear out as much space as you can on your hard drive, and defragment it. Photoshop requires a lot of contiguous free space on the drive for its scratch files ("RAM overflow", to put it very simply). Over time, your drive fills up and gets fragmented.
That said, by today's standards that laptop is severely underpowered. Files are simply bigger today than they were back when CS2 was current. If you intend to keep using it, regular maintenance is required.

  • I an getting an error with photo merge in PS cc . It gives me a code tmp00000001 using from photoshop and if I try from bridge it tell me that I need to select more than one image. It is not recognizing the photos I am selecting in bridge. please help. my

This returns 1 row of data
However if i run a small part of the above code...

  • Problem installing Adobe Photoshop CS4. Please help me.

    Hi Geeks,
I am stuck with Adobe Photoshop CS4 (Trial) installation since last two days. I am desperately looking for help to get rid of this problem.
    My Problem:
At the end of installation of Adobe Photoshop CS4 (Trial) i was prompted with en error
message stating some of the components were not installed.  When I check the more information button provided in the error message window, it showed below error.
“Adobe Photoshop CS4 English Language Pack Error: Error 2.”
Still I could find the installed Photoshop in C:\Program files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe
When I executed above file; application showed below error message and close it.
“Some of the application components are missing from the application directory, Please reinstall the application.”
I just try to run Adobe Device Central CS4 which was installed along with it.  It showed below error message.
“The Localized resource files for this application could not be loaded. Please reinstall or repair the application and try again.”
So My Problem is I am unable to open Photoshop CS4 after its unsuccessful installation.
I spent more than a day in different ways as I explained below in more info section.  I am desperately looking for helping hands to fix this problem.
I ever find this kind of difficulty with any other components installation in my 10 years of development experience.  Please help me.
    More info:
    (1) I have downloaded Adobe Photoshop CS4 (Trial) in this month (July 09) from adobe official site.
    (2) My PC OS Windows XP SP3.
    (3) Prior to install Photoshop CS4 I had Acrobat reader 8 and Adobe DW CS4.
    (4) After I read some stuff on net, I downloaded both Windows install Clean up and CS4InstallerDatabaseUtility.exe.
    (5) First I uninstalled all DW CS4 and Photoshop CS4 using add/remove then rebooted.
then ran CS4InstallerDatabaseUtility.exe (which really did not removed as it did not
find any Adobe component), then installed Photoshop CS4. No luck. same error.
    (6) This time I ran CS4InstallerDatabaseUtility.exe and removed DW CS4, Photoshop CS4 and flash and rebooted. Then I ran Photoshop CS4 as Administrator. Same thing repeated at the end of installation and when I tried to open the photoshop.  Finding a real hard time with it.
Any kind of help to get rid of this problem would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    R Sunil.

PS CS4 software itself has to be installed as Admin. Put the downloaded folder on the desktop (if not there already). Open the folder and right click on the .exe file and choose run as Admin.
Install on C drive is the best stable choice.
Before you do all this make the anti-virus is turned off. If windows defender is running turn that off too. If Adobe reader is installed renove that. Ensure no other adobe products are running in the background.
During install the process will hang at 90 percent for about 10 to 15 mins. This is normal.
After the software is installed reboot computer.
After reboot go to start, All Programs and right click on PS CS4. Click on properties, Compatibility and check run as Admin. Hit Apply and OK to close. Run PS CS4 and update to 11.0.1
    Be Advised:
Now the biggest problem you might run into is that the trial install went too far and failed. If this happened you cannot re-install PS CS4 trial because of the DRM that is hidden in the registry hive. The hidden DRM prevents people from installing the trial more then once and limits the trial at 30 days. There is nothing you can do other then nuking the hard drive and a fresh install of your operating system.

  • Photoshop CC program error when opening or placing files. VERY FRUSTRATING PLEASE HELP.

I'm an advertising graduate student that relies heavily on Adobe programs for my multiple simultaneous projects throughout the school year, specifically Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Muse, Edge Animate and Premiere Pro.
I'm using a MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite.
I have been experiencing an incredibly frustrating issue with Photoshop and Muse, both CC 2014. I'll speak about Photoshop in this thread since, well, this is a Photoshop forum. This has been happening for almost a year now. I figured Adobe would've fixed this problem by now, especially given the myriad of crash reports I send.
While working in Photoshop, sometimes when I go to place a file I get an error message that says "Could not complete your request because of a program error." It used to be that this error was fatal and I would have no other choice but to force quit out of Photoshop and restart it. We all know how incredibly time-consuming it is for Photoshop to open (especially 10-15 times in one sitting), and being in grad school, time is not something I have a lot of when I have deadlines and projects due.
This error is still happening and for the same reasons; however, now I can still continue to work on my file, as long as I don't need to open a document or place an image...which doesn't help very much because I'm doing a lot of mockups and composites and need those functionalities. It happens probably 90% of the time when I try to place or open a document.
For the record, it's a similar issue that's causing Muse to crash as well. When I try to add an image file, it causes the entire program to crash "unexpectedly," as Muse so eloquently puts it.
Until recently I had kept CS6 on my hard drive and would dig it out to use in place of CC when PSCC would crash; however, someone told me that having both versions was likely the cause for the crashes. After much hesitation, I finally uninstalled all of CS6 from my hard drive the other day (the right way, not into the trash can, since someone is inevitably going to ask that question) and I'm still having this problem, and now I don't have my CS6 version to fall back on and now I'm in a really bad spot.
I apologize for all the rambling, but I'm really very, very frustrated with this error, and I had to do something while waiting for Photoshop to restart. Someone please help.

MacOS 10.10? Yeah, Apple is working on that bug.  They already fixed the crash in the open/save dialogs, but have a few more problems to address with the open/save dialogs.

  • Photoshop Elements 8. "Could not use Clone Stamp Tool because of a program error."  Please help.

Photoshop Elements 8.  "Could not use Clone Stamp Tool because of a program error."  Please help.

    Try this:
    Open your picture file
    Access the clone stamp tool
Hold down the ALT key on the keyboard and left click on the area from which you wish to clone, then release the ALT key, and click to place the pixels at the destination
    TIPS:
It is a good idea to open a blank layer at the top in the layers palette, and do the cloning on this layer. Be sure that "sample all layers" at the top is checked. You can change the layer opacity if necessary
Use the bracket keys next to the letter p on the keyboard to increase & decrease the size of the cursor
Let us know  how you make out with the error message now.

  • Please Help. Photoshop installation failed half way through

Initially I had downloaded the photoshop CC2014 trial once, I paid I wanted the CC version because I need the oil paint function which was taken out on the CC2014 version, so what I did is uninstall the CC2014 which was installed and working and proceeded to install the CC version but midway through installation it kept failing and telling me to restart my computer, I have done that at least half a dozen times, plus I've also tried the following:
    > I uninstalled every adobe app I had including CC
    > I have used the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner tool app
    > Have restarted my computer so many times I lost count and I still get the same error, half way through the installation process
    > And now the same thing is happening when I try to reinstall illustrator, this is a nightmare!
BTW I'm not running any other software while doing this and have turned off the fire walls
I'm on an Imac OS X version 10.9.5
Please help I've spent so manny hours trying to solve this, it's driving me crazy and need to complete some work in photoshop I have deadline.

Tat7 I would recommend reviewing your installation log files for actionable error messages.  You can find details on how to locate and interpret your installation logs at Troubleshoot install issues with log files | CC - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/troubleshoot-install-logs-cc.html.  You are welcome to post any additional errors you locate to this discussion.

I am trying to turn a photoshop document in to a pdf. Print is in grey and under Save As PDF is not an option.   Any other PS document I open allows me both options. What is wrong with this document?!

I have renamed it and opened again.
I duplicated the layers to another doc.

  • I have created a folder that I can now Save to and view in Photoshop (CS4) but cannot find in spotlight or any other way on my mac. PLEASE HELP!!

I use Photoshop CS4, I do not think this problem is related to PS... I am not exactly sure what happened. I created a folder on desktop, think I changed name of it. Now it is not on desktop. I know the exact name of the folder and have tried doing a spotlight search and cannot locate it AS WELL as searching for a file by name EXACT as name is. However if I go into Photoshop I can open or "save as" and open the folder and save as a "recent location" and the folder and its contents are found no problem... however cannot see the pathway to know where the folder is located on my mac.. PLEASE HELP!!! Been using photoshop and my mac for MANY years and NEVER had a problem like this... I have a photo client awaiting their pictures to be burned on a cd and mailed to them!!
    THANK YOU!!
    Laurie

Try this. Open one of your files. The window that contains your picture is named at the top. Command click on the name and you'll see the entire path starting with its name and then moving to the folder, the folder it is contained in, etc all the way to down to the hard drive volume name. This should tell you where to find the folder.
