Please help - Powermac g5 won't fully boot - drive boots in other g5

Here is the deal. My g5 won't boot up now. It starts up gets to the blue screen for about a second and immediately goes to the desktop and beachball spins. The dock loads, but the desktop icons don't and only some of the menu bar does(for instance the clock doesn't show, so there are weird gaps in the menu bar). I've reset the pram, smu, booted in to single user and did fsck. I booted off of the install disc but disk utility says disk is fine though it will not let me verify or repair permissions. When I try to boot into safe mode the fans start screaming, literally almost as loud as a vacuum and it just ends up beachballing on the desktop with no dock or menubar. At work we have the identical model of powermac, so I brought the hard drive in there and it booted just fine. I ran disk utility and repaird the permissions. Took the drive back home and still won't boot. So I reinstalled the os (archive and install) but still won't boot.
One thing to note, I updated the firmware on my superdrive with newer pioneer drivers the day before this started happening. Could that be the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I hope my computer is not bricked here.

anyone think it could be the logic board (crazy fans) or maybe the processors even? Sorry to bump this up but I am desperate to get this working again.

If anyone knows why the driver won't install or had the same problem please help! Thanks

Hi brunos mum, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

  • Please help, mega 180 won't boot, urgent

    All all...
I am in deep deep trouble... My mega 180 won't boot, it won't display bios, I tried the reset jumper, unplug the pc, didn't work...
It runs ok with the hi-fi mode. I was using an add on AGP card, but now I unpluged it and trying to use the onboard card. Still nothing is displayed, I want to do a BIOS recovery, but mega 180 doesn't have floppy drive, what can I do? please help.#
    Many Thx
    Kevin

Was your system working and it stopped ? If so what did you last change ?
Or are you setting it up for the first time and it won't boot ?
What brand of memory and which CPU ?
As Ortrofox says... remove everything you've added. Graphics card, tv tuner, sound card. Then follow the reset to factory defaults in the manual.
Does anything happen at all when you try to boot ?  Fan spins ? screen clears ? keyboard lights blink ? beeps ? Is the lan light on in the back ? If you have an optical mouse is the mouse light on ?
Answers to these questions should let us give you some suggestions of other things to try.
    Good luck

  • Please Help! Macbook won't boot up after attempted Leopard install (Wont bo

Ok so I'll go through EXACTLY what has happened to my laptop in the past day.. please note that the laptop was NEVER moved from the desk while this has all happened. Also a couple other things you should know.. I had Applecare, but 6 months ago when i sent it in to replace the harddrive -- they said they found some water damage, and it would cost $700 to replace... so i just put in the harddrive myself for $50, and it has worked fine since... So I'm pretty sure I can't turn to Applecare anymore...
    Alright...
    Yesterday
One of my memory sticks went bad on me... (i had 2- 1gig sticks.) I took the bad one out, and the computer seemed to run fine on the single stick of memory.
    Last night
I started to install leopard as an update over 10.4, seemed to work fine, though it was slow -- and finally i got to the leopard installation complete thing (please reboot the computer)... so I did...
It starts loading up... shows the mac symbol with the loading circle thing... but wait, Oh ****, i was probally was supposed to take out the cd... So i turn off the macbook by holding down the power button... and I eject the cd, and then try to start it up...
    Not loading... ****.
So after some mulling i decide, alright -- i'll reinstall again...
I boot to the cd drive, choose my options, start the install, and go to sleep..
    This Morning
I wake up.. the install hasn't moved at all... It's still at the same place where i left it..
****... so again I manually shut it off, and try and restart to boot from the CD again..
    NO GO....
If I hold down C to boot from DVD
The computer attempts to read the disk.. CD drive seems to power down.. then try again.. Then it ejects the cd, and goes to the Apple logo with the spinning circle, but never loads. I've tried it with My old 10.4 disk, and the new leopard disk. Same result on both. neither disk seems scratched either.
If I just boot up regular
It goes to the apple logo with spinning circle.
    SOOOO...
I tried resetting the PMU, and PRAM
Is it likely that it is my superdrive gone bad, at a horrible time? If so I guess i'll just buy one on eBay and replace it myself. Is there any way to test it?
Could there by another problem wrong with it?
Please help me troubleshoot this! I'd be very appreciative -- I'm a poor college Computer science student that needs his computer to work for his classes.
    Thanks All!

Yes. You need the two RAM modules, or at the very least the remaining one RAM module must be for sure securely seated. If not securely seated with only one module, the result is as you've seen.
i was probally was supposed to take out the cd...
No, not necessary. After that, the very delayed loading was totally normal, sounds as if you were just impatient.

Oh, and check the AppleCare agreement, as to the best of my recollection, you can should be able to get a refund, pro-rated for time left.
Check how full your hard drive is now. I'm not clear if you've yet erased your HD or how many systems you've installed - if not erased perhaps it's full up.
A PRAM reset should allow you to boot from the install disc, access the Install Discs's System Profiler, and see what things look like. Also, you should be able to boot to the Apple Hardware Test - while you do need a working optical drive to do so, you don't need any hard drive at all, and it doesn't sound like either one has been lost.

    Hi there,
this morning my macbook was not blocked and i forced to shut down, then i cannot start up and i keep on getting this screen that i attach. I tried to boot in safe mode but it won't let me, also make a hardware cheek and won't let me either, please help me , i can't work with out my computer
    THANKS!

If you want to preserve the data on the startup drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive or other storage device to hold the data.
    1. Start up from the Recovery partition, from Internet Recovery, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    2. If Method 1 fails because of disk errors, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    3. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    4. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Computer won't fully boot

    hi,
i have a g4 desktop with os x 10.3.7 installed. the computer will only boot up to the point of, "login window starting." it won't progress beyond that point. how should i reinstall the software w/o losing my folders on my desktop, and having to reinstall 3rd party software? i'm very scared as i cannot afford to lose folders/files!!
    thank you,

    Hi, Andrew,
Thank you for your detailed instructions, and for responding to my question. I failed to include in my question that I already had performed the functions you suggested, and the following was the results:
    1. Volume bit map needs minor repair.
    2. Repair attempted on 2 volumes:
    a) 1 HFS volume repaired
    b) 1 volume could not be repaired
I received another message when I ran Disk Utility that there was an "internal error." I also performed the "Repair Permissions Disk" function, and during that process, I received the message, "Lost its connectivity with the disk managment tool and cannot continue."
From there, I disconnected all peripheral hardware, and began the process again. That went well, but I am still unable to get past the "Login Window" point. Three weeks ago, I installed upgrade software that my system notifies me about, weekly, and all went well, with exception of one software, which I don't recall the name of. I failed to turn off the "sleep" function before installing the software, so I am presuming that the installation was not completed for that reason.
I have AOL installed on my computer, and one morning, when I sat down at my computer, I noticed that AOL, mysteriously, had quit on its own. Each time I tried to launch it, it wouldn't launch. I use dial-up for AOL on my G4, because Time Warner Cable does not support Apple computers, although I do have cable Internet service. I reinstalled AOL Wednesday night; it launched fine, and when I proceeded to reply to an E-mail I received, it crashed! It was then when I shut down my computer. I restarted the computer Thursday morning, and it was then that my problem began.
Please help me, my dissertation is on that computer!!!!!
    Thank you, again.

  • Please help, LUMIA 920 won't update.

    Hello
First let me say that I've had my NL0920 for six months and love it, but I am really frustrated that even 5 months after Amber came out my phone won't update and even fails updating when I try using other methods that have been discussed here.  Please help, this is really frustrating because I don't have any of the Amber goodness and at this rate I know I will also miss the Black update.  Even though I love my 920 I fully expected it would be updated fairly constantly as that was one of the main things that were easy to see from the press about Nokia.
    I have a Nokia Lumia 920 type RM-821, white (RM-821_lta_lta1_546)
    product code 059S1L6,
    configuration ID 153556,
    Label ID 1232.5957.9200.10211.142,
    Application Version 3.3.32
    Mobile Operator 000-PR
    Accesories Agent 2.6.2.1
    Feedback to Nokia 2.5.0.17
    Firmware Update Notifier 1.0.1.7
    Nokia Share 2.1.2.3
    Silent Installer 1.4.1.2
    SIM Unlock 1.0.0.5
    Software Version 1232.5957.1308.0002
The phone is an unlocked Puerto Rican Country variant and is being used in Panama Central America with the Claro Operator.  According to the Global Availability page (http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/) the Country variant should already have the amber update available.
When I try checking for phone updates through the Settings menu, it tells me that my phone is up to date, which is obviously not true.
Please help.  I love this phone but if it won't upgrade then I am going to have to start looking at something else, because I really hoped I would get the new camera improvements, and the same with the black update.

  • OMG PLEASE HELP ME! WON'T START UP AND SCREEN LOOKS FUNNY O.O

Okies, my sister was on my macbook pro all night, and i just finished updating some program (the mac version of winzip?) and the comp froze and had little rectangles all over it, like tiny TVs with bad reception on it O.o
So i hold down the Power button to reset it, then turn it on, the little rectangles are there when the grey screen with the apple on it, then it goes to a blue screen and stops
I can't do anything! I even have my install disk in it cos i thought i might need to restart it that way and now it won't come out T_T
Please help! I don't know what ive done, i've only had it...less than a week!

Couple of things I'd do here:
    1. Restart your computer.
    2. While the computer restarts, press the trackpad button and hold it down through the boot process. During the normal bootup process, this should tell the computer to eject the CD.
    After that, follow these steps:
    1. Turn off your computer again.
    2. Unplug all cables including the power cable
    3. Take out the laptop's battery.
    4. Press the power button and hold it down for 5 seconds.
    5. Put back in the battery.
    6. Plug in the power cord
    7. Press the power button to start the computer
    8. As soon as you here the "bong" noise (the startup noise) press and hold down the following keys: Command Option P R (that's four keys all together including the letters P and R)
    9. In a few seconds, the computer will go "bong" again (i.e., present the startup sound). Once that happens, let go of the keys and let the computer finish booting.
Did this work to solve your screen problems?

    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Please help iPhone 4S won't turn on!

Okay so this all happened months ago when ios7 came out. I tried to update my iPhone 4S software straight off of my phone in the settings to ios7 and it wouldn't work. So than I hooked my iphone up to my computer and went on iTunes and tried to update from there manually. Everything was working it said like 95% done updating but than it said this operation can't be done. Now, my iphone won't turn on, it goes to the connect to iTunes screen, but i don't know what to do I tried to connect it to iTunes and it didn't turn on. Please help I need this iphone to turn on!

Assuming your phone was never jailbroken, try the following:
Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer if it isn't there already from apple.com/itunes
    Reboot your computer
Connect the phone to a USB 2 port directly on your computer, not to a USB hub. If it is a desktop or tower computer use a port on the back, not on the front
    Disable your antivirus and firewall
    Launch iTunes
Connect the USB cable to the computer, but not to the phone
On the phone hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons for EXACTLY 10 seconds, then release the SLEEP button but continue holding the HOME button - if an Apple logo appeared you held too long; the screen should be black when you release the SLEEP button.
While still holding the HOME button connect the end of the USB cable to the phone
Wait until iTunes acknowledges the phone, then release the HOME button.
The phone should now restore. If it doesn't note the error number and post back.

  • Please Help, Several Applications Won't Open!

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this. Please point me in the right direction if it isn't. I just did a software update. The current "internet security update" was, I believe, one of installs (I wish I paid more attention). Now, I have several internet related applications that won't work. Safari, my browser of choice, won't open (I'm doing this on Firefox). My email app, Eudora, won't open. Quicktime won't open. I just tried reinstalling both Safari and Eudora. Both still won't open. I haven't done anything with Quicktime yet. Just checked other applications (RealPlayer, Windows Media Player). Neither will open. Is there a conflict somewhere? How can I resolve this? Please help!
    Thank you.
    FYI: I have a Titanium G4 550MHz PowerBook running OS 10.4.10.

As others have noted, get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone before updating. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall everything.

  • Please HELP!  Why won't Leopard install on my eMac?

When I put the Leopard DVD in my eMac it does not recognize it at all. I don't hear the drive running, and nothing pops up on the desktop. Altho it is an older machine, it meets all of the system requirements: 1GHz, 640MB, PowerPC G4, with plenty of hard drive space! I've tried to reboot and install, I've tried reboot and hold the C key to install... nothing works! I even put in another DVD just to make sure that the optical drive is still working properly... it played just fine.
I've read everything that I can about installing but haven't found anything that addresses this. I did see one article that said that Leopard cannot be installed on UFS(?)-formatted volumes. Can anyone tell me how I would find out whether I'm affected by that or not? Also, when I tried it in my iBook G4, it popped right up... what's the deal?!
PLEASE HELP! I'M SOOOO FRUSTRATED!! Thanx in advance!

    Hi There...

I would suspect that your optical drive is not functioning properly. While the drive is most likely capable of reading DL DVDs, it may not be working right. See if you can skip through a full DL DVD movie on the drive with zero errors. Be sure to include both layers meaning go past the 2-hour point.
The target mode is another solution, but even if you install it, you won't be able to fix it or do anything that requires the DVD unless you fix that first.
I will try to install it using the "target mode" with a firewire and see if it works, unless anyone has any other suggestions for me... thanx.
