Please Help!!! Reformat hard drive after virus

Yes i know apples don't get viruses.
Here's the deal, i got a bad virus today and had to reformat my hard drive.
Before I did this i went to staple and bought a external hard drive to copy My Music folder so i wouldn't loose all the tunes i have purchased. i have an iphone , and will defiantly be getting the 3G in just a few hours. will i have any problem syncing my iphone back to a newly installed itunes? i am still waiting for the operating system to install so i am getting worried that after i get it fixed i will have "phone problems".
can anyone give me some input on this situation

The virus was on my laptop.
It is called "AntiVirus XP 2008"
I got it by clicking a link looking for autocad information.
I copied my entire itunes folder to an external hard drive, will i have any problems after i download itunes? i was thinking i could just copy the itunes folder over and be right back where i was. is this going to work?

  • Reformatting Hard Drive after Time Machine

How do I reformat my OneTouch mini 4 hard drive after I've decided to stop using Time Machine with it? The problem I run into is I need to be able to go in between my MacBook and my PC. I saw FAT has a limit of 32GB, this won't work for me.
Did I do irreparable damage by using it with Time Machine?
    Thanks.

Actually FAT32 can support more than 32GB - this is just a limitation set by Microsoft on its own format utility to move people to NTFS. There are lots of third party programs for Windows that will format a large drive for FAT32. I use Partition Magic. On the Mac side, I'm not sure - I've formatted flash drives for FAT but since I almost never have the need to share an external drive between Windows and the Mac, I just don't recall if I've tried formatting a drive larger than 32GB and I don't know if Disk Utility can do it. A quick search didn't turn up a definitive answer but it looks like it can.
But you can give it a try. Open up Disk Utility, select the drive and then select Partition. You'll see partition scheme - click on 'Current' and select 1 Partition. Then below the box you'll see an Options button. Click on it and select Master Boot Record and click on Okay. Now to the right near the top you'll see Volume information. Give the drive a name and in the popup menu, select MS-DOS. If Disk Utility won't format a partition in DOS larger than 32GB you'll get an error message.

  • Please help - external hard drive security / privileges issue.

Yesterday while messing around with my mac I stupidly changed a setting I can't seem to remedy.
I may have somehow selected an obscure security / privileges option, most likely within the 'get info' option and now my external hard drive icon is not visible on my desktop so I can reselect it to unselect the setting. I know its ok because 'disk first aid' can verify its presence but I can't see it.
Urgently need access as I have data i need to retrieve.
    Please help.
    G4 OS 10.4

I`m a little confused. Disk First Aid is a utility from MacOS 9.
Do you mean disk utility ?
If yes, in the upper line is a button for unmounting a disk. I don`t want to try it, but is it possible that a unmounted disk can be mounted again ?
I just found out, that when you move the cursor over the button, it says: unmount or mount a disk. Maybe that`s it.

  • Please Help! Hard Drive Problem

Hi, I know there are various other posts with a similar problem but I have tried a lot of suggestions and keep hitting a brick wall. Apologies if this rambles on a bit or doesn't make a lot of sense.
Two nights ago my 18 month old imac refused to start up properly and hangs on the grey screen with the fans blowing at full capacity. I have tried various suggestions such as resetting the PRAM and SMU and then opened disk utility from the install cd.
Verifying/repairing disk permissions got stuck about 3/4 of the way through so I then tried to repair disk which failed. various messages told me that there were "invalid node structure" and that it was rebuilding "Catalog B-tree".
    I was then told that
volume MAC HD could not be repaired
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
when I attempt to repair the disk again Macintosh HD is now greyed out (although i can still select it) - clicking repair disc again this time brings up various missing thread records, then -
    invalid sibling link
    volume check failed.
opening in firewire target disc mode brings up the usual firewire icon on the imac but my ibook doesn't seem to recognise that any external drives are plugged in.
Any other suggestions? - Is the Hard Drive completely gone or is there any hope? Will erasing the disk and starting from scratch going to do anything? Most of the stuff on the computer is backed up so I am not bothered if I lose everything.
    thanks in advance.

    Hello Again, Happy New Year!
Managed to get a copy of Disk Warrior Yesterday but now have different problems.
When I try to start up from the Disk Warrior CD the mac does what it should, I click agree to the terms and conditions, the Disk Warrior title screen comes up and then the mac restarts again.
Now rather than hang on the grey screen it goes to a black screen with white text (single user mode???) with the message -
/etc/master.passwd: No such file or directory
    -sh-2.05b
If I try to start up from the Mac OS install disc this works "fine" - i.e the computer doesn't automatically restart itself but disk repair still fails.
If I enter Target disc mode my imac fails to show up on my ibook so that I can get to any of my files but it shows up in Disk Utlity, etc.
The Disk Warrior CD works fine on my ibook. I have tried to repair the iMac hard drive on my iBook using disk warrior (iMac in target disk mode).
It gets as far as Step 5 - locating directory data then appears to hang and the spinning wheel comes up. I left it over night and there is now a message saying that
    Speed Inhibited by Disc Malfunction.
The spinning wheel is still going and Disk Warrior is still trying to locate directory data.
Any recommendations? The Disc Malfunction message worries me somewhat - will reformatting the disc and starting from scratch do any good or will I just be wasting my time.
    cheers

  • Please Help! Hard drive problem "Mystery Gb Space"

I recently ripped a lot of CD’s into itunes, so much that I filled up my hard drive. I cleaned up my music by deleting music I didn’t need. I also burned a majority of music to CD so that I could delete it off my hard drive. I have a 80gb hard dive; I freed up 20gb of space. I did not secure the trash when I deleted the music files. So for a while I had 20gb of free space, but a few days ago I looked at my istat pro and noticed that I now have a full hard drive again. I have not ripped any CD’s, downloaded any thing, or done any thing that would take up this much space. I contacted apple but all they would help me with was buying a plan. The only advice I was given was to secure trash. I would like to know where this “extra gb space” came from.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Get "Disk Inventory X" (it is freeware.)
    http://www.derlien.com/
It searches your hard drive and gives you a visual representation of all of your hard drive space usage. It seperates each file type into groups of colors etc so you can see where you have 15gb of mp3's and such. You can use it to open finder windows to those files. Just be careful not to delete any system files with it!
Also, you can save yourself about 7gigs right off the bat by deleting all of the sound files your computer comes with for garageband (unless you use garageband.) I know I don't, and I couldnt believe they ship these machines packed with almost 7 gigs of sound files that you may or may not use...

  • Please Help - External Hard Drive Issue

    1) Most of my music is on an external hard drive.
    2) I do not always keep my external hard drive connected to my computer.
    3) Recently, out of the blue, itunes started saying it couldn't find the files in library.
    4) I deleted the library and re-loaded it so that all the filepaths were correct.
    5) I disconnected my hard drive and opened my itunes library. It obviously couldn't find the files because the hard drive wasn't attached.
    6) I re-attached the hard drive.
    7) I opened itunes. It is no longer finding the files. Somehow the old filepaths were all erased. I have more than 7,500 songs, so finding the file for each one doesn't work as a solution.
I need to find a solution for this. I want my library on my C drive because I still have some music on that drive and don't want to have to attach my hard drive every time I add music (something I then do later). I tried sorting through all the other information out there, but there is too much and it's too varied. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much.
    Aidan
P.S. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the itunes 8.0.2, which seems not to have some of the buttons shown on previous versions (i.e. "import"). Thoughts?

Thanks so much for the help. It's seriously annoying to have to do this, but if that's what it takes.... One question: Is there not any way just to keep the file paths the same? i.e. If, when I add the folder to the library, the file path points to the location on my external hard drive, why won't it just stay pointed there so that an error message shows when the hard drive's not attached but then doesn't show when it is? I mean, it seems that itunes is re-naming/re-addressing the file path whenever the hard drive's not attached - a very aggravating feature.
    Thanks again.

  • Need help with how to reset bios and admin password to reformat hard drive in 8440p elitebook.......

need help with how to reset bios and admin password to reformat hard drive in 8440p elitebook? removal of cmos, resetting laptop, using cccleaner, windows password recovery and hiren's was noneffective, any help is appreciated. thanks

    Hi,
As your notebook is a business class machine, security is more stringent - the password is stored in non-volatile memory and there are no 'backdoor' passwords.  Your best option would be to contact HP regarding this.

  • Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not do a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive and start anew.  My bad but is all lost??

Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not complete a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive (10.5.8) and start anew (10.6.3).  My bad but is all lost?? Years of very important information....

You will need to purchase reovery sofware such as such as FileSalvage
    http://subrosasoft.com/software/filesalvage
You can download a demo copy that will tell you what it can recover
If you want to recover that you must pay for the software then
When you do the recovery, you will need another disk drive to receive the recovered files
Having install a new operating system on the disk after the retformat is going to gradually reduce the amount of data that this software will be able to recover for you

  • How to make iTunes recognize the music library in my external hard drive after instaIling Yosemite?

How to make iTunes recognize the music library in my external hard drive after instaIling Yosemite? I tried re-setting the media folder location, but it didn't work. What else should I do?

The issue is not related to the external drive. iTunes Match has difficulties matching tracks ripped fom CDs because they may differ slightly from the versions on sale in iTunes. You can try the match again. Otherwise do a search of this forum. There are already many discussions on this subject here that may help you.

The best approach would be to take the iPad to the school's IT person and see what is going wrong, why it will not accept your sign-in.  That person can make sure the userid and password are correct on the iPad.

  • How do I get finder to recognize my hard drive after pulling my hard drive out without eject...? Is my hard drive dead? I see it in disk utility... Can I get my info back?

I have a seagte back up plus. I pulled my hard drive out without ejecting it and now finder dosn't find it but I see it in disk utility (although I cant repair permissions) How do I get finder to recognize my hard drive after pulling my hard drive out without eject...? Is my hard drive dead? I see it in disk utility... Can I get my info back?
Thank you so much for any help

In Disk Utility you need to see a volume or partition in addition to the drive.
If all you see is the drive, then when you ejected it you proably corrupted the volume or partition on the drive.
If that is true then your chances of getting anything back are slim at best.
About the only thing I know that might work not is to send the disk out to a service for recovery. This is going to cost like $$$$.
Is the data worth that much?

  • What is the proceedure for replacing a hard drive (after failure) for RAID 5 with IX4-300D?

I have the IX4-300D with 4 hard drives (identical Seagate drives) using RAID 5.
Someday a hard drive will fail and I and I have to replace it. I read through the users manual briefly and I didn't see any documentation on how to perform a hard drive replacement and not lose any data.
    So here are my questions:
    1) I know per the instructions that Lenovo prefers using identical hard drives. Let's say in 2 years, 1 hard drive fails. Most likely, the same model Seagate hard drive will not be available. So will using a replacement hard drive by the same manufacturer with similar specifications work?
    2) Will the front panel (or the software) tell me which hard drive has failed?
    3) What is the proceedure for replacing a hard drive after a failure occurs? I read that the IX4-300D is not hot-swappable. So do I just power the IX4-300D down, replace the hard drive, and turn it back on?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi exceptionalht,
It is best to replace the hard drive with one that is the same manufacturer, rotational speed, and capacity, so it does not have to be exactly the same model.
The front panel should show which drive has failed. If not you can check the web interface to find out.
That is the basic procedure for replacing a hard drive. You can see a more detailed instructions here: Installing hard drives in an ix4-300d

  • Please Help , I Need semicolon ; after TABLESPACE "MFEED_DATA"

    Hi All,
please Help , I Need semicolon ; after TABLESPACE "MFEED_DATA"
as I am getting ; like below example
    select dbms_metadata.get_ddl('TABLE', 'A') || ';' As Result
    from dual;
    CREATE TABLE "MFEED"."A"
    (     "A" NUMBER
    ) PCTFREE 10 PCTUSED 40 INITRANS 1 MAXTRANS 255 NOCOMPRESS LOGGING
    STORAGE(INITIAL 65536 NEXT 1048576 MINEXTENTS 1 MAXEXTENTS 2147483645
    PCTINCREASE 0 FREELISTS 1 FREELIST GROUPS 1 BUFFER_POOL DEFAULT)
    TABLESPACE "MFEED_DATA"
    regards,

    Hi,
well, I don´t know if this works for any table, but I tried two of mine and it was ok:
    select substr(dbms_metadata.get_ddl('TABLE', '<table_name>'), 1,
    length(dbms_metadata.get_ddl('TABLE', '<table_name>') || ';')-4)|| ';' As Result
    from dual;
If the string gets too long, you must use dbms_lob - functions for string manipulation, but for "normally sized" tables, it should work.
    Regards,
    Gerd
