Please help! Snow Leopard MacBook - Can't update anything I need.

I have an older MacBook and everything I try, I can't seem to get it to update to Yosemite. I have an Iphone 6 and can't even download Itunes because my computer will not allow it. Can anyone help.

Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
     Snow Leopard General Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
       2. 1GB of memory
       3. 5GB of available disk space
       4. DVD drive for installation
       5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
           fees may apply.
       6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
           terms apply.
Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
    OS X Mavericks/Yosemite - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
         1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
         2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
         3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
         5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
     Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
     Lion System Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
           or Xeon processor
       2. 2GB of memory
       3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
       4. 7GB of available space
       5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

It's not a bug. Although Logic 8 will run under 10.7.x and 10.8.x the installer contains PPC code which simply does not run in 10.7.x, 10.8.x and 10.9. The app is fine, the installer is the issue.
Some research on this issue has led me to the conclusion that the commonly held conception that the installer has PPC code is flatly incorrect.
That misconception is due to the fact that the PowerPC dialog box is triggered by any attempt to launch the installer app.
The "bug" I reference triggers this dialog box; not PPC code within the Logic Pro 8 app.
At the end of the day, the result is the same: the installer app will NOT work in Mt. Lion without modification.  I have been given a tip on how to make a modification that will allow an analogous program's installer app work in Mt. Lion, but since I do not have access to a copy of Logic Pro 8, I cannot test this theory.
So, yes, the best approach is to be sure it is fully installed before the upgrade!

  • I am an Idiot. Please Help!!! Can't update Macbook...

    Please Help!!
I have been trying for a while now to update my macbook and I am out of ideas. I've tried the combo and standalone installers and neither are working.
I am trying to update from OS X 10.5.2 to OS X 10.5.8.
When I do the combo (automatic) update, It asks to restart the computer and once it restarts it tells me it is unable to install the update.
When I try the standalone update, it downloads and when i try to install it, It says "You cannot install Mac OS X Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
It says the same thing when i try to update to 10.5.4 or 5.6
    Please help me!!!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
How much hard disk space do you have available?
You've downloaded several combo updates, so you may have to delete one or more of those large (about 700Mb) .dmg files to make enough free space.
If you do have enough free space (at least 5GB, minimum space available), then run Disk Utility on your OS X volume (probably named Macintosh HD) and select Repair Permissions.
Let me also mention that if you don't have a recent backup of your system, it is ALWAYS ALWAYS a good idea to have a complete backup before attempting OS installations and upgrades.  If you don't already have a backup drive, large (1TB or larger) external USB 2.0 backup drives are relatively inexpensive, especially compared to the time and trouble of trying to recover without one! OS X 10.5 has Time Machine software, which is probably adequate for your backup needs.
Next, OS X 10.5.8 requires OS X 10.5.5 be installed first, so I'd download and install this one first:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_5_Combo_Update
If you successfully get to OS X 10.5.5, then run the 10.5.8 combo (that you've apparently downloaded already) http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If it still isn't working, is your User Account set to 'Admin'?
Go to , System Preferences, Accounts, and view your user identity. If you don't have Admin privileges, you'll have to have an Admin user do the upgrade.

  • Please Help- Snow Leopard SO SLOW!

    Hello-
I upgraded to Snow Leopard a few weeks ago without any problems (this was done at an Apple Store and everything went fine). About a week ago, however, I noticed that Safari 4 was constantly crashing and supremely slow. I decided to get rid of it and use Demeter. All was fine.
For the past few days, now, EVERYTHING is unbelievably slow! Whether opening an application, a document or just clicking on something- I immediately see the spinning colorful wheel; it can easily take 3 minutes for any application to open or a minute for words to type on the screen. I have plenty of memory and not many other applications than what Snow Leopard came with!
I am almost in tears- the degree of slowness has infiltrated everything on my Macbook and I can barely open files, applications or work online. I've even scrapped Demeter and tried going back to Safari, but nothing works.
I am at my wits end. Snow Leopard is supposed to be faster, yet my Tiger worked better than this and I'm almost to the point where even VISTA is looking pretty good! HELP. HELP. PLEASE HELP. Please don't let me lose my faith in Mac!
Is my only option to scrap everything and reinstall Snow Leopard? Is there any other solution? Did any one else have this problem?
    Many thanks in advance!

Well. Everyone. Things have become exponentially worse. Indeed, not only was I faced with the 'spinny wheel of death' (apparently, this term has even been coined already), but I was also hit with the 'Blue Screen of Death;' I tried a soft reboot (I think that's what it's called when you press the SHIFT key) and then restarted it normally to get it off the Blue Screen of Death.
Last night, my computer and I had a talk and it said to me: "Hi Yana- remember that time you looked at me the wrong way? Yah. Well. I do. Payback time."
As such, my computer and I are no longer on speaking terms. Currently, I am at the Apple Store waiting for the verdict. Oh yes, I came in with streaming, rolling tears as soon as the doors opened.
I'm HOPING they figure something out. Also- I noticed last night that certain things could not be verified whilst running Disk Verification AND (this morning) it tried to update iTunes and could not finish the update because of a verification problem? I don't know. I'm about to give up on life, lol.
In any case, I must thank you all so very much for the advice and encouragement- you guys may singlehandedly restore my faith in the mac-ers. I will let everyone know what happens in the Apple Store (it may help someone in the future).

  • My new macbook pro (Mountain Lion) will not log into my 1and1 server to connect to my e mail. My snow leopard macbook does not have this problem - Apple support say it is a 1and1 problem! do I have to wait for an update of Mountain Lion?

My new macbook pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.1) will not log into my 1and1 outgoing mail server. ( It will receive mail - but does not send)My old Snow Leopard macbook does not have the same problem ( server settings etc. are identical) . Apple Support say its a 1and1 problem , 1and1 say it is an operating System prob - I have tried changing port numbers.

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

i have a 2008 imac with snow leopard.  i installed update 10.9.3 not realizing it's best for Maverick's users.  Now my Itunes 11.2.2 won't burn playlists to CD.   Anyone else with this problem?  CAn I uninstall the 10.9.3 update?  Also my HP scannerwill not save the displayed scanned document since this update!  it just saves gray.

If you have your old system backed up then erase the drive and restore your backup. If you don't have a backup then backup your entire Home folder. Erase the drive and install Snow Leopard after which you can restore your Home folder from the backup.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Or you can:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).

  • If I upgrade my leopard computer to snow leopard via an old update disc, can I then upgrade to Mountain Lion for the $20 deal?

If I upgrade my leopard computer to snow leopard via an old update disc, can I then upgrade to Mountain Lion for the $20 deal?

Yes, provided  your computer meets the system requirements and you have updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.8:
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    I would also read this:
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
As an alternative to the above you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process.

The iPad 1 can't run the newer operating systems. It'd be like trying to play a bluray disc in your 6 year old dvd player....it simply lacks the hardware to make the software run.
No suggestion about the camera, but given that Apple's attitude seems to be to focus more on the more mobile devices for photography (the iPhone and Touch cameras got features, the iPad and mini didn't), that is highly unlikely. You can tell Apple what you want, but you'd probably be money ahead to get a digital camera.
as to the photos, anything put on via iTunes has to come off via iTunes.Your main alternative would be to look for photo apps that offer file exchange that may give you more functionality.
