Please Help...Start Up Disk

I have been getting a message that pops up very frequently thats tells me my StartUp Disk is almost full and that I need to Delete Files...
I have went through several times and deleted a ton of stuff and have saved only a few things extra other then what the Drive came with when I bought it.
Yet still I get this message and also sometimes it will tell me while I'm in Itunes or IPhoto that it is not able to Save my Librarys due to lack of space...I find it very hard to believe I have lack of space now
If I go into my Finder and click on my Macintosh HD disk, and get info...It tells me
Capacity: 232.457 GB
Available:87.2 MB
Used: 232.48 GB on disk
Is it possible I have some huge chunk of space being used up somewhere on my disk?
If so, how can I find out?
I know when I first got my MacBook I tried to use transfer stuff from my IMac onto it (if I recall correctly) using Migration Assistant but was never able to find it after the transfer on my MacBook
I assumed I never transfered anything
Please Help, I am afraid I may Crash soon
Thanks a million

Did you empty the trash?
Also, download the program WhatSize or Disk Inventory X (both should be available from www.versiontracker.com). Open them and have them scan your hard drive. They'll show you what items are using up space on your hard drive.
Make sure you take a look at the System>private>var>log folder--if it's large, you might have an issue we need to fix. If you're not sure what a file is, do NOT delete it--post the name here and we'll let you know if it's safe to delete.

  • Please help with ejecting disk from MBP that won't book

    I was in the middle of installing a Leopard update when my MBP froze.
    Since I had to tunr it off, it now won't start up.
    I tried a friends OSX install disk to get it working and it won't install.
    Please help me eject the disk.
    No matter what I do I cannot get it out.
    IS there a Terminal prompt to eject it.
    The install disks won't allow the command under disk utilities because it is starting up with that disk.

  • Please help - missing startup disk after attempted Leopard Install!

    I tried to install Leopard last night on my 20" iMac 2.4 ghz Intel machine. I went through the initial installation screens, and when it came to the "Select a destination screen," nothing showed up for about 20 minutes, so eventually, I restarted the computer, thinking it had froze [I have since learned that the computer was actually verifying the disk during that time, but of course, there's no progress bar to let you know that].
    Now, when I try to install Leopard, it says that I cannot install Leopard without a full erase and install. I suppose that would be fine - except I can't get to Tiger to back things up. My hard disk does not show up as an option in the "Startup Disk" utility, and sure enough, when I start up the computer, all I get is the flashing folder with the question mark. I've also tried running the Disk Utility to verify/repair my hard drive, but it continues to tell me the process failed, and I can't get beyond that point. Any thoughts for how to get back to Tiger, so I can get to my old files and backup! It seems ridiculous that basically putting the Leopard DVD into my hard drive would have made me unable to access my old files! Please help if you have any advice!

    Hope you found a better solution to your problem. I had the EXACT same situation. I used Data Rescue II to recover my files. It is really important that you NOT download it. Go to the Apple Store or another reseller and buy the disk, because you will need the Emergency Bootable Disk. Put it in your drive and hold down the 'C' button. When it loads, you'll be able to recover your files. THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT, THOUGH: You must have an external drive connected to your computer in order to copy the files from your hard drive. Good luck!!

  • Please HELP! = major disk issue - none of OSX "help" tools works (repair/time machine/reinstall)

    Hello to all,
    My first post, but directly with a very difficult case I suddenly encountered yesterday evening...
    When, as usually I opened the lid, it turned on from sleep, as usually, however frozen suddenly... so I did hard turn off... with ON/OFF button. When it turned on again, I had no possibility to put my password, but I was directly faced with "OSX tools" with 4 options (it is in Polish so I try the translation):
    1) Recover from Time Machine back up;
    2) Install OSX again;
    3) Get online help;
    4) Disk tool;
    I am totally ****** off how this could happen. There was so much stuff on the disk, including the whole Aperture libary with thousends of my daughter photos (she was born a year ago) - priceless stuff.
    I would never expect Apple to give me such an "experience"... never heppened to me on any PC's before..
    I have 2011 MacBook Pro 13" with Maverics.
    This is what I encountered using each of solutions:
    1) I use Synology DS209 for Time Machine backup (connected via Lan cable). As far as I remember backup is about 2 months old. Anyway when I choose this option. OSX tool finds the Time Machine in DiskStation, connects to "MacBook Pro" timemachine on the external disk, BUT cannot find any BACKUP further on!!!! I am lost!
    2) second, but not preferred option is OSX reinstallation.After initial analysis, and conditions acceptance, I cannot choose the only disk available. I can see only "recovery disk", but when I click on it, there is a message popping up "This disk is blocked". Obviously this prevents any further activities in reinstallation;
    3) Third option is BS clearly, no help at all.
    4) Disk tool shows me several disks / I am not an expert, so I am not sure how to understand it (Bold is active, standard non active):
    - 320,07 GB Hitach HTS54503...
         - Macintosh HD
    - Superdrive
    - disk1
         - OS X Base System
    I run "check disk" for Hitachi. No problems. Nothing to repair.
    I run "check disk" for Macintosh HD => This disk requires repair. So I run "repair". Quickly I get a message "Disk Tool is unable to repair this disk. Please backup as much data as possible, format the disk and recover the files from backup"..... Really????? How can I backup any files???
    DEAR COMMUNITY, please HELP!
    What to do in order not to loose any data on one hand and on the other be able to use the computer again?
    Please note I do not use "recovery CD" all is running without anything in CD/DVD drive.
    Thanks in advance for your answers, competence and experience!

    You are in a bad situation, because the internal drive has malfunctioned and your only backup is on a device that is not suitable for use with Time Machine, despite what its manufacturer says.
    You must try to make another backup now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible.
    There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Help Start-Up Disk full?

    hi- i keep getting warnings and sluggish i-movie, i-photo etc because of "start-up disc is full" can someone tell me how to solve this. where is the start-up disc???
    much thanks!
    evs-s

    hi,
    Your startup disk is your internal boot drive. On an eMac you only have one. It is named Macintosh HD by default and the icon for this, of course, appears on your desktop. Click on this icon and then select file-get info from the finder top menu. Under general, it will tell you the capacity of the drive and how much free space you have. You should want at least 10 percent free space though some will want more in order to keep the swap file on the faster parts of the drive. So if you have less then ten percent try taking a hard look at your files and see what you can archive to dvd/s or cd/s or an external firewire or usb drive. Once you have your files securely backed up, then delete them from your Macintosh Hd by dragging them to the trash and emptying it. If you know how to run optimization scripts then do that or just wait until the next update or the next app you install and it will be done automatically for you. If you absolutely can't handle deleting anything then you have to look at adding a newer larger internal drive in order to have more room. Drives are much bigger and much faster than what was shipped in that machine so it is not a bad way to go to speed your machine up. This can be difficult for some people to do on their own, however, but I will give you some links to other posts about the same issue. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4783269#4783269

  • Please help start with creating venn diagram

    I was wondering if anyone can give me suggestions on what type of java functionalities, resources, etc. to look up for creating a venn diagram application. I want to be able to click on regions and have it highlight and unhighlight. I also want to be able to drag and move circles around the canvas or window. Previously, I had just drawn on a canvas set circles at set locations; then, I had to go through many calculations just to get the area of the two circle overlap. There has to be an easier way... especially when getting to 3 or more circles, calculations would be more complicated. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Yes, the AWT-package contains much useful stuff regarding this topic!
    If you can manipulate these classes, you are almost there!

  • Please Help!  Photo Import has Suddenly Slowed to a Crawl -- 19 hours

    I have transferred 1,000s of RAW photo files to my HD and external HD with no problem, until a few days ago. Suddenly, what used to take about 3 hours now takes 19-24 hours. I can't figure it out.
    I've changed card readers, I've tried different memory cards, I've even downloaded to external HDs and tried to upload directly to my HD. I've also hooked up my camera and tried to transfer the files via a USB cable (traditionally the slowest way). I've also tried to upload using different software programs: Lightroom, iPhoto and Bridge.
    I've also ran the Disk Utility on my HD and there weren't any problems.
    Nothing works.
    Please help.

    If ran Disk Utility and only used +Repair Disk Permissions+, you may want to startup from another disk and run +Repair Disk+ (to look for and repair disk directory errors). If you don't have another bootable disk, you can startup from the Mac OS X (current version) installation disk. Insert disk and startup with the C key held down to start from the optical drive. When you get to the first Installer screen (after language selection), go up to the Utilities menu and select Disk Utility, then run +Repair Disk+ on your normal startup drive.
    Also, do you have sufficient free space on your hard drive? While you were move those 1000s of photo file around, did your startup drive ever get to less than 10GB free?

    Hello nicky:
    You should run repair disk from your software install DVD before you try anything else. The crash may have damaged some of your directories - and a possible cause of the "missing/not missing" tunes.

    My iMac does not start up as usual. I now get a ' start up disk is full. You need to make space available on your start up disk by deleting files' message.
    I am able to key my log on password however I just get the purple galaxy screen with no desktop.
    If I try to use the keyboard I get a tone when pressing the keys.
    Has worked perfectly well up until I got this dusk full message.
    Can anyone help please. Thanks

    Your going to have to follow the Data Recovery Efforts page here to be able to access your drive and remove files without booting the computer.
    You can't open the iMac so you will need OS X booted from a external drive or via Firewire Target Disk Mode using another Mac.

    I would concentrate on Movies as this is a big source of large files to free up room.
    Read Storage Drive here

    If you not handy with computers, your going to have to hire a local service or provide the info above to someone you know who can, it's not easy.
