Please help undo damage done by bad software download

How do I find out what settings a download changed to my MacBook Air? How do I permanently expunge all related files?
I downloaded what I thought was Flip4Mac and it was some piece of junk that polluted my computer; how extensively, I don't know, but I know it's changed my home pages in Chrome and Safari and consistently shuts them down after restarting them. It also seems to have affected my Mac Mail, too. I read in another post that there isn't a restore point like there is in Windows, but it wasn't helpful, so I'm hoping theres is still something that I can do? No, I don't have Time Machine; some message about not having AirPort or something prevents me from going any further with that program.
What I've done so far is to erase as completely as I know how from my computer all recent downloads, and associated files (from my Downloads folder), and dumped the trash. I've reset my home pages in Safari and Chrome, … and that's about it.
The "Installer" refuses to be ejected from the side bar in Finder, so I removed it from the side bar, but is it still lurking around in my computer? When I've tried to eject it, a message appears: The disk "Installer" couldn't be ejected because the Finder is using it. Stop the Finder action and then try to eject the disk again.
The Finder isn't using it - or shouldn't be…?
It's no longer showing in the side bar, but am wondering what else it will do.
I'd be grateful for any help. Thank you.

Hook your iPad into your computer and open iTunes. GIve it a couple of minutes to get going, then click on the name of your device, then the main summary page. In the middle you'll see a software update button/area. Click on check on updates and update and follow the prompts.
it SHOULDN"T redownload but if you've already got it should just install.
I'd suggest that you first do a complete sync before you update, that way you have a good backup to restore your device from if the upgrade doesn't go perfect.

In order to use your Apple ID to create an iCloud account, the primary email address associated with the ID must first be verified. To do this, Apple will send a verification email to your account and you must respond to the email by clicking the Verify Now link. Make sure you are check the spam/junk folder as well as the inbox. If it isn't there, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage your Apple ID, sign in, click on Name, ID and Email addresses on the left, then to the right click Resend under your Primary Email Address to resend the verification email.

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
          Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and check the box marked
          Allow Plug-ins
Then click
          Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.

Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:

If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

I see. Not good. Does this happen when you click on it in the Dock? What about in your home folder? What about in the Finder sidebar?
Standard troubleshooting things to try:
* Hold command-r while starting up to get into Recovery Mode. Run DIsk Utility and "Repair Disk". (This is probably a good idea in any case because of the possible disk errors which could accumulate due to all the freezing.)
* Hold shift down while starting up to get into Safe Mode. Does the bad behavior persist while in Safe mode?

Obviously, some srewed up downloads have been sitting in the download folder and causing a) crashes at start-up (since itunes will try immediately to continue the download after start up) and b) avoiding anything else to be downloaded (seems to be a kind of "first come- first to be downloaded"-arrangement).
I found several "downloads"-folders using Spotlight. Most likely, because I moved the iTunes library to access it from my account as well as from the account of my wife (at the same computer). I deleted all those downloads-folders and ... voila .. suddenly the downloads continued. Funny, that there have been more conflicts in the queue of app 20 files to be downloaded. Means, I could download 5 and the problem came back. I repeated the procedure and could continue with the remaining 15 files.
After all, iTunes' download behaviour is back to normal. Songs, movies, apps, podcasts can be downloaded without any issue.

Please Help My Daughter - iBook G4 Needs Software Upgrade ??

I have recently inherited an iBook G4 1.2 GHZ 256 RAM I think 30 or 50 GB. I cannot tell now because of what I did. The iBook was not working and I found it had a bad solder on one of the chips (a common issue on this model). Once repaired, it needed a new battery, and then it sprang right to life. The iBook worked great - I could use Safari, Garage Band, etc, but due to it's age, Itunes did not work and so I thought if I reinstalled the original operating system (Panther 10.3.5 circa 2004) from the original discs, then I could upgrade from there until I found an iTunes version I could use with a newly reset iPod I had and use it basically just for music. BIG MISTAKE. After I cleanly installed it all, I now cannot use Safari, profiler won't open and neither will most other applications - I double click them, they flash once and then go away on the sidebar. So, I need to find a way to upgrade this machine past 10.3.5 so I can get it to work. Right now, I can only get to the internet using ie for Mac 5.2 - UGH !!! Now I know why Apple stopped using that software. Anyway, I was doing all of this to get a clean version of iTunes on it so as a surprise, my daughter could sell it and the iPod to raise money for a class trip she is taking to New York in the Spring of 2015. Please please help me. Is it as simple as getting updated OS software? I have tried a Tiger disc, but it stopped before it really even got started and said it could not be loaded.    I can see the previous user still has files under user and I can see the folder for the previous system, but they are not accessible. I do have a 27" Mac desktop if that will help me to upgrade the iBook in any way. Thank you for reading all of this. Please let me know what options I might have to get this running so it can be sold off. IBook

New to mac, please help - installer damaged!!!

i apologize up front this may be scattered and rambling but i hope it makes sense, as i am in panic mode!
I was recently trying to update microsoft office 2008 mac and once the download was complete it tried to install and failed! It said "installer is damaged" this may be due to administrator privileges or disk permissions, etc... blah blah blah... I did a permissions repair right before the update
I have been using my iMac for about a month now, im somewhat familiar with it and everything is running fine... this is the first time i have been worried... is this the installer for that program? or my iMac?
I hope i can still install apps on my iMac... what should i do ?

When you say you tried to updated MS Office 2008 I'm assuming you already had it on your iMac and just tried to install the 12.1.5 update, is that correct? If it is I had a similar situation when I tried to update to 12.1.5. It wasn't an iMac problem it was an issue with the Office 2008. After calling MS support we did a complete uninstall of Office 2008 (don't worry you won't lose data files), then re-installed it and then downloaded the update. After doing the uninstall, reinstall and update it has been working just fine.
If you need help I would recommend calling MS, you will find the support number in it's documentation.

I purchased this mac book pro in the middle of 2014. So it's not even a year old. About 4 months after purchasing I noticed that I started to get pop ups that were opening new tabs. Okay, now we are getting somewhere. With a Core2Duo you can upgrade to at least Snow Leopard, and you will need Snow Leopard at least if you want to upgrade further.
1) Make sure your computer meets Snow Leopard technical specifications - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575 This mostly means making sure it is an Intel Mac (yours is) and has at least 1GB RAM (more is recommended). To check RAM, go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac". Now continue to "More Info...". It should say you have at least 1GB of "memory".
2) Apple no longer carries 10.6 in its stores or online. Telephone Apple to purchase a Snow Leopard disc. In the USA: (800) 676-2775 (contact information for other countries: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57)
Alternatively you can buy from online retailers but anticipate paying much more than the original price which is the price still charged by Apple
3) Backing up your computer before upgrading is always a good idea.
4) After installing from the DVD, update your Snow Leopard installation using Software Update or manually downloading and installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v.1.1 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399

Try booting into the Recovery HD which is on the HD. Restart holding down Command+r and at the screen with four choices select Disk Utility>Macintosh HD and click on 'repair disk'. If any changes are made click on repair disk again until you get a clear pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.
