PLEASE HELP!   Unsupported resolution/reinstall

Hi,
I have mini mac running latest snow leopard.  I used ResSwitcher and now when it boots up the monitor just shows "Out of range" as the resolution is obviously unsupported by my monitor.   I've tried 3 different monitors, all the same.
I don't have screen sharing enabled, if I did I could connect from my other mini mac and change the resolution.
So how can I reset the resolution???   I've tried booting with cmd, option and p r bit no go
All data is backed up on an external drive so figured I'd try to reinstall the OS, but when I boot to the OSX DVD it says cannot be installed on this mac!!!!!!
HELP!!!!!

I don't know the ResSwitcher application, but if you would have enabled Screen Sharing Im pretty sure you could have accessed your Mini.
Before you take any dramatic measures can you try the following:
Boot in Safe Mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455 for details), which should avoid ResSwitcher to load and either remove or reconfigure ResSwitcher.
Reset the System Management Controller (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 for details).
.... so figured I'd try to reinstall the OS, but when I boot to the OSX DVD it says cannot be installed on this mac!!!!!!
Various reasons for this, including trying to install an OS X version that is older than the one your Mini shipped with. Are you sure you use the correct disk and not the one one of your other Mini?

  • Please Help .. Reinstalling OSX10.4.x

I have a MacPro that is loaded with programs. I have a program that stopped working and when I go to reinstall I get errors. I'm a converted windows users so I admit I am not a Mac expert. However, I deleted every reference and receipt known for this program in hope of getting the program to reinstall normally. Well, now part of it installs but then it crashes. My question is, is there a way to only reinstall the OS but leave existing programs so that I have a clean OS install that will allow the program to reinstall properly? I am convinced there is a file somewhere in the system prohibiting a reinstall. Or like Windoze, am I going to have to do a fresh install?
    Any pointers are welcome.
    Thx.

Whoa, pardner! You can't backup the entire OS by drag and drop. If your other drive has files on it, then I suggest you create a new folder and put all the other files and folders into that folder so that you end up with a single folder on the drive. If the drive is empty then simply proceed as follows:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    5. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    7. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
You can reinstall OS X without erasing the hard drive (but don't skip the above.) To do that you will need enough free space on the drive for another OS X installation (5-6 GBs.)
    First:
    Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer. Do not quit the installer. See the following:
    Second:
Proceed with the installation process until you reach the point where you are asked to select a destination device. Click once on the desired drive then click on the Options button. Select the Archive and Install option. Read the article carefully regarding Archive and Install options. Click on the OK button and complete the installation.
I would, however, hold up on doing this until you get a reply from the ToonTracks support people. You wouldn't want to go through all of this only to find out it wasn't necessary.

  • Help!! Please!! Mac mini stuck on unsupported resolution!!

I was playing with sitchresx and went in to a unsuporrted resolution but my mac did not reverse the reolution so i cant go to settins to change resolution.. please help!! how do i change res! im using hdmi, please I only have my phone nd i need my computer for work!! im going to lose my job!! :'(

If you start the computer up in safe mode - hold the shift key down when you switch the computer on, and keep holding it down for say a couple of minutes since you may not be able to see anything on the screen.  You normally can release it once the spinning radial appears if you can see the screen.  Then let it complete the start up which may take several minutes.  Once it has finished you should see the screen as it will be in safe mode and it will have chosen a base resolution.  Now you can go in and change it to whatever you were using and you know works.  Then you can shut down and restart the computer and you should be back to normal.  Roy

  • I've just updated my iPhone to the new iPhone OS and now it won't work and iTunes won't recognise that it's there.  I've uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled twice and it's not working.  Please help.

I've just updated my iPhone to the new iPhone OS and now it won't work and iTunes won't recognise that it's there.  I've uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled twice and it's not working.  Please help.

I have not had wifi since November when I upgraded to the newest IOS version.  I called the Apple help line and they told me some things to do and I tried them all and they worked for a few hours and then wifi shut off again.  I kept doing what they told me and it worked for a couple more days and then I could never turn it on again.  My blue tooth doesn't work either.  I had to actually increase my data usage with AT&T becuase of this.  When I did that in December I went to the Apple store and was told that it is a hardware issue and since my phone is out of warranty I would have to pay for a new phone because they could not fix the issue.  My upgrade isn't up until June 2014 so not only do I have to wait for the upgrade and I am not paying for a new phone but I have to pay $10 plus extra a month on my cell phone bill because I was going over on my Data!!!  I have been beyond upset about this and Apple is not doing anything about this nor did they offer up some way to resolve the issue because obviously it is not just some rare incident if several people are having this issue.  Who knows how many people out there have had this issue and have not said anything about it.  Now there is a newer update that I can't do because it requires wifi in order to download.
June can not get here fast enough and I may not go back to Iphone after dealing with this for so long with no help from Apple.

  • How do I get rid of the Microsoft Setup Assistant loop? I migrated my software/documents from another laptop so don't have the disk to reinstall. Please help! Can't open any Microsoft Office software, like Word, and stuck in a loop?

I migrated my software/documents from another laptop so don't have the disk to reinstall. Please help! Can't open any Microsoft Office software, like Word (for 2008), and stuck in a loop?
Whenever I select Word Microsoft Setup Assistant appears, asks for feedback, then after selecting okay (both on saying yes or no to feedback) goes on to a registration page. When I click on this it says I've already registered so I just click okay, and then move on to a update page. After this, if I click on Word, the process repeats itself.
As I said, I don't have the disk to reinstall, and can't find the Office Settings to delete as many pages have suggested I should try. Safe Boot restarting also hasn't worked... Really stuck and need Word very soon for work.
If you can help, that would be great, and feel free to ask any questions about the situation as I'm not an expert here.
    Cheers,
    Jack

First, export your contact from iCloud.com and save them on your computer in a safe spot some where (like you desktop).  Use this to help you do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3606
Next, on both of your devices, go to Settings > iCloud and turn on contacts and select Merge. Then turn off contacts and select 'Delete form my [device]' when prompted.
Now go back to iCloud.com and select a contact (yes they will all be messed up again) and select Command+A on a Mac or Control+A on a PC to select all of the contacts.  Tap the delete key on your keyboard (or right click /control click a contact and select delete).
You iPhone, iPad and iCloud.com should not be empty for contacts.
Go back to Settings > iCloud on both devices and turn on contacts again (you should not see merge this time).
Next, go back to iCloud.com and import your contacts (those exported .vcards).  You can either drag and drop them into the empty contacts list in your web browser, or you can use the gear icon to import.
You cleaned up contacts should import correctly into iCloud.com and sync to both of your devices.
    Good luck.

"Where do I find my hundreds of dollars of downloads I have done since 2005?"
They will only be where you put them  If you are doing the very basics, then they will be on your computer and they will be in your backup copy of your computer.
The itunes store is not global at all, never has been. You cannot redownload your content from another country.  You can only use the countrys itunes store for the country that you are physically located.

  • ITunes wont open, cant uninstall, cant upgrade, cant reinstall. please help

recently, itunes decided not to open. no error message, no computer lockup, just not open. so when i tried to reinstall via add/remove programs, the installer opened, and acted normal, said it was validating install, then when it got to removing old program, it froze and a windowsey-looking error message popped up saying that "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavaliable" "click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'itunes.msi' in the box below" [dropdown+browse button]. the dropdown lists 2 file paths one being in the temp files in mydox and the other being in some application cache files in some system folder. neither works.
please help! im stuck! i have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, repairing, downloading the most recent and trying to install that, and even downloading an older version, and i all get the same error message.

a windowsey-looking error message popped up saying that "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavaliable" "click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'itunes.msi' in the box below" [dropdown+browse button]. the dropdown lists 2 file paths one being in the temp files in mydox and the other being in some application cache files in some system folder. neither works.
with those symptoms, let's try the following procedure.
first, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. if it goes, good. if it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to itunes.
next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to clear any existing itunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC.

next, use the the following document as a guide for manual removal of leftover itunes and quicktime program files:

Go here. Da Gopha, "iTfW: stepwise clean uninstallation of iTunes", 09:51am Apr 5, 2005 CDT and do a stepwise clean uninstallation of iTunes. That might help. Sometimes extra hidden files can muck up an installation.

  • Had to uninstall Firefox, now I can't reinstall. Get error message "Can not find archive file." Please help!

I believe I had some kind of virus attack. I got everything cleaned up. (I HOPE) In the process of cleaning the virus, I unintalled Firefox because it wouldn't open. Kept getting the error message that Firefox was already open and I had to close out of the sessions or restart the computer. After restarting the computer several times and not being able to find any open sessions in task manager, I uninstalled. When trying to reinstall, I get the error message "can not find archive file." I've tried downloading Firefox from cnet as well as the Mozilla site to no avail. Please help. I'm getting tired of using Chrome already!

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.
