PLEASE HELP! VOB file video + MPEG Streamclip = ??????

I really, really need to convert a VOB video file to some other format so I can edit it. This is a studio produced televised interview which I want to chop into 304 minute segments and post on Youtube and my web site.
I read the discussion (#1936489) about saving .VOB files as MPEG2 files ... and I went out and downloaded Streamclip, as suggested. However, when I select File>Open files... and select the VOB file from my studio-produced video, and the program supposedly loads the video, there appears to be nothing there (time shows 0:00:00,00) and when I attempt to convert it to an editable file (File>Convert to MPEG...), the processing window opens for about one second, then says "conversion done" (now, this is a 900+Mb file!), but the saved file has nothing in it (it's 24Kb in size).
What am I doing wrong? or do I need to take another tack altogether?

so, this DVD contains 304 mins = 6h content? exotic... I mean: extremely high compressed, isn't it?
• do you select 'Open DVD'?
• or do you 'Open File'? which vob did you select?
usually, MpegStreamclip notices automatically, 'Would you like to open all files of this stream?'
did you follow Nick's advice to copy the DVD first onto your harddrive (converting 'direct from disk' mostly fails..)

  • Converting VOB files with MPEG Streamclip

I'm trying to convert the video from a DVD camera to a format I can edit then burn to DVD. I have a few questions.
    1. I copied the files from the DVDs to my hard drive. The folder contains .vob, .ifo, and bup files.
Are the other files needed or just the VOBs? Can I delete the others?
    2. Per the recommendations in this forum, I downloaded MPEG Streamclip 1.9 to convert the files
from .vob to another format that I can edit in Final Cut Express. When I load the file and then
when I attempt to export it stops me and tells me that I must download apple's MPEG 4 playback
    component.
Is this all I need to do to export into another format, or will I have to add another
    program/component?
What would be the best format to export to if the purpose is to edit in FCE then burn to DVD?

Yes, you'll need the MPEG2 component (not 4). That will do it for the purchased software stuff.
Export to Quicktime DV/NTSC (or DV/PAL if that's the local standard).
    Have fun.

  • No audio in Quicktime AVI files in MPEG Streamclip

When I import a Quicktime AVI file into MPEG Streamclip to edit, there is no audio. Annoyingly, if I convert that AVI file into an MP4 file and then import it into Streamclip the audio is working; but the loss of image quality is not acceptable. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • PLEASE HELP: movies converted to Mpeg-4 files won't sync to ipod

    hi,
i created some movies in avi format, used quicktime to convert to mpeg-4 files, pulled them into itunes and they play fine. however, when i try to sync/transfer them to my ipod, it won't let me. i have taken all symbols except for alpha/numerical out of the file names, and it makes no difference. ANY help would be appreciated.
    thanks...

Just because they are in mp4 format does not mean they are iPod compatible.
Files must conform to these standards:
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

  • Please help my flv video file works perfectly localy...but its not visible in remote ftp why??

    hi All,
Please help me. my flv video file works perfectly localy in
my computer...but its not visible when i uploaded the flv html and
    flash files to ftp?
    thanks in advance

This suggestion worked to see the hidden folder(s). Thanks very much, but I feel like I am miles away from moving my ipod music to my new computer and getting it all to work. Here is why...
    1. First when I plug the ipod in, in disk mode, to the USB slot it shows up as a K drive for a minute or so and then disappears. itunes keeps opening, asking me to sync (which will erase all my music on the ipod!) and the K drive (ipod) vanishes.
    2. I pod help says to drag the itunes file out to the desktop and then drag the itunes file on the ipod into the "my music" file within documents and settings. However, there is an "ipod control" file (was hidden) and within this there is the following: artwork, itunes (with 13 subfolders of its own), device, and music. So do I just drag the itunes file inside ipod control into My music? Or do I drag the whole ipod control file? or other?
    3. Additionally there are K drive (ipod) files for calendar, photos, contacts, notes, and ipod control (was hidden). I don't care about any content in the first four, but are they needed to operate? Do I drag these over also to the My music file?
    Whew, very frustrating. Thanks, Ric

  • How to save VOB files as MPEG-2

I have some home made DVD's that a family member made for me. I want to rip and save each VOB file on the DVD to my harddrive in MPEG-2 format. It is my understanding that VOB is the same thing as MPEG-2, which is why I want to save the VOB files as a MPEG-2, so I dont lose quality; size and space is not a concern.
I used to be able to do this with ease on Windows using a program called Magic DVD Ripper. You would insert the DVD, select the VOB files you wanted to copy, and it would spit out the MPEG-2 equivalent, which could then be read by almost any video player without any loss in quality.
I have tried using MPEG streamclip (after purchasing the MPEG-2 component for quicktime) thinking that the program could perform this task, but it only saves as MPEG-1. I have also tried Handbrake, but it wont do this either.
Are there other ways to accomplish this task, or am I missing something? Thanks for any help.

As a practical matter, you can't please everybody, and there is no universal format that everyone can read.
I would suggest that for playback, you save your movies as h.264. This is a compressed but high quality codec that can be played on any computer that has QuickTime Player. Any Windows computer with iTunes probably has QuickTime Player, and if they don't, it is a free download.
For watching yourself, still go with h.264 (which is a subcategory of MP4). You can easily watch it in QuickTime Player, iTunes, AppleTV, etc.
For editing, I would use MPEG Streamclip to convert the VOB files to Apple Intermediate Codec in the original dimensions. When I do this, I also have MPEG Streamclip deinterlace as part of the conversion to AIC. After editing, render the movie in h.264.

  • Can't import into iMovie even after converting files with Mpeg streamclip

    Hi,
I have been trying to create iMovie proejcts with .mpeg, .mpg, .mpa. IMovie could not import the files (it tells me it's an uknown error). Then, using mpeg streamclip and exporting the files to quicktime, DV and Avi (tried all the formats that I knew iMovie would support) iMovie still wouldn't import the files.
What am I doing wrong? I have the latest version of iMovie.
    Please Help!
    Thank you!!!

Have you done the conversion like this:
To convert a DVD or MPEG to DV with MPEG Streamclip (v1.8 or later): Open a desired .VOB on a DVD (DVD/VIDEOTS/VTS_011.VOB, for example) or a MPEG file.
Select the In/Out points if you want to extract just a portion of the video.
Choose "File/Export to DV.../Compression: DV (DV25)". Choose the same video format (PAL/NTSC) as the iMovie project is.
Choose "Split DV stream in Segments" if the content is more than 9 minutes 27 seconds because iMovie 1-4 can't reliably handle longer clip files and it might be a good idea to limit the converted .dv file's size anyway (segmented clips play seamlessly in iMovie).
...and is there enough room on the HD where the iMovie project is? 60 minutes of .dv is 13 GB and iMovie duplicates an imported .dv file so you need 26 GB/hour (unless you use the secret shortcut that prevents the duplication .

  • Exact import settings for .mov files via MPEG Streamclip?

Ok, as I mentioned in this other thread , I'm looking to import some files recorded at an odd resolution into FCE.
Resizing my 512x288 files to 720x480 looks like it works, as well as with my 640x480 ones (don't know how it'll ultimately mess with the quality)... but I did do a test using some footage from 3 different video sources with different native resoultions, a)720x480 Sony DV Cam, b) 512x288 captured by helmet cam on Archos PMA 430, and c) 640x480 captured on Canon SD600, as well as .jpeg photos at 640x480 res.
I changed the odd sizes (Archos & Canon) to 720x480 using MPEG Streamclip, resampling the sound uncompressed at 48 khz, using the Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC compression option. Importing these files into FCE, I mixed them and the Sony standard footage, and a few pictures up on a timeline, rendered it and exported it to a QT file, then burnt a CD. It appears to have worked to my satisfaction.
My question is, before I go and convert about 60 5-10 minute clips to this 720x480 resolution for use in a full length documentary, are there any settings I should be ticking off on the MPEG Streamclip interface to maximize the likelihood that the final project will work as well as the test did?
Below are the options I selected in the test, which seemed to work:
    MPEG STREAMCLIP
    Compression: Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
    Quality: 100%
    Sound: Uncompressed Stereo 48 KHZ
    Frame Size: 720x480
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Checked boxes for:
    -Frame Blending
    -Better Downscaling
    -Interlaced Scaling
    Zoom: 100%
    X/Y: 1
    Center: 0,0
    Field Dominance: Upper field first
That's about it. I tried doing similar conversions in a trial version of DIVX Converter pro, but the quality was noticibly lower than in MPEG streamclip. Maybe I just had the wrong settings in it.
Anyway, Tom Wolsky has mostly got me on the right track in the last post "...so the material needs to be a .mov QuickTime file in DV NTSC, at 29.97fps, audio should be Linear PCM with a sample rate of 48KHz, and frame resolution of 720x480 using the CCIR601 digital video aspect ratio... be warned you're scaling up a very, very heavily compressed video stream, so it's going to look less than optimal when you make it DV. I can't believe they can do 192kbps at that frame rate, when DV, which is heavily compressed as well, is 3.5MB/sec."
I have no idea if what I described in my test is heavily compressed or not, so couldn't really say how the settings I mentioned above affect Tom's latter advice.
Anyway, any help would be welcome before I encode all these files. Thanks.
iMac 17-inch 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4)

I'm kind of confused because the only settings I could find on the Handycam for audio are 12 khz and 16 khz, and though I think I filmed them at 12, I've captured the footage at both within FCE... I'm not sure either have shown any probs when imported at 48 khz as yet. Not sure if that's because they are a multiple of 48 or I just got lucky. Either way, 1) does the audio bit rate the footage was captured at (12 khz) change to 16 if changed on the camcorder (or is it solely what the original was filmed in, period) prior to capture on FCE, 2) and if so or if not, how serious of a problem will it pose, if I do nothing and keep the FCE settings at the normal NTSC 48khz, in later stages of production considering there will be a lengthy timeline?

  • File open error: unsupported file type Mpeg Streamclip

having a problem... I am using mpeg streamclip to convert vob files from a dvd. the problem is that the program says that the first vob file is an unsupported file type. I know that this is not true. The DVD plays, and the remaining vob files are opened and processed by the program correctly. Any advice or suggestions?

I am having the same problem. The first VOB file in the sequence will not open in either Streamclip or Quicktime. This is not the menu display image, but the first chunk of the video (the menu image actually will open). All the ones after it can be opened either individually or joined as a group.
The DVD plays fine on the mac and also in the regular DVD player. Any idea if this is perhaps some equipment fault when the DVD burner "finalizes" the disk? Am using a combo VHS/DVD-R unit. It is not super high-end, but then neither are these old home videos I'm converting.

  • Please help me - importing videos

Please help me if you can... I just finished converting a video on Videora, and now I have located the file, but I cannot drag and drop it into iTunes. I have tried going to File > Import... locating the file, and entering it, but that has not worked. Then I tried putting the file as a desktop icon and dragging and dropping it into iTunes, but that appeared to have failed also. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated - please!

I have the same problem too. I downloaded videos from limewire and it says that its a WAV file or something but its really quicktime. Maybe I have that backwards but I wonder if it can be converted to the correct file that the ipod plays.

  • Please HELP very important video lost after restoring from backup

I used my iphone 4 to record me preposing to my fiance and then today I stupidly sync to computer and restore from my 3GS backup before backing up the video files. Is there anyway to get the video back? Please help this is the most important thing in our life. Anything, Anyone please help. I am very devastated right now!

Too be honest. If you recorded the video on the iPhone 4, and then synced the iPhone 4 to iTunes to the computer it is usually connected to, then the video should be backed up.
I'm not sure though, how you managed to have your iPhone 4 up and running, but then restore from a backup from your 3GS?? If you have synced your iPhone 4 to iTunes before, then the backup will have been from the iPhone 4. You get the option the first time you connect the iPhone 4 to iTunes, to either setup as a new device or restore from a backup (that's if you have had a iPhone previously). You can restore the iPhone (which would set it up has a new device, which would remove everything off of it). If you have done this, has far as I know the old information off of the iPhone, would be still there until you synced the iPhone to iTunes again.
In Windows, the library file for iTunes is in username (whatever you are called) music/iTunes, the library file is called iTunes Library.itl, also in this location is the iTunes/iTunes Media folder, in there should be any video/s that have been synced from your iPhone.
Other information off of the iPhone are in the following location:
(You will need to first make sure you have Windows set to show hidden files & folders), Username/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer
I hope you manage to find your video.

  • Please help with File input!

This is my first time dealing with file I/O and need help figuring out the best way to read in data and store it for further manipulation. I have a file that contains an individual's salary, and 3 product ratings on each line, such as: 75000 01 05 09
What is the best way to store this data? I know how to use BufferedReader and how to tokenize each integer. I must write this program to deal with any number of lines in a file. There are three income brackets, and I must also be able to perform the following calculations:
    a) For each income bracket, the average rating for each product
    b) The number of persons in Income Bracket $50000-74000 that rates all three products with a score of 5 or higher.
    c) The average rating for Product 2 by persons who rated Product 1 lower than Prodcut 3.
Thus far, I've written the following code to open the file and perform 2 reads to get the total number of lines (individuals) and the total number of inidividuals in each income bracket. It compiles, but I get a null pointed exception at StringTokenizer, for some reason.
Please help! Do I need to take lines in as arrays? (tried this, but don't understand how to get at individual data) Do I need to somehow create objects for each person (if so, how?). My reference text covers this area poorly. Thanks for all help.

I haven't encountered this tuzz. Can you tell me what's the operating system of your computer? My N86 8MP says it's Phone Memory. Even if I have builtin 8GB, but it's labeled as mass memory aside from my micro SD card.
What I can suggest is don't select PC suite instead choose the mass memory option when you connecting your phone to your computer using the Nokia PC Suite. Let me know if you encounter the same problem for the C: drive.
