Please Help, What's the best way to un-install Leopard?

I have a new MBP 17" . I installed Leopard 2 days after I bought the machine, am having so many keyboard problems, like not being able to type and waiting around for the keyboard to start typing. It has now become very annoying and I cannot get any work done! I think I should un-install Leopard and go back to Tiger. How can I do this successfully and without losing any data. I will back up..... If any one has the answer to this it will be great. I also think that apple knows about this issue, and I think it's really bad policy on their part, not to simply say, WE ARE FIXING IT...... In-fact I think it's downright stupid of them!

What I meant with external backup is either an external hard drive or another mac where you have a copy of all your important files/applications and you should be able to use Migration Assistant with either. If you want to use MA, it will copy all the files (you can't pick and choose), so what I did was simply connect my external hard drive to the new MBP via firewire and copied over whatever I needed. Since I also keep copies of all installer .dmg's (updates or applications) on the external, I copied those over as well and then just installed my (some third party) applications and/or updates. If you don't have an external hard drive, you should also be able to connect your Powerbook and new MBP via ethernet cable and copy your files over. I used that method as well, using my internet ethernet cable (temporarily disconnected from my cable modem) and following the directions under Mac Help -> Filesharing. I've found both the firewire and ethernet methods easy and quick and they worked for me because I wanted to pick which files I wanted to copy to the new machine (rather than all of them).
I will wait for quite a while before installing Leopard again (if at all); not only because of the keyboard issue, but Disk Utility seems to have some major problems, and so does the System itself (showing up during 20+ minutes of every Permissions Repair with 71 full pages of "ACH found but not expected in..." listing what seems to be every single system file). I also prefer to open the contents of a folder from the dock in alphabetical order, rather than the admittedly cool looking icons - when you have 120+ items/folders in that folder, it's a waste of time to get through all of those icons. And Spaces didn't work for me either. So, except for the cool desktop picture, I wasn't at all impressed with Leopard. However, I did use the included iLife 08 (except iMovie 08) and custom installed that once I had Tiger up and running.

  • What is the best way to re-install Windows XP in Boot Camp?

I installed Windows XP on my Boot Camp partition on my MacBook for several months. Recently I have had serious problems with Windows Explorer (If I right click or try to copy, delete, drag files, it crashes). I've decided to just to do a clean install of XP and start over. What is the best way to do this?
I realize that I can just remove the partition through Boot Camp assistant, but I have read people on the web have had some issues doing this. I've read that to Erase and reformat the Windows partition" is easier to do.
There is also something called "Perform a Repair Installation" inside Windows XP. This would be preferable because I think this would allow all my applications to stay present. I don't have problems with my applications, just Explorer. Can I do this inside my Windows partition as if it were a normal Windows computer? This would be the best solution if it's possible.

    Axel,
Unfortunately System Restore didn't work. I tried a few dates, but what happened is it said it couldn't restore and that my computer remained unchanged. So I will move on to the next stage. Reinstall Boot Camp drivers (I don't think that will help because they've worked flawlessly for so long) and then do a REPAIR WINDOWS.
But I am going to wait until the weekend when I don't have work and can make sure I have a full backup, plus numerous other things, like doing uninstalls on some programs so that I can reinstall them should I end up with a totally complete new installation.
My experience with Windows over the decades is that a lot of their utilities don't work as promised. That's what just happened with System Restore. So if I have a problem with REPAIR WINDOWS, do I just format my windows drive within Windows and reinstall, or what? Do I have to go back to OS X, eliminate the Windows partition, and start at the beginning with a new BootCamp and Windows installation? I'm asking, because once I get started I want to have a full road map.
Also to clarify, this is with my MacBook. I have no problems with Windows on my Mac Pro.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Upgrading to SSD, what is the best way to clean install and transfer my files over?

I am upgrading to an SSD and I would like to start clean by doing a fresh installation of Yosemite on the new drive. However, I still want all of my personal files from my current hard drive, like my music, music libraries, photos, and Home folder, transferred over to the new drive. What is the best way of doing this?
I have Time Machine and a Time Capsule. Could I simply restore a Time Machine backup, or will that defeat the purpose of doing a clean install?
Should I just back up the home folder and transfer the home folder onto an external drive, then drag the home folder to my new drive? Will that save my iTunes playlists and music?
I don't need to transfer apps over so I'm not worried about that. Just my documents, files, pictures, music.

How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Boot From a Recovery HD:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"COMMAND" and the "R" keys together.
      3. Release the keys when the Utilities Menu appears.
After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard and later.)
For Lion or later select Disk Utility from the Utilities Main Menu.
After Disk Utility loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the Disk Utility status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If Disk Utility reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the Recovery HD on the external drive, then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
      1. Open Disk Utility from the Utility Main Menu, then click on the Continue button.
      2. After Disk Utility loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the Disk Utility main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition/Apply button and
wait until the process has completed.
      4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
          window.
      5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
          return to the Erase window.
      6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
      1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      3. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

  • What's the best way to (re)install Logic Studio? Need Help.

I bought Logic Studio a few months ago and installed it on my new MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz with 2G Ram, 160G hard drive @ 7200 rpm. Being new to Logic, at install, I just put all 40+ gigs of content on the computer. After a while I considered putting the Apple Loops (roughly 12gigs) onto an external hard drive to save space on my computer, just to see if it would work, then consider moving more content over later. After doing this the Logic application couldn't find the Apple Loops, and I couldn't find a way to help it see the new path, so my Apple Loops were essentially rendered useless (since I had already deleted them from the computer). So I stopped right there, and haven't done anything else. Just worked with Logic without using Loops, which I have to say is still an incredible program.
What also seemed strange was this: In moving the Apple Loops, the available disk space on the computer didn't seem to change much. It went down a few gigs, but not the 12 or so I was expecting. Not sure why that is. It seems like Logic and all the content is actually taking up around 50 gigs or so on my computer (and the Apple Loops are supposedly gone or not available). What is that about?
Feeling like I had really fouled things up, I called Apple Care. They said that the content of Logic is stored in many places in the computer's libraries and system folders, but it was really confusing trying to locate all of it, because the info they sent was from Logic 7 and older versions of GarageBand. I guess Logic 8 is too new for them to have anything on it. There is no uninstall for Logic Studio. But they strongly recommended that I perform an Erase and Install, and then re-install all my software including Logic, and then assign the hard drive I wanted the content in. That would open up a lot of the computer's hard drive space, they said. It seemed like an extreme measure to take for such a small blunder, and I haven't tried it yet, but will if it's the best option.
If I do this, is running Logic content (i.e. Loops, Impulse Responses, Jam Packs, etc.) from an external hard drive (and the one I have to use is 5400rpm--is that too slow or am I getting too picky?) the best way to go, or should I have all Logic material coming from the same machine? How do I get some of my hard drive space back?
    Ugh.
Has anyone out there experienced this too? Is there anything documented about where the content is stored for Logic Studio? Is Erase and Install really the best thing to do in this situation?
    So many questions...
    Thanks.

    Hey Blue,
Let me see if I can help you a bit.
Logic Studio has 28+ gb of loops. Almost 23 for STP and 6 for the Jam Packs, etc. They should be located in /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple (that's the default install loc.). Copy them to an external drive and then delete them from your main drive. Go to /Library/Audio/Apple Loops Indexes and delete those text files. Now go to /Library/Preferences/Soundtrack Pro and delete those text files, too (more Loop Indexes).
Now open Logic Pro and it will say 'No Apple Loops found'. Click 'OK' and then open your Loop Browser. Drag all the Jam Pack folders, STP folder, etc. that you want to use onto the Loop Browser. Logic will ask you if you want to 'Copy to Loops Folder' or 'Current Location'. Choose 'Current Location'. Logic will now index the loop folders.
NOTE: You can change the names of the folders to suit your liking. For example: I added the 2, 3, 4, 5 after the Jam Pack names to make it look smoother on the popup menu and changed iLife Sound Effects to Sound Effects - iLife and Apple Loops for STP to STP. Now the Jam Packs 1-5 come up first on the popup menu and the FX stay at the bottom. I likee!!
Now, if you like you can take your EXS Factory Samples and Ultrabeat Samples, 3.35 & .889 gb respectively, and copy them to an external drive. I have mine in the same place as my Jam Packs, etc. You can find these files in /Library/Application Support/Logic. Toss out the originals and put ALIASES from the external drive back into the /Lib/App Sup/Logic folder.
Also, if you open STP and click the Search tab in the right pane you will see a button that says 'Setup' next to it. Click that and you can use the checkboxes in the window to activate/deactivate any of the loop folders available.
A clean install is the best IMO if you have a little time because a) you DO NOT have to install GB at all (that saves the .aif file size - Logic Studio uses .caf files at half the size of the originals) b) Logic Studio will install the extra GB or Logic 7 content if you need it at it's reduced size. It will basically get rid of all the old clutter that you do not need. Only install what JP's you want and move the bigger stuff to an external.
Rock up Logic and it should all be in place. That procedure saved me 32.5 gb on my main drive.
NOTE #2: You have another 12 gb (if you installed all Jam Packs) that reside in the /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler. These are the Jam Pack Instruments & Sampler files for World, Symphony, etc. They cannot be moved from the startup HD (as far as I can tell). So keep that in mind if you don't want a certain JP.
    Hope that helps,
    Dave

  • What is the BEST way to upgrade from Leopard to Tiger?

My current set-up is noted below. The main "Macintosh HD" is 250 GB's in size and is fairly filled up with programs and plug-ins. (I own Logic Studio 8 and Final Cut Pro Studio 2, as well as Adobe's CS4 Web Premium Suite.)
Prior to doing the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, I wish to ensure that I get back to my current set-up should any problems arise. Off hand, I can think of a couple of options to chose from to ensure a proper backup :
    1) Cloning the current disk drive on another drive in the Mac Pro prior to the upgrade.
    2) Purchasing a new, larger disk drive for the Leopard upgrade and safely storing the original drive containing Tiger.
Maybe there are more ways to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard with a dependable "back-up"??
No matter how I ensure a back-up of my current drive, I will install Leopard as a clean install.
What would be the BEST way to do the upgrade with proper back-up?
Thank you in advance for your time and input.
    Ted

    I suggest the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • What is the best way to re-install my apps data when changing the hard disk

My MacBook (120Gb disk) is finally full and I have ordered a 500Gb disk to replace it.
I am fine with changing over the disk but can anyone tell me the best way to reload all my apps and data from the present disk please?
I have a Time Machine backup on a Network disk, a copy of SuperDuper and also my original 10.5 OSX install disks.
    Thanks

Roger, since you have SuperDuper, I think the easiest thing to do would be to make a clone of your current hard drive to the new one when it arrives. You will need an external enclosure for the new drive; make sure it's formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled); Disk Utility will do this for you. Then connect that new drive via firewire or USB, and create the clone from your current drive using SuperDuper. Next, remove the internal drive from your Mac, insert the new drive and boot up. You can then place your older drive in the external enclosure to use for extra storage, though it won't be large enough to use as a cloned backup with SuperDuper.
    Good luck!

  • Do I get better results/ keeping the battery's life longer by charging only when it comes to 5-10% or should I let it empty and then charge it? Someone told me also to turn it off while I charge it... So help what is the best way to keep long life battery

I got the new iPad on June 2012 and I wish to keep the long life of the battery as much as I can. I always and only use the cable that comes with the product and never charge it through computer.
    Should I:
    1) wait till baterry is completely empty, pratectly dead and then charge it?
    2) charge it when it reach 5%-10%.
    3) turn off the iPad when I charge the battery?
    Thank you apple support :)

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Need help - what is the best way to move CS5 from my old XP machine to a new Win 7 64 bit platform?

Is there a preferred method to do this?

While saving your actions and brushes into files that can be loaded into the new installation is a good idea, I'd STRONGLY recommend against trying to copy your settings (i.e., the "internal" settings files) because they might have machine-specific stuff in them that will cause heartburn on the new machine.
    Here's an idea:
    1.  Install Photoshop CS5 onto your new system.  You get two activations with one license, so there's no rush to deactivate the old one just yet.
    2.  Set up your workspace the way you like it on your new system, and save it as a named workspace.
    3.  Methodically go through all the settings (Edit - Preferences, and the fly-out menus on the panels) on the new system.
    4.  Jot down all the changes you make so you can do it again if ever you should need to.
    5.  Keep both machines for a little while so you can go back and see the old settings if something seems different.
    6.  Deactivate Photoshop on the old system before permanently retiring it.

  • What is the best way to run/install games onto an external HDD?

I would like to either install Windows on another partition on my 256GB SSD on the new rMBP and run games off an external, or install Windows on an external and games as well. What would be the most efficient (price wise) way to do this without having to sacrifice speed? I was thinking I could use an external thunderbolt hard drive, but it seems like they are all over $300 and over 1TB. I would only really need around 500GB with preferably 7200RPM speeds. Would USB 3.0 be fast enough or would I need to use thunderbolt? I prefer not to have to install 30GB games on the Windows partition on a small 256GB SSD, though I guess I could uninstall and reinstall them as I need (but does this wear down the SSD write speeds over time?) I couldn't get myself to pay another $600 to get a 512GB SSD logic board on the rMBP.
Thanks for any help. If there are alternative solutions for running games on an external feel free to recommend them.

If it is possible to install Windows on an external HDD without Bootcamp, then I'd be fine with that. The only problem I see with that is installing the necessary boot files, but it seems like it could be possible to do it manually. I've never done it before though.
Running programs off an external should be fine so long as they don't have to access Windows OS files directly (supposing Windows was installed on the internal SSD), no?

  • What is the best way to get rid of duplicates in the XML data?

    Hi all,
Please help me with the best way to get rid of the duplicates in the XML data. Will a transform with some stylesheet do the trick? I need to read on the stylesheet first, but please tell me if that is possible. I have to deal with XML data that has tons of duplicate data. Please see one section of an XML file. You can see that for each charge, the same defendant information (address, ID numbers, etc) is included. Having 10 charges is not uncommon, so I would have the same data repeated 10 times. I first thought that I would use some temp tables to do that, but I wonder if there were a better way. Thanks a lot. Please see the data below.

  • My wife and I share an Ipad.   We each have our own email address and calendar.   What is the best way for us to backup both accounts (we currently only have 1 ICloud account)?   Thanks for any help!    Alan

My wife and I each have our own email address and calendar.  These are on one IPad.   The Ipad has a single ICloud account.
What's the best way to backup both Calendars, etc?   Does ICloud automatically back up every account on the same IPad?  (I checked ICloud, but I could only find my stuff.)
    Thanks for any help!
    Alan

First, you need to understand that there's a difference between "syncing" and "backup".  Backup is the saving of content and settings, where syncing is the bidirectional transfer of content for an account to a web-based server (like iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.)
If you see your calendar in your iCloud account, that implies that you have set up your iCloud account to host (sync) your calendar, and perhaps contacts, email, and notes.  An iCloud account can only sync one user's information at a time so it is intended to support a single user.  You can have more than one iCloud account, and you can even have more than one iCloud account on the same device (but one has to be primary, and the secondary iCloud has limited capabilities), but a single iCloud account only supports a single user's content.
Backup is the saving of your device's content and settings to use in case you need to recover these things, but you can't see the contents of your backup (just the size and device name).  You can backup more than one device to iCloud and you can backup to iCloud or you can backup to your computer, or both (one at a time though, you have to choose).
So, if your wife has her own email and calendar she can certainly do that in parallel to whatever account(s) you have for email and calendar.  But if you have only one iCloud account then only one of you can use it for email, calendar, etc.  But the backup of these accounts is really just a backup of the device's settings that link the device to these accounts. For example, if she uses Gmail then the backup of the iPad only backs up the fact that your iPad is set up to use her account, it does not backup the account itself (the content of her account is saved and preserved on Google's servers, not your device's backup).
    Does that make better sense?

  • I finally was successful in burning a CD of a slideshow I created in iPhoto, however, it is blurry. What is the best way to burn to a CD or DVD for clarity. Also, I realize if burned in iPhoto it will only be playable in iPhoto. Help! This is needed soon!

I finally was successful in burning a CD of a slideshow I created in iPhoto, however, it is blurry. What is the best way to burn to a CD or DVD for clarity. Also, I realize if burned in iPhoto it will only be playable in iPhoto. Help! This is needed soon for a wedding reception!

What version of iPhoto are you using?  How do you plan to view the slideshow at the wedding reception, on a TV screen?  If so then you will need to send the slideshow to iDVD and burn a disk from there.
If you're in iPhoto 11 and the slideshow was created in the slideshow mode and not from an album, then go to the Share menu and select iDVD.  That will create a QT movie of the slideshow and import it into iDVD.
In iDVD select your theme and setup the menu as you'd like.  If you want the movie to begin plahying immediately when the disk is inserted into the DVD player go into the Gallery mode and drag the movie into the Autostart  bin at the left.
If you want the movie to loop continuously go to the Advanced menu and select Loop.
When you're finished setting upb the iDVD project save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will allow you to check it with DVD Player before tryingto burn to disk.  Mount the disk imnage by double clicking on it and launch DVD Player and play.  If the movie plays as you want and everything is good you can  burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

I purchased iMatch because my old computer was failing and I was afraid of losing my music library. Now I bought a new laptop; what is the best way for me to transfer my library to my new laptop? Will iMatch help me do this?

    Is/was failing or has failed?
If the old computer still runs one of these methods may be best.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
I don't have personal experience with iTunes Match, but in principle you should be able to download all the tracks currently registered to your iTunes Match account. This isn't quite the same as restoring your previous library exactly as it was. There is always the potential for iTunes match to provide the wrong version of a song and could be content such as movies, podcasts, audiobooks etc. that would have been excluded.
