Please Help: Won't Start, Just Spins

I am writing about my other laptop, a 15 inch MacBookPro 2.16 Intel Core Duo running Mac OS X 10.4.10.
I just downloaded the latest software update form Apple: iTunes Update and Quicktime Update (? I'm sure about the iTunes. Second could have been Quicktime or Java update? But it was done through the Software Update)
I updated as instructed, then the computer was rebooted. But since then, it will only spin. The Apple logo comes on with the grey background and the spinning wheel.
I've let it go for over an hour.
I've tried to restart several times.
I've removed the battery and power and tried to restart again.
I've tried "minimal boot" by pressing down the spacebar while restarting.
Nothing seems to work. It just does the same thing again. Goes to the Apple logo against the grey background with the spinning wheel.
I'd appreciate any help! Thank you.

Based on your description, it appears that your system directory may be corrupted. Perhaps try rebooting from your backup system disc that came with your Mac, and run the Disk Utility, “Repair Permissions”. (see User's Guide)
There are other possible solutions although they will require more evasive steps and/or resources you don’t likely have on hand. Some of us use Disk Warrior specifically for this kind of issue. Also, if you're near an AppleStore, then perhaps they can help. Worst case would be to reformat/reinstall the OS or similar.

    Is this what you downloaded: iTunes 10.7?
    When the update fails what if any error report do you get, specifically? Please do this before trying again:
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

    Apple sometimes gives one-time refunds. Is this a large enough purchase to use your possible one-time refund?

    HP Pavilion Entertainment won't start just shows blue screen. Sometimes says missing operating system after changing boot order. I have seen error message 303. This happened after I couldn't stop coolncheap popups so I saved everything to another computer and did a complete restore. When I was in the process of getting it back to working order I allowed updates recommended and optional and then everything started.

    You must repair the HD, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft...

    You'll need the CD though.
    Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD.

    ooooooooops so sorry about this, here it goes and start with the first code. 
     With all these operations I recommend you TAKE OUT MEMORY CARD and DO A BACK UP OF YOUR STUFF!!!
    1. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data)
    Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for ALL operations listed here is 12345
    2. *#7370# - Reformat your phone (out of the box, tho keep in mind that most newer nokia phones at least n series, e series and s60 based phones have udp - user data preservation so not ALL data may be lost. still it is a good idea to always do a back up of your stuff.)
    3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working.If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
    hard reset - hold the following buttons *, 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. ) For Nokia N97 (unofficial version but works) is SHIFT /SPACE BAR / BACKSPACE while holding the power button. Again do not let go until you see the handshake screen.
    If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.

    That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
    Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
    When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
    If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
    If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

    Sounds to me like you are trying to tap on the word VIDEO.
    To change to video you don't tap on the word VIDEO. Instead, you drag the centre of the screen down. That will change the option from PHOTO to VIDEO.
    Of course, to go back to PHOTO or to SQUARE you drag the centre of the screen up.

    Hi, I have a white Mac Book 13" bought December 2008 (sorry, don't know much more of the spec). It has always worked fine but yesterday when I started it (fully charged), the start up chime came on and then nothing on screen and the laptop immediately starts bleeping 3 beeps in a row, pause, then 3 bleeps etc etc. I have tried Apple, control power button (as recommended on forum) and the PRAM reset (also as recommended). I have checked battery, nothing else is plugged in. Yesterday after trying all of this I tried putting in the start up disc to see if I could reinstall but nothing changed it and the disc is now stuck in there. Somebody please help, what's wrong with it? Thanks!

    Three beeps may suggest a problem with the RAM. You can remove one RAM stick and then the other and toggle which slot they go into. If your Mac still won't start in the different RAM configurations, you may need to see a specialist for additional diagnosis.

  • Please help!! iDVD just won't BURN!!!

    This is crazy. I have a nice DVD with 3 motian menus. I put in a disc and click burn. It encodes the menus, slide shows, moives - no problem. I actully thought it would work. It said it did so I put it in my DVD player and it says "No disc" I put it back in my G5 and all it is is blank DVD.
    I had a problem like this with a DVD a few weeks ago but I ended up burning 25 copies. I tried the same things I did with the last one, clear up alot of space, best quality. It doesn't work!
    Someone please help, I'm like under a deadline type thing. I need to give this DVD to a friend who will be leaving soon.....

    when you insert a writable DVD (or CD for that matter), your burner will perform a calibration to adapt to the media. The "Power Calibration Error" may indicate one of the following problems:
    1. You have a compatibility issue between the burner and the DVD media. In that case, try another brand. The DVD media of choice on this board is Verbatim DVD-R 1-4x. IMHO Ritek is another good choice. You might want to check compatibility on the xlr8yourmac database:

    2. Your burner's lens has become dirty. In that case, try cleaning with a specific cleaning disc
    3. Your burner might have some defect. In that case (and I hope it's not the case), you'll have to either get it repaired, or you'll have to replace it.

  • IMac Help - won't start up in OSX, starts to text...

    I was wiping my hard drive so that I could give away my old 20" white iMac G5. It worked fine the first time using the OSX Installation disk, but someone told me I should do it several times to be sure to remove all the data in the binary. So I did it a second time and that worked fine too. I decided to do it a third time so that I could put the new person's info onto the computer and I got a disk error during the re-install. It asked me if I wanted to "try again" so I clicked yes, but something bad must have happened...
    Now the computer won't start up in OSX and it won't boot from the disk (even if I hold down the C key). When it starts up, first I get a gray screen with the apple, then I have a quick flask of a tiny file folder with a question mark, then a quick flask of the same file folder but this time with the Mac face graphic, then the screen goes black and there is a bunch of white text. I can post the text if it will help - at the very end it says something like: localhost:/ root#
    I tried calling apple and they just told me to turn off the mouse and keyboard and try again - didn't work. I have tried to boot in safe mode, I have tried to reboot from the start up disk (it just ejects the disk), I have tried to reset the PRAM, nothing is working. I do not have any peripherals other than the mouse and the keyboard (I had to go out and buy a new wired keyboard today just to push the C button to try to start up from disk since the wireless keyboard wasn't being recognized).
    I have searched all the support docs and nothing seems to work or be just right. I am not an idiot, so if I need to type in a bunch of code that would be fine, just tell me what to do! Otherwise, I am hauling this beast into the so-called Genius Bar.
    Please help!

    So hooked the iMac up to my MacBookPro as a firewire target disk and ran a disk utility on it overnight. It didn't fix the problem completely, but it didn't get worse. Now, instead of the black screen with white programming text, I get a gray screen with a flashing question mark (a file folder that flashes between the mac face and a question mark) this time it just keeps flashing (unlike before where it only appeared once).
    I have tried resetting the PRAM, the NVRAM, and I have tried resetting the SMU (thanks for the advice, Barry, I was hopeful about that one!) but nothing is working. It won't let me start from a disk, even though I have checked the disk in another computer and it works fine. I am thinking that the computer has lost the ability to recognize the disk drive.
    Is there any way to re-install the operating system remotely (via my MacBookPro or anything else)?

    I am newbee in Oracle after 11 years in IT.(in microsoft products with MCSE, etc ).
    i want to just focuse on pl\sql programming but i don't know where to start.
    1.does pl\sql is capable of writting apps in web or n-tier?
    2. pl\sql is environment (like visual basic) or it's a tool that is attached to database?
    3.for me to start up do you know any good book with exercises or just random pick?
    4.if pl\sql is a database tool that means i have to install oracle db and create a table in order to exercises pl\sql is that righ? if so what you recommend?
    is there like ready-to-use db just for learning and exercising purposes?
    Please help me to get started i am totally confused.

    I know it's way too early that i would think about web and n-tier apps development using pl\sql. I just want to measure up capability of pl\sql in long run and job demanding.
    1. As you mentioned I can use the Oracle html package functions or the PSP compiler to write web-pages in PL/SQL.( i guess it's advance issue down the road).
    where can i download those you mentioned above as i am new to the site too. if you don't mind include URL.
    2. Where can I or can i download third-party products like TOAD and PL/SQL Developer? if you don't mind include URL. (which one you recommend that's used by other companies).
    3. As you mentioned I at least need access to a database either on my pc or via a network connection.
