Please improve pen tool path closing behaviour

I am annoyed by losing the first point’s backwards bezier handle when closing a path with the Pen Tool.
This seems disrespectful to users who may have years of experience with vector graphics programs and therefore quite possibly set the first point’s bezier handles just as they want them to be.
Also the subject of this thread:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3619783#3619783
The same seems to apply when picking up an open path – just because one has interrupted creation of a path does not mean the end points’ bezier handle should be disregarded on resuming adding points to that path.
Luckily the Photoshop team has not picked those … behaviours for their Path creation tools.

Another Illustrator upgrade, another disappointment …

  • How do i select everything under my pen tool path.

I have made a path with my pen tool around an image that i desperately want. But if i delete the pentool path everything underneith stays alive. They are both in the same layer so i do not know how to do it. Any help?
    Yours sincerely,
    Joep

    Joep,
My guess is that you will obtain the desired appearance if you select both the Pen Tool path and the image and Object>Clipping Mask>Make (Ctrl/Cmd+7).
That will show what is beneath the path and hide what is outside it.

  • Pen tool/path and content aware spot healing brush to remove cables (CS5)

Tried to remove some cables from an image using Russel Brown's video making use of the pen tool/path and the spot healing brush with content aware.  I'm pretty sure I followed his tutorial exactly but it did not work satisfactorily.  Are there any other tweaks I should be using to remove these cables and replace them with the background details?

    Yes to all.
Silkrooster  - Looks great!  However, I believe spot healing brush was the first I tried and got smudgy results, especially in area of the locks where there is a lot of detail behind the cables.  Found the patch tool works best, but not where there is a lot of detail behind the cables.
Fosse - Well, the bow of the ship going through the Panama Canal at 6 AM in the morning is a popular place, very crowded, and not one of them a photographer.  I was lucky enough to get the last spot which was dead center, but in front of the cables.  I tried to prevail on some people next to me to trade spots, but none were willing ($##$!!!&& b---ds) and they didn't even have cameras.  However, will keep your suggestion in mind about taking two shots for the next time...and will have to get up earlier.
I think if I want to really make this work, I will have to do a lot of work, probably using a combination of all these methods.
    Thanks to you all.
By the way, Re my question on screens without a reply button...when I click on a response, it appears without any reply button.  How do I get a screen showing the reply button without entering a new question, cancelling out of it, and then clicking on a response, which is the only way I found to get a screen showing the reply button.

  • Photoshop 6.0 & 7.0  vs. CS  (Pen Tool & Paths)

I am interested in the tutorials that have you draw with the pen tool and then create a path, which allows you to enhance the lines drawn with the pen tool. Hopefully that is stated somewhat correctly.
Anyhow, I currently have Photoshop 6.0, are these features (pen tool & paths) available to me? Will they be available in Photoshop 7.0? If so, how do I get to them. If not, do I need to upgrade to a CS version?
My goal, is to convert my drawing from paper, place it on the computer, and add coloring, etc. to it.
Currently, I am drawing the picture on paper, taking a photo of it with my digital camera, opening it with Photoshop 6.0, converting it to black & white, filtering with photocopy (using black & white), and then setting it to multiply. The I color and add effects in the layers below.
Help!!! I am truly a novice and would like to get much better at this type work. Finding a book, or tutorial that matching my situation has been difficult.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Robert...
    Are you talking about Photoshop
    Elements
? Some of what you've written sounds like you are.
Yes, the Pen Tool is available in Photoshop 6 and newer (but not in Elements 6); Custom Shapes are available in PS
    Elements
6 and Photoshop 6 and newer versions of both. From what I can discover through the online documentation Elements 6 & 7 will allow you to edit anchor points of a Custom Shape (I don't know to what extent, though), but it doesn't have the tools and function to allow you to create your own vector-based objects.

  • Pen Tool Path HELP!

My Pen Tool path does not show while I'm using the pen tool. It wouldn't be that big of a deal but I can't see which points are where or where my ends are to connect them. I must have accidentally shut them off with a command or something but cannot find a command that would actually do that. Does anyone know what happened?

Thank you so much! You're a lifesaver!

  • Pen Tool & Paths-

    Hello Photoshopers,
There is this really nice Harley-Davidson (actually, what Harley-Davidson isn't nice?!)…
I've been using the pen tool for almost a month now… I'm actually getting pretty good with it now, mainly using it to make my selections more precise… I haven't even bothered to try to draw with it, yet…
Anyway, I was already kind of sleepy when I started to outline the chopper with the pen tool… I got pretty tired & saved what I have done into a PSD…
I'm regretting it now, but… At the time, I didn't care if I would be able to pick right up where I left off…
In Illustrator I know it would probably save my anchor points…
When I click on my Path palette, I can see some of my outline… But, the rest of it is filled in with white as a shape…
With all of that said, in Photoshop… Is there anyway I can pick up where I left off tracing the nice Harley-Davidson?
    Or…
Do I have to start all over?
    FYI
I already tried to use the Direct Path tool & Direct Selection Tool… My anchor points remain hidden.

Okay, I did "Control Click" on the active icon in the Paths Palette… Just so you could see what I see in the Path Palette…
Like I said, I started to make the outline… Got tired and quit & saved it as a PSD hoping I could return later to finish with the outline…
When I opened the PSD, all of my anchor points disappeared… You can see the marching ants around the left side of the back tire going up around the top of the back tire on the way across the top of the chopper… I started feeling really tired and sleepy as the space between the handlebars… You can see the marching ants cut across the bike towards the bottom of the back tire…

  • Pen tool path colour

I've been requesting this since version 7, and usually chimed in whenever someone mentioned this. It gets requested often, for years, as far as I can remember, but has never been implemented. See below for a mockup I made up once. Add some preset colours and a custom colour swatch, show an indicator outline for the one you're using, and if possible add a "width" setting to expand the width of the path and use as a buffer to help ensure that you are actually cutting far enough into the object and not leaving any halos from the surrounding background.

Can you change the Path colour when drawing with the pen tool to something other than the default black
I'd interested in what version of Photoshop, and what operating system you are using?  This used to be asked quite a lot, but the problem seemed to go away without my noticing.  There were some issue a while back with CS5 and Macs, during which Jeff Tranberry suggested the oft banded advice to turn off Anto Aliasing in Preferences > Performance, but appart from producing a not so nice line, turning off AA doesn't seem to make any difference nowadays.

We know the line colour toggles between black and white depending on the colour behind it, so you'd expect the worst case to be around that close to 50% grey area.  You'll need to click on to expand this test image to make it a fair demonstration, but it doesn't look so very bad to me.  (Photoshop CC on Windows 7)

  • Pen Tool Path Prediction Missing (Show Edges doesn't fix it)

    Hi all,
I just encountered a problem with Illustrator's pen tool that I don't know how to fix. As I am drawing a path, the path prediction is missing. Normally the path connects from your last point to your cursor and you can calculate where you want to place your next point.
Show edges does not solve the problem. Show edges is currently activated and the path prediction isn't visible.
Does anyone know how to fix this? A Google search didn't do me any good.
    Thanks,
    J

Monika Gause, Thanks for the suggestion. I am however on CC and do not see an option for rubberband. Any other ideas? This problem slows my work flow down drastically and is incredibly frustrating.

  • Pen tool, paths behavior fix

    1. if the line has no stroke applied to it, everytime you make a new line the previous segments disapears while you're holding down the mouse to create the next segment. What is the purpose of this feature?? I use 100%  illustrator all 8 hours of my work day, and this gets on my nerves every time i use it. I like to draw with a 1px line for accuracy especially when creating clipping mask.
Some people suggest I work in outline mode, how about...no. Why should I go between viewing modes which is even more distracting.
    2. holding down alt while with the pen tool should always switch to the direct selection tool. and not the regular selection tool. I realize this depends on what tool was used last. there has never been a circumstance where I wanted to alternate between solid selection tool and pen tool.
    3. bleed and trim preview, similar to indesign.

    Peter,Peter,Peter....
    iNobody reads post #1.
That's not true. I read your post, and responded. But....thanks for your last post, because that's what it took for the light bulb to go on.
You see I never use "edit transform", I always just use the keyboard shortcut, cmd T, so when I read in your 1st post to use "edit transform" and select the path and use "edit transform" again, I didn't know you meant, (or) that there was a command "edit transform again".
Now I see what you where saying :-)
That works perfectly, but unfortunately only on one path, so my post #4 still stands. We need a way to transform and reposition all / or selected paths and link them to the object.
So again, Peter, thank you for your 1st. post!
    Ann,
i Can you group the airbrushing paths by copying a bunch of them onto the same Path tile?
I've never done that so I'm not sure how to do it. Can you elaborate?
i And can you then turn the groups of airbrushing paths into an Alpha Channel or several Alpha Channels?
Do the alpha channels resize / position / transform when you do an "edit-transform"?
I could select a path, convert it into a selection, then save the selection as a alpha channel.
Because you can only select one path tile at a time, it it possible to add multiply paths / selections into one alpha channel?

  • Selecting a pen tool path

I created a path around an object using the pen tool, how can i move that object onto a different background? Sorry kind of new at this :/

Ok, now your mentioning picture. To me that is like one from your camera. Thats called a pixel image or sometimes called a bitmap. Illustrator creates vector images. Vectors are points which are connected with an edge or segment. The distance between the two points are calculated mathmatically.
A pixel image is made up of well pixels. Each pixel can have its own value that determines its color.
When editing a pixel image is best to use an image editor such as photoshop as it has the tools needed to handle pixels.
The tools in Illustrator are meant to handle vector shapes and paths. However over the years both illustrator and photoshop have gained tools that kind of blur the distinction of what they do. In that sense, it is possible to crop, and drop shadows, even mask out an unwanted section of the photo. But its ability to mask an area, copy it and paste it into a new document is well very limited and is usually reserved for those that have no other way to accomplish this task. So, I am not going to say that it can not be done, but that there are easier ways to do it. Which included using the correct software.

  • Is there a way to adjust the width of the pen tools path?

In CS4 and 5, it's super skinny. I appreciate the finesse but I'll be damned if I cant see it sometimes.
Is there a way to adjust a path's (so to speak) stroke while just drawing a path only with no fill or stroke?
I know you can change color dependent on the layer....

  • Marquee and pen tools do not leave a visible track until selection is finished

When usinf the pen tool or the rectangular marquee tool and draging the path in invisible and does not appear until the "make work path" instruction is selected. Yhe use of the pen tool as an invible line pretty much renders the pen tool as usless. I have obviously turned something off. How do I fix this problem. Very frustrating. I have reinstalled prhoshop CS4 (3) times, same situation.

Found the answer in another thread. If pen tool path is not visible, then un checking "open gl" in edit>preferences>performance [GPU Settings] solves the problem.
Thank you to anyone who endevours to answer this question.

  • Lost bezier handle on closing path with pen tool

Can any of you please instruct me how to avoid losing the first point’s backwards bezier handle when closing a path with the Pen Tool?
This is a longtime annoyance for me, but I cannot rule out that I simply have failed to find the proper way of turning off this behaviour.

    I just did!
See my last post with the picture. I rotated not just the anchor point but the straight line that it was coupled to.
    Steve.
Steve, you can rotate anchorPoints and adjacent straight segments all day long, and you will still not be replicating the behavior and intent of FreeHand's Connector Points.
We're not talking about rotating straight segments here. (I would hope that everyone knows you can do that.)
Forget rotating things. Draw a path with a curved segment and an adjacent diagonal straight segment. The straight segment has no extended handles; only the curved segment does. Now adjust the length of the handle of the anchorPoint that joins to the straight segment in such a way that you cannot break tangency of the curve with the straight segment. In other words, the handle is always constrained to the angle of the adjacent straight segment.
Don't bother coming back with the workaround of scaling the handle. That still does not ensure tangency.
Example: This is Fontographer (FreeHand's progenitor). The highlighted point at the bottom of the motorycycle's skid plate is a Corner Point. The segment to the left of it needs to be curved, while maintaining perfect tangency with the straight segment to the right of it. In the inset, the Corner Point has been converted to a Tangent Point, and its handle is being dragged out (all with one selection tool, I might add.) The handle cannot be dragged out at any angle other than that which is tangent to the right segment.
That's just an example of converting a pre-existing Corner Point to a Connector Point. But now consider ensuring tangency fluidly as you draw with the Pen. In Illustrator, click to place a CornerPoint. Click or clickDrag to place a second anchorPoint oriented at any angle from the first point such that you are guaranteed that the first segment is straight, and that the next segment will be curved and tangent to the first segment. Can you do that in Illustrator?
While we're at it, note that in FOG, as in FH, you always know what kind of point you are dealing with. Corner Points are displayed as squares, Curve Points as circles, and Connector Points (Tangent Points in FOG) as triangles (regardless of whether their handles are extended or retracted).
