If you have anything on an iPod, there is non-Apple software that can copy them back to your computer.
Apple might let you re-download iTunes songs, but it is not their standard policy.

  • Possible solution for Empty Trash crashing

iPhoto continues to crash on me when emptying trash. I would think Apple could have fixed this by now, but I found something that works MOST of the time. After sending pics to trash, I open trash, move the scaling slider to smallest possible image, and then empty trash. Doesn't always work on the first try, but results are better than constantly restarting and emptying trash from normal views.

Replying to my own post? OK, I fixed my connectivity problem and did not need to uninstall iTunes. Originally I'd installed via System Update and had the aforementioned problem. So...I then downloaded iTunes directly from Apple and ran the installer...over top of my existing 8.2.1. When I did this I noticed that "custom" install includes two components. There's iTunes and there is mobile device somethingorother. By default they were both checked but I don't remember if that was the case with the install via System Update. It may have been but I hadn't chosen "custom." So...voila...now my iTouch connects and I didn't even have to restart the computer, let alone uninstall iTunes. Your mileage may vary but I'd suggest this reinstall as an easy first step if your Mac won't recognize your iTouch after installing iTunes from System Update.

  • Undo Emptying trash

I don't suppose there is anyway to undo emptying the trash if you've done nothing else since then is there?

    Hi, Todd and macjack —
Todd, fwiw, I agree firmly with macjack.
But I'll add a few comments, just in case...
If you moved files to the trash and emptied it (not using the Finder »» Secure Empty Trash option) then as macjack suggested, Data Rescue Mac or FileSalvage may help. As you've noted, you shouldn't use your Power Mac until you've tried this. Both have demo versions you can try to determine whether they would be successful.
For future reference, some users have reported liking TrashMagic (developer's page). It's a utility that essentially "protects you from yourself" in this regard...
    Regards to you both!

  • Is it possible to recover emptied trash?

I recently tried to download family videos from a jvc everio to my macbook using drop dv.  the program worked however it placed a marketing stamp on all videos so i decided to delete the program thinking all the videos were still captured on the video camera.  I dragged all files related to drop dv to the trash bin and emptied the trash.  As I went back to try and view the files from the video camera, everything was gone.  I am heartbroken at this point as this camera contained approximately 5 years of video of my family.  If there is any hope in recovery I would greatly appreciate any and all advice anyone has.  Thank you.

There are a number of programs that can recover deleted files, provided you didn't use "Secure Empty Trash".
You're very first step is stop using the computer and camcorder NOW, to avoid overwriting any of the files you want to recover.
A quick web search finds this software:
    http://www.wondershare.com/data-recovery-mac/photo-recovery-mac.html
    http://www.wondershare.com/data-recovery/photo-recovery.html
Ideally, you would first try downloading this onto a different computer and try to recover files from the camcorder, before then trying it on your Mac.
A quick word of warning: I've never used this software, and I assume it's legit and not a trojan, but you should satisfy yourself of its authenticity before use.
    Good luck

  • HELP, I lost my photos. How to undo empty trash?

    Hello,
I did a stupid thing and my iphoto library ended up in the trash, which I emptied.
I did not SECURE empty. Any way to recover from this?
    Help please,
    Thank you,

First, stop using the computer. Everything you do now overwrites the space where your photos used to be.
    Second, invest in Data Rescue:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
It is not cheap, and it probably won't get everything back, but if you value your photos, that's really the only shot you have.
(There is a new thing called "Disk Drill" ( http://www.cleverfiles.com/ )that seems to be free in beta test mode, but I have no experience with it and cannot say whether it will work or not. Data Rescue has saved my data in the past.)

  • I deleted the photos via Finder and empty trash long time ago. The thing is, that I want to recover one event or album.  The event appears in the iphoto but when open, it shows "!". Is it possible to recover the photos?

I deleted the photos via Finder and empty trash long time ago. The thing is, that I want to recover one event or album.  The event appears in the iphoto but when open, it shows "!". Is it possible to recover the photos?

No.  When you removed the photos via the finder you damage the library.  Photos should always be removed from the library using iPhoto, never with the Finder.
If you have a Time Machine backup of the library from before you deleted the photos you can restore the library to the Desktop and export that album from it to import into your current library.
It's been too long to be able to try one of the file recovery applications.  You sure to have overwritten those files with new files since them.

  • Is it possible to create a secure empty trash shortcut in file menu?

I have second finger click enabled so that I can quickly move files to the trash bin from the contextual menu. This is fine and dandy, however, for files containing sensitive informaton, I'd like to have a "Secure File Delete" option available (file bypasses the trash bin and is wiped after selecting said option).
I've searched the threads and checked system prefs. Only options are to change "empty trash" to "secure empty trash". This wouldn't work as I have more files that are typically trashed and not wiped. It'd be nice to have it available as a convenience I suppose
I know theres an app in the app store that offers this functionality. It's $3-4.
So my question...is it possible to create such a contextual menu option on my own?
heres an example of what I'm ltalking about...

Create a new Service in Automator.
Set it to receive files an folders in the Finder.
Drag in an Ask for Confirmation action if you want it.
Drag in a Run Shell Script action from the Utilities section of the Library.
Set it to Pass Input as Arguments and Replace the code with:
    srm -r "$@"
--That's ess-ar-em for Secure ReMove (just copy and paste)
Save it and it will show up in the Services menu when you right-click on an item in the Finder.
There are options you can add to it like -s for simple, -m for medium. The default (without options) is 35-pass Gutman.
You can see what options are available by opening Terminal and typeing
    man srm
Hit space to scroll down. Q to quit the man page.
The Verbose and Interactive options won't work since you can respond.
Note that depending on the algorithm chosen, it may take some time for the file/folder to disappear from the Finder view.

  • Is it possible to change zero options in "Secure empty trash"?

In the "Secure Empty Trash" feature in Tiger, is it possible to change the settings regarding how many times the file being deleted is zeroed out? Can I choose a 1-pass or a 7-pass, etc?

I don't think the "Finder" itself offers a way to change the number of overwrites performed during a "secure empty trash". Note that "secure empty trash" just calls '/usr/bin/srm', using the '-m' option -- 7 passes, including zeroes, FF, F6 and random according to the 'man' page.
Depending on what you are after, and being mindful of the different possible paths for items in the "Trash" in OS X, you might be able to use 'srm' directly, using the options of your choice. Though not recommended, if you get into hacking system files, the options probably can also be changed to some extent from there.

  • "Secure Empty Trash" of my emails possible?

Is there a way of trashing my emails within Mail Version 2.1.3 via my laptop's OS 10.4.11 -"Secure Empty Trash"- feature?

Thank you for the link to mireth.com. Within mireth I found this page which is exactly what I want to do and may do the trick:

+When you delete an email or move it to the trash, it's not really gone and can be recovered. You can use NetShred X to ERASE email so it can't be recovered.+
+* NetShred X can erase email that's in the mail trash bin. If the mail trash bin has been emptied, NetShred X can't erase the email. To erase these emails you've previously deleted, see notes+

  • Can't Empty Trash - Please help

I tried emptying the trash after throwing a ton of stuff out, and there were a bunch of locked files in there (mostly application support files).
I unlocked every single one and tried emptying the trash again and it says they're still locked. I did a find file for the specific names of the files that it says are locked, and all versions of that particular file show up as unlocked.
What am I doing wrong? Thank you for your time.

Many times, depressing the Option key while emptying Trash will empty problem files. Another method – start by depressing the mouse over the Trash icon. Then empty trash from the pop-up menu. The files should be emptied.
    Look at these links.

  • System sound (like when empty trash) miserably stop working in Lion 10.7.2

I have upgraded to Lion10.7.2 on my Macbook Pro early 2008 Intel 15 inches, and the update went fine except one annoying problem I found so far.
This problem also occurred in 10.7.0 and 10.7.1 and it seems that no fix has been made in 10.7.2
The problem is when I drag file to Trash and empty it, there should be trash empty sound effect, and this has been with us since Tiger.
In 10.7.2 it work as expected, but when I close the lid to get it to sleep, once I open the lid, the system sound is gone without no reason.
When I play music from iTunes, or when I change volume level, the sound effects work as usual, but empty trash sound stop working miserable.
I have to shut down, press Option-Command-P-R and power on to reset PRAM then system sound like empty trash come back. Again, afpr may be half a day, it's gone again
Any friend here has solution for this? The com.apple.soundprefs.plist file, if you delete it, in Lion, it is not recreated again, and it's gone forever. SO delete plist file is not a solution.
    Help please

I found a workaround to my problem accidentally.
As the system sound like empty trash or file drag sound stop working miserably, after close the MBP lid to sleep, after it awake, system sound just stop working.
Before this, I have to shut down my MBP, reset PRAM by press Option-Control-P-R and power on, to get the system sound back
But I found that the workaround whenever the system sound stop working thad do not require reboot is:
    1. Go to System Preference-Sound
    2. Change Play sound effects through: Internal Speakers to Soundflower 2ch) in the drop down list.
(Soundflower has been installed by a software called iShowU HD (screen capturing software))
    3. Slide to change Alert Volume from the original position
    4. Switch back to Internal Speakers from Soundflower 92ch) in the drop down list
    5. Change Alert Volume by moving slide bar back to the desirable position
Immediately, the sound effects that stop working will start working again.
This just work for my case. I don't know it will work for ther people that have the same problem as me or not.
And if possible, can some expert here give me explanation why doing the above make system sound effect to work again? mI want to know the cause, and definite solution to the problem
Advise and suggestion please. Thank in advance

  • How do i restore my secure emptied trash

    heey
I was securely emptying my trash folder and i went to look into my iPhoto folder but nothing was there anymore, all my pictures and videos had been deleted. They must have got swipped when i was emptying it but is there any possible way of restoring these files as they were my only copies. Please help
    Thankyou

First off, did you actually drag the iPhoto Library to the Trash perhaps with a bunch of other items?
Did you delete pictures/video out of iPhoto itself?
Look inside your Pictures folder and see if the iPhoto Library is there, if it is, then your pictures/video are likely safe, it's perhaps iPhoto needs to be reset.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638
You can also right click on the iPhoto Library and "show package contents" and inside is a folder called Originals containing your original files.
When you Secure Empty Trash, especially with a large amount of pictures and/or video, it will take some time as it's scrubbing the files off the hard drive. Depending how far this process occured depends how many files were pernamently removed from the hard drive.
Because OS X was told "these files don't exist anymore" doesn't mean they are not still on the hard drive, as only their space is made available for new files.
Since you canceled the secure erase, many files could still exist on the drive, just that the remaining ones not scrubbed are soon to be overwritten with new files.
So it's important not to use the computer's boot drive until you can perform data recovery steps.
You can need to install OS X on a external hard drive, then boot from it, install Data Rescue $100 and then have it read the 1's and 0's of the deleted data that remains.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
You also can take the computer to a local PC/Mac repair shop and ask them to perform Data Rescue, however it's going to cost a pretty penny as they have to sell a hard drive to you and thier time and effort. $200-$300 or so.
If your pictures and video are not worth spending up to $400 for recovery, then your done.
Always have a backup plan in place to "undelete" or boot the computer if it's not operating.

  • Need help, trying to empty trash.

The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items.
This is the message that wont go away, even though I have admin rights and password am the only user of the computer, running 10.6.8 any suggestions out there as how to solve this not a tech head so stupid simple replies please.

    Hi Linc,
think I sorted the problem went to system preferences then advanced uncheck the give warning for empty trash, then when I hit the drop down I had the option to empty trash instead of the secure empty which is the only option I had previous, and yes all the files where in the trash folder I backed them up to a external drive and wanted to make space by dumping them off the laptop. You might know is is possible to just delete folders without having to drop them into the trash? ,thanks Damian.

  • How can I restore files from empty trash?

Please someone help me! I deleted my IPHOTO LIBRARY by mistake, and then I pressed " empty trash". Is it even possible for me to recover deleted itens from the trash? I live in Brazil and the closest Apple Store is 5 hours from home. I am not that comfortable with any support companies trying to fix my computer and I can't set up Time Machine alone.
    Any tips?

I have heard of it, I know nothig about it, Data Rescue is the one I see recommended the most. I had to use Data Rescue once many years ago on a family members machine and recovered quite a bit, but it was a purchased version.
Try the Wondershare and see if it finds anything (what have you got to lose? as of now you have already lost data) I would try the trial version and see if it recovers anything before thinking about buying the full package. If it does not recover anything then I would not buy it. Maybe then you might try the Data Rescue 3 trial and seee if that recovers anything.
As for Time Machine back up, you REALLY want to have that on an external drive. You can partition your internal drive for a Time Machine back up, but what happens if the internal drive crashes,? Then you have nothing. With an external Time Machine drive you can replace the broken drive and then restore the data.
I have 2 back ups 1 Time Machine, and 1 Carbon Copy Clone (the CCC can be booted from, so if my internal drive goes down, I can still start up from the clone. Drives are fairly inexpensive these days, data can be pricless.
It is not a question of if my drive will crash, it is a question of when, all drives will fail at some point.
By the way, your english is quite good.
I hope this helps and you get your photos back, I would be very sad if I lost all of mine.
    Best of luck
