Please, please help!  Photos in library disappearing before my eyes.

When I open up the iphoto library, my picture thumbnails disappear one after the next--from seemingly random places, though mostly on the right hand side)--before my eyes. My worry is that I am going to loose all my photos.
History: I have never had any problem with my iphoto program. I have never altered, moved, or renamed anything in the iPhoto library folder. I always work from within the program itself. A couple of days ago, I got a message saying I was running out of hard disk space and that I needed to eliminate some items in order to make more space. I clicked on the iPhoto trash and emptied about 2000 photos from it. After that when I scrolled in the library, the photos began to disappear and leave gray shapes with dotted outlines. No picture appears when they are clicked on.
I called the Apple Care support. The fellow I worked with suggested that I should try rebuilding iPhoto and sent me an article on how to do that. He also said that I will need to have as much free space on my hard disk as the size of the library is. The library is 16,000 MB. There are 6,000 MB still available to use. He said NOT to open up the iPhoto program until I had rebuilt the program and then he rang off.
I'm pretty innocent of how computers work and it wasn't until I realized that it's the photos and Quicktime movies from my camera themselves that are filling the disk space and that there isn't much else filling up the disk space (novels and poems and letters don't take up much space it turns out!) that I realized I am in a Catch-22 situation. How to eliminate things when I can't open the program for fear of losing all photos?
I have some but not all photos backed up on DVD. My husband has a selection on his computer but does not have the DVD burner capacity. He could burn the photos he has on a CD, but that would take forever. We do not own an external hard drive, but I am wondering whether I should see if I can find one--that's easier said than done since we live out on a headland in Ireland pretty far from everything. The closer Apple store in five hours away.
One other possibility I've come up with: we have an old PowerBookG4 which still has about 22,000 GB available on it. Could it be used in some way to hold the photos from my computer (The MacBook) as I try rebuilding the iPhoto program on my computer (the MacBook)? We have a firewire.
We are going to Paris next week, and I want to be able to take a ton of photos (my great joy!) without worrying that I'll have nowhere to put them. (Memory cards are expensive here.)
Any help would be very appreciated--thank you in advance. And I'd also be grateful if it were couched in the easiest to understand computer language possible (don't assume I know a whole lot.)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
1. Go to your Pictures Folder. In their is a folder called the iPhoto Library Folder. Inside it is a folder called Originals, and that contains Roll Folders. Your pics should be inside there.
That's: Pictures / iPhoto Library Folder / Originals / Rolls
So, first off, confirm that your photos are there.
2. Yes you do need to clear off disk space, and yes, your iPhoto files and any music you have a good candidates for moving to an external disk. You can purchase an external disk from the online apple Store (http//:www.apple.com/iestore is the Irish AppleStore) Look for the 'Storage' link on the left hand side. They'll ship it to you in three or four days (in my experience)
3. In the meantime, rebuilding your library will require disk space. It's not difficult, and doesn't take very long. If you have Firewire on the old Powerbook then here's what you do:
1. Turn Off the Old Powerbook. Connect it to the Macbook using a FireWire cable
2. Hold down the 'T' key and start the Powerbook. A Firewire symbol will appear on the screen, and the PB will turn up on your MacBook desktop, as an external disk.
3. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder (from your Pictures Folder) to the PB - just drag and drop it to the icon on the desktop.
4. Confirm that your Pictures have crossed over safely. Then double check. And then check again, because...
5. Put the iPhoto Library Folder in the Pictures Folder of the MacBook into the trash and empty it. (Note: Be sure that your pics are on the old Powerbook!!!) (We have to trash the iPhoto Library Folder from the MacBook to make space for the rebuild.)
6. Launch iPhoto on the Macbook. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on the PB and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
This should give you a working iPhoto Library on your Macbook.
But you still have a space problem, and you should deal with it as a priority. Once you have got an external disk, post back and we'll go through how to put your library on to it.
Greetings from sunny Clare.

.I wanted help cleaning up the computer as Apple charges so much to help and I have to drive an hour to get to an Apple repair depot leave my computer for a week and I can't be without it..
To make space on your computer move media files (videos, audio, photo libraries) to an external drive and make regular backups of this external drive to another drive (better to two other external drives).
Media require much space, and removing them from your system drive will help most.
The second space saver is uninstalling third party applications that you really don't need.
The files, that Cleaner applications are removing  (log files, backup copies, previews), will not save much space, but are important for the speedy performance of your mac.
ClamXav antivirus program? Is it a bad thing? I have not run it either, just wanted to have something just in case?
I have not heard that it has done actually any damage. But no antivirus software is perfect. Your best protection is to be cautious when downloading from the internet and and not to open attachments to unsolicited emails.

    Hi KRKabutoZero,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #58042 on A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac.
Do you have access to another Mac? You may want to backing up your files via Target Disk Mode (TDM) as well as running some utilities (Knowledge Base Document #58583 on How to use FireWire target disk mode.
You may want to invest in a utility like DiskWarrior from Alsoft. It is great for troubleshooting drive malfunctions.
As said before, you may also want to bring your iBook to your local Apple Store/Reseller.

  • Please help! Major library issues

I lost all of my music on my external harddrive so I've been left with the daunting task of reloading all of my music (Thousands of songs). I ran into an issue. Midway,I tried to make the process easier for me by loading the songs I had on my ipod to the computer. This was a terrible choice and 1. It duplicated everything I had on the library. 2. Some of the songs I had on the playlists started to disappear. The reason why I haven't just cleared out everything and just started over is because I would love to keep all the playlists especially (I have at least 70), and play counts artworks and all the little tweaks I've made along the way. I also need to see what I had purchased and loaded in the past so that i can then reload any missing songs. I did copy the itunes folder to a new harddrive before I tried to load the songs from my ipod to the computer. So I'm missing one book of cd's but see what I'm up against I have no problem loading those again. Can anyone please help me.? I'd be forever in your debt. Please help. I've just stopped using it altogether because I'm overwhelmed with what's ahead.

    The C:/Windows/Fonts folder?
When I set up this new build, I copied my fonts folder over from my old computer and installed all of them wholesale on my new PC. That was on Thursday. Everything has been up and running fine until yesterday. The only thing I can think that I did to screw it up was install Photoshop CS3. Sidenote: All other fonts work on my PC, except the Adobe ones (Caslon, Garamond, Myriad, etc). In fact, I had purchased some Condensed versions of Myriad Pro that installed and still work.
Update: Just tried my Illustrator again....here is where it gets weird. All fonts are now working in Illustrator (I deleted my pref file one more time). However, the fonts will not work in Photoshop. I was receiving a Text Engine failed to initialize warning yesterday in PS and found a site via google that recommended deleting the contents of the Type Support folder. Once I did that, Photoshop worked fine again other than not recognizing any Adobe fonts.
Also, I still can't see the Adobe fonts in my C:/Windows/Fonts folder, but they are working in Illustrator.
This is all very weird...and I thank you all for your help!

  • Please help! Shared Library Error... no applications will open!

    Hi. Major issues!!
My computer was unplugged for 2 weeks (renovations). When I set it up in my new office, none of my applications would open! (Microsoft, Adobe, AOL, etc...) Safari is working.
    I get this error message:
The application "Photoshop" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "5<application><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_SpeechRecognition>"
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error:

The application "AppleWorks" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "4<AppleWorks><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_SpeechRecognition>"
    Here's what I've tried...
I have tried to install combo update 10.3.9. .. didn't work.
My computer was purchased in 2004... just moved to a new house... do not know where my installation dvd is... so to reboot on that is not an option.
I tried disk repair permissions... didn't work!
I opened my log console to view the crash logs... and it appears a lot has crashed... but I can not understand what any of it means!?!
Can anyone help or offer some advice?
Can anyone understand a crash log if I post it?
Please help!?! Taking an online masters course and this is a major dilemma!
    Thanks,
    Lindsay

    Hi Lindsay,
"Can I get one from a mac store? Does it have to be the original one I used when I purchased my mac?"
No, you can no longer purchase 10.3 Panther disks from Apple Stores, online or otherwise. You may however, be able to purchase replacement disks for your computer (if Mac OS 10.3 were the original install disks that came with your mac) by calling Apple and explaining and having the serial number ready of the computer.
If your installation of 10.3 was an upgrade you can purchase retail copies of 10.3 disks online from many resellers, such as on ebay or sites such as FastMac, but be sure to purchase a retail box set and not upgrade or machine specific disks.
Did you perform all of the steps that Kappy steered you to in Dr. Smoke's FAQ first and your only option left is the Archive and Install?

  • PLEASE HELP!  itunes has disappeared from my computer - don't know why

PLEASE HELP!! iTunes has disappeared from my computer. Have no idea what happened. Won't let me download new itunes.

You can probably fix it by running chkdsk, as explained in this other thread. It makes sense, if you didn't remove itunes yourself and it can't be reinstalled/repaired, something went seriously wrong on the PC's hard drive. Perhaps the chkdsk utility can fix it.

  • Help!- aperture library disappeared after copy

I'm screwed...After a long holiday with my macbook and my aperture (3.0) library (90GB) on an external drive I finally get home and decide to copy the library onto my iMac (pictured folder). I always keep a copy in my external drive as a backup and for macbook use (internal drive too small).
Well, I connect the drive to my iMac, and try replacing the aperture library. Takes very long thinking, so I decide to delete the old aperture library on my iMac and just do a simple copy. Everything seems fine, it starts and says it has 50 minutes to go...so I leave for dinner. An hour later I come back and not only had the aperture library not been copied (only 700 mb or so of it), but the source isn't there either! i.e. it disappeared from my external drive!!
I though it might be a database problem, but mac os x says I have 90 GB more free space on my external drive, so the aperture library seems to have been deleted!
HELP HELP HELP....all of my photography is in there and I cannot believe I have lost everything just by trying to copy it!
    thanks for any suggestions!

Yes, I must agree. I have exactly the same problem. Come on Apple - do not invite us to 30 day free trial and give us this hassle for the weekend.
    Any help appreciated.
The 30 day free trial cannot convert an Aperture 2 library.
Using the trial you can can only import into a new Aperture 3 library, and should not have any of these conversion issues.
We converted 6 workstations this weekend, specifically did not convert the imaging as that can be done in the future on an as-needed basis.
All of the libraries reside on disks that are no more than 40% full, for performance reasons.
The first library we converted was 500GB and at about 2.5 hours it froze at about 58%. I trashed the partial conversion and started over with a clean copy. This time, in Aperture 2 I did a Library rebuild before I converted. After this the conversion ran perfectly, in about 4 hours.
I ended up with a new file called Aperture Library, and another file called Aperture Library_Original. I found that this is the way the conversion is designed if you have the diskspace for 2 full Libraries. If you do not, it will delete the original after the conversion.
At any rate before converting run a rebuild in Aperture 2, and then make a backup of that library. You will then have a very clean original should anything happen in the conversion.
I am happy to say we followed the rebuild and backup on the other 5 Libraries, ranging in size from 500GB to 1.2 TB, and all the other conversions went smoothly.
The key is have plenty of diskspace available, more than double the size of your library, and Aperture will leave an Aperture Library_Original which can still be opened in A2.

  • Thumbnails disappear before my eyes??

    Hi
I've just upgraged to CS5,  when I go in to a folder of images using Bridge I can see them all as previews then before my eyes random ones start to disappear and are replaced by the Mac Jpeg logo. What I can't understand is why it is only happening to some. The photos were taken at the same time and are of a similar size? If I purge the cache the same thing happens again, only some the jpegs remain as previews?
All help gratefully received - it's driving me crazy!
Just noticed something the ones that aren't appearing say 'Dot Gain 20%' in the info panel - the other ones say 'Adobe RGB'?
    Many thanks
    Jim

If I purge the cache the same thing happens again, only some the jpegs remain
    as previews?
That is a strange problem, could you specify a bit more. Are they right out
of camera or are the developed using ACR?
    Could you provide a screenshot?
And can you try to copy them to a new folder to rule out folder corruption.
And are all the files on your system or do you use a network?

  • Please Help! - iTunes Library keeps disappearing

I recently got a new computer and set about creating a new set of playlists, I have to create them manually as there are no itunes functions that work to create them. After spending several hours making playlists, I closed itunes and the next time I looked, all the playlists had gone! WHY?

Many Vaio owners have seen problems. There is some Sony media management software that causes a conflict with itunes saving its library database file.
Other Vaio owners have found you need to either stop it from watching the itunes folders, or stop the vaio program that does it.
There are many posts in the itunes for windows forum. I read that Sony had released an update to resolve this issue, so you may also want to check their website.

  • IPhoto 06 - some photos in Library disappear usually 2 at a time, Help?

I have read the discussions, but found no problem just like mine, and those close are not answered. I have 533 in the one Library in iPhoto 06. When looking through Library I noticed two spots were just white squares. They will not open in any program, but Get Info reveals name, number of pixels, when taken, etc. Later while scrolling down in Library I actually saw two thumbnails go white. Again nothing would make them appear, but Get Info gave data. I am not renaming, adjusting or any thing else to these photos. I have lost about 10 so far. Most have been in iPhoto for the year or so I have had the machine. The lost pictures seem to be completely random. All are .jpg. Any help would be appreciated.

That did the trick - thanks.  Before restoring I copied all the photos I'd added to iPhoto since the last good backup and then re-imported them once iPhoto was up and running again from the backed-up library.

  • Lightroom 3 Export to JPEG issue ( please help) (photo attached)

    Hello,
I have been going crazy trying to solve this issue and can't find a solution. I am using Lightroom 3.4.1 on a Mac running 10.6.7. In Lightroom I am editing raw images from a Canon 7D. I tweak and adjust the images to my liking but when I export them as a JPEG at full quality using color space sRGB my jpegs do not look like my adjusted photos in Lightroom. The biggest missing factor is all my "detail" adjustments. Sharpening ect. The colors are slightly less vibrant but the huge issue is the sharpening I do that disappears. Can anyone help me with this? I will supply an example below. On the left is the jpeg and on the right is the grab from Lightroom. I am viewing the jpegs in preview and don't have photoshop. Thanks in advance for any help!

When you export from Lightroom and you do not select the resize option, you will get the full resolution from your original image. This contains far more pixels than your screen can display as displays are very low resolution devices (typically only around 100 ppi). When you open the resultant jpeg in an image viewer, it will have to downscale from that. Usually many times. This necessarily introduces blur and the result will strongly depend on the chosen scaling algorithm. Lightroom uses a fairly good one to downscale and it shows you a preview of a properly output sharpened image at the size you are looking at. Preview uses a particularly bad one. In preview if you want the screen pixels to correspond to the image pixels, you need to hit apple-0 (or use the view menu and select "actual size"). In Safari and Firefox, you need to click on the image to zoom in to actual pixels.
Your comment also makes me realize that you do not really understand the sharpening in Lightroom. The detail tools in Develop are meant to optimize what is called capture sharpening. These should NOT be used to optimize sharpness at the fit view level, but only at the 1:1 view level. They operate basically on the image to correct for image blur that comes from the sensor's antialias filter and for a small amount of lens blur (say when you are diffraction limited owing to use of large f-numbers). Do not zoom out and play with the detail setting. Zoom into 1:1 on certain areas and optimize the sharpening. There are many tutorials on the web that explain this. Then when you go to output your image, you need to apply another sharpening, called output sharpening, at the final size, in order to correct for blur introduced by the output medium such as a printer or a display and by rescaling the image. The print panel has this built in. In the export panel, the options are in the lower tabs. You need to rescale the image to your final size (for example, a 533x800 pixel image is typical for a good web sized image). Then also apply the correct output sharpening in the tab below it. Typical would be to sharpen for screen at a standard amount. I showed some comparisons on this around the LR 2 timeframe here: http://lagemaat.blogspot.com/2008/08/on-output-sharpening.html The output sharpening has improved by quite a bit by now from those examples, but they show the general idea.
    Hope this helps.

  • Please help - Photos not saving

I would appreciate some help here-
the photos I take, screenshot, and try to save will not save to my camera roll. I can take, screenshot, and press the save button, but they won't save to the camera roll! I didn't update lately, (iPad is up to date), it just randomly occurred. I thought maybe since my storage was almost full, that might be the problem. So I deleted plenty of photos that I did not need, clearing up tons of space, but it hasn't helped. I tried the "Restrictions method" I've read about, but it didn't do anything. I'm unsure what to do. If you could help in any way, that'd be great!
    Thank you.

Hi If  you have just done a Factory Resore you need to Download Apps & photos from ICLOUD over your wifi Plug into charger before doing this. This may take upto 2 hours if you have a lot of photos. Cheers Brian
