Please read before you send your iPod to repairing

Unbelieveable, since last Saturday, I needed to fix up 3 iPods with similar problems from family members and friends, 2 connected with PC and 1 with Mac. I guess it will be a good idea if I can share with you all and hope that it can give you some hints when you try to fix yours before sending it for repairing.
Before you do anything I suggest that you should read the following carefully..
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/index.html
Most problems came from the iPod not being recongzied by the computer (mainly PC and I find it less often with Mac). Second issue is iPod not being charged for quite some time.
I must say that I am not an expert but I did learn something during the past experience on fixing for more than 10 iPods but none of them are shuffle.
The first thing you need to do is plug your iPod directly to the AC charger not the USB of your computer, and leave it for 2-3 hours and most of the time you will able to wake up your iPod.
Secondly, do a reset of your iPod when it hangs, it is simple just press "Select"+"Menu" keys, which will not erase your data of your iPod.
In case the above both do not manage to fix your iPod problem then you may force to do the following, but it will erase all your data therefore it is always to be wise to have a backup before your iPod got problem.
1. Reinstall the latest iPod updater after the reset
If 1 still not able to recongize your iPod by the computer then you have to put your iPod to DiskMode i.e. plug your iPod to the AC charges, do a RESET and press "Select"+"Play" keys, you will see the message "Disk Mode" in few sec. Then you need to connect your iPod with your computer, and hope that it will be recongized. If you are lucky to reach this stage then you simply need to restore your iPod updater, and your iPod should be back to normal. Please note that You may need to plug and unplug few times in order to let your iPod to be recongized.
If your iPod still not able to be recongized then you have to format your iPod while it is in a Disk Mode, you need to use the Disk Utility software (for Mac - I am not sure about PC) to erase the Partition of your iPod then do a formatting and disk verify straight after. Then you should able to reach the final stage i.e. restore the latest iPod updater and sysc your iPod with your iTune.
Additional hints which may help your during the fixing ..
1. Try to do few attempts, which could take you as long as 1 hour
2. Try to exchange cables to connect with your computer i.e. USB and Firewire
3. If you fail to solve your iPod with your PC then try to fix it with Mac and vice versa. Surprisingly, I do have experience that the iPod got recognized by my Mac after I connected it with a PC
Above are my experience and I am glad that more than 90% chance I am able to solve the iPods' problem with only one iPod Mini needed to be repaired.
Good luck and hope it works in your case

I am one as well.
I've been trying for days to get the infamously dreaded frowny faced 'pod off my screen, but, to no avail. I've tried charging it with computer and plug, reset and rereset for hours on end, taking it on and off disk mode for ages . . . you get the drift. My computer hardly reconizes it (it reports at start-up that I have a Unidentifyed Plugged in Object in my computer, and System Profiler admits it perfectly). Now, when I go to the last resort (sending the dear away, for the second time no less, is not one) of erasing the thing, it declares it's self impossible! Like I've said before, I've honestly tried every trick in the book (though if you have a new one I;d be more than will to give it a shot) and am seriously considering an exorcism.

  • *Unique situation* Please read if you know about iPod not showing up . . .

Okay. This may take awhile to explain, but here's the story. . .
So I recently bought a macbook. I wanted to transfer all of my old files from my G4 cube to my Macbook but didn't haev a firewire cable. So I decided to use my 20GB iPod. I plugged it in to my cube. To do a test run, I put one file on my ipod, ejected it safetly and plugged it in my macbook. I successfully took the file off. Success! So I decided it was time to put everythign on the iPod. I plugged it back in my Cube (this is seriously all taking place in a matter of minutes) and the ipod does not register. On the screen it says "do not disconnect" but it's not on my desktop or itunes. I remove it, try again, restart and everything. No dice. I then put it back on my macbook and it worked again. It continued to work on my macbook and not on my cube after several trials. So I decided to restore my iPod. I did just that. Problem unresolved. Next, I go to the disk utility program, and it's there! But it's in a lighter shade than the other files. I decided to go to options and try "mount," but nothing occurs. And that's where I am now. A restored iPod, and still no solution. Any advice is GLADLY appreciated. How could the tables turn like this in five minutes time?

Run through the installation procedure. When asked for the destination drive, click on the Menu option next to the blue Apple in the top left-hand side of the screen (I think it's labelled 'Installer') and there should be an option labelled 'Disk Utility'. From here, you should be able to see your disk drive and reformat it so that it can be used in the installation. Give it a bash and tell us how it goes.

  • Do You Know Your iPod Battery May Fall Under Warranty Replacement?

I have the extended warranty on my iPod Touch. My batter life was horrible... without wifi just playing music getting just over 3 hours. I also had a bad MBP battery. Called up AppleCare and got case numbers for both after diagnosis. Was taking a long drive to an Apple Store with Genus appt the next day...
My name was called and my Genus re-ran the MBP battery check finding it at fault and went to replace it... I said that I was having an issue with the Touch battery as well. He said "You know that the battery is NOT covered under warranty!". I said NO, if a battery is faulty that it is covered under warranty. I told him that it was THE reason that I purchased the warranty... He argued with me about it and I just couldnt believe my ears... I said that all he had to do was go to the Apple site and find the Touch battery warranty description... He started printing out the MBP battery replacement agreement and we had another video test to run on the MBP... he went in the back to get a DVD.
As I sat there I started hearing all the genus say to every customer with a iPod battery issue say that battery replacement cost blah blah blah... no one was asked if they had a warranty or that if the battery was found to be faulty the battery replacement would be covered. One guy came in with his son saying the iPod was a Christmas present and the battery was only getting blah blah hours... Again, he was told that a battery replacement would cost $$$. It was surely under warranty but he was still charged! ***?
My Genus comes back and runs the video test with a Howdy Doody DVD, UGH... anyways... he goes back to return the DVD and comes back with something in his hand, unwraps a Touch and tosses it my way. I asked him what was up? He says that the original Touch battery is not replaceable so here was a new one. I said OK... thinking, why was he giving me one after arguing with me about the battery NOT being under warranty???
So, I guess it pays off to know your warranty with Apple products as the Genus wont offer the facts. Maybe this was just at the Cleveland OH Apple Store. So, wondering if you know that your iPod battery may fall under warranty and if this is a national fraud by Genus?

Will the data on my iPod be preserved?
No. You will receive a replacement iPod that will not contain any of your data, songs, etc. Before you submit your iPod for service, it is your responsibility to keep a separate backup copy of the data stored on your iPod and reinstall that data. Please do not send any accessories with your iPod as they will not be returned.
Attention iPod touch customers: Before obtaining service, it is important to back up your data using iCloud or iTunes. Apple is not responsible for the loss of information while servicing your iPod touch and does not offer any data transfer service.
Following service your replacement iPod touch may have a newer operating system (iOS) version and you will need to restore your data using the method used to back it up (iCloud or iTunes). As a result, you may also need to update your App Store applications to ensure compatibility with the newer iOS. If you experience a problem with an application purchased from the App Store, check iTunes to see if an update is available or contact the application vendor directly.

  • What happens when you take your iPod into the apple store for battery replacement?

I am taking mine in tomorrow. How do they decide if your battery is bad enough to get the iPod/battery replaced? What do they do with your iPod? Do they mess with the apps and data?? Do they search your history to see what you've done on it? HELP!

By reading the following, Apple exchanges your iPod for a refurbished (includes new battery) iPod. Data is no preserved/restore to the replacement

Will the data on my iPod be preserved?
No. You will receive a replacement iPod that will not contain any of your data, songs, or after-market personalizations. Before you submit your iPod for service, it is your responsibility to keep a separate backup copy of the data stored on your iPod and reinstall that data.

However, I have heard in this forum that sometimes Apple will just replace the battery.
If you are concerned I would do one fine sync/backup and then go to Settings>General>Reset>Ease aall content and settings.

  • Is there an app that allows you to download and read pdf files on your ipod touch?

Is there an app that allows you to download and read pdf file on your ipod touch (5G)?

There are many apps that allow reading PDFs. GoodReader allows downloading some items. It all depends upon how the site handles the download. It also uses file sharing in iTunes.
iBooks also reads and had file sharing.

  • Can you report your iPod lost/stolen to Apple?

I believe someone has stolen my iPod Touch (5th gen.). I have it regestered with Apple...What can I do to find it/get it back? Is there a number I can call? Also, I've read that you can locate it somehow through iCloud. How is that done? All help is appreciated

No. Apple does not look for lost or stolen devices. Call your local police.
What To Do If Your iDevice Is Lost Or Stolen
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if Wi-Fi is enabled on the device. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

  • If you restart your ipod touch as a new ipod touch will that delete your wifi information completley from the ipod touch?

If you mean if you restore your iPod via iTunes on your computer to factory defaults/new iPod the answer is yes.

  • Reading a book on your iPod touch 4th generation.

How do you read a book on your iPod touch 4th generation??? Help please!!!!

iBooks, Kindle for iOS, Nook for iOS, several other options. If you'll be more explicit about what it is you're asking or trying to accomplish, we can probably provide more specific advice. Referring to this other post from you:
How do you read a book on your iPod touch 4th generation after you've synced it to your iPod already?
From where did you buy or obtain this book?
    Regards.

  • How do you use your iPod Touch?

I'm thinking of buying an ipod touch 5th gen, but I have to convince myself that it would help me significantly before I drop $300 on a device. My question: how do you use your iPod Touch, aka, what things have helped you significantly, excluding games? I've heard a ton about how awesome the new version is, and everything about its camera and retina display, but I want to know that I would actually use one first....
    Thanks.

Surf the web from bed and coffee shops/bookstores.  When in a store that has WiFi I may research a product that looks interesting to buy.
It is a camera that is always with you (assuming you always take it with you), so you can capture that picture that happens once in a life time.  Also the camera is great when shopping for "Big Ticket" items as you can take pictures to remind you of things you were looking at so you can do additional research at home before making your final decision.
Check my mail from bed and coffee shops/bookstores, etc... when WiFi is available.
Use it as an alarm clock, meeting reminder, todo reminder.
Take notes (not school notes, just ideas, stuff I maybe want to buy, useful information I may pick up in a bookstore, books I may want to buy, etc...)
Contains my contacts for friends, family, and businesses (plumber, dentist, doctor, etc...)
Plays music, or in my case, I listen to podcasts
Reading ebooks.  I use it a lot to read ebooks.  It is always with me, so I can read a book anywhere, such as waiting in a doctor/dentist office, at the motor vehicle registry.  And reading in bed is great as when you fall asleep, it remembers what page you were on vs that book that drops onto your face and wakes you back up while at the same time loosing your page
The Maps app is great for finding where something is located, and plotting how to get there (not as good as having an iPhone with GPS, but still useful).  Also the satellite images make it easier to visualize where you are going.
When connected to WiFi it can be used for Facetime when calling a friend or family member that also has an iOS device.  Seeing a loved one when they are not near can be emotionally satisfying.  You can also make skype calls.
I use 1Password to store all my passwords.  It keeps them secure, I always have them with me, and I do not need to use the same password over and over again, or make them too simple to remember.  1Password has a built-in browser so you it can substitute the correct password for the web site you are visting without actually needing to look it up.
1Password related but not passwords.  Because 1Password encrypts all the data it holds, I can also store sensitive information (such as medical conditions, or other information I do not want made public should my device be lost or stolen), yet always have that information with me should I need it.
I can get the weather.  This week, I've been using an app to get high/low Tide infromation, plus sunrise information.  But getting weather info when you wake up so you can plan your day and if you need to shovel the driveway before going to work.  I find it easier to get the weather from my iOS device than it is to use my laptop or turn on the Weather Channel.
Calclator.  2+2 = 4, but there are times you do need to get something right, and calculators are useful. They have all kinds available, including hexidecimal calculators for programmers.
RSS newsfeed reader (I follow about 20+ feeds, including these discussions groups via RSS feeds).
Travel services.  Most airports have WiFi, and you can get updated travel info for your flights via some speciallized travel apps.
If you are into tracking your car mileage, gas usage, maintenance costs, etc..., there are apps for that.
While you can watch video on your iOS device (downloaded movies, YouTube), you can also stream movies from services such as Netflix.  This can be useful when traveling, or if you are stuck in bed with a cold, or if you have lost control of the "Remote" and do not want to watch "Dancing with the Stars"
TV related, there are apps that will give you the TV schedule for your area, so you can browse the shows on this evening.
List.  You can keep lists, including grocery shopping lists, items to pack for a trip lists, things to do for that bathroom remodel, things you need to get before school starts, Christmas lists, etc....  NOTE:  Ideas for Christmas/Birthday/Anniversary gifts may come anytime during the year, but if you do not write them down, you may be scratching your head when the event arrives.  Putting them in a list can help you later on.
You can get a Level app.  You may laugh, but I have actually used my iOS device to check if something was level.  It was there, and a carpenters level was not.  Not perfect, but it did what I needed at the time.
Finding a good resturante (Yelp, Urbanspoon, etc...).  The iOS device can be very helpful in finding a good nearby place to eat when away from home, or even discovering a new play where you live to get out of that eat at the same place rut.
That is some of the things I use my iOS device for.

  • When you sync your Ipod using Itunes does it back up your photos?

    Title says it all,
when you sync your ipod does it back up your photos automatically.. Preferrably the photos that are in the camera roll?
My ipod won't turn on at all, I have tried everything and I am thinking it might be a battery issue at this point but anyways.. I might buy the Ipod Touch 5th Generation and I REALLY need the photos that I last had on the ipod. The day before the ipod decided to die on me, I synced it to my computer to put music on it and stuff so I am wondering if it backed up the photos as well?

Yes iTunes backs up your iPod automatically every time you sync unless you have the Summary pane in iTunes for the iPod chacked to backup to iCloud. In that case yo have to manually backup to iTunes.
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
Yes, the iPod backup that iTunes makes (and iCloud makes) includes photos in the iPod's Camera Roll album.
