PLEASE READ!!!! Pro Tools user - processor speed upgrades?

Hello all,
I know this is a Logic forum but I thought music people would be able to help me.
I'm a Pro Tools user and I bassically wanted to know if there is any hardware (like some sort of card) that I can buy to manage my processor's workload. I would buy a Pro Tools TDM system, but they cost so much.
I just want my Pro Tools to run smoothly (working with video) and right now, with my single processor - i can't. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
- Josh

There are some suggestions.
it depends on which plugs you need and want to use. For example you can buy TC POWERCORE. Or maybe from Waves a APA. You can choose a UAD Card or, a little bit cheaper a Liquid Mix from Focusrite. All this hardware is used to for managing the plugs, so that your processor is free for other works.
Hope this helps

Truth is, you really need multiple CPU's nowadays, especially for your ProTools filters to stay realtime. And your G4 is getting a little long in the tooth. It's going to be hard to keep it being a viable, up to date machine, as you stuff more and more tasks onto it and expect it to keep up in realtime. There are CPU accelerators for your CPU available (check www.macsales.com, xlr8yourmac.com or others), but you cannot make the jump from one to two procs on your system, and it's a game of declining returns...
If money's an issue, why not sell your G4 and buy a used Dual Proc G5? You may find yourself short only about $1k in the transaction, possibly even less if you get lucky. You will definitely see a major performance difference, and you won't have to reinvest in plugins, cards, etc for the new Intel architecture.

  • Pro Tools User Considering Logic Express

    Hi Everyone,
I've been a Pro Tools LE user for a number of years. When I read that Avid would be charging $250 for an upgrade to Pro Tools LE 9 (plus $40 for the mandatory iLok) I decided to explore other options.
My main concern is with CPU overload. I recently purchased a new Mac Mini with 8GB RAM, and a Glyph external hard drive. I had hoped that the dreaded Pro Tools 6101 CPU overload errors would be a thing of the past, but even with a much more powerful computer, the errors continued, and most frustrating, there would be no rhyme or reason. I could play a 16-track project with no problems, but it would choke on a file with no more than 7 or 8 tracks. Extremely frustrating when you are losing creative time to constantly troubleshoot.
Are there any former Pro Tools users out there who have had similar issues? Have you had any better luck with Logic?

    Hi,
don't know about Pro Tools, but CPU overload usually has to do with a too low buffer setting, and it's the same in Logic. So, in Pro Tools, try to find a preference where you can set the audio buffer to a higher value, and the CPU overloads should be history.
You should not switch DAW's only because of CPU problems. Ask in the PT forum for other solutions. You should only switch if you need the other features of Logic.

I'm a Pro Tools user, who just did an "Archive and Install" installation of 10.5.8 over my 10.4.11 on my 2 Ghz G5, now Pro Tools won't launch.  I checked the extensions folder and sure enough, the digidesign extensions were left behind.  Can I revert back to the "Archive" of my 10.4.11 System from the "Previous Systems" folder?  If not, what's the point of creating the "archive"?

Did you select "Preserve User Settings"?
Archive and Install installation automatically moves existing system files to a folder named Previous System, then installs Mac OS X again. (See tip 3.) You cannot start up your computer using a Previous System folder, nor can you "re-bless" the Previous System folder. (See tip 1.)
You can choose to preserve your user and network settings before installing. This option automatically moves existing users, Home directories, and network settings. This also skips the Setup Assistant after installation.
Note: Because the "Preserve user and network settings" option moves, not copies, existing users, Home directories, and network settings, from the Previous Systems folder to the newly installed System, these items will not exist in the Previous Systems folder after the Archive and Install is complete.

  • How to export song for a pro tools user

how do i export an audio instrument track for a pro tools user? i have a song with audio track and audio instruments and i was wondering if there was a way i could export the audio instruments seperately
    iMAC G5 isight   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   M-audio keystation 49, m-audio firewire 4-10, logic pro 7, yamaha monitors

this is very easy now in logic. look in file -> export and there are a range of options.
export region as audio file, and export tracks as audio files. if you do this (as opposed to OMF which is really only best for audio) then it is worth making sure that the regions start at the same point. it might be worth checking to see if exporting tracks as audio files will do this automatically for you - i have not used the feature.
once the tracks have been exported (and incidentally they will print all the plug-in processing you have applied to them in the channel-strips) then simply import them into PT and start working. obviously they should all start at the same position.

Unless changes were made to the 6100 series that spares dealers don't know about then the processor is not soldered direct to the board, a locking zif socket is used.
Sorry Rachel, now we're into unknown territory. I looked at http://www.impactcomputers.com/p000363550.html as an example and then using the CPU ID sl6j5 to http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/details.asp?sspec=sl6j5 which indeed is an M processor. Extra parts to consider possibly; the heatsink & fan assembly. As stated before, the current one may only be rated to match the processor originally fitted, on the other hand it may be ok. I suspect nothing else would need changing - I have no idea if Tosh would have limited the BIOS to recognise only one or two CPU types per model (unlikely).
The warnings given by Quad and Andrej re disassembly are extremely important so where possible obtain a service manual prior to doing anything. I have a 6000 copy which may be the same layout, be meticulous in your work. Screws have identifying letter/number combinations meaning differnt types and lengths and must be returned to the correct locations. Some are also supposed to be discarded and new ones put in as they have a vibration proof seal to prevent coming loose, as you will not be doing this, tighten well (not over) and double check your work. The insides are full of delicate cable and wires attaching various parts do not force or pull sharply on anything, lift gently look and trace connections - remember to note the locations and orientation. Plastics are held by regular and often mirrored pips, these are prone to break if not carefully eased apart. If the case is not giving, check for hidden screws under labels or inside compartments like battery/RAM/CD/DVD. The CPU must always be refitted with fresh thermal compound and as everything is tightly packed keep it clean and use sparingly but sufficient to coat the surface thinly. Take care when unlocking/locking the processor that you do not slip - disaster if you hit the SMD components they will break. Once assembled a gentle shake will determine if anything has been forgotten or fallen out and watch out for the left over screw at the end!! The whole process can be very daunting so approach only if you have the utmost confidence and can live with repercussions - nothing is guaranteed.
And don't forget - anti-static precautions at all times!

    No card available with ProTools.
Unless you buy a ProTools mix or HD system (btw mix systema are way down in price and still work fine...) you have to rely on your processor strenght. It also depends on which software version of ProTools you are running. If you still have 6.x, no matter if you have 2 or 4 processor you can only use one at a maximum percentage of 85%, if you have ProTools 7.x you can take advantage of a multiprocessor machine and squeeze processor usage at 99%. Anyway video managing of ProTools LE is not very powerful, you will surely find limitations...

  • Pro Tools or Logic

I'm not writing this thread to start a war, its just that I'm having a very hard time deciding between Pro Tools or Logic. I would eventually like to use both, but I can only afford to go with one right now and I really only want to focus my attention on one at this time as well.
Overall, I am really leaning towards Logic with a MOTU interface. However, the more I read the Pro Tools Vs. Logic debate, the more I start to question what to go with. I read so many posts with people bashing Pro Tools, but most people I know use it, most pro studios use it, and most musicians I've researched use it. Logic, on the other hand, seems like a complete package, made more for the creative side of composing/songwriting. I can get an awesome studio set with Logic/MOTU for MUCH less $$ than a Pro tools rig.
However, it seems like going the Pro Tools LE route, Digi 002, (which Is all I can afford at this point), I will be compromising quality overall. The only reason I can see going with Pro Tools is because so many people use it and it would be easy to transfer files with other Pro Tools users. Other than that, I really would like to take the Logic route.
For the record, I play guitar and bass and use drum machines. I would like to start getting more familar with midi and Logic seems like a good program for that.
What do you all think. This decision is really driving me crazy. Thanks.

    Jack,
I am a composer who has used Pro Tools since it came out over a decade ago. I have had all kinds of systems, as Digi changed over the years.
I finally ran out of money when HD came out. I could not afford to upgrade my Mix system, yet I wanted to use the most current version of the program, which Mix no longer supported. So I sold it, and got LE and an 002R. I have used this system for over a year. I have done national commercials with it and it has paid for itself many times.
I use a lot of stereo samples. That eats up tracks. The 32 track limit in LE, and the instability of virtual instrument plug ins in LE made me start thinking about Logic. It wasn't the converters in the 002R....they are terrible and you must buy something like an Apogee Mini Me and then it sounds great going in.
But it was a little over a week ago that I bought Logic 7.2. Yesterday, I had a song with 58 tracks playing back just fine on my G5. The virtual instruments work great too. It is a much harder program to use than Pro Tools, but it is much richer and deeper. There are frustrating things about it that make you scratch your head, but these are minor compared to what it gives back to you.
Unless you have over 10 grand to get a REAL Pro Tools system, and then face the fact that it will be replaced by something else in a couple years that will require you to sink thousands more into it, get Logic and take on the learning curve. Pro Tools is best for cutting audio, not dealing with midi and composers. And, I think now that Apple owns it, it will only get better, and probably easier, to work with. Buying into Digi, remember, is buying into a hardware company. They want people to get a "taste" of Pro Tools with LE, and then move up to to HD. They don't understand that most people, with the power of computers today, ain't moving up to a 10 grand system when they can do almost all of that in Logic, or even Digital Performer, Nuendo, etc.
Keep saying this to yourself...."Digidesign is a hardware company. They want and need me to buy HARDWARE to remain in existence. Hardware....hardware...money...more money.

  • Take - As in Pro Tools?

Beign a Logic guy for about 6 years now, I was recently in a session with a Pro Tools user and wacthed as he quickly flipped through different takes of a song via a pull down menu. No deleting, repeated tracks, folders...
Is there any such feature in Logic that I have been missing all this time?
Also, it seemed very convenient that all regions (12) had the various track names/colours applied. I only know how to give them 1 name at a time and color them later.
    Any tips?

    So you can
use take one of the piano with take 3 of the lead
guitar, and then, say, you decide you actually want
take 2 of the guitar youj can select it and there it
is. No hunting around the audio window, and much
tidier arranges. It's great for comping things like
    vocals as well
Hmm... interesting feature. What happens if you want to mix various takes though?
I've started using folders in Logic quite a bit. I use them for structuring but also for comping with the cycle and mute feature described by Sondod, Marc and others. I pack all the takes in a folder and work from there, eliminating the screen clutter. I use the scissors+option trick to split everything up evenly and then select what I like with the mute tool, color coding the parts that are keepers as I go along.
Once I'm done I bring all the good parts on a track which i unpack, leaving only the outtakes in the folder (muted tracks will not unpack when you invoke the command, making it easy to select what goes back in the upper level arrange and what stays behind). And since you can nest folders within each other, you can keep just one outtake folder in your arrange window and have individual comps folders inside.
It sounds like a lot of work but it's actually pretty clean and fast with the right key commands. I'd love to see the feature you're talking about at work though. Sounds elegant...

  • 10.4.11 Pro Tools Compatability

As i was installing 10.4.11 through software update an error occoured in the update. I then had to do an archive install. Once installed i ran the 10.4.11 combo update. Everything is working fine except Pro Tools. Everytime i try to launch the application i get the "black screen of death". I have tried uninstalling and re installing pro tools with no luck. I have also verified my HD, along with running the pre binding script application. Do i have to go back to 10.4.9? to reinstall pro tools, and if so is the only way of doing this by archive and installing off my original install disc? I am desperate as this is my lively hood and projects are due!

    Hi Thomas,
I'm not a pro tools user but I have been perusing the digidesign site and was wondering if you had tried downloading and running the OS X Prebinding script? According to digidesign:
"Although Mac OS X 10.4.10 and 10.4.11 have not been tested or qualified by Digidesign, the only known issue at this time has to do with Pro Tools failure to launch in some cases due to improper prebinding. In many cases, downloading and running the Mac OS X Prebinding Script from PACE may resolve the issues described above"
Check out this link, it might be of help: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=54&langid=100&categoryid=35&itemid=229 04

  • Xport OMF or XML from Fcp5 for 5.1 mix?(Pro Tools better?)

Is anyone using Logic to do there fcp project sweetening or is everyone a die hard Pro Tools user? I figured Logic Pro 7 would be the better way to go since I have apples tools. I also found out that PT LE does not support surround mixing. Well fact is I can't afford the PT/TDM gear. So can I get audio from my timeline in fcp to logic and still retain audio attributes and accomplish a surround mix well with Logic Pro 7 or is this left to the big boys with the PT tools? Any direction/workflow? My goal is to recut some real old school short I made and redo it all with fcp studio and freshening up the audio and finally surround mix it. Am I crazy or is someone doing this type of stuff...for fun?
Peace. Thanks any info would be supa fly.

    aka:downtownbrown
ps: I also have the Tascam fw-1884 surface to get the mix in and out and m-audio studiphile monitors.

I never use the keyframes for audio.
Because indeed the audio-guy will not receive that info from the omf.
What I always do is add transitions to the audio. sometimes need to scirror the audio. adjust the level on the second part and the ad a transition.
This way your audio-guy will know he needs to do 'something' on that point in the mix. he will not get the level information, but he'll see you made a transition there. together with your scratch mix (see danny boy's post) he'll figure out...
