Please recommend a dual layer dvd writer drive...

For my Dual 2.0 GHz G5.
Looking for something reliable, fast, cheap and will write dual-layer dvds as well as all the other usual stuff.
Thank you

Hi Red Havoc.
I've got the same machine and I fitted a Pioneer DVR - 115D and it runs fine. You have to play a bit with the height of the screws to get it to fit snugly. I couldn't use the black knurled screws on the original drive cos it rides too high with them and the tray gets caught on the edge of the aperture. I think I just used some long hard drive screws in the end. It' quite straightforward.
There's a bloke on eBay who is doing them for about 25 quid at the mo.
I think any Pioneer optical drive will fit plug and play as they supply all the Apple originals anyway.
Good luck,
L2K8

  • Dual Layer DVD write error #80020022 - failure to communicate with disk

    This only happens on Dual Layer DVDs, and always just as it's finishing. "Communcation with the disk drive failed error code: 80020022"
    Used Disk Util and direct burn via finder - both give same error. The image is a .cdr created via DiskUtil, original from a factory cut dual layer DVD, about 7.2GB. The target blank is a "Double Layer DVD+R" Memorex.
    The resultant disk is full, but unusable. Re-insertion sees it as a blank disk with no usable space. It wrote something, but certainly not the TOC?
    MacBook Pro 2.5, about 6 months old, lastest Leopard
    Please - any ideas? Do I have a hardware issue?

    Wow - thanks for the quick reply, pullman! I did all of the ideas you listed, no luck. The only way to make this fail is to write to a double sided DVD, I've gone through a stack already just testing/failing. This also fails when writing to a double sided DVD through the finder (then clicking on "burn")
    Here's a copy of the console error logs:
    http://baxnet.com/bs/picture6.png
    -- which indicate a hardware/polling error on the DVD drive itself.
    Note that it is complaining about /dev/disk1, which on my system maps to the DVD drive:
    Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-867
    Revision: HA13
    Serial Number: HG010865
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
    Low Power Polling: Yes
    Thanks again for your help - but still no luck. According to the logs, this may well be a device/hardware problem. Would you suggest a call to Apple support?

  • Recommendations on Dual Layer DVD Burner Purchase

    Anyone have any recommendations on a Dual Layer DVD burner to purchase to replace the old superdrive?

    Nope - both formats are for both platforms, but there was a spate of +R players and discs made available on PCs when Apple were only using -R. However, I have two or three PC burners that were -R only (and are now sitting on a shelf somewhere) from those days. The capacity of both is so close as to not be an issue, although +R does hold slightly more data. The gross capacity of a DVD-R is 4.7GB, which is in fact 4.372GB when used in a computer. For DVD+R the gross is 4.73GB which converts to 4.377GB on your computer. I guess for some folk that additional capacity might be necessary, but it isn't really worth worrying too much about, IMO.
    Using dual format drives is a good idea, as you can then use either type of disc... however if you read into the background of the formats you'll see that -R is slightly ahead of +R in the compatibility stakes, although more and more players are able to deal with both equally well.
    When it comes to burning a DVD in your superdrive, the slower you burn the better the compatibility is likely to be, however some folk report 100% success with fast burns every time (I've had my share of problems with faster burners). As long as you get an Apple compatible drive you should be OK, if faster burning is what you want to do.
    Layer break points - on a dual layer disc there comes a point when the laser in the player has to switch from the first to the second layer in order to access the data written there. The point at which this happens is controllable by the DVD author and is called the layer break point. However, on some media (specifically dual layer DVD-R) there is no point in setting this up as the first layer will get written until full, no matter what. There will then be an automatically set break point. When this occurs the change over is flagged as 'seamless' which is intended to make a smooth switch over but there are some players which cannot handle this kind of switch and it needs to be flagged as non-seamless. Other types of media (DVD+R DL) will allow you to set the break point where you want it and will allow you to set it as non-seamless. This helps increase the compatibility of your disc when playing back in set top players.
    In DVDSP this means it is probably better to use DVD+R DL media when creating a DL sized project.

  • Leopard Dual Layer DVD, Macbook drive

    Well i'm planning upon purchasing leopard but i was wondering, does the 13inch macbook 1.8ghz model have a DVD reader capable of reading dual layer DVDs? I was wondering because i've noticed its called a Combo drive. Also when i bought my macbook, it came with tiger install DVDs, single layer, two of them. Anyone whos been able to install leopard on their macbook 13inch 1.8ghz proccessor, it would be great if you could just post a reply saying it works. I cant wait to order

    Thanks for the reply, but the only thing that makes me think now is, my drive cant burn DVDs, however it can read them, i suppose i only have to find one of my old windows DL DVDs and just try mounting them,
    Thanks

  • Blu Ray drive/burner can't write dual layer DVD - W500 Vista 64

    I recently did a clean Vista 64 Business install on a new hard drive. I pretty much have everything up and going, except the Blu Ray drive doesn't recognize that it can write dual layer DVDs. I ran Nero InfoTool and it, too, tells me that the drive cannot write dual layer DVDs. (Pretty much everything in InfoTool is checked, read and write, except all the HD-DVDs and the dual layer DVD write functions.) Does anyone have any ideas? My understanding is that the drive can write dual layer DVDs.

    I'll answer this with the same information that I posted at TPF:
    From: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70234
    Reads or writes data with speedy maximum data transfer rates of:
    * 16x maximum (writing to CD-R media)
    * 10x maximum (writing to CD-RW media)
    * 5x maximum (writing to DVD-RAM media)
    * 8x maximum (writing to DVD+/-R media)
    * 4x maximum (writing to DVD+/-RW media)
    * 2x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE SL media)
    * 1x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE DL media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-ROM, CD-R media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-RW media)
    * 8x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R SL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R DL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-RW/+RW media)
    * 5x maximum (reading DVD-RAM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-ROM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-R/RE SL/DL media)
    It appears that DL (dual layer) writing in DVD-R and DVD+R formats is not supported.

  • Create recovery media Demands dual layer DVD's

    Good evening everyone.
    I just accepted the delivery of my 5 brand new notebooks for my company's new workers.
    3 of those notebooks are HP Probook 450 G2's (PN: J4R69EA)
    (These are the models with the 128GB SSD drives)
    The other two are Lenovo E540’s with similar specs.
    So first things first, create recovery media. So that is done before I hand them to the end users in question.
    While trying to create the windows disc, the "HP Recovery Disc Creator" program demands Dual layer DVD's: "Please insert a Dual-Layer DVD to proceed"
    The DVD's in question I’m using are "Sony DVD+R 120min/4.7GB" discs that in the past have always worked. (and at this moment are working for the Lenovo portables)
    Searching this forum pointed me to :
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03481733&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en#N80
    Unfortunately this is not the same interface I have. I can only choose a drive to create a backup to
    (in this case it is Drive F:\ for internal drive)
    I also tried an external DVD writer with the same results.
    I have not tried a USB stick, but this is not what I want and since you can only create one set of backups…
    Link to a screenshot: (you need to copy paste it into your browser apparently)
    http://loxsvc.netau.net/HP/HP%20Discss.png
    This would not be that big of a problem if there was an actual windows 7 key printed on the portable.
    If I had a key, I would just reinstall the machine straight away with a clean windows 7 image so I dont have to clean out all the HP software.
    but unfortunatly this is not the case. so i need a Windows 7 Recovery disc to be created.
    Any suggestions besides buying DL DVD's?
    Thank you for your time

    Hey @SCamm ,
    To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this at Commercial Forums.
    Dual-layer recording allows DVD-R and DVD+R discs to store significantly more data. DVD+R DL also called DVD+R9 are what is needed to create the Recovery media on this notebook.  Sorry to say.

  • Satellite A300 - Can't burn dual layer DVD

    Hi, I bought my laptop 10 months ago.
    Since then Ive been burning a disk or two every now and then, no intense usage of the driver.
    Last week I tried to burn a dual layer DVD, my driver seems not to be able to burn one. I used BurnXP a free burning software that supports dual layer and when it finished the first layer the program stoped responding, I tried 2-3 disk none worked.
    Then I tried the latest version of Nero, everything seemed smooth (it burned both layers) until the burning process finished then I got an error message that the procedure was unsuccessful.
    Ive tried different brands of disk "TDK" "Philips" "Verbatim" or something. None worked.
    I tried a Philips disk on my desktop drive and it burned it just fine.
    - Should I head for Toshiba service ?
    - Is there any driver/firmware to fix my problem ?
    PS: I searched for firmware upgrades but cant find a firmware for my drive .
    I have the "matsita DVD-RAM uj-850s and I used the right type of disks DVD-
    typ in advance.

    >Then I tried the latest version of Nero, everything seemed smooth (it burned both layers) until the burning process finished then I got an error message that the procedure was unsuccessful.
    You received this message but did you check the DL DVD after that?
    Maybe the data was burned correctly?
    I received a lot of time the message that the burning procedure was not successful but I tested then the disk and it was readable.
    As far as I know the user manual should contains also some info about tested and compatible disk.
    Maybe you should use the DL DVD recommended in this user manual.
    But of course this could be also a hardware ODD issue.
    In such case you should ask the ASP for the test and check!

  • Dual Layer DVD reader for Sun Blade 2500?

    Can anyone recommend a dual layer DVD reader that will work with the Sun Blade 2500 (Silver)? Either something to replace the built-in single layer reader or something that will work externally either via firewire or USB.
    Thanks!

    I haven't had occasion to use a dual-layer drive yet, but I've found that all the external and internal Sony drives I've ever happened to plug into my old 1500 worked great...

  • Dual layer DVD burner any time soon?

    I have an old PowerBook 1.33ghz. I'm itching to replace it with a MacBookPro. I upgraded this PowerBook with a dual layer DVD burner, and I use it a lot. I moved to the US from the UK and send many DVD's back to family and friends in the UK. I can't live without the dual layer DVD writer, plus backing up requires less DVD's and hence less space on my shelves.
    Anyone here know when Apple will release a model with a dual layer DVD writer? I refuse to buy an external.
    This old G4 has better DVD support than Apples flagship portable computer, doesn't seem right does it. I keep thinking I can live without dual layer, but its just such a step back.
    Anyone know of when this may change and MacBookPro will get a dual layer burner? I dont know how long I can wait to get my hands on the new MacBookPro . . .

    As soon as the industry can make one (so thin). I'll be buying one to replace it on my MBP. Might be Blu-ray

  • Optical drive won't burn dual layer dvd

    Yes, mine is capable of burning Dual layer dvds. It was the $1299 Core 2 Duo version 1 rev. ago. Got it in October. In the System Profiler it says DVD-Write: +R DL.
    So, I stick a +R DL disk in there, and every time I go to write to it, the disc gets spit out and it says please insert a blank dvd. Now, you might think I'm inserting full DVD+r DL disks, however, that's impossible, because this is my only dvd writer I own and there is no way every disk in my pack came out of the box full of data.
    Is there a brand that is guaranteed to work, does just my optical drive suck, or do all optical drives in macbooks suck and it's just a silly joke? I've seen quite a few threads claiming their dual layer writers don't work.

    Noah Apodaca1 wrote:
    I'm also having difficulties burning DL discs. I'm using Toast Titanium 7.1.2 and I just got done with 30+ minutes of burn time only to receive an error stating "The drive reported an error: Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR; Sense Code = 0x02; NO SEEK COMPLETE"
    I've been trying to use Windata DVD+R DL discs and I've got a nice collection of coasters so far. Is this something I should use my AppleCare to try to address, or is this a media issue?
    I have experienced the EXACT same problem using Memorex DVD+R DL discs (not my fave), so I do not believe this has anything to do with the brand of discs.

  • Cannot Write Dual Layer DVDs on Pavilion G6 laptop

    Hi,
    I have a Pavilion G6 2213sa laptop with a DVD-RAM UJ8B1 DL DVD RW, I can burn single layer DVDs no problems and CDs however when I try to burn a Dual Layer DVD in either UDF or ISO using Nero or ImgBurn it just fails each time when attempting to burn layer 2.
    I have tried to update the drivers but can't find any later ones than the Microsoft one that was from 2006 which I find old. I'm not sure what else I can do, can anyone else help with this? I've only had the laptop for 1 month. I can't see it being a fault with the drive it if it burns CDs and DVDs alright.

  • Media write error for dual layer DVD burn

    I am having a problem burning a dmg to a dual layer DVD using the internal DVD writer. I have tried both Disk Utility and SimplyBurns.
    Both program s go through the preparation for the file, and when it attempts to burn the disk I get a 'media write error'. I am using Memorex DVD +R DL disks. I have successfully burned both CDs and regular DVDs with the drive.
    Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can fix this?
    Thanks

    I am using Memorex DVD +R DL disks.
    Try Verbatim DVD+R DL discs.
