Please recommend a right-angled PCI-e 16x riser card/cable for a Media Live

The IGP in my Media Live is not running properly, or nVidia's drivers for it are just crap (more likely, I guess), so I need to fit a dedicated video card.  The riser fitted for the supplied Hauppage WinTV card is for a PCI slot...  I have Aero turned off, which ameliorates teh problem but some windows/applications still don't render properly.
I am having trouble finding a suitable riser card for a PCI-e 16x slot though.  The main problem is that the 16x slot is not directly underneath the mounting points for the riser card, which means I need a riser with a flexible cable.  Secondly it needs to be right angled and thirdly the slot needs to lie lower than the mounting holes.  Most every riser card I've seen has the slot level with or above the mounting holes, however this would not work in the Media Live case.
In a pinch, I guess I could live with a PCI graphics card... but are there ANY modern PCI graphics cards????
So is there a recommended riser card I should use, or am I stuck?

CPU in and running fine.  No issues so far, although I haven't run it under load yet.
My Titan heatsink was a tricky fit, the heatpipes are literally touching the RAM heatsinks (though not pressing against them) and the holes in the motherboard were on the large side.  Installation instructions were ok but parts bags mislabled!  And the supplied thermal  paste was horrible...  still, it really is a low profile heatsink and one rated to 130Ws - unlike just about every other one out there!    The fan I fitted is a Scythe Gentle Typhoon 92mm unit and is really quiet!  I hadn't realised just how noisy the original machine was, but with the Typhoon and the Silverstone PSU fitted it is genuinely quiet.   Lastly, unlike the GT64 fitted before, it's fins go sideways, not front/backwards, and that means air coming off the heatsink will now go over the heatsink on the NB...
Speaking of which, I discovered the NB heatsink was rather loosely fitted.  I'm going to score an aftermarket one with a bigger sink and *maybe* a fan and fit that soon.  With proper thermal paste.
Lastly, since they were mentioned as a potential problem, I took a pic of what I think are the VRMs?
If I'm right, I can readily fit a heatsink to those if it would help.
With 8GBs of RAM and a 600GB Velociraptor coming, I am going to do a new windows build soon with 64bit Ultimate.  After that, all I have to do is source a slot-load BR drive and the upgrades will be done.  Modding the case will be another job...

  • Could someone please recommend the best program to convert AVI and MPEG files for use (and exporting) into IMovie 11?

Hi - I understand I need to convert AVI and MPEG files for use within IMovie 11. I have one particular file that has a watermark stating "Created with Flip4Mac WMV Demo". Can someone please recommend the best program for a novice?  Thanks!

    Hi Susan,
It is no simpler converting vobs to mp4 than mpg (mpeg2).
There is *always* a loss of quality converting video from one lossy-compressed format to another, e.g. mpeg2 to mp4.
So, if you want to not lose any quality, then converting vobs to mpeg2 (mpg) is the thing to do (since there will be no video/audio re-compression), assuming Lr5 will accept them (sorry, but I do not know). example commands:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
If Lr5 won't accept them, then you can convert to mp4 with minimal quality loss using a command like:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
You may need variations of these commands depending on encoding of vob.
Note: -i means -input-file; -sameq means -same-quality, as much as possible.
ffm... is smart enough to avoid re-encoding, if possible, when -sameq is used, and makes reasonable choices for audio/video codecs based on extension of output file.
Of course, you'll need to download/install ffm... program if not already on your machine, and execute commands in a terminal or command window.
Do keep us posted please .
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Can anyone recommend a Windows 7 compatible USB audio/video interface for Adobe Media Live Encoder??

Any suggestions?  Also, are they hardware appliances that replace Adobe Media Live Encoder?

I use this one with Windows 7:http://www.chronos.com.tw/Product/E/2/USB%20Movie%20Editor/USB%20Movie%20Editor.htm
It worked bad with out of box Windows 7.
But after all updates it works very well and stable.
A nice thing is that it has little USB extender cable included. So it is less harmful for laptop usb port.

My iphone 4 photo/message auto rotation was not functioning, might be accidentally locked as I can see a locked symbol with a circle with an arroe surrounding it at the top right angle , next to the power % indicator. This function was working perfectly since day 1.
Please advise how to unlock it.

Swipe upwards from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center. You will then find the orientation lock in the top row, last icon on the right. White is on, black is off. Tap and turn it off. If you see the lock symbol, then orientation lock is on, and that is what is keeping it in the portrait mode.

any short right angled jack advice greatly appreciated

Once you get this TOSLink cable, you might consider buying this Gefen "Digital Audio to Analog Audio Converter".  It takes the optical (fiber) cable in or RCA digital in... and gives you an RCA stereo analog output.  Of course, it's not digital anymore, but it's great for getting clean sound out of a laptop and into an analog application.
    It looks like this;
This is a great device to have and only costs around $60.

Please recommend personal finance software for Mac that allows month to month analysis of spending by categories.  Quicken on a PC was good at this.  Mint seems very limited.

Quicken for Mac 2007 works just fine (and is said to be compatible with Mavericks).  It is often denounced for not being "modern", but when something works, and does everything I want, I need a good reason to switch.
A few years ago (2011), I got that reason when I upgraded OSX and Quicken stopped working due to the absence of Rosetta.  I switched to iBank.  I used it for more than a year.  It was cumbersome, they have no sense of a helpful user interface, but it "works".  I found ONE feature that I liked:  you can attach an image (or any file) to a register entry, so I can save receipts right with the register.
But when Intuit came out with the revised Quicken 2007 for Mountain Lion, I gladly went back.  I found that being able to update stock prices right in the portfolio view (for those not automatically found online) was handy - in iBank you have to generate a report to see the holdings, and then you have to switch to a view of "Securities" then scroll down through that list to find your stock, then "edit" then change the price, then "Save" then go back to reports and re-generate the portfolio view.  Also, if you enter a stock purchase in a Quicken register, the price you paid gets added to the price history for the stock (as of the date of the transaction).  No such help in iBank.  Most of the helpful UI features (like increasing the date with the + key) are glaringly missing in iBank.  I find I am getting no more than about 3-4 keystrokes before having to move the mouse and click.
If you are considering sharing the app on an iPad, Quicken won't work, but I found that iBank for iPad doesn't work either.  The interface is completely different from the Mac version, you can't do much with it, and if you have a stock whose price is $11.25 / share and sell 200 shares, you might find that $22.50 gets added to your cash in the account.  (I actually made a few million dollars when it decided that 200 shares at $11.25  yielded $2,250,000.)  Luckly, I received a refund for that app.
Depending on how the Mavericks switch goes, I hope to be able to stick with Quicken, but I am keeping my records up-to-date in both now, because I can live with iBank.  I will just have to keep an eye on its arithmetic.

  • How to implement my right angle routing strategy in Ultiboard?

    Hi,
I want to design a PCB to save me from a lot of dirty work with SCB68 blocks. We are using many PCI-6225 cards to aquire 0-10V signals from a test rig. The signals are bundled together as 20 channels per cable including 20 signal wire and 1 AI_SENSE wire.
So I need to convert two SCSI 68pin connector to four Dsub37 female connectors for each PCI-6225 card. I used Multisim to build the schematics and Ultiboard to draw PCB. First I cannot find PCI-6225 connector's information in multisim, so I used M_series 60x1's symbol in the library and modified it to meet the datasheet of PCI-6225.
Then when I transport the file to Utilboard, the auto routing algorithm gave me a spider web :-( So I want to use the following right angle routing strategy to get a simpler PCB. red line is in the copper_bottom, green line in the copper_top, and blue circles are vias. the rest of the board will be covered with GND.
The only problem is: I do not know how to implement this alogrithm. Can anyone help me?
P.S. I do not have strong EMI requirements. So I think this design should be fine in my low speed DAQ application.

    程迪,
You could also route a bus - create all signals on the 68 pin connector as part of a bus group then press (Ctrl_B) and click on all signals that you want to route within the bus and then start routing away from the connector on your preferred layer.
These best practices guides in Ultiboard should also help with routing techniques...

  • Would somebody please recommend a good personal budget app for me?

I have researched this quite a bit and even made up my own budget, but I'm looking for something that I can control myself, is easy to use and that is flexible enough for me to add as many different items or categories as needed. It would also be helpful if it has columns and keeps the columns neat and straight. What I'm using right now does not do that and can be problematic. Please recommend something simple for recording cash flow and expenses in a real easy manner.

I need digital outs so I can plug in the signal from my pre-amp, use the A/D convertors on the Audio Interface to make it digital, then send it to my Mac using the best possible means. If I lacked the digital outs, there would be no point in having the thing, as I would only be using the A/D convertors in my Mac anyway!
I was looking at the Hercules 16/24 FW Audio Interface. It seems to do everything I need (plus more), and I can get it for £200. - Does anyone have experience of this Interface? - Is it any good?
Thanks for all the suggestions so far, - keep em coming please

  • Please Recommend reliable USB Hub?

RE: Please recommend reliable USB Hub?
It seems not all "Hi-Speed-give-me-a-break-where-are-my-firewire-ports-Steve-dangit" USB devices ports are linking up so easily as advertised these days, at least not for me.
1.0_I Am Looking for a reliable USB hub to expand the port set on a Mac Book Aluminum 2.0 13" Recommendations?
Specifically a USB hub that can connect Little disk drives via the USB extractable cable.
Tried a BELKIN Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Mini Hub (Grey zippo sized case with flip-up section reveals extractable USB cable plus extension) no such luck.
    Thanks to all who reply

    Maczbook wrote:
Indeed Apple recommends you rfirst option, which seems best. the 7 port model is just "wild"
The USB spec says that there can't be greater than 4 ports per USB hub, as well as a limit of five hub extension. There's a reason why it's typically 7 (and not 8) ports. It would be possible by making an 8-port USB hub, with one internal hub using two ports for two four port hubs for a total of 8 ports. A typical 7-port model would internally be considered two 4 port USB hubs, with the second hub connected to one port of the first hub. It could make a difference if more downstream hubs are connected (running into the limit of five consecutive), and there might be some differences in the host granting requests depending on which devices are connected to which ports.
As for recommendations - I can't fine it right now, but I remember using an unpowered hub sold by Targus. It was 4 port, but I liked that it had three side-by-side ports along with a single port at the end. The single one was ideal for non-standard sized USB devices like some really wide USB flash drives. I never really assume that the label corresponds to the manufacturer, since there are a host of lookalike hubs which are made by one company and relabelled by others.
One thing that irks me about all MacBook designs is because of the 13" screen they've placed the USB ports really close to each other. It makes it impossible to use a standard sized plug along with something like a USB flash drive. My older iBook had the USB ports spaced maybe 3 mm further apart, which was enough room to insert a SanDisk Cruzer micro.

    Hi Juan,
He is a link to Plantronics website with a list of headsets they support with the SPA525G's.
    http://www.plantronics.com/us/configurator/default.jsp?use=Deskphone&wl=&ec=&sl=&spn=&skb=&sds=
The Voyager Legend looks like that may be a good option. Plantronics supports this headset with Bluetooth and as long as you the right phone load with Bluetooth enabled, then you should not have any issues.
    Hope this helps.

Please recommend best quad i7 & intel mb for PP cs5.5
Looking for best bang for the buck. 6 sata drive connectors, usb3 also.
doing mostly avchd. Utilizing software 2 drive raid0. Win 7 64bit. I usually convert my avchd footage to more editable formats before i edit them.

    Steve,
I assume that you already have a single non-RAID OS disk in addition to the 2-disk aid0. If that's the case, I'd strongly recommend two additional disks and create a second aid0 array.
If on the other hand the 2-disk aid0 are the only disks that you have (and used for absolutely everything including the OS and programs), then get at least three more disks: One single non-RAID disk for the OS and programs plus two identical disks and create a second aid0 array with that pair.
With either of those configurations, if you are going to transcode AVCHD to a format with an intermediate codec, then you can get away with the "Budget" quad-core i5 system (however, I would change the 192-core GTX 550 Ti to a 336-core non-Ti GTX 560 since the prices for those two right now are closer together than the differences in performance between them). But if you're going to edit AVCHD directly in Premiere Pro CS5.5, you will need at least the "Economical" (i7-2600(K)) system in order to edit smoothly.
Oh, I see that you are actually looking for an i7. In this case, then, unless you are willing to spend at least $1,000 just for the CPU and mobo, the only current choices would be in LGA 1155: the i7-2600, 2600K and 2700K. The non-K CPU is limited-overclockable (meaning that you'll get only 3.9GHz out of that CPU maximum) while the other two can be overclocked further (to 4.4GHz and up with most chips). The i7-3820 isn't on reseller shelves yet, but from what I read it should perform on a par with a slightly overclocked i7-2600K.
For the motherboard, I'd recommend a Z68 board from Asus, MSI or Gigabyte. (Or, if you choose the i7-3820 when it begins shipping to resellers, your only feasible choices would be an X79 / LGA 2011 mobo from Asus or Intel since the X79 boards from Gigabyte suffer from quality issues with the VRMs used on those boards.) Keep in mind, however, that the lower-priced Z68 boards from the three brands are more difficult than pricier Z68 mobos to achieve a high stable overclock because the budget boards often lack manual CPU core voltage adjustments per se (they have only voltage offsets instead). Pricier Z68 mobos have fixed manual CPU voltage settings in addition to offsets.

Just get the new Apple LED Cinema Displays. They may be more expensive but the Mini DisplayPort plugs right in to the iMac without an adapter.
