Please recommend USB 2 card or interface for G5

I'm looking for a USB 2 interface or USB 2 PCIX card for my PPC G5 2.3.
It doesn't have to run hard drives, but should be able to power things like a scanner.

doing mostly avchd. Utilizing software 2 drive raid0. Win 7 64bit. I usually convert my avchd footage to more editable formats before i edit them.

    Steve,
I assume that you already have a single non-RAID OS disk in addition to the 2-disk aid0. If that's the case, I'd strongly recommend two additional disks and create a second aid0 array.
If on the other hand the 2-disk aid0 are the only disks that you have (and used for absolutely everything including the OS and programs), then get at least three more disks: One single non-RAID disk for the OS and programs plus two identical disks and create a second aid0 array with that pair.
With either of those configurations, if you are going to transcode AVCHD to a format with an intermediate codec, then you can get away with the "Budget" quad-core i5 system (however, I would change the 192-core GTX 550 Ti to a 336-core non-Ti GTX 560 since the prices for those two right now are closer together than the differences in performance between them). But if you're going to edit AVCHD directly in Premiere Pro CS5.5, you will need at least the "Economical" (i7-2600(K)) system in order to edit smoothly.
Oh, I see that you are actually looking for an i7. In this case, then, unless you are willing to spend at least $1,000 just for the CPU and mobo, the only current choices would be in LGA 1155: the i7-2600, 2600K and 2700K. The non-K CPU is limited-overclockable (meaning that you'll get only 3.9GHz out of that CPU maximum) while the other two can be overclocked further (to 4.4GHz and up with most chips). The i7-3820 isn't on reseller shelves yet, but from what I read it should perform on a par with a slightly overclocked i7-2600K.
For the motherboard, I'd recommend a Z68 board from Asus, MSI or Gigabyte. (Or, if you choose the i7-3820 when it begins shipping to resellers, your only feasible choices would be an X79 / LGA 2011 mobo from Asus or Intel since the X79 boards from Gigabyte suffer from quality issues with the VRMs used on those boards.) Keep in mind, however, that the lower-priced Z68 boards from the three brands are more difficult than pricier Z68 mobos to achieve a high stable overclock because the budget boards often lack manual CPU core voltage adjustments per se (they have only voltage offsets instead). Pricier Z68 mobos have fixed manual CPU voltage settings in addition to offsets.

  • Please recommend a sound card for TV hoo

I want to connect left & right channel outputs to a TV and have my desktop audio standard setup. Can anyone recommend a card for me?

Well if I understand you correctly you want to be able to hear your TV through your computer speakers...
if so: Soundblaster Li've 5. or Soundblaster 24bit (which I think is being replaced by Audigy SE for the same great price).
These 2 cards worked perfectly for me as far as doing something simple as that. Other than those anything with at least a LINE IN function should do the job nicely if your under a budget.
IF YOU WISH TO HEAR YOUR COMPUTER THROUGH YOUR TV SPEAKERS. (Which I think is kinda unusual but hey its possible.)
Then really any soundcard will work just fine IMO. You just need to have a LINE IN/AUX (with stereo) capability built on your TV. They are usually RCA plugs that are red and white. The only accessorie that you would need to buy is a
MALE stereo headphone jack and 2 female stereo RCA Plugs known as a Y connector (it is now commonly seen as a IPOD accessorie one end plugs in the headphone inputs and the other goes on the AUX of a stereo). From my experience the 7-0 dollar version works just as good as the 20 dollar version that you might find.Message Edited by djbonus on 05-8-2006 0:22 PM

  • Would somebody please recommend a good personal budget app for me?

I have researched this quite a bit and even made up my own budget, but I'm looking for something that I can control myself, is easy to use and that is flexible enough for me to add as many different items or categories as needed. It would also be helpful if it has columns and keeps the columns neat and straight. What I'm using right now does not do that and can be problematic. Please recommend something simple for recording cash flow and expenses in a real easy manner.

I need digital outs so I can plug in the signal from my pre-amp, use the A/D convertors on the Audio Interface to make it digital, then send it to my Mac using the best possible means. If I lacked the digital outs, there would be no point in having the thing, as I would only be using the A/D convertors in my Mac anyway!
I was looking at the Hercules 16/24 FW Audio Interface. It seems to do everything I need (plus more), and I can get it for £200. - Does anyone have experience of this Interface? - Is it any good?
Thanks for all the suggestions so far, - keep em coming please

  • Is it recommended that i use an interface for logic 9, if so what brand

waht kind of interface should i get that is relatively cheap and does a good job, is it recommended that even use an interface, i have electric guitars, and a keyboard, and a mic.

If its not an entirely different situation with regard to Logic Pro 8/Logic Pro 9, Apogee makes a few interface options at different price ranges. The Duet is a quality interface as their mid range price option. I have had experience running Logic sessions with the Duet and have had relatively few problems. Also, Apogee typically does a good job integrating their specs/design for Logic users.

  • Please recommend a CF card reader for Mac

I have a iMac (Intel) desktop and also a Windows based PC. I use the newer Mac to process JPEG photos in Lightroom 3, but here's the catch: most of the time my older Sandisk ImageMate 8-in-1 CF reader does not show up in LR3 (I connect the USB plug directly to the back of the Mac's USB slot). It works just fine with the PC. So it may be a hardware problem and I am willing to invest in a new Mac compatible card reader. My Mac runs on OS X (Lion).
Can someone recommend a Mac OS X-compatible CF card reader? I'm getting desperate.

While it is highly probable that getting a new reader will fix your problem one thing in your post gives me pause. You say that most of the time it doesn't show up, but sometimes it does?
You would think that a comparability problem would be an either or situation. It either works or it doesn't. I would check out a few things first before buying a new reader.
First I'd try a different cable, even if this cable works OK on the PC. Second would be to use a differtn USB port on the Mac. Then I would open Image Capture and see if the reader shows up there. Finally open System Information (in te Utilities folder) and in the hardware section select USB with the card reader attached. See if it shows up in the devices.

  • Using USB memory card ready boost for RAM???

I recently purchased a 16 gb  HP memory card for my laptop, in hope to replace my old 4 gb HP memory card I was using priorly for it's ready boost capability. When  checking my computers performance, I noticed one of the places I most commonly lag in is my RAM. So my question is, is there any way I can use any part of the memory I'm gaining from my ready boost in the place of RAM capability?

    Hello william_the22nd,
Unfortunately, you will not be able to use the memory card this way.  You don't mention which notebook you have, or operating system.  Perhaps the troubleshooting steps in this document will help you improve the speed and performance.  Please select the link below which corresponds with your OS.  Please let me know if this helps.

  • Looking for a Web Interface for Editing Data in an Oracle 10g Database

    Greetings all!
My organization is implementing Oracle 10g Release 2 Enterprise version. We have an employee who will need to edit data in the database which will hold staff phone numbers, email addresses, and other contact information. This employee will never need to administer the database or develop tables, queries, etc. They will only need to add and remove rows of data and edit text values stored in a database table.
Does Oracle 10g have a built-in, browser-based tool that can be used to edit data in a table via a friendly user interface? If no, can you please recommend an easy to use tool for editing data in an Oracle database?
Thanks for any help you can provide!
    Rachel

    Justin,
Thanks very much for the tip!
Do you know if Oracle 10g has any kind of built-in tool for editing data? I have heard of "The Vault", but that appears to be a tool for administering database users, reports, etc. I am looking for some kind of tool that shows the data in a grid layout (like Microsoft Excel) and allows someone to edit and save data in that grid. A web-based tool would be best, but a desktop tool (especially if it's already part of Oracle 10g) would also be good.
    Thanks again,
    Rachel

  • Wallstreet - USB PC CARD pcmcia?

I'm upgrading my old wallstreet to G4/500, 320 MB and OSX 10.3
Any recommendations for a good/cheapo USB PC card?
    Especially for backup reasons
    maybe this one? http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10516
    thanks

    Walvis,
The combo cards (FireWire + USB) apparently work well under 10.x but some combos have problems under 9.x.
I would consider these points when buying a card:
    - If you have peripherals like an unpowered 2.5" USB or FireWire HD that requires bus power, you will want to buy a card that a supplemental power supply since PC cards do not supply the required voltage. A USB mouse will work fine on an unpowered card and maybe a keyboard but that's about it.
    - Apple added USB 2.0 drivers when 10.2.8 was released, but these drivers only work well with USB 2.0 PC cards that use the NEC-based USB2 chipset, so stick with those cards.
    - FireWire PC cards rated for Macs have had no driver or compatibility problems with any version of OSX, but there are apparently some cheap-o cards that users have had to replace.
    - In both cases of USB or FireWire or combo cards, buy the correct card and it will work perfectly under 10.2.8 or later with no additional drivers.
    - Here are two USB cards that do have the NEC chipset:
    http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/subpages/cbu2.html
    http://www.macally.com/spec/usb/connecting_device/uh2226.html
    - Here is a FireWire PC card:
    http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/subpages/cbfw2.html
    - Unfortunately, I have spent no time trying to find a FW/USB combo card that meets the above requirements. If you cannot find one, you can use two separate cards simultaneously as long as the physical dimensions permit. Almost all FireWire and USB PC cards now have the large "shoulder" for the ports, so two of these will not fit at the same time. The FireWire card I linked to above has a dongle, so it can reside in the lower slot and the bulbous USB card in the top.

  • Could anyone recommend a reliable card reader for my MacBook Pro please?

    Hi,
Looking for a reliable card reader for compact flash and SD cards for my MacBook Pro.  Would anyone be able to recommend one please?  Most reviews I've read only seem to mention Windows and I'm not sure whether they are Mac compatible.
    Many thanks, Karen

    Karen,
Hi, what year is you macbook pro?  Is it the Early 2008 one with the grey keyboard, or the newer ones with black keys?  If you have the grey keyboard macbook pro I use the Sandisk card reader:
For the newer MacBook Pro's a usb card reader works well in addition to the sd card reader built in the MacBook Pro.  They are making thunderbolt card readers now for a low price:http://computers.pricegrabber.com/flash-memory-readers-accessories/SmartDisk-THU NDERBOLT-SD-STICK-WRITER-USB/m16520521.html

  • Can anyone recommend a USB CF card reader that will work in my Macbook Pro Retina? My USB card readers for CF cards do not work

At present, the only way I can load photos from a CF card to my new Macbook Pro Retina is by loading them onto an external hard drive via an old PC that can accept either of my USB card readers, then plugging the external hard drive into my MBP. Neither the USB card reader or the cable that comes with the Canon HDSLR camera will transfer photos directly to my MBP. I find it unbelievable that I have to go to a PC to load photos because I can't do it with my new MBP.
Has anyone found a reliable USB CF card reader, or one that connects via thunderbolt or HDMI, at any price, that will work directly with the new MBP Retina?

    This is what we need:
Location photoshoot - we use the Canon EOS 5D  Mk II still camera & the Canon FX100 pro camcorder.
CF cards are: SanDisk Extreme UDMA & SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA 6 for video (I think they are both Type II) My Mac recognises them both as FAT 32 format
My MBPRetina is on the latest version of Mountain Lion OSX 10.83
the files from the camcorder will transfer to my MacBook Pro Retina directly via the camera's cable but it is quite slow & it means I cannot continue to film while downloading files but this we can live with.
the files from the still camera Canon EOS 5D  Mk II will not transfer directly via the camera's cable - have yet to get the Canon software to download, but via the camera's cable will not help anyway as we need to have the still camera free to keep shooting.
We need to be able to take out the CF card from the first part of the shoot & download the still shots while just on the Macbook's battery power, while we insert a fresh CF card back into the still camera to continue with the next part of the shoot simultaneously (while the first card is downloading.)
The files from the first part of the shoot will be both in RAW (.CR2) & Jpeg format. We just need to quickly transfer the jpegs, then I do a quick sort, batch the best ones as black/white images, & use these in a client slideshow immediately after part 2 of the shoot.
Obviously we need fast data transfer speeds, & rely on the MBP's battery power while on a location shoot.
The card readers I have tried are an older specific CF card reader branded as Palm, & a USB 2 multi card reader branded as Travel Flash. With both readers, the lights on the readers flash on & off, & the MBP recognises the card & the files will even appear both in Finder & in i-Photo, so it starts importing, then aborts with an error message saying:
'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
    & another message saying:
'the disk was not ejected properly'.
So it appears the MBP does read the CF cards but the card readers don't stay connected, no matter what angle I put them on or however many times I re-connect them.
Yes, they are probably cheap & I want to buy a decent one.
    So, in summary:
the card reader needs to work when the MBPR is only on battery power (I read in some forums that some USB card readers aren't so reliable on the laptop's battery power)
the card reader needs to be quite fast. I have read the USB 3 readers won't read CF cards at higher than USB 2 speeds. Is this true? Are the firewire connected ones faster, & if so, are they still reliable on the MBP's battery power?
From research, it appears my problem is associated with my specific model of Mac & platform, being MacBook Retina on Mountain Lion OSX Version 10.83. If any of the recommended card readers have been successful with this, plese let me know.
Thanks heaps for the suggestions so far.
