Please recommend workflow to re-author DVD at lowere quality setting.

I have to re-author a DVD. Currently its written at 60 minute quality but I'd like it at 120 min. quality to squeeze more content on. I have FCS2 and Mpeg streamclip available. Can someone recommend the simplest way to do it?
Thanks.

So if I fully understand what you want to achieve you want to take the existing "footage" (that you only have as MPEG streams/AC3) and then add some more content.
What I would do is use something like MPEG Streamclip to demux the VOBs of your existing project so you get back separate m2v and AC3 files.
Then create your new Stdio Pro project. Import this demux stream in and the new streams you want to add and create your new project. Build that project to your hard drive so you end up with a VIDEO_TS folder and use DVD2OneX (which I think is a paid for software) to "squeeze" that existing VIDEO_TS to a new smaller VIDEO_TS which will fit on to the DVD-R that you want to fit it on to.
Use Toast to burn the subsequent squeezed project.
If you don't have Toast then save your existing new project as say "New Project Squeezed Version", use MPEG Streamclip to demux the newly squeezed VOBs from the squeezed VIDEO_TS back to m2v/AC3 files and then replace the streams in your "New Project Squeezed Version" with these newly squeezed streams and burn that to DVD from Studio Pro
DVD2OneX makes a very good job of re-compressing MPEGs we have found
Hope that helps and makes sense

  • Please recommend me an external CD/DVD writer to go with new Mac Mini

I'm thinking of buying a new Mac Mini, and I would like an external CD/DVD drive for it. It needs to be able to read and write to both CDs and DVDs, and I'm generally looking for something as cheap as possible. Obviously I don't want something that's going to break within a year though!
I plan on using it to watch DVDs, so something fairly quiet would be ideal. Speed isn't really a big issue for me.
If anyone can recommend something suitable and reliable (or, alternatively tell me what to avoid), I would be very grateful.

What is too expensive? The Apple Superdrive is $79.

I personally use a Samsung Blu-ray drive that burns and reads all.

  • Please recommend multi cam workflow

We're shooting with multiple cameras, and would like a recommended workflow for audio synchronization after clips have been imported from all sources. Is it better to select the clips from one camera, find the corresponding clips from the other cameras, and then perform audio sync, OR is it better to perform audio sync on entire takes from all sources and then select the clips?

The sync'ing in FCPX works really well, I have done a few multicam's, for me I just grabbed the vision from three cameras and audio from a recorder and it all synced beautifully.
    Tips, make sure ALL cameras have audio being captured;
    if possible sync time code on all cameras, if not get the clocks sync'd or really close to make it easier if for somereason it will not sync;
    use a clapper board or something similar at the start of each take, again makes it easier to sync automatically and manually;
biggest one, let the cameras and audio recorders just roll for the duration rather than lots of little clips.

  • Please recommend best DVD burning program and external burner

My FCPX "Share" will no longer burn a DVD on my MacPro 1,1 via the "DVD" destination. However I can send it to "Master File" and it will make a high quality .mov file. I've then tested using Roxio Toast on a 2 minute .mov clip and it did burn a DVD, but the quality was very, very poor. (Much worse than the DVD that I used to be able to get via FCPX Share).
Your thoughts on: 1) Why does FCPX --> Share --> DVD no longer work/ how to fix it?  and 2) Can you recommend the best DVD burning program and external burner? With thanks! Duncan

Toast should give you the highest possible quality so you are obviously doing something wrong.
The only thing I don't like about Toast are the menus  .  .  .  which are total rubbish compared with iDVD.
You should also be able to burn DVDs from FCP X so once again you are either doing something wrong or there is a problem with your FCP X setup or computer.
Try trashing the preferences  using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • Rendered gradient from AE goes blocky on authored dvd from Encore

    Hi,
Here is the background on my project.
I decided to work at 1920x1080 resolution because sometime this year we want to start going blu-ray. I have some text effects etc that I made in AE and also put some 720x480 videos in that I scaled up.
I made a solid with a ramp so that I have a nice soft gradient background behind my text and images. I export to mpeg2-dvd with the quality turned all the way up, but I stretch my project to be 872x486 so that it fits a standard dvd resolution.
I then bring my mpeg2 files into Encore, do my chapters, etc, and build. When I burn and view my project on a standard dvd player my nice soft gradient background is blocky.
Can someone tell me why this is happening? Is it because I am stretching my video to a smaller size? Or is it a quality issue?

Compressing gradients well is one of the hardest things a codec has to do.  But I suspect you are double-compressing your material.  872x486 is not a standard for DVD authoring, as DVDs don't use square pixels, so it's possible you're encoding MPEG2 from AE, then re-encoding it in Encore.
AE is not the world's best compression tool.  I recommend you do the following:
Create a new composition in AE that is a true DVD standard.  Use the presets within AE.  Presuming you're using Widescreen NTSC, 720 × 480 anamorphic pixels (D1 Widescreen preset).
Drag your HD comp into the new comp and resize to fit.
Render the comp to a lossless Quicktime file.  The "Lossless" Output Module is a reasonable choice: it will output a lossless Quicktime Animation file.
Import the file to Encore DVD and allow Encore to do the encoding to MPEG2.
If you still see blockiness/banding, try adding a small amount of noise to the gradient in AE before rendering.

  • Looking for new All in One. Is Officejet as good as Photosmart? Please recommend an All in One.

I have the HP Photosmart C7180 All in One that's a few years old and is starting to give me a lot of errors (mostly ink level errors).  I'm thinking about replacing it, because I want one that doesn't use as much ink -- and one that has a bigger scanner bed (at least 11 x 14 or bigger).  I'm a budding artist and I want to have the ability to scan in my drawings.
However, I do print a few photos now and then.  Does anyone know if Officejets will print decent pictures?
Please recommend an All in One (the newer the better) for my needs.

Thanks! It sounds like a potential nightmare. Does
anyone have a different experience? I'm not
committed to an all-in-one, but it does save space.
If you're willing to take time and effort into the process, HP's MFDs and Brother's MFDs work... mostly. HP has even improved their drivers. It took 'em long enough.
No, I repeat, no MFD I've ever seen has been trouble-free, Mac or Windows. That includes Epson, Canon, HP, Brother, and (ugggh!) Lexmark devices. They all give problems. Not necessarily the same problems, but problems. HPs and Brothers give the least trouble with Epson a close third... but YMMV. I know people who swear by Canon, while in my personal experience Canon devices have been... not so good. But it was a limited sample, and maybe I had lemons.
Most MFDs (that is, everyone but Brother) don't easily do networking unless it's a Specific Feature™. My HP PSC1350, for instance, does not believe that such a thing as a network exists, and is that way if connected to Macs or Windows machines. I can make it visible over the network, but it's a pain.
If you want wireless network printing, get a wireless router (hint: Apple sells something called an AirPort Base Station) or access point which has a USB port and supports putting printers on the network. Note that you'll likely not be able to scan over the network.
There are network MFDs; HP makes some. They're expensive. The OfficeJet 74xx is $500, and it's the cheap HP network MFD. I do NOT own one, so I have no idea how well they work, other than they're HPs... which means that the hardware will probably be excellent, and the software dreck.

  • Please Recommend - AIO/MFP Printer

    Hi,
i'm looking for a AIO/MFP printer that support "scan to email" and "scan to network folder".
the above functionality should not require the printer to be directly attach to a pc via USB/LAN/WiFi.
the printer should only need to be be configured as network printer with a fixed IP, and the above requirement can be achieved.
other than that, it should also capable of fax and scan.
there are 5 users, and monthly usage is around 500 pages & above.
please recommend me relevant models in these 3 categories (if available):
    -black & white laserjet
    -color laserjet
    -inkjet
    thanks & regards,
    LauCN

Well here's what I've done and learned.
Shane - I should have listened to you (ultimately I did!).
I went out and bought an Epson Artisan 810 thinking maybe most of the problems had been solved. Long story short - printed a test page and one other page and then went dead - so two pages out-of-the-box it became a beautiful black brick. Epson was less than useful on the phone - suggested they would send a replacement in 5-7 days. I got a case number from them, and returned the printer to OfficeMax.
While there I mentioned the Lexmark '05 series - and looked at a couple choices. the salesman was very friendly, says the Lexmark rep had spent a lot of time with them. Ended up buying a Lexmark Platinum Pro905 series multifunction machine, with two paper trays. Was discounted down to $299 at OfficeMax along with some free stuff and OfficeMac bonus dollars thrown in.
Snow Leopard 10.6 drivers were available from the Lexmark website, downloaded those and used them along with the install disc that came with the unit.
So far - I'm in printer/fax/scan/copy heaven! Working great. Only glitch for me so far is the second paper drawer does not seem to be adjustable down to photo paper sizes, basically it's a letter paper sized drawer (I think?). It still will suit my purpose, my plan is to keep my checks in the second drawer so I can easily print out on check stock from Quicken, QuickBooks, etc. - so really that solves my problem.
I did play with some 4x6 photo paper in the top drawer and the quality of the photo prints were very much to my liking.
So thanks for everyone's comments, let's keep our fingers crossed.

  • Where's can i Buy any Professional Authoring DVD for IMAC, did you know about Studio DVD pro ?

I need help, i need buy or dowload some Professional Authoring DVD for IMAC, I editing in my Final Cut Pro X and need a DVD authoring
after installing the Mavericks, my IDVD don't work, can someone help about this ?
also, did you know if DVD studio pro its available for sale ? if yes, where's can I buy  ?
    thanks

Apple discontinued DVD Studio Pro three/four years ago. You can probably find copies from private sellers, but whether it will work without problems on OS X 10.9 I don't know. I don't know of any "professional" alternative to DVDSP for Mac, but someone else here may be able to offer suggestions.
As to iDVD, it should work under Mavericks, depending on what version of iDVD you're running. You might ask for assitance in the iDVD forum. For alternatives to iDVD, see this page for suggestions:

I have done that several times, and the program still doesn't work.
Can you please recommend an address.shipping label program that works with Avery labels that I can purchase, and that is also simple to use?

  • Image Brightness Changes When Authoring DVDs

    Hello,
To encode footage I export 720 24p footage from FCP as a Quicktime .mov using Microcosm then encode in Compressor using the standard Best Quality, 16:9, SD setting. The Quicktime .mov and the encoded .m2v file plays with the same image brightness and contrast as does the original footage in the FCP timeline, but once I author it in Studio Pro it consistenly looks lighter and consequently washed out when played back on the same monitor from the DVD. It also ends up looking lighter when played on a TV than programs from a typical rental DVD movie.
I set up my 23" Cine display carefully with with Apple's advanced profiling software, and images and color bars match footage displayed on my Sony PVM-14M that has been set up with color bars through a decklink card.
Can anyone offer advice about why this may be happening? So far my only fix is to arbitrarely change image brightness when encoding with Compressor. Is there some change I should be making in FCP to go from 720 24p HD footage to SD encodes?
    Thanks,
    Drew Harty
    G5 dual 1.8   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I have read on various forums that people are getting better encodes from HD footage by exporting to a Quicktime file before encoding. Several people have complained about the results exporting directly to Compressor. I take it you haven't found this to be a problem?

  • Need to author DVD from FCP X

I converted to FCP X and need to author DVDs from the footage I shot.  Since I still have DVD Studio Pro I imported the footage, authored the DVD and burned it. It won't play on my DVD player, Blu Ray player or even my Mac. In the build I get notes that say:
Note: The directory ‘/Users/melbraneff/Library/Caches/DVD Studio Pro Files/DSPPublishing’ is not a DVD-Video directory and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.
Note: The directory ‘/Users/melbraneff/Library/Caches/DVD Studio Pro Files/PAR’ is not a DVD-Video directory and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.
Note: The file ‘TB_Index_Bg_HDNTSC.mov_NTSC_10000.m2v’ found in the ‘DVD Studio Pro Files’ folder is not a DVD-Video file and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.
Note: The file ‘DVD_01_VS_EAST_BEARS.layout’ found in the ‘HVDVD_TS’ folder is not a DVD-Video file and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.
Note: The file ‘VOB_DATA.LAY’ found in the ‘HVDVD_TS’ folder is not a DVD-Video file and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.
I don't know if that is telling me what the problem is or not. Any help would be appreciated.

FYI, DVD is always SD, irrespective of whether the authoring program is DVD Studio Pro, or something else. The only HD that DVD SP ever supported was the long-obsolete HD DVD.  Nor has Apple ever integrated Blu Ray devices into their hardware.
There is a lower quality version of Blu Ray that is available in FCP and which can be burned to a normal DVD-R disk. You start with a Bllu Ray setting and select a DVD drive for the Output Device. The limitations are that it's half the bit rate and you're limited to about 30 minutes. But it is HD resolution. Give a try if you're interested.

  • Please recommend a tool for stress-testing ?

Could anyone please recommend a (free) tool to do multi-threaded stress-test, on plain java classes ?
In more detail: I'd like to do unit-test for some plain java methods (only mathematical calculations. No web interface, no swing).
The emphasis is stress test: i need to launch multiple threads, all of them repeately invoking my method. Under these conditions, I need to report correctness (has the method yielded the expected return value), and statistics on response time.
Any recommendations would be appreciated . Thanks !

Besides j2se or jdom, any fast tool for it?What do you mean with "j2se", that's not a XML handling tool (it contains several, 'though).
SAX sounds good for building object trees from XML, but there are several XML mapping libraries out there (try google).

Please recommend personal finance software for Mac that allows month to month analysis of spending by categories.  Quicken on a PC was good at this.  Mint seems very limited.

Quicken for Mac 2007 works just fine (and is said to be compatible with Mavericks).  It is often denounced for not being "modern", but when something works, and does everything I want, I need a good reason to switch.
A few years ago (2011), I got that reason when I upgraded OSX and Quicken stopped working due to the absence of Rosetta.  I switched to iBank.  I used it for more than a year.  It was cumbersome, they have no sense of a helpful user interface, but it "works".  I found ONE feature that I liked:  you can attach an image (or any file) to a register entry, so I can save receipts right with the register.
But when Intuit came out with the revised Quicken 2007 for Mountain Lion, I gladly went back.  I found that being able to update stock prices right in the portfolio view (for those not automatically found online) was handy - in iBank you have to generate a report to see the holdings, and then you have to switch to a view of "Securities" then scroll down through that list to find your stock, then "edit" then change the price, then "Save" then go back to reports and re-generate the portfolio view.  Also, if you enter a stock purchase in a Quicken register, the price you paid gets added to the price history for the stock (as of the date of the transaction).  No such help in iBank.  Most of the helpful UI features (like increasing the date with the + key) are glaringly missing in iBank.  I find I am getting no more than about 3-4 keystrokes before having to move the mouse and click.
If you are considering sharing the app on an iPad, Quicken won't work, but I found that iBank for iPad doesn't work either.  The interface is completely different from the Mac version, you can't do much with it, and if you have a stock whose price is $11.25 / share and sell 200 shares, you might find that $22.50 gets added to your cash in the account.  (I actually made a few million dollars when it decided that 200 shares at $11.25  yielded $2,250,000.)  Luckly, I received a refund for that app.
Depending on how the Mavericks switch goes, I hope to be able to stick with Quicken, but I am keeping my records up-to-date in both now, because I can live with iBank.  I will just have to keep an eye on its arithmetic.

I have a 13" mid 2011 MB Air 128gb and a Time Cap.802.11AC. My HD is maxed out because of 30GB of photo storage after migration to 10.10.3 Photos. I have reduced apps and files as much as possible so the only thing left is to move the photos.  Please recommend an external drive compatible for connecting to my TC 802.11ac and moving the iPhoto Lib off my HD which will free approx 15 gbs. of space. I don't plan on using it for any other purpose so a small capacity drive will suffice. I know the "optimization" is supposed to adjust for this condition but I don't trust that assertion.I only have 2gb free space remaining.

I don't plan on using it for any other purpose so a small capacity drive will suffice.
If you really only want such a small capacity drive.. what about just buying a 32GB or 64GB USB memory stick.
You should still have a back up to the internal hard disk of the AC TC.
Or just buy a WD Passport.. don't waste your money buying 500GB as it is only a bit more to buy 1TB and a bit more again for 2TB.. For future use if you do buy a USB hard disk buy 2.5" type.. and buy 1TB or if the budget stretches 2TB..
