Please! Saving Libraries while switching hard drives

I just got a new PC and I copied my old itunes library into my new itunes. My ratings/play lists are there and everything looks fine. The problem is that none of the files can be found. I have all the music files on my new PC, but on a different hard drive than the old itune library.
I know i can just import the music, but if i do i lose all my ratings, I've tried. How do you keep your library while switching hard drives?
Apple support over the telephone could not help me, Can anyone?

ok, nevermind.

    Coastal,
Frank gave you the exact answer to your question.
However, I would like to ask if you are indeed asking the right question.  Do you really want different libraries?  The implications are that you have to "switch" libraries to see what's in the others, and so that your searches don't work across all of your pictures?  If so, then you asked the right question.  If not, you may be more interested in relocating your masters to multiple hard drives so your library gets smaller, instead of breaking up the library.

  • I moved my iPhoto libraries from one hard drive to another and have to manually locate the photos, every time!!!

I moved my iPhoto libraries from one hard drive to another and now every time I open a library I have to manually locate the photos. After locating the first file, it works well and remembers the location of the files of all the events, even when the folders containing the actual photos are in several different locations.
The problem is that when I close and open iPhoto, it does not remember where the files were and I have to locate at least a file, all over again.
Does anyone knows if there is a way of making iPhoto "remember" or saving the location of the files?

By default, iPhoto will store its library file under ~/Pictures. To select a library manually in iPhoto:
    Ensure that iPhoto is closed.
Hold down the Option key and click on the iPhoto icon in your Dock or launch it from the Applications folder.
    Click on Choose Library.
Locate and select the library you wish to use.
Close iPhoto and re-open it. Does it remember the library that you selected?
For more information on moving your iPhoto library, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229.
Hope that helps, have a great day.

  • Time discrepancy on items saved onto network external hard drives

This is an odd problem that just turned up seemingly this morning. I have an Apple Extreme base station with two external hard drives attached via my network that are used primarily for multimedia. This morning I noticed that everything that's saved directly onto the hard drives has a serious time discrepancy - specifically, December 13, 1931 at 8:45 p.m. And all of the files saved since this morning have that same time stamp, while everything saved onto the computer's internal hard drive has a normal time stamp. Is this simply a matter of disconnecting and then reconnection the hard drives to fix the problem, or is there more that needs to be done?

Is the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) configured to use a time server?
Open AirPort Utility, select your base station, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the base station’s configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click the AirPort button, and then click Base Station.
Select the “Set time automatically” checkbox, and then choose an NTP server from the pop-up menu if you have access to one on your network or on the Internet.

  • I had all of my video files that I work on in iMovie saved to an external hard drive exclusively to save space on my Macbook.  I had just finalized a project, went to work on another one and files couldn't be found, were not deleted how do I find them?

I had all of my video files that I work on in iMovie saved to an external hard drive exclusively to save space on my Macbook.  The other day I had just finalized a project and went to work on another one and when I opened the project I could see what should have been there, but scrolling over the entire clip I would only see black and that the file was missing.  I did not drag anything on the hard drive to the trash or move anything.  How can I get those files?  These are videos of my kids and I am devastated and willing to try anything!

Control click does not work - no option to find files.  I have no idea what to do.  When I look at the usage of the external drive the space is being used, but I cannot find the files.  I am going to try MacKeeper's Undelete and see if I can make any progress with it.

The backup files for my devices are saved to my internal hard drive. I have a small internal hard drive and would like them to be saved to an external drive. How can I change where iTunes automatically backs up to?

This has nothing to do with iTunes as iTunes provides no way to move or relocate the backup files.
A search of google or the fourms would reveal ways to create a folder link to relocate the physical location where the files are stored.

Drag the Library from the Pictures folder to the Users/Shared folder. I would point out that folks doing this on 10.6 and later frequently meet permissions issues. You might do better moving it to an appropriately formatted External Disk.

  • Are photos in photo stream automatically saved to my iMac hard drive?

are photos in my photo stream automatically saved to my iMac hard drive?

Photostream is a temporary storage area for photos. There is a maximum number of photos that you can keep in your photo stream and there is a time limit as well. But on your Mac you can normally view your PhotoStream photos in iPhoto and copy them to albums on your Mac. Don't expect photos to remain in your PhotoStream permanently.

  • Project will not open when saved to an external hard-drive

    Hi,
Well, as the title says, I cannot reopen a project when saved to an external hard-drive, it will however do so when I save to a local drive... Not good if you wanna work around several workstations, any ideas as to why?
    Thanks,
    Phil.

Are you using Final Cut Pro?
You should be asking on that forum. It would be beneficial if you provided some concrete information, what computer, what drives, how are they formatted, how are they connected, what exactly happens when you try to open it?

  • I am using referenced images, saved on an external hard drive. It would be most helpful to transfer the new captions (version name) to the referenced images which still have the camera code on them. How can this be done? Thanks so much!

You're question is hard to follow. Are you looking to rename your master files to the version name? Or are you looking to do something with IPTC caption field and the masters?

  • USB-VXI re-enumeration when we switch hard drives betweens test systems.

We have a test system that uses a USB-VXI controller and has removable hard drives.  When we move the removable hard drive between systems, we get another instance of the USB-VXI controller, and the test system cannot determine which enumerated instance is the correct one.
The hard-drives each have the same volume ID.  The USB-VXI controllers each have a different identifier.  We are using WIndows XP.

An option you could use is to save the Measurement & Automation (MAX) Configuration File for each setup. You could setup the system as desired on each computer and then when you switch the harddrive you Import that proper configuration file.
Please reference the following KnowledgeBase 3FII43MP: Export and Import Files in Measurement & Automation Explorer for more information. Please remember that you will need to clear out MAX, by deleting the previous VXI system, before setting up the current VXI System. This will ensure that you are saving the desired setup.

  • Can I transfer our family itunes libraries to external hard-drive and connect to Time Capsule to share accross network

I was wondering if I could transfer our family itunes account libraries which are on 2 laptops and 1 Macbook, each with their own Apple ID's linked to iTunes per machine to an external hard-drive. This hard-drive would then be connected Time Capsule to share accross the network. Is this scenario possible? Please advise. Thank you.

There's your problem.  Macs can only read NTFS and not write to it.   there are various cross-platform solutions but none are ideal.  If this is a Mac-only drive the best thing is to reformat it to Mac Extended with Disk Utility.  Note in doing so you will erase the drive!

  • CS4 : Does Adobe Save A Secondary copy of your Saved File 2 Your Hard Drive?

Hello all! I run CS4 on my PC laptop, windows vista, 32 bit, 280 gb of hard drive and 4 gb of ram. So here's my dilemma. I've had to reformat my hard drive a couple of times because it gets to critical mass after 4 months of heavy CS4 and internet usage. I do run the latest version of Norton 360 on my system and use google chrome as my browser. I'm taking stuff off my laptop now in the way of files and I've backed up my files on a WD external drive. I also don't really run any other programs except the ones in CS4 (mainly PS, Illustrator and InDesign). I didn't even put Office on my system. So I was wondering if CS4 or any of the CS versions back up any of your saved files to some elusive place on your hard drive as a secondary option. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why my hard drive fills up so fast. I just finished my last semester of school and I realize that some of the folders I had on my desktop were in the GB, but I'm not getting why it fills up quickly. Is there something I should "set" when I'm installing CS4 so that it doesn't hog all my hard drive. I point the finger at Adobe because that's the only really big program that I know of that I run on my system. I'm almost done taking off all my important files/folders and I'm going to install CS6. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everybody and take care. :-)
