Please select boot device

When I turn my PC on, a blue screen comes up and asks me to"please select boot device". It reads" ST1000528aAS, HP CDDVDW TS-H653T, and Realtek PXE B03 D00. I'm not really sue what to do and I don't want to do anything to mess up my PC. Can anyone tell why this is doing this and to fix it? Thanks for the help.

  • Create PDF from Scanner - Scanner - Please select a device - Device not listed?

My scanning device, Brother DCP-1510 is installed and working properly. According to the device specs it has TWAIN, WIA, ICA, SANE2 drivers.
I can see and select the scanner in the native "Windows fax and scan" now it is connected to the computer. The device also works (scans OK, but without much functionality) using the default  "Control Centre4" ...
I wish to use Acrobat to scan some documents to PDF
In Acrobat the scanner is not listed in the "Please select a device"...
What should I do? Any tips to get the said scanner listed in device list?
[ btw... Acrobat has listed two other scanners in the device list for which I have installed drivers, but these devises are located in other offices (on the other side of the state unfortunately) ]

I am not sure which of the following did the trick...
I downloaded the drivers (latest software included was the only new thing, the drivers were actually the same versions)... Then I reinstalled the whole package...
I also followed the tips in Learn & Support and troubleshoot  Troubleshoot scanner issues item #4. Restart your computer with startup items disabled / and then turned on all the Adobe and Brother related ones (not the entire suite of apps and services)...
After the reboot and reconnecting the scanner it is there!  - "Create PDF from Scanner" "Custom Scan" "Input" "Scanner" "Please select a device" - both the TW and WIA devices...
What is the difference or advantages of choosing TW over WIA? maybe someone might chip in.. otherwise settled Thks!

In case anyone else finds this thread I did end up getting mine to work (after abut 48 hours of pulling my hair out). The "solution" was simple in my case, but it might have been a coincidence. I turned the wireless off on my phone for a different reason - then I when I turned it back on the device instantly appeared in spotify-desktop! I had already factory reset my phone, so I know that establishing a connection to the wireless was not the problem in the first place. Also, I was able to play music on my phone, so I know that it was hooked up to the wireless (I turned off 3g just to be sure).
But for some reason when I toggled the wireless off then on again - it worked. Go figure.

  • P67A-G43 select boot device issue with GTX 970

I recently tried to install a new GTX 970 and ran into an issue where I am asked to select the boot device every time I boot the pc. I uninstalled the driver for my video card before installing it. The system appears to be stable once it boots into Windows. However, when I swap back to the GTX 760, that was in the system previously, it boots straight into Windows without having to select the boot device? I have seen lots of issues on the forum about the 970 and older boards but nothing specific to mine. I am currently have BIOS version 1.A0 installed. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, you need to update. Following the below updates to latest official bios (5.4 aka E7673IMS.540)
    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
A.) Download >>this archive<< and place it on your desktop. Do not decompress.
B.) Download and install the Forum flash tool.
C.) Insert your FAT32 formatted usb stick.
D.) Make sure that all win 8 options are disabled. (Fast Boot etc) Also make sure the legacy USB is enabled.
E.) Start the forum flash tool and select option 1. Then point the tool at the compressed archive we downloaded earlier. Then to your USB Flash Drive.
         F.) Boot to the USB
G.) Now follow the directions and let the tool flash
H.) After flashing reinstall ME drivers in Windows: http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/intel_amt81_win78_xp.zip

  • Error Message: Reboot and Select proper Boot device.

My HP desktop computer (model p6654y) will not boot directly into Windows.
I can ALWAYS make it boot into Windows by first pressing the F10 key to enter the BIOS. If I then exit the BIOS (without even making any changes), the computer will boot into Windows.
If I don't first enter the BIOS, the computer will USUALLY take me to a black screen that says:
"Reboot and Select proper Boot device. Or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key."
At this point it won't boot any further.
Also, the last message the BIOS displays (before the error) is:
"00 USB mass storage devices found and configured".
After that, all of the lines of text on the screen move up one level and then the screen goes black and soon after I get the Proper Boot Device error.
I do not have anything plugged into USB ports except an ordinary mouse and ordinary keyboard (both of which I changed - in case they were faulty).
My BIOS is set to boot from the Hard Drive first.
    I reset my CMOS.
I do not have a CD in the CD drive.
It used to be that this would ALWAYS happen if I (1) Turned off the Computer, (2) Unplugged it for 60 seconds, (3) Plugged it back in, and (4) Turned it on.  Now (after trying various things), it only SOMETIMES happens when I do this.
    Any ideas?

    Hello @GardenGuy1,
I have read your post on how your desktop computer is having a difficult time booting into Windows, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To further diagnose this issue, I recommend testing the health of your system's hard drive by following the steps in this document on Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 7). If the hard drive is found to be in good working order, I also suggest restoring your BIOS back to factory settings. This can be done by following this document on Recovering the BIOS.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • "Reboot and select proper boot device...." e9105z desktop w/Vista

I have a pavilion elite e9105z desktop computer running Vista and I get the following message "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key."  The computer will start up, but maybe a minute or two after my desktop is up the screen freezes and then goes to black with this message.  I've looked at other forums of this topic, but I found it weird that it will start up fine, but just crash after a couple minutes.  Please help me!!  I have a ton of important stuff on my hard drive and I can't lose it!!  And yes, I should've backed it up, but unfortunately I can't go back in time

It sounds like your hdd is failing. Of course it 'could' only be corrupt Windows files. Both of these scenarios is going to require a reinstall of Windows, either on old hdd or new one.
If the first priority is saving your important files I would get a USB Adapter or USB Enclosure to plug the hdd into another machine via usb port to copy files off.If the hdd is not badly damaged this should work.
Once your files are safe you can reinstall the hdd and try a Recovery from F11 at power on or via Recovery Disks. If that process fails, replace the hdd with a new one.

  • "Reboot and select a proper boot device..." error on a p6214y

i have this problem where my computer boots and hangs at the HP blue screen mostly ... sometimes it wont and then go through to the "Reboot and select a proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key" message....
and sometimes if i leave the computer alone for weeks... it will boot into windows. and immediately go into slow response. then the process repeats from atop...
but then i connect my hard drive to another CPU, and it logs in fine ... so i know its not the HD...
i have taken out the battery, checked the cables .... is there something we dont know about this issue???

The Boot tab of the BIOS Setup shows the following typical items on the screen. (Your system might be different and not include all items):
Figure 8: Example of a Boot screen
    Boot-time Diagnostic screen
Boot Device Priority (The order for the boot process. For example, removable devices, DVD optical drive, and hard disk drive).
I would recommend turning on the computer and immediately tapping F10. When Bios pulls up use your arrow keys to move right until you highlight the BOOT tab. Press enter. Scroll down and select boot device priority by pressing enter. Make sure the HDD is listed as the first boot device. Hope this helps!

  • [Solved]Unbootable fresh intall - reboot and select proper boot device

Hello, this is not my first Arch Linux installation, but it is my first time posting to the forums. I just completed my second attempt at installing Arch on a brand-new Toshiba Satellite C55. After the installation completes and I reboot, instead of Grub I get a blank screen with this message:
Reboot and select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key
I thought maybe I made a mistake, so I started over and completed a second installation, only to get the same message. I am not sure how to proceed. I tried booting from a xubuntu live usb I had lying around, and it doesn't recognize that either, although it does recognize my Arch live usb.
    Any ideas?

UPDATE: I erased the entire disk with
    sgdisk -Z
and reinstalled again, this time creating only a boot partition and a root partition for the rest . Installed gummiboot instead of GRUB.  This time it worked, so I know that at least I did not brick my machine.
I don't know if erasing the disk did the trick (since this machine had previously had Windows 8 on it, and may have had something "leftover"), or if I had made a mistake during the partition or when mounting the partitions (I noticed an error in my fstab the third time around, so I started over ,again, and the fourth time it worked).
Just thought I would post this in case any other newbies run into the same issue.

  • Reboot gives me "Reboot and select Proper Boot Device"

    System info:
    Board: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming board
BIOS: Latest Official (Will provide when I get home)
VGA: MSI GTX 760 Twin Frozr Gaming
    CPU: Intel i5-4670K w/stock cooler (no O/C)
    MEM: 16GB Patriot Viper 1600Mhz (2x8GB)
    HDD: Samsung EVO 500GB SSD
PSU: ThermalTake Smart 760W 80 Plus Bronze (single +12V rail, 62)
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
About 50% of the time after a reboot I get an error stating something like "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device".  I should have taken a picture to get it correct but it's an error stating no OS or no boot device found so the exact wording should not matter.
At that point, if I reboot the rig 4-6 times, using the case button or the reset button, it will boot up fine.  I know right away if it is going to error again because my keyboard lights and laser mouse will not get power.  When the keys and mouse get power, it boots up fine.  I am not sure if that has anything to do with this issue but I cannot hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot when the error appears, I have to either power down or reset.
I have unplugged everything from the back of the board (no audio, no lan) and just had the keys and mouse in the USB3 ports and then tried the USB2 ports and the same thing happens occasionally.
I moved the SSD from SATA1 to SATA2 to SATA5 and SATA6 with no solution.  I swapped SATA cables from the provided ones to brand new, never used ones with the same issue.
It was really hard going through Windows update since it had to reboot about 10-12 times because half the time it would not reboot into Windows had to keep hitting the power or reset button.  I have used Live Update 5 to make sure I had all the drivers it suggests.  I also believe Fast Boot is enabled via the applet that pops up after Windows boots.  I also reset the BIOS a few times but it still happens.
One last thing, I got the board when there was a rebate and I already cut the UPC off the box so I cannot return it to Fry's.
    Any suggestions?

Try updating the firmware of the ssd.
Also try updating the bios of the mainboard from the files here: >> BIOSes<<
(I'll check for a newer beta version today)
Try replacing the SATA cable and removing and USB storage devices/
Do you have any other old HDDS etc you didn't like that at one time had an OS install on them?
Thank you for the quick reply.
I didn't state this but I have tried different SATA cables; the ones that came with the board and new ones I had.  No USB devices (except keys/mouse) are connected.
I will check out updating the SSD drive, didn't occur to me to check on that.
I will check to see if there is a different BIOS available than the one that Live Update provided.  I didn't compare, I just assumed it would be the latest official one.
This issue happens with just the SSD installed and with other HDDs installed.  I also went into the BIOS and turned off every boot option except for the Samsung SSD (set all to disabled except the one that listed the Samsung SSD).

  • Reboot and select proper Boot Device on Satellite C55-B5200

As soon as you power on your system, start rapidly & repeatedly pressing the 'F2' key to enter the UEFI-BIOS Setup. Check the HDD and see if it shows the name of your HDD, or if it shows as 'Not Present'. If it is indeed present, and you are still not seeing 'HDD Recovery' in the 'Boot Menu' when you press the 'F12' key, then you should boot off the Toshiba Recovery Media you should have created, as you would have been advised to do when you first started your system and as advised on page 58 of your User's Guide. If you never made your Recovery Media, you can order it from Toshiba here, by inputting your unit's serial number and its part number. Then follow the directions on page 60 of your User's Guide to restore your system to its factory defult setup. After you have restored it, then carefully follow the instructions in the article below: How to Update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1  Let us know what happens, or if your HDD shows as 'Not Present'. Good luck. Mike

  • Z77A-G45 reboot and select proper boot device

    Hey all,
I've had this problem happen to me twice and have yet to figure out what causes it, so I was wondering if anyone knows for certain.
I have a Z77A-G45 with Windows 8 Pro installed.  Twice I've had a problem with after rebooting, I get the message:
"reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"
This happens with no USB storage nor CD/DVD in the system.   When I try to press Delete to get into BIOS after powercycling, I just get the above message repeatedly with each keypress.   The only customization that I've found in common when this happens, is that I have the Fast Boot options enabled -- so for now I'm just avoiding that.    (I'm actually am not sure if its making any real difference.)   To resolve the problem, I have to clear my CMOS settings via the motherboard.
I don't see any signs of HDD failure - SMART is clean, no I/O errors in the System log, and performance seems fine.   So maybe it really is just Fast Boot??
EDIT: Oh, my BIOS version is  V2.9 / 20130118
    thanks

    Recommend to try the latest UEFI/BIOS found here;

  • Trouble with Boot Device

I'm having some trouble with boot devices on my Neo Plat and I hoped someone here might have a fix.
I recently installed a new hard-drive as C. I've gone into Bios/Advanced Features and set the boot order to the following:
    Hard Drive
    CD-ROM
    Floppy
When I reboot now I get the message "Booting from CD" which it can't do because there is no bootable CD-ROM present. I then get a message like "No Boot Device Present" and the system halts.
The strange thing is that if I select F11(Select Boot Device) at the BIOS test screen and select Hard Drive and then my C: Drive it boots just fine from that drive! But it will not do this automatically.
Anyone know what the problem might be?

F11 is pr. boot only .
Need to be in the bios ..
You need to go into "hd boot priority" submenu in advanced features menu and set/save the HD order there . (number three from the top)
Toggle the boot drive from pos 1. to 2. in the list and back to pos 1.
Then save the bios and exit .

  • Pavilion dv9700 not seeing optical drive as boot device

Let me start from the beginning:
    1) user brought laptop to me, wouldn't boot.
    2) I ran hp diags on harddrive, they failed
    3) I replaced harddrive with off the shelf drive
    4) ordered recovery disk (dvd) from hp
    5) on recipt, tried to boot from recovery dvd:
                 - recieved error "missing ntldr"
                - rebooted, hit F9 to select boot device, only harddrive listed
    6) tried external optical drive, same result
    7) called hp, ordered new optical drive, same result
    Is it dead jim?

I have the EXACT same problem with a DV6815...
My BIOS settings are identical to the OP's...
But when I try to select the boot device, only the HD is listed...
I have swapped out more than a half a dozen drives (drives that I know are good) with the same result.
On 2 of the drives, they worked (IE they were recognized and available when I hit the Select Boot Device screen) but after a reboot, they were gone again..
I have dissassembled the laptop, cleaned the connector real good, but nothing has helped.
I wonder if it could be a BIOS issue???
    Michale
Additional Info:  I got kinda excited because the BIOS version I had was F.30 and I noticed there was a newer version, F.32.  Unfortunately, it did not fix the disappeared CD/DVD drive problem..

  • Boot Device Not Found Please Intall an Operating system on your hard disk. Hard Disk - (3F0)

    Hello,
I tried to re-install de OS from windows 7 to windows 8.1 and when the bios update driever was installed and the laptop was restaring it appeared the folowing window and message:
Boot Device Not Found Please Intall an Operating system on your hard disk. Hard Disk - (3F0)
After that i tried a lot of different ways to get to boot device select ...but i couldn't do anything. I removed the HDD and i put it back, i've tried with holding in the same time windows +B and pressing the power button in the same time for 1..2 seconds and then i've waited for at least 1 minute..and it didn't appeared anything on the screen. I've done the hard drive check and it passed. The weirdest thing is that when i want to select a boot device to re-install again the OS, i can't see any boot device to select. I need to mention that i've formatted the HDD in another computer. I dont care about the informations from the HDD beacause i saved all the informations on another device storage.
Please help me repair this problem!!!  thanks a lot!
    Have a nice evening.!!!

Whenever you get a message stating that the boot device not found it could be because of bad sectors on the Hard Drive. Its not necessary that the Hard Drive Test should fail to determine if the Hard Drive if its faulty or not. Sometimes even if the Hard Drive Test passes the Hard Drive will still not work because of the bad sectors in it.
Best way to find out if its the Hard Drive you can try the Hard Deive on a different Notebook which would help you determine if it's faulty or not.
Could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc..
HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby
Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive
Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:
Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power Adapter
Step 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 Seconds
Step 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)
Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal
If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook
If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media)
Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files.

She took it back to the support shop and they upgraded her bios, but that did not fix the error message.
Please help!  What can she do  now.

    Hi:
Normally that means the hard drive failed.
I know it was replaced but maybe the replacement drive went out too.
There is a hard drive diagostics tool your daughter can run in the BIOS.
I suggest she run it (enter the BIOS by tapping the F10 key as soon as she sees the HP welcome screen).
Then once in the BIOS, there should be a diagnostics menu..one for memory and one for the hard drive.
She should select the hard drive diagnostics application and see what it reports.
Then go from there based on what is reported.
