I hope this is the right place for my question. About a year and a half ago, I installed Parallels on my Macbook Pro so that I could use WindowsXP. On a computer radio show I listen to, said that if the Windows/Parallels portion of a Macbook Pro gets comtaminated with a virus or worm, all that has to be done is to delete Parallels/Windows, reinstall it and that's the end of that. Now someone else on another board that I visit, is saying that it would be wise to get an AP app and spyware protection and saying that if Windows/Parallel portion picks up a virus or worm, that it could wreak havoc on my MBP, because the whole computer would be rendered useless. The answer that the Parallel User Manual's answer is flimsy. Up to this point I haven't had any problems whatsoever, with viruses or worms. Who is right?
P.S. If this is not the appropriate place for my post, I will be happy to relocate it, but please tell me where to. TIA!

Almost every virus is written for Windows, so your Mac is fine. Also, because it is installed on another partition, it acts like a separate hard drive and many viruses do not leap to other drives.
The best anti-virus protection for Windows is to disable the LAN/Wi-Fi ports in Windows XP. If you're running it in virtualization you shouldn't really need the internet because you can use Safari or Firefox in Mac OS X.

Please settle this discrepancy once and for all re: maximum ram.
My old iMac SE DV graphite was purchased and delivered in January, 2000. The original order catalog (which I kept) claimed that it was "expandable to 512mb", as were all the 400mhz G3 slot-loading DV models in various 'flavors' including my Graphite Special Edition model. Also, both / all versions had the ATIRage 128 accelerator with 8mb SDRAM.
The only differences I can discern are that my Graphite has more ram (128mb) and had a slightly bigger hard drive (13GB on the graphite vs 10GB for the 'fruit').
Note: I have since replaced the hard drive with a 20GB since the original died within the first 2 years.
On this disussion site and other places (including MacWorld articles) I've seen conflicting statements as regards the MAXIMUM RAM my graphite should/could have. Some say 1GB (2x512) and some say 512 (2x256).
Can anyone once and for all, settle this question for me so that I can make an intelligent purchase?

Thanks & Peace to all.At the time of its release Apple certified it for 512 MBs probably because larger DIMMs weren't available. In fact you can expand it to a max of 1 GB (two 512 MB DIMMs.) You will need 2 - PC100 3.3V 168-pin SDRAMs.

Someone please settle this problem once and for all! (Duplicate Tracks)
I had an iPod about two years ago and ended up getting a different mp3 player. I now have a new 5G iPod and am having the same issue I had 2 years ago for the short time I had my old iPod. Duplicate tracks showing up in my iPod's library. I searched through these forums and found a lot of people having these problems, but none of the suggestions I read in the other threads seemed to do anything.
This seems to be an underlying problem for a lot of people and I don't understand why Apple would make their players this ********. I've had several other mp3 players in the last 2 years and you put in an artists' name and all the songs appear together under one name and are simply organized by Album, genre, year, etc... but, I loaded all my songs onto the iPod and even though tracks all contain the same artist name I get multiple listings for the same artist.
For instance, if I have several albums all of their filenames contain the artists' name, followed by a dash and then the name of the song. The artist name in the iTunes tag all match exactly as well. So why in the **** do names show up multiple times? I had this problem two years ago and it was never resolved, and I checked all over the boards and just couldn't come to a solution. I'll tell you one thing though, I can't believe it's this hard to get all of one artist under one listing on the player. Kinda dumb.

The first listing gives me almost all his albums just fine. Then for the second listing I get another one of his full albums. And for the last three listings I get a single song in each of them. I mean really, Apple... How does a flaw this stupid rear it's ugly head into so many people's players?! -

You should take a look at iView Media or its Pro version. It is a cross-platform (Mac and Windows) program that is free of some of the stultifying limitations of iPhoto. For example, you can create multiple catalogs and you can easily catalog media (not just photos) that are not on the current disk, like media stored on CDs. It has very flexible cataloging features.
If they have not changed their licensing, you can buy one license to run both the Mac and PC version for one price. You can make one catalog and easily pass it between a Mac and PC with no translation or confusion. This would be much easier than trying to make it work with iPhoto and some other Windows program.
If you were to go the iView route, you would have to "sync" the data back to the photos so that they carry your keyword etc. data with them to other apps. I don't know if iPhoto embeds that info back to the photos, or if it stays in the iPhoto database only.
Photoshop Elements 4 is great on Windows, but the Mac version of Elements does not include the cataloging feature because it integrates with iPhoto. I'm not sure how smooth that all works. -

Hi all. Well first off, let me start by saying that my whole life I've owned PC's. And I'm not hacker Elliet. But I've gotten to know them pretty well. All the way from Windows 3.1 that came out a long time ago (more than 10 years ago)
So after a while of hearing about MAC's I decided to start small and get an iPod (since they are so popular here in NYC) and see what apple was about. Well I really saw that Apple had a great product and started asking about their computers. And did plenty of research. And before the new Intel Macs came out, I was going to get a powerbook. But I had a feeling a new laptop was coming out and waited a lil while and sure enough. The Macbook Pro came out. So I went out and did all my research (as to this being the first real purchase of a Apple product and knew about the possible implications of a new first gen Intel chip in a apple product litterally making history) I knew I might become a new beta tester.
So I started looking on these boards and did 2 weeks worth of hard research to see if the Mac Book Pro (MBP) was for me. And after all the problems i saw (ex: The whine, Right speaker distortion, heat coming from it, white line at bottom of screen, etc) I never saw or read anything about AOL connectivity problems. And I know, I know... alot of you are probably going to gripe and complain about AOL sucking and yada yada yada, but please. Cut me some slack. I actually like AOL. I got on it back in 92 when it came out, and really enjoyed it. And have been on it since. I like chatting on there, and so forth. And I hope you help with my problem instead of telling me to go get "a real ISP" I do have a real ISP, but I like my AOL too.
So now to my problem....
I have a Sony Viao 1.8ghz PC with 512 ram, 80 gig hard drive, 10/100 ethernet port. Connected to a Belkin Router (more info below on specs of router) connected to Opt Online Broadband Cable internet with VoIP. I use my macbook pro on the wireless network at my home.
I got a mac book pro 1.83 ghz running 512 ram on Tiger OSX 10.4.6 I thought that I would wait till a connectivity patch (which I thought would have been 10.4.6) fix the airport problems came out till I posted something. But now that I've tried everything, I'm hoping you open this thread and help me and possibly someone else out there as well. I just d/l'd and installed the 10.4.6 update last night and it did'nt help. So here's more info on my specs. I have a belkin router wireless G 2.4 ghz 54mbs router and I have configured the router with it's firewall, wap2 encryption (as it's the only selection the router has that is available that matches what airport comes with in encryption) I hid my network, and have tried to upgrade the firmware on the router.
Now Here's the real problem. I can connect to AOL on my MBP when I connect the actual ethernet cable to the MBP's Ethernet port (after I have let the cable modem do a hard reset to configure itself to a mac) I can connect to AOL. But when I disconnect the cable and return it to it's normal config, I can't connect to AOL. I can connect to the internet via safari, and firefox, and even AOL's IM on iChat. I can use Itunes all kinds of things. I can even play warcraft 3 wirelessly on battlenet. But connecting to AOL is a pain in the @$$. It's the only proggy I have that won't allow it to connect. I keep getting the error message "Your AOL connection ended because the AOL host was unable to start a new session. Please try to sign on again." Of course All i see for a while is the spinning black and white circle. And it goes through step 1 and 2, goes straight to 6. Then it goes blank, and BAM! That message pops up. And what's so frustrating is that I've tried every possible configuration on AOL, my router and even system preferences, for it to let connect. I even went into system preferences on the mac and went down the the Internet & Network "Sharing" icon and tried 100 possible combinations on that in the services tab, and firewall tab. I've turned them on, off, tried to make exceptions ETC. And no matter how much I play with the personal file sharing and windows sharing advanced settings and sigh every possible combination to make AOL connect via wirelessly. And nothing. I then even tried to fix the connection under AOL in setup. I've gone through and selected TCP Script, Airport Script. Cable Script, And practically every script I can think of. And nothing. I even went on to AOL and downloaded thier alleged fix to wireless accessing AOL. And nothing. I've been searching all over google, AOL's website, and all over these discussion boards and no mention of anyone even having the same problem. But please, someone out there with their infinit knowledge of how Macs run and having more experience than me, Please make this a good experiance for my first post on any board anywhere reguarding a mac. A MBP at that too.
An update to this, But amazingly enough, I actually got it to connect to AOL wirelessly for the first time yest. But I have no Idea how i did it. I tried for 3 hours to reproduce it and no luck. I was accessing my router at it's website config screen and somehow I clicked on connect to AOL and while it was trying to connect to it, i reset the router and BAM, it connected to AOL. And I was in shock. I thought I solved it. Somewhere while it was reseting the router it connected and stayed connected to AOL till I signed off and tried to sign back on to see if I could now connect, and guess what. The same dumb message keeps popping up "Your AOL connection ended because the AOL host was unable to start a new session. Please try to sign on again." And all I did was sign off to test it, thinking I had fixed the problem. I tried for 3 hours like I stated above, and BAM got it connected to AOL wirelessly again (somehow while the router was resetting). And thinking I fixed it, or figured out the trick to getting it to work, signed off... I kissed aol goodbye again. And have been unable to reproduce the "glitch". SIGH Can someone out there please help me?
I think I've made this message as detailed as possible, but please, can someone give me some constructive criticism on how to fix my AOL wireless connectivity problems. Do you know if it's my router? My MBP? AOL software? BTW, I got AOL software version 10.3.7 (Rev 4136.310 US) The latest version I D/L'ed from the AOL website. Anyone know If I should turn on or off some things such as personal fire sharing on, or firewall off or on? ANYTHING. Please. I've put alot of time into writing this post and making it as detailed as possible. And been having this problem for the past 3 weeks that I've had my MBP, and have waited long enough to use my AOL. If you need any further information or suggestions on making AOL work, please let me know. Thank you for taking the time to read all of this, and I really appreciate all of you in the time you take in responding back in trying to help me. I'll be monitoring this post almost hourly. FYI for the rest of you that might be having the same problem. DON'T USE A BELKIN ROUTER WITH AOL ON A MBP!!!!! It ***** wirelessly. or even hard connected, it won't connect. I went to best buy today, and got a refund on the belkin. I then went to J&R and got a D-Link router. And now it works perfect. I can now chat on AOL yet again, and I tried all the other web browsers I have and messengers, and warcraft 3 online via battlenet. And it works great. I want to give you guys a special thanks for taking time out to answer back to my post. FYI! Belkin wireless G routers do not connect you to AOL wirelessly on MBP's. No matter how much you mess around on them. I highly recommend a D-Link Router. They are easy to set up as long as you READ ( AND I MEAN IT!!!) read the instructions before you set anything up on it. Use the CD that it comes with, and you'll be good to go. Set it up and it works great Almost no dead zones in the house, and now I can use the MBP with all it's cababilities. Thanks people. I really appreciate it.
P.S. I called belkin last night when i decided to get a refund on my router for today and when i talked to the tech, after puersuading him to tell me the truth. And stop BS'ing me, he broke down and admited that AOL does not work wirelessly on MBP's. So to make a long story short this time, There you go. And one last note, I'm very happy now with my d-link router. I honestly thought it would suck. Not being a brand name router or anything. But amazingly, it works like a brand name item! Apple, please fix this bug. Sending scanned images to "Pictures" is not what I want nor what I was able to do in every previous operation system. I want to save all scanned items in a specific folder - NOT "PICTURES" Please fix this bug NOW!
I only use Image Capture, so I can't speak for other software.

Please solve this mysterious broken run arrow
Everything works great for a while. Then suddenly, this will happen. This is on a PXI chassis using a lot of LVOOP. It happened on my PC so I moved the code all to a VM. It worked fine for a while, then it just came back. These are NI's VIs. The weird thing is, if I diagram disable them, I still can't deploy. I get a broken run arrow right at the end of the deployment (when it says deploying Main), but when the broken run arrow is clicked I have the error list with no errors in it. Tried closing everything, still problem not solved.

If you have a happy vi running in LabVIEW and it has a happy arrow then it SHOULD compile to an executable. RIGHT??!! NOT... Frequently, especially if the project is LARGE, it will not properly compile!
I show you how you can compile EVEN when you have a broken arrow!
When LabVIEW fails on building an executable it sometimes does not show you WHERE the error is. It also tells you that you need files that you are not using! Go figure! This is because some of the files are ignored that should not be ignored.

This is on a Virtual Machine Windows 7 on VMWARE Fusion 6.02 and the bloody Virtual Windows 7 works better on my iMac than it does on the Toshiba Laptop that I cloned it from!
I use the LabVIEW Service Request System and it is COMPLETELY worth the cost. They are EXTRAORDINARY I would say about 98.7% of the time!

Just updated firefox. While trying to run it show error message : "The application or DLL C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\sqlite3.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette." Tried to download and install new firefox, but it alway show that the file is corrupt

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
The issue: Outlook to iPhone sync failure – Sync suddenly stopped working for calendar events but continued for contacts and notes. Finally Fixed!!!

The cause: It is now clear what caused this problem. For years I had several “all-day” events in my Outlook calendar (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.). In May 2012 I decided to make some of them one hour events so I could add alerts to remind me of the event. I did this by dragging them in Outlook to the time I wanted and expanding them to the time slot desired and then adding the alarm.
The symptom: Syncing stopped working for the calendar but continued working for contacts and notes. I didn’t realize sync was failing until months later when I missed two very important phone calls, so when I noticed it the cause was not obvious.
The failed attempts: I’m head of a software firm and my calendar sync is a crucial to my business life so I took this on with a vengeance. From a quick look at events in Outlook and the iPhone I could see that the problem started in May 2012. Events before May were in both Outlook and the iPhone but events after May were only one or the other. Unfortunately I had changed several other things at the same time relating to other events so again the cause was not obvious. MANY calls with AppleCare proved them incompetent so my internal IT guys assisted trying many things. We tried a huge number of calendar changes and several versions of iTunes, iPhone OS and Office as well as both iPhone 4 and 5, all without success.
The fix: After 18 months of frustration, MANY hundreds of $ expense and MANY hours of wasted time I saw a blog that had a calendar sync problem and it indicated all day events were related. I changed the display of the Outlook calendar to the list view, added columns so I could see “all day” event check marks as well as times of events, sorted on the “all day” event column to move them to the top, and for all events that were “all day” events AND had a start and end time, I removed recurrence and then added the annual recurrence back…
After I fixed all events that had BOTH “all day” set and had a start/end time, I tried another sync. It synced for the first time in 18 months!
Problem occurred May 2012 – fixed Nov 2013Hi, to remove dummy '_ModGrp' entries, rather than crashing the 'Suppr' key on your keyboard, you can use this basic VBA macro (launched for instance from Excel).
It will recursively remove all '_ModGrp...' folders

How to get storage on my phone again. PLEASE HELP this has been an issue for a LONG time now.
almost ALL of my iphones memory is being taken up by "other" i only have 1 GB of pictures & under 1 GB of apps. I actually had to delete all my apps just so i would still have space on my phone. I am not looking to buy more memory. My family cant really waste our money on that kind of stuff right now. I have tried restarting my phone but when i back up to icloud my phone is full of memory still. No i have no problem with getting all my pictures off my computer. But is there a way to reset my phone and ONLY keep my contacts. No other memory stays on my phone just my contacts. that way other will go away? If i need to go to the apple store i will go there. I just need to know what to do. another question i had was, now that i downloaded the icloud pannel, if i were to delete my icloud backup account, would all my information, like contacts, notes, reminders, etc, still be saved on icloud.com ? so i could just reset my phone completely. Get all my contacts off of icloud.com. & download all my pictures from my laptop onto my phone. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ANSWER. this has been a major problem for me for about a year & now its getting to the point where theres nothing left i can do. It's really stressing ALWAYS having to get online to try to find a way for my phone to not run out of storage. Please and thank you.
