Please speed up Lightroom using OpenCL/GPU acceleration and/or AVX support!

Hello,
for those, who don't look at the feature request site:
http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/please_speed_up_lightroom_using_open cl_gup_acceleration_and_or_avx_support
Hello,
I enjoy using LR. But there is still one thing that lacks: Performance, especially in the Develop Module and Zooming...
So please speed up LR using:
- OpenCL/GPU acceleration. Capture One pro 6 is doing this. If they can do this, Adobe can also!
- AVX support: Nik Software is using this. Processes got 1,5 to 2,6 times faster than before. So again... if Nik Software is capable of implementing this, Adobe should be able as well!
So, I am no expert, but from what I have read I think it is possible for Adobe.
Would appreciate to hear from other people who have more inside knowledge if this is possible for LR!
Thanks, Adobe for hearing us.
Christoph

Hello Keith,
thanks for the info!
It well might be that OpenCL causes some problems. On the other side sometimes I don't know how good a forum is to measure the problems.
Remember when a new LR Release comes out and the forum is flooded mit posts about the problems? If you just read alle the posts in the LR forum you could come to the conclusion that the new LR is completely unuseable. But in reality I never had a problem upgrading to the new LR version...
I understand your point and it might really by to early to implement this technology in LR.
But I still hope for the other direction: AVX .
I just think that we have the hardware possibilities to improve speed and LR should take advantage of this.
Kind regards,
Christoph

  • Lightroom slower when GPU acceleration is enabled

My graphics card is OpenGL compatible and it is shown in the preferences under performance.
When the GPU setting is turned on my develop module is extremely slow. Turning it off is faster and more like LR 5 performance.
All the hype about GPU acceleration and in reality is slows me down.
I've also noticed then if you have an image open and then open the preferences windows and toggle the GPU setting on and off, the image changes.
When I say changes, I mean the image becomes lighter or darker as if the exposure or whites/blacks is being changed.

I agree with Adamnz. I have a slightly older system but using CC 6 is like going back to the early releases of 5.x when the clone tool was jerking around the screen.
Painting with a brush and the mask showing makes the lag time visible.
Jerky tool movements... like trying to paint with Parkinson's.
    Screen blackouts while refreshing images.
    Slow screen refreshes between images.
CPU usage slightly higher (60%) with GPU enabled
But since this version created a "New and Improved" catalog I can't (i don't think) go back to 5.x...
BTW, I have been waiting for a call back from support for an hour when the stated call back time was 25 to 30 minutes... Not Good.
Here are my specs in case Adobe is listening....

  • Have functional difference with GPU acceleration and software processing of Mercury Playback Engine?

Used Decklink SDI and Premiere CS6 to testing.
I have a question~Have functional difference with GPU acceleration and software processing of Mercury Playback Engine?
(Can GPU acceleration export same used 59.94i external monitor export?).
IN specification,Is it need“software processing”? whether other restrictions?
If Anyone know please tell me.
    thank you.

Thank you for your help, and sorry about didn't make it clear.
Use Decklink SDI and Premiere CS6 to test.
In GPU mode of Mercury Engine, the signal form SDI is 1080i, but  even fields will be missing.
    Take a simple test:
Make quick slide for reproduce animationin in quadrangle(1080i 29.97),  but it can't paly smooth and same gone to 30P.
If in Software mode, the action can be smooth.
Although use Software mode can be ok,but if GPU does not realize,it will take long time to render.

  • Why do I no longer have Open CL GPU Acceleration, and have Mercury Playback Engine Software Only greyed out instead?

It seems I've lost all gpu acceleration options, and i am unsure why. I am on a mac pro late 2013,  AMD fire pro d700 cards. The system was working fine for many months, then last week for the first time, i got the message that says the project was last used with gpu acceleration, but the present system will support MPE Software only because open cl is not available on this system.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ask in the Premiere Pro forum.

  • I have Premiere Pro CS5. I just had to switch out my hard drive and even though nothing  else changed, Premiere is not allowing me to use the GPU acceleration mode. It's grayed out. It was working fine before I switched out the hard drive. What do I do?

The specs on my computer are correct for GPU acceleration. It has been working fine but my RAID 0 drive failed and I replaced it and now Premiere no longer recgonizes it. I am assuming I need to reset something but I can't figure it out. What do I do?

You will need to reapply the cuda hack, see Ann's answer:

  • Camera Raw 7 Speed - Can We Hope for GPU Acceleration?

Photoshop CS6 in general in my environment seems about as fast as CS5 and better in some ways, but Camera Raw 7 is slower than Camera Raw 6.6.  This is not unexpected, given that the process is more sophisticated, but my question is this:
Now that we see that Photoshop in general, with the MPE, is able to use OpenCL on capable GPUs, will we be seeing Camera Raw make use of OpenCL to achieve faster screen updates, and ultimately faster overall conversions in the near future?  In a 7.x update perhaps?
    The competition does it.

Back off?  I should heed your expert advice on avoiding confrontation, Jeff?    I have to assume by your unwavering support of Adobe on this issue that you are looking forward to having stylish artifacts like these in your own images.  I guess this will define your new style for 2012.  LOL
All the slack that's going to be cut on this has already been cut.
Hey, I could have just quietly dropped back to 7.0 and just have my own images be superior to those made by those using 7.1, but no - I chose to try to help Adobe by pointing out a problem to them here.
When I reported this problem during the beta, I was clearly ignored.  When I reported it again after the release, I was argued-with.
I don't need to be argued-with nor reasoned-with - Adobe needs to listen to people who know what they're talking about.  People not blindly praising the emperor's new clothes.
I don't need nor expect appreciation, but I had thought I might have earned enough respect around here that Adobe's first response wouldn't be "choose different settings, stupid".
An output image quality problem should be a release show-stopper. Experts like me and Vit telling Adobe that their latest color fringing reduction changes aren't working well enough should be considered seriously. Instead, it's just business as usual: Release whatever's in the pipeline.
Adobe's dropping quality standards are something I find myself wanting less and less to be associated with each passing day.
Just typing this message took me longer than it should have, because of this bogus forum software.
There's a difference between leadership and "too big to fail" thinking.
This is my last post in this thread.  Thanks for your participation.

  • Does the new gpu acceleration in illustrator not support the GTX 750ti?

We have a brand new computer with a Nvidia GTX 750ti in it but we can't get Illustrator to recognize it for GPU acceleration.

    Nvidia GTX 750ti is supported.
Illustrator currently support single GPU card with upto 2 displays connected. Could you please check if you are using more than two displays or more than one GPU driver/card?

  • Issues with Mercury Engine GPU acceleration and stills

Hi folks, recently made the switch to CS6 Creative Cloud and for the most part I am loving Premiere Pro CS6 except I am having one major issue. I've got a early 2011 Macbook Pro with the 1GB AMD Radeon HD 6750M video card and 16GB of RAM and I am using Lion 10.7.4. Mercury Engine GPU mode works great on this machine (fast timeline renders, accelerated effects, quick exports) except whenever I try to use a still image on the timeline. It doesn't matter if it's a JPG, TIFF, PSD, or anything else. It also doens't matter what the size of the image is either. As soon as I drop a still on the timeline the responsiveness of the entire program starts to grind to a halt. Parts of the timeline that were playing back soomthly (in GPU or software mode) now can barely play at 10-15 fps.
I don't have this issue in Software Mercury Playback mode (I just loose all the benefits of the GPU acceleration).
If I switch back to Software Mode, delete the previews and restart Premiere things go back to working well in software mode.
I'm working on projects with Canon DSLR footage (1080P 30fps) and I am working off of a fast RAID 0 hard drive set-up.
If anyone has any advice on how I can actually use the amazing GPU mode I would be most grateful.
    thanks
    Daniel

  • GPU Acceleration and Flash 10.1

    Hello,
I have just recently upgraded to Flash 10.1 release 10.1.53.64. The main problem I am experiencing at the moment is extremely high CPU usage while playing 720p videos with flash. It seems that Flash is not utilizing my GPU as, when the same video is played through WMP plugin for Firefox, CPU utilization is only 50%-60% instead of the 87%+. Nvidia claims that my graphics card should be supported by Flash yet I am experiencing framerates of only 9-10.
    My System Specifications:
Windows XP SP3 Professional Edition 32bit
    Firefox 3.6 & Chrome 32 bit
    Pentium 4 2.93Ghz
    2Gb DDR memory
Nvidia 8400gs (Latest Drivers installed)  <- The Graphics Card uses PCI interface.
    A picture displaying my problem:
    http://imgur.com/FkFvy.png
If someone could please assist me with the issue I would greatly appreciate it.

I have the same problem here with windows xp, 8400gs, flash player 10.1, and the driver was installed sometime last month after the release of 10.1 player, which I think should be good enough.
Hope to get some hints here.

  • CS4 GPU Acceleration and Intel X3100

    Hello everyone,
I currently own a laptop which I use heavily for image editing. It is powered by a very fast Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz and a power-efficient yet perfectly capable Intel X3100 integrated graphics chip.
My chip supports all of the necessary Shader versions, OpenGL 2.0, etc. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_X3100 ). However, when I visit the Preferences menu to enable the OpenGL acceleration, I am presented with a grayed-out option telling me I may need to upgrade my drivers or graphics card.
I have tried new driver versions. Certainly I should not have to purchase another card (impossible in a laptop in fact) seeing as my chip supports all of the requisite features.
    Help? Thanks!
    Steve

    Hi Anne,
Let me clarify. I am not aware of any current compatibility issues with Flash (author or player).
The current Intel graphics drivers do not have the OpenGL features that Photoshop looks for to enable OpenGL acceleration. Intel is in the process of developing and testing an updated driver that will support this, hopefully to be released in early 2009.
    However,
b Photoshop CS4 does currently run reliably
on systems with Intel graphics - it's just that the new OpenGL-accelerated features in CS4 are not available.
I have used an Intel GM45 system with a pre-production driver to test the new Photoshop CS4 OpenGL features like smooth-zoom, birds-eye view, and canvas rotate, and they perform smoothly. The OpenGL performance is noticably slower on older GM965 systems, but it is still almost-smooth and better than not having OpenGL enabled at all. (Note that OpenGL 2.0 will
    i not
be supported on GM945 and earlier chipsets.)
It seems you are aware that the choice of a new notebook system does not only depend on the graphics chip's capabilities, but rather how the performance of the whole system suits your needs. For example, I use Premiere Pro to edit HDV and AVCHD video, and this depends much more on the performance of the CPU than on the graphics, so I would want a system with the best CPU, perhaps even at the cost of some graphics performance.
From what I have seen of Photoshop's new OpenGL features, the GM45 chipset is quite capable of giving most users a nice, smooth experience, and even the GM965 is "ok", with just a little jerkiness. An exception may be users that bring fancy, large 3D models into Photoshop - this should work, but I don't have that type of file to test the performance (anybody want to share some?).
To summarize, the Intel graphics systems will work with Photoshop CS4 now, just without OpenGL features. If these OpenGL features are important to you, and you can wait until Feb-March for the new driver (sorry, still no firm promise on the exact date), then I would still recommend an Intel integrated graphics system with a GM965, GM35, or GM45 chipset (GM45 having the best performance).

  • PPRO 7.2.2 UPDATE: Missing GPU acceleration and project must be converted?

I just installed PPRO 7.2.2, and getting two errors when opening my project to continue to work on it:
The graphics card is a NVIDIA GTX660, which worked fine until the update of 7.2.2.
The second error I get is:
I was working in this project, and in between installed the last CC update, which I do about every 3 months. I especially do not update more often, because many times after major updates I get unpleasant surprises with malfunctioning programs, drivers, wacom tablets, operating systems etcetera. So now this came up. And I think I will even go back to updating only once every 6 months or maybe even once a year, because there always seems to be some issue after a major upgrade of the CC apps. By the way I love the Adobe CC apps, just not want to loose time after each update repairing my computers!
So anyone has some advice what to do here, or maybe I will just roll back to my previous windows backup and uninstall this latest CC upgrade I think?
    Thank you, Sebastiaan FP

    Ann,
Yes I read and thank you for responding again. Sorry for my strong words. I really love Adobe CC, its beautiful and great, but since I am new in this field there is an ocean of things to learn, and sometimes get carried away in my emotional reactions with hardware errors like these. So I just rolled back in windows to the previous backup before the upgrade to 8.0.0 and everything is rolling again. After half a year or so I will try to upgrade again. The 7.2.2 CC version is already magic enough for me now and more than I can swallow!

  • Does Premiere CC 2014 use OpenCL acceleration in H.264 encoding or just for rendering?

It doesn't seem to matter what renderer I select, transcoding to H.264 isn't any faster with OpenCL. MainConcept has an H.264 codec that uses OpenCL hardware acceleration - does Premiere CC 2014 for Windows use that codec or not? Does any hardware acceleration apply to transcoding?

Transcoding is entirely CPU-bound.  It's not something that can easily be parallelized, so there's no win in trying to send it to the GPU.  The GPU can be used in exporting if you've added accelerated effects, or if you scale the video to a different resolution.  Things that can be parallized fairly easily.  Changing from one video format to another isn't one of those things, unfortunately.

  • Black Screen (source and preview) when using GPU acceleration (CUDA) [NVidia GTX 780M]

    Hi guys!
I am running Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 on Windows 7 (Ult) on a machine equipped with NVidia GTX 780M (4 GB VRAM) graphics card. The source and the preview monitors are both black if I select GPU accelerated rendering. There is a yellow bar above the timeline clips, I can hear the sound tracks, but there is no image. If I choose the Software Only rendering (CPU) then I do see the image as well, but the real-time playback and rendering times are awful!
At first, the application would not allow me to use the GPU acceleration using NVidia’s CUDA processing. Once I entered my video card name in the “cuda_supported_cards.txt” file in the Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 folder I was able to choose between Mercury Playback Engine Software Only and Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration CUDA.
I tried downgrading the video card driver to the previous stable version and reinstall Pr – no go. How do I make Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 work with my NVidia GTX 780M video card?
    Your insight is appreciated!
P.S. I used to work on a different machine equipped with NVidia GTX 670M card (which is also missing from the officially supported Pr CS6 cards list) and I never had any issues of this nature with that laptop.

    Hi there,
As stated before, I had the same problem. Apparantly the solution for me was to check the Nvidia settings. My setup has both an onboard GPU and a Nvidia GPU (on purpose specifically for video editing and gaming). Normally the system should switch to Nvidia automatically. However, the Nvidia settings for Premiere where set to favor the onboard GPU. After changing this. everything works fine again!
    kind regards. Bart

  • GPU Acceleration Explanation?

I am trying to come up with a convenient explanation of GPU acceleration and video editing.
I would like to put out some statements and get comments on them.
The major push for the development of graphic cards is to improve the performance of gaming PCs.
The graphics processing for a video game takes a 3D representation of a simulated world and and renders it into a 2D viewing screen for interactive game play.
The graphics processing for Pr takes compressed HD video data and renders it to smooth reviewable on-screen video for interactive editing.
When the editing is complete the, video processor reads the accumulated edited instructions and HD raw files to produce highly compressed HD video (media) files for DVD production and files to be uploaded for online viewing.
Powerful graphic cards (GPUs) have been developed for the gaming industry.
Video editing application developers are utilizing the computing power of the new GPUs to speed up video editing and media file production.
Without GPU assistance the CPU must do most of the video processing.
When the CPU usage reaches 100% the smooth review becomes choppy and irritating
Choppy review reduces the throughput of the editing session.
With GPU acceleration the GPU does most of the video processing and this allows the CPU to process video faster.
GPU acceleration also speeds up the production of media files.

No, I think it's just an overgeneralization (if the term oversimplification bothers you).
I know enough about GPU programming to be dangerous but I can't hope to "explain" how it all works.  Consider that display driver releases easily exceed 100 megabytes in size (!!) to get a hint of how complex this realm is.
Take this as an example:  In a CPU resident application you might create a Frame Buffer Object, then render some pixels into it using OpenGL commands and data from other buffers you have prepared, do some manipulations using shader programs written to run on the GPU, then you might combine the data from that frame buffer with other data using the CPU.  You might then submit that frame buffer to an OpenCL program for processing.  Complex graphics programs such as video games or applications written by Adobe do this and MUCH more all the time.
As a programmer you might not even know nor care where your data is at a given moment.  The computer hardware, under control of the display driver, busily and dutifully transfers blocks of data back and forth at eyeblink speed from CPU to GPU to CPU to GPU as it is needed.
The CPU is good at doing things linearly - like making decisions and controlling the flow of the logic - and the GPU is good at doing repetitive things hugely in parallel - such as an operation on each pixel of an entire image.  The best modern programs get both working simultaneously on the parts they do best.
And note that we're not even beginning to talk yet about multiple CPUs (multiple cores), or multiple GPUs.
When you think about it, it's kind of a wonder something this utterly complex could ever be made to work.
